Farooq defends leaders’ house arrest

Srinagar, Dec 28: National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah on Sunday defended the house arrest of his party’s MP Aga Syed Ruhullah and other leaders, saying they want to create “turmoil”, which would not be allowed.

Talking to reporters at Pahalgam in south Kashmir, Abdullah said the leaders were probably not happy that J&K was on the path of progress.

“You should ask those leaders what they want to do. We are doing as much as we can. Perhaps, they do not like that J&K is progressing. They want turmoil, which we will not allow to happen,” he said.

Authorities on Sunday placed several leaders, including Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah, PDP MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, PDP leader Iltija Mufti, and former Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo, under house arrest to prevent them from taking part in protests against the existing reservation policy.

On the situation in Bangladesh, Abdullah expressed hope that peaceful elections would be held in the neighbouring country so that a new government could be formed.

“We hope the new government will tread the path of friendship with India,” he said.

Knife attack near Suriname’s capital Paramaribo kills at least 9 people, including kids; police say

Paramaribo (Suriname), Dec 28: A knife attack outside Suriname’s capital of Paramaribo killed at least nine people, including five children, police said Sunday.

Officials said the victims included four of the attacker’s children and neighbours who came to their aid. A neighbour’s child was also killed. Local media reported the victims were located at multiple homes.

The attack took place in Richelieu in the Commewijne district about 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of Paramaribo.

In a statement Sunday, Suriname’s Police Corps said the male suspect attempted to attack police officers who arrived on the scene and he was injured during his arrest. He is now recovering in a hospital.

Police said a sixth child and another adult were seriously injured in the attack and were being treated at a hospital in Paramaribo.

On her Facebook page, Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons reacted to the news, saying the attacker took the life of his children and his neighbours.

“I wish all the bereaved much strength, resilience, and comfort in this unimaginably difficult time,” Geerlings-Simons wrote in Dutch, the nation’s official language.

Suriname, a former Dutch colony, is the smallest independent nation in South America, with a population of approximately 600,000 people. It has traditionally had one of the lowest murder rates in the region. But the murder rate spiked in 2024 to 30 homicides per 100,000 residents, according to data gathered by the think tank Insight Crime.

‘Start where you are, use what you have, never stop believing’

‘Start where you are, use what you have, never stop believing’

“I started from scratch in 2007, completely homemade, with a company called YS Foods and Spices in Chadoora, Budgam,” recalls Syed Ghulam Mustafa Masoodi, his eyes lighting up at the memory. What began in a modest setup would eventually become Adfar Agro Foods and Spices—one of J&K’s most celebrated emerging spice brands.

But Masoodi’s journey didn’t start with spices. He was a fruit dealer and grower, travelling outside Kashmir for trade purposes. During these trips, he noticed something remarkable. “Wherever I went, Kashmir spices were hot favourites across the globe,” he says.

“People weren’t just buying them—they were craving that authentic Kashmiri experience.”

The early years tested every ounce of Masoodi’s determination. Just as YS Foods was finding its footing, Kashmir was engulfed in disturbances during 2008 and 2010. Supply chains collapsed. Operations ground to a halt. The future looked bleak.

“Those were the darkest days,” Masoodi admits. “There were moments when continuing seemed impossible.”

Most entrepreneurs would have quit. Masoodi doubled down.

In 2011, while uncertainty still gripped the valley, Masoodi made a bold move. He purchased land at the Industrial Estate in Rangreth and began upgrading his facilities. It was a massive gamble—investing heavily when others were pulling back.

“I had to crawl for my success,” he reflects. “It wasn’t a big leap at one go. But I believed in Kashmir’s spices, and I believed in what we could build.”

By 2012, the new facility was ready. Former Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather inaugurated the plant at Rangreth—a moment of validation that the government recognised his vision. But Masoodi wasn’t satisfied with regional success. He wanted to take Kashmir to the world.

In 2014, the company rebranded as Adfar Agro Foods and Spices, operating from its expanded Rangreth facility. The transformation was complete—from homemade operations to industrial-scale production, all while maintaining uncompromising quality standards certified by FSSAI.

“The encouragement we received at various platforms, both nationally as well as internationally, including at Dubai, was overwhelming,” Masoodi shares, recalling his participation in the Indo Food exhibition in 2017 and 2018. For a brand from Kashmir to showcase alongside international giants was both humbling and exhilarating.

With each appearance, strengthening Adfar’s reputation. By 2021, the company had achieved nationwide representation through partnerships with the help of the Industries and Commerce Department and JKTPO. Kashmir’s authentic flavours were now reaching homes across India.

Food festivals and hospitality events began specifically recommending Adfar products. Chefs whispered about the superior quality. Food critics took notice. The brand that started in a small facility in Chadoora was becoming a household name among those who valued authenticity.

Then came 2025—the year everything crystallised.

