Zohran Mamdani promises to govern ‘expansively and audaciously’ in inaugural speech as NYC mayor

New York, Jan 02: Zohran Mamdani became mayor of New York City on Thursday, taking over one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics with a promise to transform government on behalf of the city’s striving, struggling working class.

Mamdani, a Democrat, was sworn in at a decommissioned subway station below City Hall just after midnight, placing his hand on a Quran as he took his oath as the city’s first Muslim mayor.

After working part of the night in his new office, Mamdani then returned to City Hall in a taxi cab around midday Thursday for a grander public inauguration where U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, one of the mayor’s political heroes, administered the oath for a second time.

“Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed, but never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try,” Mamdani told a cheering crowd.

“To those who insist that the era of big government is over, hear me when I say this: No longer will City Hall hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers’ lives,” he said.

Throngs turned out in the frigid cold for an inauguration viewing party just south of City Hall on a stretch of Broadway known as the “Canyon of Heroes,” famous for its ticker-tape parades.

Taxing the rich

Throughout the ceremony, speakers hit on the theme that carried Mamdani to victory in the election: Devotion to using government power to lift up the millions of people who struggle with the city’s high cost of living.

Sanders insisted that doing so — partly by raising taxes on the rich — wouldn’t be radical.

“In the richest country in the history of the world, making sure that people can live in affordable housing is not radical,” he told the crowd. “It is the right and decent thing to do.”

In opening remarks, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Mamdani would be a mayor dedicated to the working class.

“It is the people of New York who have chosen historic, ambitious leadership in response to untenable and unprecedented times. New York, we have chosen courage over fear. We have chosen prosperity for the many over spoils for the few,” she said.

Mamdani was accompanied on the stage by his wife, Rama Duwaji. The previous mayor, Eric Adams, was in attendance, sitting near another former mayor, Bill de Blasio.

Actor Mandy Patinkin, who recently hosted Mamdani to celebrate Hannukah, sang “Over the Rainbow” with children from an elementary school chorus. The invocation was given by Imam Khalid Latif, the director of the Islamic Center of New York City. Poet Cornelius Eady read an original poem called “Proof.”

In addition to being the city’s first Muslim mayor, Mamdani is also its first of South Asian descent and the first to be born in Africa. At 34, Mamdani is also the city’s youngest mayor in generations.

Free childcare and bus rides

In a campaign that helped make “affordability” a buzzword across the political spectrum, the democratic socialist promised to bring transformative change with policies intended to lower the cost of living in one of the world’s most expensive cities. His platform included free child care, free buses, a rent freeze for about 1 million households, and a pilot of city-run grocery stores.

But he will also have to face other responsibilities: handling trash and snow and rats, while getting blamed for subway delays and potholes.

Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, an academic and author. His family moved to New York City when he was 7, with Mamdani growing up in a post-9/11 city where Muslims didn’t always feel welcome. He became an American citizen in 2018.

He worked on political campaigns for Democratic candidates in the city before he sought public office himself, winning a state Assembly seat in 2020 to represent a section of Queens.

Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, are departing their one-bedroom, rent stabilized apartment in the outer-borough to take up residence in the stately mayoral residence in Manhattan.

Mamdani inherits a city on the upswing, after years of slow recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Violent crime has dropped to pre-pandemic lows. Tourists are back. Unemployment, which soared during the pandemic years, is also back to pre-COVID levels.

Yet deep concerns remain about high prices and rising rents in the city.

He’ll also have to deal with Republican President Donald Trump.

During the mayoral race, Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from the city if Mamdani won and mused about sending National Guard troops to the city.

But Trump surprised supporters and foes alike by inviting the Democrat to the White House for what ended up being a cordial meeting in November.

“I want him to do a great job and will help him do a great job,” Trump said.

The progressives take on Trump

Still, tensions between the two leaders are almost certain to resurface, given their deep policy disagreements, particularly over immigration.

