China-Pakistan axis weighs on India’s security: US report

China-Pakistan axis weighs on India’s security: US report

Washington, Dec 26: China’s close military partnership with Pakistan is shaping India’s security environment, even as Beijing seeks to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with New Delhi, according to a new US Department of War report to Congress.

The report said China and Pakistan continue to expand defence cooperation, arms sales and military engagement. It described Pakistan as China’s most consistent and operationally significant military partner.

China’s ties with Pakistan include the transfer and co-production of weapons systems. These span air, land and naval platforms. Chinese equipment forms a major part of Pakistan’s military modernization, the report noted.

According to the assessment, Beijing uses military partnerships to advance its foreign policy goals. Arms sales, training programs and joint activities are key tools. Pakistan stands out as a long-term beneficiary of this approach.

The report said the China-Pakistan relationship has implications for India. It raises the prospect of pressure on India from both its northern and western fronts during a crisis. The document does not predict joint military action, but it points to growing alignment in strategic interests.

At the same time, the report said China has taken limited steps to stabilize its border with India. In October 2024, Indian and Chinese leaders announced disengagement from remaining standoff points along the LAC. This was followed by regular high-level talks on border management.

Despite this, the report stressed that mistrust remains deep. It said “continued mutual distrust and other irritants almost certainly limit the bilateral relationship.” Beijing, it added, may seek calmer borders to prevent closer US-India strategic ties.

The Pentagon report also noted that China’s territorial “claims” include Arunachal Pradesh. Beijing has linked such claims to its “core interests.” This places India’s border dispute with China in a sensitive category.

China’s wider military buildup adds to India’s concerns. The report said Beijing is rapidly expanding missile, cyber, space and nuclear capabilities. These developments affect the broader balance of power in Asia, including South Asia.

For Pakistan, Chinese support offers strategic depth. It also provides diplomatic backing at a difficult economic moment. For India, the partnership reinforces fears of strategic encirclement.

The report also referred to China’s interest in access and logistics facilities in the Indian Ocean region. Some of these areas are close to Pakistan’s maritime approaches. While no permanent Chinese bases are confirmed, the report said such access could support PLA operations.

This, the assessment noted, could complicate India’s maritime security planning. It would add pressure beyond the land borders.

Overall, the report described South Asia as an interconnected strategic space. China’s ties with Pakistan, its cautious engagement with India, and its expanding military power intersect in this region.

For New Delhi, the assessment underlines the need for vigilance. It said India must manage border tensions while preparing for wider regional challenges. Diplomatic engagement, the report suggested, will continue alongside security planning.

The document is part of a congressionally mandated annual review of China’s military and security developments and reflects US concerns about Beijing’s growing influence in South Asia.

J&K’s meat consumption is more modest than believed

J&K’s meat consumption is more modest than believed

Srinagar, Dec 25: Jammu and Kashmir has for long carried the reputation as a meat-heavy region, built on the legacy of cultural feasts like Wazwan feasts and a preference for mutton and poultry. Being a Muslim-majority area, Kashmir Valley is a meat-welcoming society, but meat is not eaten in the proportions as is widely believed, data reveals.

Kashmir’s participation in meat-eating is high, but the overall quantity consumed per person isn’t as “voracious” as stereotyped. It sure is elevated compared to India’s national average, but by all means moderate relative to the top Indian states. Meat consumption in Kashmir is far below global norms. The National Family Health Survey-5 and 2023-24 Household Consumption Expenditure Survey have insights and revelations.

The Percentage of Population Consuming Meat (Aged 15-49): J&K stands at 88% in J&K. Nearly 9 in 10 adults eat eggs, fish, chicken, or meat at least occasionally.

This is high but not exceptional. Northeastern states have higher percentages: Meghalaya (99%), Arunachal Pradesh (99%), and Mizoram (99%) top the list, followed by West Bengal (97%) and Kerala (96%). The northern states with stronger vegetarian traditions lag behind: Rajasthan (22%), Haryana (33%), Punjab (54%), and Gujarat (40%). India’s overall average is around 80%. By this measure, J&K aligns with the all-India average.

Households in J&K allocate about 11% of their total food budget to meat. This places it in the mid-to-high range nationally. Many other states have a higher expenditure on meat and meat products: Meghalaya (19%), Nagaland (19%), Arunachal Pradesh (19%), Goa (15%), and Telangana (13-15%).  Low-spenders include Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat. These states are essentially vegetarian. The national average is around 10%. J&K is slightly above the national average but not an outlier territory.

The recent estimates put India’s national average meat consumption at 7.1-7.4 kg per person annually. It is up from under 5 kg a decade ago, but still lower than the global average. J&K’s per capita is higher, 11-14 kg, above average, but not the highest. The top states include Telangana (21-28 kg), Haryana (24 kg), Andhra Pradesh (21 kg), Kerala (13 kg), and Assam (11 kg). J&K’s figure is driven by mutton and poultry, and is closer to mid-tier states like West Bengal (10 kg).