“Receiving recognition from Chef Sanjeev Kapoor was surreal,” Masoodi says, his voice thick with emotion. “Here was India’s most celebrated culinary icon, and he was acknowledging our work. It validated every struggle, every sleepless night, every moment of doubt.”

Adfar Agro Foods was honoured as the “Most Emerging Brand” at India’s most prominent Food & Hospitality Awards, presented by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor himself. The company also received an appreciation certificate from FSSAI Jammu and Kashmir for maintaining exemplary food safety standards.

For a man who started with homemade operations during some of Kashmir’s most turbulent years, standing on that stage represented more than business success. It was proof that quality, perseverance, and vision could overcome any obstacle.

“My son represents the future,” Masoodi says with unmistakable pride. “He understands markets, technology, and global trends in ways my generation couldn’t have imagined.”

Syed Faizan Masoodi, now serving as CEO, is among the youngest chief executives in Jammu and Kashmir. While his father built the foundation through grit and determination, Faizan is expanding the empire with innovation and digital savvy. Together, they represent the perfect blend of experience and ambition.

“He respects our roots, our commitment to quality, and our responsibility to Kashmir’s farmers,” Masoodi adds. “That’s what will keep Adfar growing for generations.”

What’s the secret behind Adfar’s success? Masoodi doesn’t hesitate.

“Never compromise on quality. Never,” he emphasises. “In an age where everyone is cutting costs, we’ve remained committed to authenticity. Our customers taste the difference, and that’s why they trust us.”

He also credits the farmers and workers who supply the raw materials. “Our success is their success,” he insists. “We’re not just building a brand—we’re uplifting entire communities.”

Today, Adfar Agro Foods offers a full range of premium Kashmiri spices, from the finest saffron to aromatic cardamom, from rich Kashmiri chilli to fragrant fennel. Each product carries the promise that first drove Masoodi to start this journey: authenticity you can taste.

For young entrepreneurs watching from the sidelines, Masoodi’s advice is simple but powerful.

“Your circumstances don’t define your potential—your vision does,” he says. “I started during some of the most difficult times in Kashmir’s recent history. If I had waited for perfect conditions, I’d still be waiting. Start where you are, use what you have, and never stop believing.”

He pauses, then adds with a smile, “And remember—where there is a will, there is always a way.”

From a fruit dealer observing the global love for Kashmiri spices to the founder of a nationally acclaimed brand, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Masoodi’s journey proves that dreams seasoned with determination can overcome any adversity. As Adfar Agro Foods continues expanding its reach, it carries not just the flavours of Kashmir but the inspiring story of one man who refused to let circumstances define his destiny.

PHE employees to stage protest today

Jammu, Dec 28: The PHE Employees United Front (PHEEUF) will hold a day-long protest demonstration in the office premises of Chief Engineer Jal Shakti (PHE) department, Jal Bhawan Narwal, Jammu, on Monday.

PHEEUF leaders, while announcing it on Sunday, stated that the decision was aimed at registering a protest against the PHE administration, which, they alleged, “miserably failed to solve the demands of both the permanent employees and daily wagers, mainly regularisation (of daily wagers) and conducting DPC meeting regarding promotion of the employees.”

The senior leaders of the employees Rajesh Jamwal, Balwader Raj, Muhammad Mushtaq, Bakshi Singh, Subhash Verma and Kartar Chand Dubey, appealed to the employees to reach the venue on Monday, December 29, 2025, in large numbers at 11 am to make the demonstration successful.

Effective governance requires consultation, not control: JKSA

Srinagar, Dec 28: The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Sunday strongly condemned police action against students to thwart the scheduled protest in Srinagar on Sunday for pressing the government to act on the reservation policy.

“These heavy-handed measures were deployed solely to prevent a peaceful protest demanding a fair and equal reservation policy,” JKSA said in a statement. National Convenor of Association, Nasir Khuehami said: “We have always prioritised discussion over discord. However, treating students; the future of this region as adversaries is a grave mistake. These young people are not agitators but informed citizens standing up for their constitutional rights to justice and equality. The government of the day must understand that the grievances raised by the students are not secessionist in nature, nor are they anti-national.”

He emphasised that “these are constitutional grievances, and we expect the authorities to respond to them within a constitutional framework.”

“No office in this country stands above the Constitution, and the students have maintained constitutional methods and approaches throughout their movement. Their demands are rooted in fairness, not in defiance,” he added. .

While the planned sit-in has been cancelled due to administrative restrictions, the government cannot overlook the legitimacy of these concerns, he said. By detaining students, the authorities have inadvertently acknowledged that the reservation policy indeed requires serious review and engagement, he added.

JKSA has urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to “move from containment to conversation, and from intimidation to inclusion.” “We appeal to the government to reconsider its current policies and guidelines regarding student voices and to actively engage with them on matters of public concern,” he added.

