Immediate resolution needed, says Grand Mufti of India

Immediate resolution needed, says Grand Mufti of India

New Delhi, Dec 27: Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, the Grand Mufti of India, has expressed deep concern and distress over the demolition of nearly two hundred houses in the Fakheer Layout and Wasim Layout colonies on Bande Road near Yelahanka, Bengaluru. He stated that demolishing homes in an area predominantly inhabited by economically marginalized Muslim and Dalit families, especially during severe cold conditions, is in no way humane.

The Grand Mufti emphasized that housing is one of the most basic human needs and that it is unjustifiable for a responsible government to demolish shelters without ensuring humane alternatives. He stressed that actions such as demolition should be undertaken only after allowing sufficient time, exercising humanitarian consideration, and ensuring proper remedies and rehabilitation. He further called for the immediate rehabilitation of families who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and important documents.

Seeking urgent intervention, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad held discussions with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka and other concerned government authorities, including a telephonic conversation with the Chief Minister. He urged the government to immediately identify suitable land and ensure adequate housing facilities for all affected families. Until permanent rehabilitation is arranged, he insisted that the government must take the initiative to provide temporary shelters and essential facilities.

Following the Grand Mufti’s directive to extend immediate humanitarian assistance, Sunni leaders in Bengaluru mobilized relief efforts. Acting on these instructions, SYS Santhwanam volunteers have reached the affected area and are actively engaged in relief and rehabilitation activities, arranging all possible temporary support for families left homeless in the harsh cold.

The Grand Mufti expressed hope that the Government of Karnataka will adopt a just, humane, and compassionate approach and take appropriate measures to address the plight of these displaced and vulnerable families at the earliest.

Bilal Gani Lone voices support for Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, appeals for responsible discourse

Bilal Gani Lone voices support for Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, appeals for responsible discourse

Srinagar Dec 27: While defending Mirwaiz Umar Farooq senior political leader Bilal Gani Lone on saturday cautioned against what he termed as shallow, dishonest and dangerous attempts to reduce the Mirwaiz’s stature to social media optics.

According to a statement issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Lone said that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s stature cannot be measured by a Twitter bio and that diminishing his role through social media commentary reflects a profound misunderstanding of his position and responsibilities. He said that beyond the murky world of politics, Mirwaiz saheb is the custodian of an institution that represents faith, culture and collective identity. He added that as a political leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s consistent position has always been peace, unity and reconciliation, never the pursuit of power.

Recalling his long association with the Mirwaiz, Lone said he has known and worked with him for over two decades and can personally vouch for his sincerity, sense of purpose and unwavering commitment to the self respect and dignity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has paid an enormous personal price from a very young age, losing both his father and later his uncle to the conflict, while shouldering responsibilities that many of his critics would lack the courage to accept, he said.

Lone said it is deeply ironic and hurtful that sections of the political class, social media trolling machinery and what he termed white collar criminals are indulging in abuse, conspiracy theories and character assassination, without acknowledging the dangerous consequences such campaigns have produced in the past. He said everyone falters and makes mistakes, but that does not define a person as a bad human being. He said what truly matters is the ability to course correct, adapt and find more practical ways to create meaningful impact as times and circumstances evolve, adding that this is what responsible leadership demands.

He also said rigidity does not resolve conflicts but instead deepens them, and that addressing complex political challenges requires foresight, vision and a willingness to accept ground realities so that society can move forward without inflicting further harm.

He said politics is not static and demands evolution, particularly in asymmetrical conflicts where lives are at stake. He added that the principles of human dignity, respect and preservation of life are non negotiable.

Questioning the motives of those attacking Mirwaiz Umar Farooq over a bio change, Lone asked them to clarify whether they genuinely stand for peace or are comfortable with the continuation of conflict and the loss of more lives. He said it is easy to pontificate from the comfort of one’s home, but far harder to stand where Mirwaiz saheb stands and confront the brutal realities that come with that position.

Lone said the All Parties Hurriyat Conference is an idea, not a gospel truth frozen in time, and that ideas must evolve with changing political realities if lives are to be saved and people’s honour preserved. He warned that many of those attacking the Mirwaiz fail to grasp the damage they are causing, not only to society, but also to the very idea of a well meaning Kashmiri that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq represents.