Several speakers at Thursday’s inauguration criticized the Trump administration’s move to deport more immigrants and expressed hope that Mamdani’s City Hall would be an ally to those the president has targeted.

Mamdani also faces skepticism and opposition from some members of the city’s Jewish community over his criticisms of Israel’s government.

The new mayor and his team have spent the weeks since his election victory preparing for the transition, surrounding Mamdani with seasoned hands who have worked inside or alongside city government.

That included persuading the city’s police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, to remain in her position — a move that helped calm fears in the business community that the administration might be planning radical changes in policing strategy. AP HIG

Sgr-Leh NH, Mughal Road closed; Srinagar-Jammu NH open

Ramban, Jan 1: The Srinagar-Leh National Highway and Mughal Road remained closed while the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway stayed open on Thursday.

The Srinagar-Leh National Highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir remained closed for the third day due to the accumulation of heavy snow following the recent spell of snowfall.

The highway was closed for traffic on Monday after Zojila Pass and the higher reaches of Kashmir received heavy snowfall.

Zojila Pass saw an accumulation of over 1 foot of snow.

An official said that the road had been closed, keeping in view the accumulation of snow and slippery conditions.

He said that the snow clearance work would be carried out by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) after improvement in weather.

The official said that after assessing the road conditions, the traffic movement would be restored.

The Mughal Road, the key link connecting the Rajouri and Poonch districts of the Pir Panjal region with Kashmir, was closed for vehicular movement following fresh snowfall on Wednesday night.

Officials said heavy snow accumulation at various stretches of the road led to its blockage, rendering the route unsafe for traffic.

The closure has affected the movement of vehicles between the Pir Panjal region and Kashmir.

The Traffic Police have advised commuters to avoid travelling towards the Mughal Road until it is officially reopened and urged people to cooperate with authorities and adhere to safety advisories.

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way traffic on Thursday.

Traffic authorities said that, subject to favourable weather and road conditions, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply from both sides of the highway on Friday.

Authorities said that LMVs and heavy vehicles were permitted to move in both directions throughout Thursday.

However, traffic movement remained slow at several stretches due to a single-lane section and vehicle breakdowns.

Congestion was reported at Balinalla, Dewal, Nashri-Dalwas, and along the Marog-Kishtwari Pather stretch.

The situation worsened temporarily following the breakdown of two heavy vehicles, resulting in delays.

Authorities have advised commuters to check the latest traffic updates from Traffic Control Units (TCUs) in Srinagar, Ramban, and Jammu, and to follow official updates shared on the social media platforms of the J&K Traffic Police before embarking on their journey.

Passengers were urged to prefer daytime travel and avoid night journeys, especially on vulnerable stretches of the highway.

Officials cautioned that heavy vehicle movement between the Nashri and Navyug tunnels during night hours could cause inconvenience and further delays.

Drivers were also advised to maintain proper lane discipline, with warnings that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could lead to traffic jams and pose serious safety risks.

Meanwhile, the Kishtwar-Sinthantop-Anantnag National Highway was closed due to the accumulation of snow.

Authorities said that restoration work would commence once weather conditions improve.

Cats outbite dogs in Kashmir

Cats outbite dogs in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 1: The data regarding animal bites in Kashmir is set to shatter long-held perceptions about animal-related threats in Kashmir.

In 2025, cat bites outnumbered dog bites in Kashmir, a place where the dog population is among the highest in the country. Kashmir’s newfound love for fuzzy pets at home poses a health threat in the absence of guidelines, monitoring, and illegal practices.

A total of 17,033 animal bite cases were reported from January 1 to December 26 in Kashmir.

For the first time, the data from the Anti-Rabies Clinic, Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, shows that cats accounted for the majority of incidents – 9019 bite cases.

This is significantly higher than the number of dog bite cases recorded during the same period, 7396 in Kashmir.

The figures, compiled from Anti-Rabies Clinics and district health records in the Kashmir division, vividly depict how “cat-loving Kashmir” is changing the face of the animal threat scenario here.

