JKSA writes to NHRC seeking probe, FIRs into nationwide harassment of Kashmiri shawl sellers

Srinagar, Jan 01: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Thursday has written to National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking urgent intervention into the alarming and systematic harassment, intimidation, and violence faced by Kashmiri shawl sellers and students across India, particularly in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Maharashtra.

In its letter to the NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian, the association highlighted that over the past ten days alone, more than a dozen incidents targeting Kashmiri traders and students have been reported, reflecting a dangerous and persistent pattern rather than isolated occurrences. Shawl sellers, many of whom have been conducting their trade peacefully for 20 to 30 years, have been threatened, physically assaulted, coerced to chant slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” and even threatened with death.

National Convenor of JKSA Nasir Khuehami said the organization has documented cases from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana; as well as Mumbai and Delhi. He further added that Kashmiri students have also faced harassment, including denial of accommodation in New Delhi and verbal abuse in Mumbai. Their belongings have been vandalized and looted, and in several cases, their mobile phones were damaged when they attempted to record these attacks. Some traders have been forced to leave their homes, resulting in disruption of livelihoods built over generations and causing severe psychological distress.

“Targeting innocent Kashmiri traders and students only deepens alienation and mistrust, which is exactly what hostile forces seek to exploit. Kashmiris are not outsiders; they are equal citizens of India, entitled to the same rights, freedoms, and protections under the Constitution,” he said.

He emphasized that in several states, timely intervention by authorities has helped ensure the safety of Kashmiri students and traders and facilitated redressal. However, Himachal Pradesh presents a deeply disturbing picture. Despite repeated representations, assurances, and interventions at multiple levels, incidents continue to recur with worrying regularity, while effective action on the ground has remained largely absent. Despite repeated attacks, there has been little concrete action, no prompt or effective registration of FIRs in several cases, no visible arrests or deterrent measures, and no sustained effort to ensure the safety and confidence of affected communities. The continued inaction has emboldened miscreants and created an atmosphere of fear, leaving vulnerable traders at the mercy of mobs instead of being protected by the rule of law.

The association has urged the NHRC to seek detailed reports from the Chief Ministers and Directors General of Police of the concerned states on all reported incidents, FIRs, arrests, prosecutions, and preventive measures taken. The Association also called for immediate and decisive action to ensure accountability where lapses have occurred, strict enforcement of the law, credible security and monitoring mechanisms, and protection of Kashmiri students and traders. Association emphasized that safeguarding the safety, dignity, and constitutional rights of Kashmiri shawl sellers, students, and their families is essential to restore confidence, prevent further alienation, and reaffirm the Union Government’s commitment to protecting every citizen.

Restore statehood to J&K as promised, Surinder Chowdary tells New Delhi

Restore statehood to J&K as promised, Surinder Chowdary tells New Delhi

Jammu, Jan 01: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chowdary on Thursday once again reminded New Delhi of its commitment to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and urged the Centre to fulfil the promise without further delay.

Talking to reporters in Jammu, Chowdary said the people of Jammu and Kashmir were repeatedly assured that statehood would be restored at an appropriate time, but the promise remains unfulfilled. He stressed that restoring statehood is not a favour but a democratic right of the people.

Launching a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Deputy Chief Minister said the BJP ruled Jammu and Kashmir for 11 years and failed miserably on multiple fronts. He said that despite its long rule, the party could not address core issues faced by the people and left behind governance challenges.

Chowdary questioned the BJP’s demand for accountability from the present elected government, stating that the current dispensation is only one year old. He said it is unjustified for the BJP to seek accountability when it had more than a decade in power and must first answer for its own record.

He added that the elected government is committed to democratic governance, development and safeguarding the rights of the people, and will continue to raise the issue of statehood at every appropriate forum.

The Deputy Chief Minister reiterated that restoring statehood would strengthen democratic institutions, improve governance and help address regional aspirations across Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]

Centre hikes excise duty on cigarettes, new rates from Feb 1

Srinagar, Jan 01: The Finance Ministry has notified a major revision in excise duty on cigarettes and other tobacco products, with the new rates set to come into effect from February 1, 2026.

According to the official notification the government has imposed an additional excise duty on cigarettes ranging from Rs 2,050 to Rs 8,500 per 1,000 sticks. The revised duty structure varies depending on the length and type of cigarettes.

The newly notified excise duty will be levied over and above the existing 40 percent Goods and Services Tax applicable to cigarettes, tobacco and similar products. This effectively increases the overall tax burden on tobacco consumption.

The revision is aimed at strengthening revenue collection while also discouraging the consumption of tobacco products, which pose serious public health risks. Cigarettes in higher length categories are expected to witness a sharper increase in prices due to the higher excise slabs.

The revised excise duty rates will apply uniformly across India once implemented from February 1, 2026, as per the notification. [KNT]

CM Omar Abdullah to hold talks with Amit Shah soon: NC MP Ramzan

Srinagar, Jan 01: Stressing that there is no rift within the National Conference, Rajya Sabha MP Chowdry Ramzan on Thursday said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will soon meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah, adding that party MP Aga Ruhullah is neither against the party nor its leadership.

Talking to reporters here after a felicitation ceremony organised following his appointment as Additional General Secretary of the National Conference, Ramzan said the party is united and focused on its objectives. He said differences, if any, are only in approach and not in intent.

