Won’t leave students alone: Aga Ruhullah

Budgam, Dec 27: Member Parliament Aga Ruhullah on Saturday said he will not allow agitating students to feel isolated and vowed to raise their issue at every forum.

Speaking to reporters during Awami Darbar at Khansahib Budgam, Aga Ruhullah said, “If the government fails to take students into confidence over the pending decision on the reservation issue, I will not hesitate to join their protest.”
He said, “I have made a simple and straightforward demand before the authorities— to engage with the students and apprise them of the status of the decision-making process.”

“Talk to the students, tell them what decisions have been taken, what is the status of the file. If something falls under the oath of secrecy, don’t disclose those details, but at least take the students into confidence,” he said.

Ruhullah expressed concern over what he termed as repeated notifications and delays that have caused disappointment among students. “If the government cannot even talk to them, then I will not let these students be alone. If they want someone to speak for them, I am ready for it and will give full support,” he said.

Aga Ruhullah said there were still a few hours left for the authorities to show empathy. “If they have even a little sympathy for the students, they should call them, talk to them, and inform them about where the process stands and what steps, if any, have been taken,” he added.

He reiterated that the students will decide the venue of the protest. “Wherever the students sit, I will sit there,” Aga Ruhullah said.

On a lynching issue at Bangladesh and India, the MP termed lynching and extrajudicial killings as terrorism, irrespective of religion or geography. “Whether it happens in India or Bangladesh, whether the victim is Muslim or non-Muslim, lynching is terrorism. Killing of any innocent person through mob violence amounts to terrorism,” he said, adding that such acts must be opposed unequivocally. —(KNO)

Modi said that the vision of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, continues to guide generations towards service and selfless duty.

“On the sacred Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, we bow in reverence to him. He remains an embodiment of courage, compassion and sacrifice. His life and teachings inspire us to stand for truth, justice, righteousness and to protect human dignity,” he said in a post on ‘X’.

The prime minister also shared a few pictures of his visit to the Takhat Sri Harimandir Patna Sahib earlier this year, where he also had ‘darshan’ of the holy ‘Jore Sahib’ (a pair of shoes) belonging to Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Sahib Kaur.

On January 9, 2022, Modi had announced that December 26 would be observed as ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ to commemorate the martyrdom of Sahibzades Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, the sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh.

To mark Veer Bal Diwas, the government is organising programmes across the country aimed at informing and educating citizens about the extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice of the Sahibzades.

PM Modi has attended an event organised on the occasion of Veer Bal Diwas on Friday where he said the supreme sacrifice of the sahibzades (sons) of Guru Gobind Singh, represents the ultimate expression of India’s indomitable courage, valour and bravery against the cruel Mughal Sultanate, shaking the very existence of religious fanaticism and terror.

Cold wave tightens grip on Ladakh, snow likely over Zojila axis from Dec 30

Srinagar, Dec 27: The Meteorological Centre has issued a detailed weather outlook for the Union Territory of Ladakh, indicating a sharp fall in night temperatures and the likelihood of snowfall over high-altitude regions towards the end of December.

According to the forecast, the region is likely to witness partly cloudy conditions, followed by mostly cloudy skies on December 28. December 29 is expected to remain partly cloudy, while December 30 may see cloudy weather for most of the day.

During the night of December 30, there is a 55 to 60 percent chance of light snowfall over the Zojila Pass–Drass axis and parts of the Siachen Glacier area.

The weather system is expected to intensify between December 31 and January 1, bringing cold and cloudy conditions across the region. Light to moderate snowfall is likely at scattered locations over Zojila, Kargil and the Zanskar region, as well as higher reaches of Leh district.

Over 25 injured after mob attacks music concert in Bangladesh

Over 25 injured after mob attacks music concert in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Dec 27: A concert by popular Bangladeshi singer James was cancelled in Faridpur, around 120 kilometres from Dhaka, following an attack at the venue, injuring over 25 people, local media reported.

This comes amid the growing concerns over assaults on artists, performers, and cultural institutions across Bangladesh.

According to local reports, the concert was scheduled to begin at around 9 pm on Friday as part of celebrations marking the anniversary of a local school.

Trouble erupted when a group of attackers attempted to force their way into the venue and allegedly pelted bricks and stones at the audience.

Local residents said students present at the venue tried to resist the attackers, but the situation escalated, prompting local authorities to order the cancellation of the programme in the interest of safety, reports leading Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star.

The incident drew sharp reactions from exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen, who highlighted the episode as part of a disturbing trend unfolding in the country.

In a post on social media platform X, she wrote, “The cultural centre Chhayanaut has been burned to ashes. Udichi — the organisation that was built to foster a secular and progressive consciousness through the promotion of music, theatre, dance, recitation, and folk culture — has also been burned to ashes. Today, jihadists did not allow the renowned singer James to perform at an event.”