While affirming that asking questions is legitimate in a democracy, Lone cautioned that reckless vilification is creating a dangerous situation for the Mirwaiz, compromising not only his dignity but also his security. He said such conduct is irresponsible and should invite accountability under the law.

Reiterating his personal bond, Lone said he regards Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as a younger brother, irrespective of political differences, and that disagreements have never diminished his responsibility to stand by him as a friend and as a matter of principle. He said these values were instilled in him by his father, who sacrificed his life in pursuit of peace and reconciliation.

Lone said he continues to carry that mission forward through democratic means, seeking relief and dignity for people who have been wronged, humiliated and abused. He urged Mirwaiz’s critics to look inward before pointing fingers at others. He said honest introspection may offer a much needed reality check on the fraud, deceit and sheer nastiness that many themselves promote and practise in Kashmir, ironically in the name of politics and so called change.

GMC Srinagar issues urgent advisory as winter triggers spike in heart emergencies

Srinagar, Dec 27: With Kashmir in grip of harsh winter, the Department of Cardiology at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar today issued a public advisory warning of a significant rise in cardiac emergencies.

“Delay can be fatal,” the advisory highlights. It’s details how extreme cold can prove deadly for vulnerable individuals. It urges immediate preventive steps and awareness of warning signs.

Medical experts note that cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict, raising blood pressure and forcing the heart to work harder. This phenomenon is linked to higher rates of heart attacks globally.

Who is Most at Risk?

Individuals with known heart disease or previous heart attack or stroke.

Patients with hypertension, diabetes, or kidney disease.

Elderly persons and smokers.

Those who abruptly increase physical activity during cold mornings.

Preventive Measures

Dress warmly, particularly protecting the chest, head and extremities.

Avoid early-morning exposure to extreme cold.

Continue all prescribed heart medications without interruption.

Monitor blood pressure regularly, as winter readings tend to rise.

Exercise moderately and avoid sudden strenuous exertion.

Seek prompt treatment for respiratory infections, which can trigger cardiac events.

“Timely medical intervention saves lives. Waiting for symptoms to pass can have irreversible consequences,” the advisory stresses.

People with heart disease are advised to keep emergency contact numbers readily available, seek immediate medical care at the nearest hospital. Most winter-related cardiac emergencies are preventable, the advisory states.

The Board has made the promotion of Sanskrit and Vedic education a top priority. This is highlighted by a Rs 1.5 crore funding grant to Kathua’s Chudamani Sanskrit Santhan Nyas and ongoing support for various Sanskrit and Ved Pathshallas and Gurukuls.

The Board’s Gurukul has achieved national distinction. The sustained efforts have also earned the Shrine Board numerous national level awards for environmental excellence.

Kashmiri Pandit legacy central to Kashmir’s composite culture: Dr Jitendra Singh

Kashmiri Pandit legacy central to Kashmir’s composite culture: Dr Jitendra Singh

Jammu, Dec 27: Expressing concern over the continuing dilution of the community’s cultural and linguistic ethos, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has stressed the need for sustained efforts to preserve the Kashmiri Pandit legacy and emphasised that preserving the community’s cultural, linguistic and civilisational ethos is essential for sustaining Kashmir’s composite culture, which remains incomplete without the Kashmiri Pandits.

The Minister said that the Modi government has taken decisive and sustained action against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir over the past eleven years, resulting in a significant decline in terror incidents, stone-pelting and targeted killings. He said this reflects strong political will, and marks a clear departure from earlier approaches that lacked firmness in dealing with terrorism.

Dr Jitendra Singh was speaking at a programme organised here to mark the death anniversary of Pandit Prem Nath Bhat, a noted lawyer and journalist who was killed by terrorists on 27 December, 1989. Paying tributes to Pandit Bhat, the Minister said his sacrifice symbolises the suffering endured by the Kashmiri Pandit community due to terrorism and targeted violence.