There is no estimate of the number of pet cats in Kashmir, while J&K lacks a mandatory pet registration system.

This has also led to illegal breeding and trade practices of cats, especially the non-local varieties, and has contributed to animal abuse cases.

Srinagar district has come up as the epicenter of animal bites and borne the brunt.

In 2025, there were 13,951 animal bite cases.

These include 8347 cat bites, 5476 dog bites, and 128 others.

Srinagar has also seen the mushrooming of pet shops and pet clinics, mostly unauthorised and unmonitored, putting a question mark over the animal welfare and human safety practices together.

Other districts have also started to see a number of cases – Budgam with 823 cases, Baramulla with 503, Kupwara 201, Bandipora 316, Ganderbal 346, Pulwama 196, Shopian 91, Kulgam 84, and Anantnag 74.

In addition, 494 cases are undivided into districts.

At the Anti-Rabies Clinic, SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, cat bites rose from 1178 in 2022 to 4200 in 2024 and over 6500 in 2025, a shocking 452 percent increase over three years.

The surge is attributed to the growing culture of cats as pets.

This is combined with an enormous stray dog population in Kashmir, estimated to be far larger than canines in many parts of the country.

Dog bite cases have historically dominated headlines in J&K, with over 2,12,968 reported from 2022 to October 2025.

Kashmir division had about 114,498 of those dog bites over the three-year period, outpacing Jammu’s 98,470.

Health experts note that cat bites are often from seemingly docile animals and are consuming a larger share of ARV.

The pet culture is also straining resources amid rising demand.

In terms of severity, Category I (minor, no skin break) 859 cases; Category II (nibbling or minor scratches) 6053 cases; and Category III (transdermal bites or licks on broken skin) 9321 cases were reported.

Action Against Drug Trafficking

Under the anti-drug drive, 25 cases under the NDPS Act were registered and 32 accused arrested. Police recovered poppy straw, charas, heroin and codeine syrup. Four drug peddlers were detained under the PIT-NDPS, and drug-related property worth 13.64 lakh was attached. Awareness programmes were conducted in 143 panchayats and 107 schools.

Bovine Smuggling and Other Crimes

Police registered 249 cases of bovine smuggling, seized 234 vehicles, rescued 2,817 animals and arrested 265 persons. Action was also initiated for the suspension of driving licences and vehicle registrations of repeat offenders. During the year, 15 cases under the POCSO Act were registered, while several burglary and theft cases were solved with the recovery of stolen property.

Cyber Policing and Road Safety

The Cyber Police Cell recovered 115 mobile phones worth around 20 lakh, which were returned to their rightful owners. An amount of 35.77 lakh was also recovered in online fraud complaints. On the road safety front, the district recorded a 10 per cent decline in road accidents compared to 2024, attributed to strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act and sustained awareness drives.

Disaster Response

During cloudburst incidents in April and August 2025, Ramban Police actively assisted in rescue and evacuation operations, regulated traffic on NH-44, helped stranded commuters and coordinated with the civil administration and SDRF to ensure smooth movement despite adverse weather conditions.

Community Outreach and Youth Engagement

Highlighting community initiatives, SSP Gupta said that 139 drug-awareness programmes, 128 Operation Pathshala sessions, a Bharat Darshan tour for 93 students, and various sports and community programmes under the Civic Action Programme (CAP) were organised. Relief cases under SRO-43 for the four next of kin were also processed, further strengthening police–public trust.

Priorities for 2026

Concluding the press conference, SSP Arun Gupta outlined key priorities for 2026, including maintaining a terror-free district through preventive policing and community partnership, strengthening action against habitual offenders, intensifying the crackdown on drug trafficking and crimes against women and children, expanding cybercrime and road safety awareness, and enhancing youth engagement and public outreach initiatives.

Additional SP Mujeeb Ur Rehman, DSP Headquarters Ramban, Waqar Bhat, DSP Operations Ramban, Manisha, DySP DAR Kuldeep, SDPOs Banihal and Gool, and other senior officers were also present at the press conference.