Nasreen also referred to earlier instances involving visiting artists, stating, “A few days ago, Siraj Ali Khan came to Dhaka. He is the grandson of Ali Akbar Khan, the son of the world-famous maestro Ustad Allauddin Khan. Siraj Ali Khan himself is a distinguished artist of the Maihar gharana.”

“He returned to India without performing any program in Dhaka, saying that he would not come to Bangladesh again until artists, music, and cultural institutions are safe,” she said.

The writer further added, “Two days ago, Ustad Rashid Khan’s son Arman Khan also declined Dhaka’s invitation. He too, made it clear that he does not wish to set foot in a Bangladesh inhabited by music-hating jihadists.”

James, a highly popular Bangladeshi singer-songwriter, guitarist, and composer, is also known for his work as a playback singer. He is the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the rock band ‘Nagar Baul’ and enjoys a massive following in Bangladesh.

Beyond his work in the Bangladeshi music scene, James has also sung several hit Hindi film songs, including ‘Bheegi Bheegi’ from the film ‘Gangster’ and ‘Alvida’ from ‘Life In A Metro’.

Observers say the disruption of a concert by an artist of James’ stature reflects how emboldened radical elements have become in Bangladesh in recent times.

Over the past months, cultural institutions such as Chhayanaut and Udichi, along with artists, journalists, and newspaper offices, have come under repeated attack as hardline Islamic radical mobs have increasingly taken to the streets, often with little visible intervention from the state.

The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government has faced criticism for failing to rein in violent mobs, with critics alleging that incidents of arson and targeted attacks are being allowed, or even orchestrated, to create a law-and-order crisis.

According to these critics, the worsening situation could be used as a pretext to delay elections currently scheduled for February.

EOW charge sheets Uri resident in livestock fraud case

Srinagar, Dec 27: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) has filed a chargesheet against a man from Baramulla– Muneer Ahmad Kataria S/o Noor-ud-Din Kataria R/o Uri Salamabad, A/P Shutrloo Rohama, District Baramulla– in the livestock fraud case, officials said on Saturday.

They said the chargesheet has been filed before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, in connection with FIR No. 17/2023 registered under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) against the accused. They said the accused was allegedly found involved in cheating and misappropriation of a huge amount of money in connection with the sale of livestock.

According to a statement issued by a Crime Branch Kashmir spokesperson, the case originated from a written complaint alleging cheating and misappropriation of a huge amount of money in connection with the sale of livestock. The complainant alleged that he was induced to supply cows and sheep on the assurance of payment under a Government ST Quota Scheme.

Acting on the complaint, he said, a detailed probe was initiated by the Economic Offences Wing Kashmir and during investigation, it surfaced that the complainant, who is engaged in the business of purchase and sale of cattle and sheep, supplied livestock including cows and sheep worth lakhs. Partial payments were made initially to gain his confidence. Subsequently, the accused issued several cheques amounting to ₹30 lakh, all of which were dishonoured due to insufficient balance. Despite repeated assurances, the remaining payment was never made, causing substantial financial loss to the complainant.

The investigation further revealed that the accused adopted a calculated modus operandi by executing misleading agreements and issuing dishonoured and fake cheques on the false pretext of procurement under a Government welfare scheme, thereby causing wrongful loss to the complainant and wrongful gain to himself.

On the basis of evidence collected, offences under Sections 420, 467, 468, and 471 RPC stand fully established against accused Muneer Ahmad Kataria, and the chargesheet has been duly presented before the competent court for judicial determination.

Mosque bombing in Syria leaves 8 dead, 18 wounded

Mosque bombing in Syria leaves 8 dead, 18 wounded

Idlib, Dec 27: A bombing at a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs during Friday prayers killed at least eight people and wounded 18 others, authorities said, as long-standing sectarian, ethnic and political fault lines continue to destabilise the country, even as large-scale fighting has subsided.

Images released by Syria’s state-run Arab News Agency showed blood on the mosque’s carpets, holes in the walls, shattered windows and fire damage. The Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque is located in Homs, Syria’s third-largest city, in an area of the Wadi al-Dhahab neighbourhood dominated by the Alawite minority.

SANA, citing a security source, said that preliminary investigations indicate that explosive devices were planted inside the mosque. Authorities were searching for the perpetrators, who have not yet been identified, and a security cordon was placed around the building, Syria’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.

A little-known group calling itself Saraya Ansar al-Sunna claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on its Telegram channel. The same group had previously claimed a suicide attack in June, in which a gunman opened fire and then detonated an explosive vest inside a Greek Orthodox church in Dweila, on the outskirts of Damascus, killing 25 people as worshippers prayed on a Sunday.

The Syrian government blamed the church attack on a cell of the Islamic State group, saying IS had also planned to target a Shiite Muslim shrine. IS did not claim responsibility for the attack. The group follows an extreme interpretation of Sunni Islam and considers Shiites to be infidels.