“There is no rift in the party. Aga Ruhullah is young and wants things to happen quickly. That is the only difference. Our goals and direction are the same, but such matters take time to materialise,” Ramzan said.

He said he recently met Aga Ruhullah during the Parliament session and found him fully aligned with the party leadership. “I did not find him against the party or its leadership. He is committed to the same political objectives,” he added.

On engagement with the Centre, Ramzan said a memorandum of demands has already been submitted to the Union Home Minister, who has assured that the issues raised will be addressed. “The Home Minister has given an assurance, and the Chief Minister will meet him soon to discuss other related matters,” he said.

Dismissing claims of delay by the Centre, Ramzan said it has been only a short period since his meeting with Shah. “It has been just about ten days. These processes take time and there is no deliberate delay,” he maintained.

Ramzan also informed that a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs is scheduled to be held in Port Blair, where he will participate as a committee member. “Important issues will come up for discussion during the meeting,” he said.

On party organisation, he said NC workers are active across Jammu and Kashmir but emphasised the need for stronger outreach. “We need to engage more with our workers, especially in far-flung areas, understand their issues and strengthen the party at the grassroots,” Ramzan said, reiterating his commitment to further strengthening the National Conference.

India, Pakistan exchange list of nuclear installations

India, Pakistan exchange list of nuclear installations

New Delhi, Jan 01: Continuing an over three-decade practice, India and Pakistan on Thursday exchanged a list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral pact that prohibits the two sides from attacking each other’s atomic facilities.

The exchange of the list came even as the ties between the two countries remain under deep freeze following four-day military hostilities last May.

The list exchange took place under the provisions of an agreement on the prohibition of attack against nuclear installations and facilities, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

It was done simultaneously through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.

“India and Pakistan today exchanged, through diplomatic channels, simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, the list of nuclear installations and facilities, covered under the agreement on the prohibition of attack against nuclear installations and facilities between India and Pakistan,” the MEA said.

The agreement was signed on December 31, 1988, and came into force on January 27 1991.

The pact mandates the two countries to inform each other of nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the agreement on the first of January of every calendar year.

“This is the 35th consecutive exchange of such lists between the two countries, the first one having taken place on 1 January 1992,” the MEA said in a brief statement.

Omar Abdullah promised one lakh jobs, delivered nepotism: LoP Sunil Sharma

Omar Abdullah promised one lakh jobs, delivered nepotism: LoP Sunil Sharma

Jammu, Dec 31: Leader of Opposition Shri Sunil Sharma today launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC) government, accusing it of institutionalising nepotism and betraying the aspirations of unemployed youth in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sunil Sharma said that despite tall promises made during elections, the Omar Abdullah-led government has failed to generate employment opportunities for deserving youth. Instead of opening doors for educated and qualified young aspirants, the government has resorted to re-employing retired officials through questionable administrative decisions.

He pointed out that a recently reappointed retired officer—reportedly a close relative of a senior political leader—was brought back into service through orders issued by the General Administration Department (GAD). Earlier, another retired official was similarly accommodated in the Tourism Department.

Terming these actions as “anti-youth and anti-merit,” the Leader of Opposition said the NC government has severely eroded public trust and reduced its promise of providing one lakh jobs to a mockery.

“Omar Abdullah promised one lakh jobs to unemployed youth. What has been delivered instead is blatant nepotism, where posts are handed out to relatives and favourites. This betrayal of public trust is unacceptable, and the government must immediately put an end to such unethical and corrupt practices,” Shri Sharma said.

Targeting the NC government’s welfare claims, Sharma dismissed the promise of subsidised electricity as misleading and deceptive.

“Where are the 200 free electricity units promised in the last budget session? Even under the Prime Minister’s Surya Urja Muft Bijli Yojana, nearly eight lakh registered families in Jammu and Kashmir are still waiting. This government survives on false assurances and repeated failures,” he stated.

The Leader of Opposition further said that the NC government has failed comprehensively on major fronts, including employment generation, governance, and development.

“They remain engaged in rhetoric and diversionary narratives, while development on the ground remains stagnant. Projects completed during the Lieutenant Governor’s administration are now being projected by NC ministers merely for publicity and photo opportunities,” he added.

Referring to his recent visit to Assam, Sunil Sharma expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s growing strength across the country.

“The BJP is poised to form the government in Assam for the third consecutive time, and West Bengal will follow. The people of India are choosing development, transparency, and good governance over deception,” he concluded.

Good relations with neighbours key to overcoming challenges: Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, Jan 01: National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, on Thursday expressed hope that cordial relations with neighbouring countries would help overcome prevailing challenges, saying that with God’s grace, better days lie ahead.

Speaking to the media persons, Dr Abdullah welcomed recent diplomatic developments and said he was encouraged by India’s External Affairs Minister attending the last rites of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

He described Bangladesh as an old and trusted friend of India and stressed the need to further strengthen such regional friendships.

Commenting on the difficulties faced by Kashmir’s traditional sectors, including shawl traders and artisans, Abdullah said hardships are part of life but cautioned people against falling prey to divisive and radical mindsets.

He said that certain elements are pursuing dangerous paths with questionable intentions.

Issuing a strong warning, the NC chief said attempts were being made to impose authoritarian systems and extremist ideologies. Drawing a parallel with history, he said such ideologies do not last forever and will eventually come to an end, just as Nazism did. (KNC)
