Dhaka [Bangladesh], Dec 25: After spending 17 years in exile, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, returns to Dhaka on Thursday, in what is expected to be a major political event in the country’s history after the ousting of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year during the July Uprising.

Rahman, accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter, Zaima Rahman, arrived from London on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, bdnews24 reported.

The flight made a stop in Sylhet before heading to Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

A massive crowd has also gathered near the airport and along the 300-foot road, where BNP leaders and activists are preparing a grand reception to welcome the party’s acting chief.

Supporters from across the country have assembled since morning, turning the area into a sea of people.

BNP party workers had made elaborate arrangements to welcome their acting chief.

Senior party leaders, including members of the Standing Committee, are expected to receive him at the airport, followed by a brief reception programme, bdnews24 reported.

To manage the crowd, airport authorities imposed a 24-hour ban on visitors at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport ahead of Rahman’s return.

According to bdnews24, officials in a statement said that the restriction will remain in force from 6:00 pm on December 24 until 6:00 pm on December 25.

During this period, entry to the airport will be permitted only for passengers holding valid tickets and passports, and all other visitors and accompanying persons will be barred from the airport premises.

Bangladesh’s interim government is also implementing the necessary measures to protect the BNP Acting Chairman.

According to Press Secretary of the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Shafiqul Alam, the government welcomed Rahman’s return to the country, adding that security preparations are being finalised in coordination with the BNP, with authorities working to accommodate all requests made by the party, bdnews24 reported.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Alam said that the government is making “every effort” to ensure adequate security.

Following his arrival, Rahman will attend a short reception organised by the party on the 300 Feet Road, also known as the 36 July Expressway, bdnews24 reported.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, convenor of the “Tarique Homecoming Committee”, said the programme on the 300 Feet Road would include a brief address by the Acting Chairman.

Following this, he will visit Evercare Hospital and later move to his residence at Gulshan Avenue in Dhaka, bdnews24 reported.

During his visit, Rahman is also scheduled to register himself as a voter on December 27, bdnews24 reported, citing Salahuddin Ahmed.

He stated that the election offices would remain open on Saturday, enabling Rahman to complete the necessary formalities, including obtaining his national identity card.

Meanwhile, nomination forms have already been collected in Bogura on behalf of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman for the parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12, bdnews24 reported.

According to BNP Bogura district unit president Rezaul Karim Badsha, Khaleda Zia’s nomination paper was collected from the Bogura-7 constituency, while Tarique Rahman’s nomination paper was obtained from the Bogura-6 constituency.

Er Rashid writes to Himachal, Uttarakhand CMs over attacks on Kashmiri shawl sellers

Srinagar, Dec 25: Awami Itihaad Party Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Thursday said that Baramulla Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid has written two detailed and strongly worded letters to the Chief Ministers of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, seeking immediate and exemplary action against those involved in the assaults and humiliation of Kashmiri shawl sellers in their respective states.

Inam Un Nabi said the letters have reached the party through the legal counsel of the jailed MP. He said Er Rashid has expressed deep anguish over television visuals showing Kashmiri shawl sellers being assaulted and humiliated by fringe elements, terming the incidents deeply disturbing and unacceptable in a democratic country.

Referring to the letter addressed to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Inam Un Nabi said Er Rashid reminded the state of its long standing reputation for tolerance and secular values, and warned that such incidents severely tarnish that image. Er Rashid questioned whether similar acts against non Kashmiris in Jammu and Kashmir would have been met with silence, stating that in Kashmir, perpetrators would have been booked under stringent laws and branded extremists. He cautioned that repeated inaction raises serious questions about claims of inclusiveness and hurts the self respect of the victims as well as the people of Jammu and Kashmir as a whole.

Speaking about the letter sent to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Inam Un Nabi said Er Rashid described the assault on a Kashmiri shawl seller from his parliamentary constituency as painful and deeply distressing. In the letter, Er Rashid asked whether being Kashmiri has effectively become a crime in the country. He reminded the Uttarakhand government that Kashmiris have historically treated tourists and outsiders with dignity and honour, and questioned why similar values were not being upheld elsewhere.

In both letters, Er Rashid demanded strict and exemplary action against the culprits to ensure that no one takes the law into their own hands in the name of ultra nationalism. He also urged the state governments to ensure the safety, dignity and livelihood of Kashmiri traders working outside Jammu and Kashmir.