Dr Jitendra Singh said terrorism inflicted grave human suffering and severely disrupted the social harmony of Kashmir. He noted that for several years, the human rights of victims of terrorism, particularly Kashmiri Pandits, were overlooked due to a selective and inconsistent definition of terrorism. This, he said, aggravated the injustice faced by those who were forced to leave their homes and abandon their ancestral roots. He said the Kashmiri Pandit community has demonstrated extraordinary resilience and an inherent capacity to survive and thrive despite decades of displacement and adversity.

Highlighting Kashmir’s centuries-old composite and pluralistic culture, Dr Jitendra Singh said Kashmiri Pandits have been an inseparable part of the Valley’s civilisational fabric. Their contributions to education, literature, administration and social values provided a stabilising and rational influence that benefitted the entire society. He expressed concern over the continuing dilution of cultural and linguistic ethos and stressed the need for sustained efforts to preserve the Kashmiri Pandit legacy. The Minister emphasised that preserving the community’s cultural, linguistic and civilisational ethos is essential for sustaining Kashmir’s composite culture, which remains incomplete without the Kashmiri Pandits.

Dr Jitendra Singh assured that the government is sincere, trustworthy and fully committed to addressing the long-pending demands of the Kashmiri Pandit community. He said he would ensure that these demands are taken up and addressed to the maximum extent possible. He also suggested that the community undertake a structured exercise to compile demands already met by the government, and clearly identify the remaining issues. This consolidated representation, he said, could then be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs for consideration.

Dr Jitendra Singh further noted that the government’s approach aims not only at rehabilitation but also at preserving the cultural and social fabric of the Valley, ensuring that the Kashmiri Pandit community’s contributions are recognised and sustained for future generations.

Protests outside Lok Bhavan in Jammu, LG’s effigy burnt over medical college admission row

Protests outside Lok Bhavan in Jammu, LG’s effigy burnt over medical college admission row

Jammu, Dec 27: Dozens of protesters on Saturday gathered outside Lok Bhavan here and set ablaze an effigy of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, demanding revocation of the MBBS admission list of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi.

Raising slogans such as “LG go back”, the protest was organised by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, a recently-formed conglomeration of various right-wing organizations.

JK BJP’s women activists and several trade leaders including president of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries Arun Gupta also joined the protest.

The protest led to the blocking of the main road outside Lok Bhavan, resulting in traffic snarls on adjoining roads and causing hardship to commuters for more than one-and-a-half hours.

Police personnel were deployed in strength outside the Lok Bhavan to maintain law and order and regulate traffic, and a tough time to push back protesters who tried to move inside the complex.

“We will continue our protest till the resolution of our genuine demands which are related to our faith. We are not against students of any particular religion, we just want the seats in the medical college to be reserved for Hindu students alone,” Samiti convener Colonel Sukhvir Singh Mankotia told reporters.

He said they have staged the protest outside the Lok Bhavan because Lt Governor is the chairman of the shrine board and it is his responsibility to ensure that the religious sentiments of any community should not be hurt.

Mankotia said the government should close the medical college if there is any problem in reserving the seats for the Hindu students.

The controversy began after admissions for the inaugural MBBS batch of 50 students were completed through the NEET merit list last month. This batch includes 42 Muslim candidates, mostly from Kashmir, seven Hindu students from Jammu and one Sikh candidate.

The protests were started by right-wing Hindu groups which later led to the formation of the Sangarsh Samiti and its leaders have already held talks with Lt Governor and leaders of the central government including Union health minister.

The Association said that it has taken strong cognisance of yet another disturbing incident in which a Kashmiri shawl vendor was harassed, abused and heckled in Kaithal (Kethal), Haryana.

JKSA condemned the episode, stating that such repeated acts of intimidation against innocent Kashmiri traders are deeply condemnable and reflect a worrying pattern of prejudice and hostility.

According to the statement, the National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, spoke to Rajeev Jaitly, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister of Haryana, and requested his immediate intervention in the matter. Responding to Khuehami, Jaitly assured that “such acts of violence and intimidation against Kashmiri shawl sellers will not be tolerated at any cost,” and that “strict action will be taken in connection with the incident that occurred in the Kaithal, Kurukshetra area of Haryana.”