Syria recently joined the global coalition against IS and has launched a crackdown on IS cells, particularly after an attack on US forces earlier this month that killed two service members and a civilian translator.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “unequivocally condemns the deadly terrorist attack”, and stresses that those responsible must be identified and brought to justice, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. The UN chief also noted Syria’s commitment to combat terrorism and hold perpetrators accountable.

Targeted violence against Alawites

The country has experienced several waves of sectarian clashes since the fall of President Bashar Assad last year. Assad, himself an Alawite, fled the country to Russia. Members of his sect have been subjected to crackdowns.

In March, an ambush carried out by Assad’s supporters against security forces triggered days of violence that left hundreds of people dead, most of them Alawites.

In a statement, the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the Diaspora described the attack as “a continuation of the organised extremist terrorism specifically targeting the Alawite community, and increasingly other Syrian groups as well”.

The council held the Syrian government “fully and directly responsible for these crimes”, adding that “these criminal acts will not go unanswered”.

Local officials condemned Friday’s attack, saying it came “within the context of repeated desperate attempts to undermine security and stability and sow chaos among the Syrian people”.

“Syria reiterates its firm stance in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added in a statement.

“Remnants of the former regime, IS militants and collaborators have converged on a single goal: obstructing the path of the new state by undermining stability, threatening civil peace, and eroding the shared coexistence and common destiny of Syrians throughout history,” the Syrian information minister said in a post on X.

Huge explosion shattered mosque’s windows

The mosque’s deputy imam — a religious official who helps lead prayers — told Syria’s state-run Al-Ikhbariyah television that worshippers were praying when they “heard a loud explosion that knocked us to the ground. Fire broke out in one corner of the mosque. Those of us who were not wounded rushed to help get the injured out. Within minutes, general security forces and the Red Crescent arrived”.

“The explosion was huge,” he said. “It shattered the mosque’s windows and caused a fire that burned copies of the Holy Quran.”

Neighbouring countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Lebanon, also condemned the attack. In a statement, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed “Lebanon’s support for Syria in its fight against terrorism”.

On Monday, clashes erupted intermittently between Syrian government forces and Kurdish-led fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces, in mixed neighbourhoods in the northern city of Aleppo, forcing temporary closures of schools and public institutions and prompting civilians to shelter indoors. A late-evening ceasefire was then announced by both sides amid ongoing de-escalation efforts.

Tensions flared again on Friday between government security forces and Kurdish forces in Aleppo, with the two sides trading blame.

The head of internal security in Aleppo province, Col. Mohammad Abdul Ghani in a statement said snipers from the SDF opened fire on a Ministry of Interior checkpoint, wounding an officer, and security forces returned fire.

The SDF in a statement said that “factions affiliated with the Damascus government” targeted a checkpoint manned by Kurdish forces with rocket-propelled grenades and they returned fire.

No tampering with Aravalli Range will be allowed: Rajasthan CM

No tampering with Aravalli Range will be allowed: Rajasthan CM

Jaipur, Dec 26: Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma strongly criticised former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over his statements regarding the Aravalli mountain range.

He said that the Congress government did not even spare the stones and sand of the Aravalli region.

The Chief Minister questioned who changed the definition of the Aravalli range during the years 2002-03 and 2009-10, and how many mining leases were issued in the region during that period.

He accused the Congress of spreading falsehoods and made it clear that no tampering with the Aravalli mountain range would be allowed.

Sharma said that Congress leaders do nothing but spread rumours.

Referring to the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he said that Congress created unnecessary unrest and misinformation at the time, yet the government successfully implemented the law.

He added that leases were also provided to displaced people.

The Chief Minister further alleged that Congress leaders claim the Constitution will be changed and question the State Intelligence Report (SIR).

He asked whether they were supporting infiltrators and asserted that not a single infiltrator would be allowed to stay.

Launching a sharp attack on former Chief Minister Gehlot, Sharma said that he has become a “Twitter master” whose influence has faded.

“His magic will not work anymore. He will have to reap what he has sown,” he said.

On December 24, in a decisive move to curb illegal mining and strengthen ecological protection, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has directed state governments to impose a “complete ban on the grant of any new mining leases in the Aravallis”, covering the entire mountain range from Delhi to Gujarat.

The Ministry said the prohibition will apply uniformly across the entire Aravalli landscape, underscoring that the objective is to “preserve the integrity of the range as a continuous geological ridge” extending from Gujarat to the National Capital Region and to bring an end to all unregulated mining activities.

Further tightening the conservation framework, the MoEF&CC has instructed the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) to identify additional areas and zones across the entire Aravalli range where mining must be prohibited, over and above the areas already restricted by the Centre.

The identification will be carried out based on ecological, geological and landscape-level considerations, the Ministry said.

ICFRE has also been tasked with preparing a comprehensive, science-based Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM) for the entire Aravalli region.

According to the Ministry, the plan will be placed “in the public domain for wide stakeholder consultation” and will assess cumulative environmental impacts, ecological carrying capacity, conservation-critical and ecologically sensitive areas, while also outlining measures for restoration and rehabilitation.