Copies of the letters have also been marked to the Union Home Secretary, seeking immediate intervention to safeguard Kashmiris studying or earning their livelihood in different parts of the country. [KNT]

Christmas celebrated with decked-up churches in Kashmir; people pray for peace, prosperity

Srinagar, Dec 25: Churches across Kashmir were decked up as Christians in the valley celebrated Christmas on Thursday with religious fervour, and held special prayers for peace and prosperity for the people.

The biggest mass gathered at the Holy Family Catholic Church at Maulana Azad Road here, where the members of the Christian community held special prayers and celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ.

The priest of the Church, Father John Paul, said the devotees prayed for peace and calm in Kashmir and the country.

“We prayed for peace and calm in Kashmir, in the entire country. We prayed for the people to be able to help and support each other. We also prayed for the generation of employment opportunities for the people in Kashmir who get fewer opportunities,” he told reporters here.

Lamenting the absence of snowfall here on Christmas, Father Paul said the devotees miss the snowfall, but the weather was still good.

“We were hoping for snowfall in the city and plains. But it did not happen. We still thank God for the lovely weather,” he said.

He called upon the people to awaken their feelings of humanity, brotherhood and love.

“Today, we see the advent of Artificial Intelligence, and we are also sort of becoming artificial as we are gradually losing our humanity, brotherhood and the feeling of love,” Father Paul said.

“We hope we awaken our feelings and these good things on the occasion of Christmas,” he said.

On the incidents of harassment against the community in a few parts of the country, he said the situation will improve, and the good times will be back.

“There have been some incidents when it comes to religion in the country in the last few years, but there will be changes gradually and we pray for that better change,” he said.

On several members of the majority Muslim community participating in Christmas celebrations, he said, people from different communities have to work together for the betterment of humanity.

“We are like brothers and sisters. Our beliefs may be different, but our aim is the same, that of the betterment of the people and humanity and we all have to pursue that together,” he added.

Christmas celebrations were also held in other churches of the valley, including in Gulmarg and Baramulla.

Sulphate, ammonium, carbon, soil dust in PM 2.5 can raise depression risk: Study

Sulphate, ammonium, carbon, soil dust in PM 2.5 can raise depression risk: Study

New Delhi, Dec 25: Long-term exposure to specific particulate matter components, such as PM2.5, including sulphate, ammonium, elemental carbon, and soil dust, can increase the risk of mental health issues like depression, according to a study.

The study, published in the JAMA Network Open, found the risk to be more pronounced in older adults, particularly those with preexisting conditions such as cardiometabolic and neurologic comorbidities.

The findings, based on a study of 23,696,223 older adults, underscore the importance of targeted regulation of harmful PM2.5 components to protect vulnerable populations.

“Our results confirmed that the combined positive association of PM2.5 mixtures with depression risk was much higher than PM2.5 alone, and further revealed that soil dust, sulphate, and elemental carbon were the most responsible for the observed associations,” said researchers from Emory University, US.

The study showed that people with various comorbidities, particularly hypertension, cardiovascular diseases (such as stroke and congestive heart failure), neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia), and respiratory diseases (like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), were at a significantly higher risk of depression when exposed to total PM2.5 mass and its major components.

Sulphate, a secondary inorganic aerosol mainly from fossil fuel combustion, commonly exists as (NH4)2SO4, NH4HSO4, or sulphuric acid. It may contribute to depression by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress that affect the central nervous system.

Elemental carbon, primarily emitted from traffic and biomass burning, may exert neurotoxic effects through oxidative stress and systemic inflammation.

Elemental carbon particles from traffic sources are small (50 nm) and can easily bypass the blood-brain barrier, leading to neurotoxicity.

Soil dust, rich in silica and metals like iron and calcium, may originate from both natural and anthropogenic sources. The neurotoxicity of soil dust may be attributed to its heavy metal content because these metals can accumulate in the blood and bones, causing damage to the nervous system.

While nitrate and organic carbon showed smaller or inverse associations in the study, their associations were notably lower compared with the positive associations of soil dust, elemental carbon, and sulfate.

“Our finding suggests that comorbidities might interact synergistically with PM2.5 mass and its component exposure to further accelerate the development of depression,” the team said.
