Fishermen, locals rally to save Vaishaw stream from illegal mining

Kulgam, Jan 2: Fishermen and residents living along the Vaishaw stream in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district came out carrying placards around the waterway to voice concern over what they described as unscientific and illegal mining that is degrading one of the region’s most vital rivers.

Placards reading ‘save Vaishaw Nallah,’ ‘save water bodies, ’ ‘stop illegal mining’, and ‘save fishermen’, were displayed as locals demanded an immediate halt to the use of heavy machinery for extracting sand and boulders from the stream.

“This river is a lifeline for Kashmir,” said a local environmental activist, Yasir Ahmad. “We are not opposed to legal mining, but unscientific extraction in violation of National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders and Jammu and Kashmir mineral rules must stop.”

The Vaishaw stream, a major tributary of the Jhelum, originates from the Kausarnag-Aharbal area and joins the river at Sangam.

It carries the highest discharge among Jhelum’s tributaries and supplies nearly six million gallons of drinking water daily to more than 100 villages in south Kashmir.

The stream also supports agriculture, horticulture, and fisheries across Kulgam and parts of the Anantnag district.

Residents alleged that heavy machinery, including JCB excavators, LMTs, and cranes, is being used indiscriminately, often during the night and wee hours, to extract riverbed material.

“There is no objection to limited manual extraction at designated sites,” Ahmad said. “But deep mechanised mining has lowered groundwater levels and polluted the water.”

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in August 2024 took cognisance of a December 16, 2024, Greater Kashmir report, ‘Vaishaw stream gasps for breath amid mining, pollution.’

The report documented how unchecked mining, agricultural runoff, and waste discharge were rapidly degrading the stream.

The matter is pending before the tribunal.

The report warned that continued deterioration could threaten trout and other sensitive fish species, compromise drinking water supplies, and increase flood risks in downstream villages.

Licensed fishermen said their livelihoods have been severely affected.

“We depend entirely on trout fishing,” said fisherman Sajad Ahmad of Pahloo village. “Polluted water and damaged aquatic life have reduced our catch.”

Residents also raised concerns about garbage dumping along the streambanks.

“There isn’t a proper dumping yard or waste segregation system,” said Bashir Ahmad, a local. “People are forced to dump waste near the stream, worsening pollution.”

Locals warned that excessive mining had weakened river embankments, increasing the risk of flash floods.

“Deep mining makes embankments fragile,” said Sayar Ahmad. “Entire villages could be washed away, like what happened during the 2014 floods.”

Environmental experts cited in earlier reports cautioned that mining during the trout breeding season, combined with pesticide-laden runoff and illegal extraction, has sharply reduced fish populations, degraded water quality, and heightened long-term ecological and disaster risks.

Residents urged the authorities to strictly enforce environmental regulations and protect the Vaishaw stream before the damage becomes irreversible.

Action over sportsman’s gesture unjustified: AIP

Srinagar, Jan 2: Senior Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) leader and MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed on Friday termed the summoning of Kashmiri cricketer Furqan Bhat for wearing a Palestinian flag symbol during a cricket match as “unwarranted and discriminatory.”

In a statement, Sheikh Khursheed said expressing solidarity with Palestine cannot be criminalised, particularly when India officially supports the Palestinian cause and has consistently stood with Palestine at international forums.

He pointed out the double standards in public discourse, recalling that senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi had carried a bag bearing a Palestine symbol inside Parliament, yet no action was taken. He further noted that even BJP leaders and Union ministers have publicly acknowledged meetings with Hamas leaders in the past. “If such expressions and engagements are acceptable for political leaders, targeting a sportsperson exposes selective outrage,” he said.

Key Parameters You Should Check

0
Key Parameters You Should Check

Selecting the right car cover is a big decision and takes a lot of consideration. Thanks to car insurance online websites, comparing the policies is easier now. In just minutes, you can compare coverage, premiums and features without even visiting physical offices. But many people make snap judgments and miss important details.

This often results in inadequate coverage, claim problems or high costs down the road. A bit of rigorous comparison would prevent these troubles. It keeps your car, financial situation and legal obligations protected. This blog describes the main parameters that you need to look at when comparing car insurance policies online.

Coverage Type and Legal Protection

The first thing to inspect is the sort of cover provided. Every car owner must meet legal requirements. Some plans offer only damage protection for others. That is third party car insurance. It safeguards you from both legal and financial repercussions related to injury, death, or property damage involving a third party. But it does not include damage that happens to your own car.

Comprehensive policies provide more extensive protection for your car, as well as for others. It’s important to compare carefully what each plan covers. Look at accident cover, theft protection and natural disaster coverage. Select a plan that suits your risk, location and usage preferences.
Premium Cost and Value for Money

The price is important, but shouldn’t be the only consideration. A lower premium may mean smaller coverage or higher deductibles. Compare the price against the features offered in detail. Examine carefully what you get for what you pay.

Some policies look cheap but do not offer key protections. Others are a bit pricier, yet provide broader and more sound coverage. Focus on getting long-term value over short-term savings. A reasonable premium provides financial protection without unnecessary extras. Always review the premium breakup before making a decision.