It added that, the discussion on the reservation policy must be conducted through genuine dialogue, ensuring that the voices of students are heard, their concerns are acknowledged, and a fair and transparent solution is reached. “It is time to stop criminalising dissent and start listening to the youth, who seek nothing but justice, equity, and adherence to constitutional principles,” he further added

NIA conference reaffirms PM’s zero tolerance terror doctrine

New Delhi, Dec 28: Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s firm directive on zero tolerance to terrorism, the 5th anti-terror conference of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) concluded with a strong emphasis on enhancing India’s anti-terror capacity, supported by a model Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) structure designed to enhance coordination and seamless real-time information exchange among the central and state security and investigative agencies.

The conference was inaugurated on Friday by Union Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah saw the Centre reiterate its policy of no tolerance for terrorism in any form, and its commitment to strengthening the country’s anti-terror apparatus.

Addressing the meet, the Home Minister directed the states to expeditiously implement the uniform ATS structure to strengthen India’s counter-terrorism capabilities.

“Without the availability of robust, uniform, and consistent operational capacity across the country, we cannot ensure proper use of intelligence and effective coordinated counteractions,” he said.

Shah lauded the operational and investigative success of various agencies and state police forces in the two recent terror attack cases of Pahalgam and the Delhi car blast.

“These agencies made the country proud with their thorough actions in the Pahalgam targeted attack case,” he said.

Referring to the successful tracking and elimination of the three terrorists involved in the attack, the Home Minister said, “This is the first terrorist incident in which we punished the people who planned the act of terrorism through ‘Operation Sindoor’, and the terrorists who carried out the attack were neutralised through ‘Operation Mahadev.’”

He termed the twin action as “a strong and decisive response from the Government of India, India’s security forces, and the people of India to the terrorist masterminds in Pakistan.”

Pointing to the constantly changing technology and terror landscape, Shah stressed the importance of continuously checking and re-evaluating it.

He stressed the need for all agencies, in Centre and states, to address international dimensions, like cyber warfare, hybrid warfare alertness, multi security layering, and free flow of intelligence.

Underlining the importance of strengthening their investigation and prosecution capabilities, the Home Minister asked the states to conduct regular training for their security and Police personnel.

He congratulated all the officers and staff who were honoured with service medals for their outstanding performance.

Shah also paid heartfelt tributes to over 36,000 CAPFs personnel and police personnel across the country who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan hailed the institutionalisation of the conference as a tool to underline India’s zero tolerance to terrorism in any form, be it cross-border terror, narco terrorism, or cyber-enabled terrorism.

He stressed the need to be more vigilant about various threats facing the country, particularly those arising from radicalisation, recruitment, and exploitation of vulnerable youth to carry out violent acts.

“The newly-initiated Track 2 in the anti-terror conference discussed issues like digital device data, and big data analytics, but, most importantly, unmasking digital anonymity,” the Home Secretary said.

He lauded the over 90 percent conviction rate delivered by the NIA, and said the Centre’s aim was to scale conviction rates across all Police forces in the country to the same level.

The conference focused on the lessons learnt during investigations, preemptive disruptions of terror modules, learnings in various theatres such as Left Wing Extremism, North East, and various hybrid threats to national security.

It served as a platform to explore and evaluate the new security threats, such as deepfakes and hybrid warfare, and also emphasised the need for digital forensics and data analysis in counter-terrorism investigations.

Other significant discussions were focused on countering financing of terrorism, maritime terrorism and illicit trafficking and evolving counter-terrorism jurisprudence.

The inaugural session was attended by the heads of State Police, CPOs, and CAPFs, in addition to over 150 delegates from several state and UT police and central organisations who attended the two-day conference.

Union Ministers of State Nityanand Rai and Bandi Sanjay Kumar were also present at the inauguration.

Myanmar’s 1st of 3 phases vote completed

New Delhi, Dec 28: The first of three phases of Myanmar’s voting took place on Sunday in an election widely dismissed by critics as illegitimate, with major political parties dissolved, senior leaders jailed, and large parts of the country unable to participate because of ongoing civil war.

BBC reported that the military government is conducting the ballot in phases nearly five years after seizing power in a coup that triggered mass protests and escalated into nationwide armed conflict. Observers say the junta, backed by China, is seeking to legitimise and entrench its rule amid a prolonged political and military stalemate.

Authorities have charged more than 200 people under a new election law for opposing or disrupting the polls, with penalties that include lengthy prison terms and the death sentence. Voting began amid reports of violence.

Explosions were reported in at least two regions. In the Mandalay region, three people were taken to hospital after a rocket struck an uninhabited house in the early hours of Sunday, leaving one person in serious condition.

In Myawaddy township near the Thai border, a series of blasts late on Saturday damaged more than ten houses. Local residents reported that a child was killed and three others were critically injured.

Despite the unrest, some voters described the polling process as more tightly controlled than in previous elections.