Add-Ons and Extra Protection

Add-ons enhance the basic policy and offer extra safety. These optional covers can be helpful in specific situations. Common add-ons include zero depreciation, roadside assistance, and engine protection. Check which add-ons are available with each insurer and how much they cost. Do not buy every add-on blindly.

Select only those that suit your driving conditions and car age. Compare add-on prices across insurers carefully. This helps you avoid paying more for the same benefit. Smart add-on selection improves overall protection without inflating the premium unnecessarily.

Claim Settlement and Service Experience

A policy is only useful when claims are handled smoothly. Check the insurer’s claim settlement approach and service quality. The cashless claim process is especially important. It allows repairs at network garages without upfront payment. This reduces financial stress during emergencies.

Check the number of network garages available near your location. You should also review customer feedback on claim speed and transparency. For example, insurers like HDFC ERGO are known for wide garage networks and structured claim handling. Efficient service plays a major role during stressful situations.

Policy Inclusions and Exclusions

Always read what the policy covers and what it does not. This section defines the real value of your plan. Look for precise details on policy benefits such as accident cover, personal injury protection, towing support, and legal liability cover.

At the same time, check exclusions carefully. Certain damages may not be covered under specific conditions. Wear and tear or negligence may be excluded. Understanding both sides avoids confusion during claims. A transparent policy helps you know exactly where you stand.

Renewal Ease and Long-Term Convenience

Insurance is not a one-time task. You must renew it every year without delay. You need to renew it annually without delay. See how easy the process of renewal is. Car insurance renewal online options help in saving time and paperwork. A seamless renewal process can prevent policy lapses and penalties.

Compare the reminders, loyalty discounts and renewal incentives of insurers. If done on time, some insurers offer renewals without inspection. This adds convenience. Opting for a policy with automatic renewal guarantees you are covered, year on year.

Insurer Reputation and Customer Support

The reputation of the insurer is as important as the policy. Look at the length of time that the company has been in business. Consider the ratings, reviews and complaint records from previous customers. Responsive customer service can help you with claims or if you have a crisis.

Seek easy contact via helplines, chat support and email support. A good Insurer provides certainty and support throughout the duration of the policy. That builds trust over the long term.

Wrapping Up

Once you know what to look out for, it becomes easy to compare car insurance online. Look at coverage type, premium amount, add-ons available, claims support and renewal ease. Avoid rushing your decision. Read the details about policies carefully, and compare patiently. A well-selected policy can shield both your car and your wallet. It even eliminates frustration at the scene during accidents or breakdowns. Smart comparison today provides long-term security and peace of mind every time you drive.

Use of wearable health tech use can increase 42-fold by 2050 globally: Study

Use of wearable health tech use can increase 42-fold by 2050 globally: Study

New Delhi, Jan 02: The consumption of wearable healthcare technology, including blood pressure monitors and ultrasound patches, can increase 42-fold worldwide by 2050, approaching two billion units yearly and emitting 3.4 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, according to an analysis.

China is projected to generate the most yearly greenhouse gas emissions from wearable healthcare electronics in 2050, followed by India. The analysis is published in the journal Nature.

The environmental footprint is estimated alongside ecotoxicity and e-waste issues posed by the devices. A kilogram of carbon dioxide equivalent is a unit measuring the climate impact of greenhouse gases emitted by comparing their potential for warming to that of carbon dioxide.

Researchers from the US’ Cornell and Chicago universities estimated that a wearable healthcare device could be emitting up to six kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent during its entire lifetime, from raw material extraction through manufacturing to disposal.

The researchers also showed that the use of recyclable or biodegradable plastics offers only marginal benefits, whereas substituting critical-metal conductors and optimising circuit architectures can significantly reduce impacts without compromising performance.

The team’s engineering-based framework of assessing a device’s footprint during its lifecycle “holds promise for establishing (an) ecologically responsible innovation in next-generation wearable electronics.”

The researchers conducted a ‘life cycle assessment’ of four devices they said represented wearable electronics in digital healthcare — a non-invasive continuous glucose monitor, a continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor, a blood pressure monitor (BPM) and a point-of-care ultrasound patch.

The devices were selected for the analysis based on clinical relevance, diversity of sensing modalities and coverage across the technology readiness spectrum.

“(A) cradle-to-grave analysis of representative wearable healthcare electronics (glucose, cardiac and blood pressure monitors and diagnostic imagers) generates full-spectrum environmental impact metrics, identifying warming impacts of 1.1-6.1 (kilograms carbon dioxide)-equivalent per device,” the authors wrote.

“The global device consumption is projected to increase 42-fold by 2050, approaching two billion units annually and generating 3.4 (metric tonnes of carbon dioxide) – equivalent emissions alongside ecotoxicity and e-waste issues,” they said.

By 2050, non-invasive continuous glucose monitors could surpass current global smartphone sales, estimated at 1.2 billion units in 2024, the team said.

They added that the market share is initially dominated by continuous ECG and blood pressure monitors, but by 2050, continuous glucose monitors dominate (72 per cent), followed by continuous ECG (19 per cent) and blood pressure monitors (eight per cent).