Only 10% of Indians eat meat daily. About 60% consume weekly, and the rest occasionally or never. In J&K, patterns are similar: high participation but not daily indulgence. According to a study, in Srinagar, 68% of households consume poultry weekly, not every day. This contrasts with assumptions of constant meat-eating, as in most homes, meals remain vegetable-based. The label “non-veg” is often understood as a heavy daily intake, but surveys show otherwise.

Economic factors play a major role; mutton costs Rs 700-750/kg, limiting purchasing. Overall, J&K imports 41% of its sheep.

BJP proud of our govt’s opportunity to tear down wall of Article 370: PM

BJP proud of our govt’s opportunity to tear down wall of Article 370: PM

Lucknow, Dec 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the BJP took pride in having the opportunity to “tear down the wall of Article 370” and slammed the Congress’ “dynastic politics”, accusing it of “one family glorification”.

Modi said this after inaugurating the Rashtra Prerna Sthal in Lucknow on the 101st birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Rashtra Prerna Sthal features 65-foot bronze statues of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya, and a lotus-shaped museum spread over 98,000 square feet, which Modi later visited.

Addressing a public gathering after the inauguration, Modi said, “The BJP is proud that our government had the opportunity to tear down the wall of Article 370,” adding that the legacy of good governance created by the BJP-led NDA government was now being taken to new heights at both the Centre and state levels.

“We must not forget how after Independence, a tendency developed to attribute every positive achievement to a single family,” he said.

The prime minister said his government had made Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya’s Antyodaya vision its mission to ensure that government schemes reached all the poor without discrimination. “Before 2014, about 25 crore people were covered under social security schemes, while today this number has increased to 95 crore,” he said.

Modi also said the day was not far off when Uttar Pradesh’s defence corridor would be known globally for defence manufacturing.

PM Modi was accompanied by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior leaders.

He was warmly welcomed by people who waved the tricolour and raised slogans in his honour.

The PM said the Rashtra Prerna Sthal symbolises the ideals that have guided India on the path of self-respect, unity and service, and called for collective efforts towards nation-building. Addressing the gathering, Modi extended Christmas greetings to people in India and across the world, saying, “This festival should bring happiness into everyone’s lives.”

He said December 25 marks the birth anniversaries of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Bharat Ratna Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya, adding that both leaders “protected India’s identity, unity and pride and left an indelible mark on nation-building”.

He also paid tributes to Maharaja Bijli Pasi on his birth anniversary. “I bow in reverence to Mahamana Malaviya ji, Atal ji and Maharaja Bijli Pasi,” the prime minister said.

The PM said the newly inaugurated Rashtra Prerna Sthal reflects the ideals guiding India on the path of self-respect, unity and service, and called for collective efforts in nation-building.

Modi also extended Christmas greetings, saying, “This festival should bring happiness into everyone’s lives.”

He noted that Vajpayee and Malaviya “protected India’s identity, unity and pride and left an indelible mark on nation-building,” and paid tributes to Maharaja Bijli Pasi.

“I bow in reverence to Mahamana Malaviya ji, Atal ji and Maharaja Bijli Pasi,” Modi said.

He added that the Rashtra Prerna Sthal reflects India’s path of self-respect, unity and service. Referring to the statues of Mookerjee, Upadhyaya and Vajpayee, he said, “Their statues may be tall but the inspiration we receive from them is even higher.”

Quoting Vajpayee, Modi said the memorial shows that “every step, every effort must be dedicated to nation-building.” He also highlighted that over 30 acres of land, earlier covered with garbage, were reclaimed in three years and congratulated Chief Minister Adityanath and his team for the efforts.

Recalling Mookerjee, Modi said he opposed “two constitutions, two flags and two prime ministers”, adding that the abrogation of Article 370 strengthened India’s unity. “Today, the Constitution of India is fully applicable in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

On Upadhyaya, Modi said his Antyodaya vision measured progress by the smile of the last person in the queue. “We have expanded Antyodaya through saturation, covering every needy person without discrimination. This is good governance, true social justice and true secularism,” he said, noting that crores have benefited from housing, utilities, food and medical schemes.

Calling December 25 “a day of good governance, Modi credited Vajpayee with laying the foundation for digital identity, telecom reforms, road connectivity and metro rail projects. He said Vajpayee would have been pleased to see India emerge as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with Uttar Pradesh becoming the top mobile manufacturing state.

Aiming at dynasty-driven politics, Modi said several national leaders were ignored or their legacies diluted. He cited the renaming of the Andaman island where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the tricolour and recalled “attempts to erase the legacy of B R Ambedkar”.

He alleged that the “Congress’ royal family” and the Samajwadi Party had done so but said the BJP ensured Ambedkar’s legacy was protected.

Modi said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who united hundreds of princely states, was also undermined after Independence, and claimed it was the BJP that restored his stature through initiatives such as the Statue of Unity and Ekta Nagar. He described dynastic politics as “driven by insecurity” and said it promoted “political untouchability, alleging that Congress and its allies treated the BJP in this manner.

He said the NDA honoured leaders across party lines, noting Bharat Ratna awards to P V Narasimha Rao and Pranab Mukherjee and national honours for Mulayam Singh Yadav and Tarun Gogoi. Modi said the NDA “corrected historical neglect” of former prime ministers through the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya. Referring to UP, Modi said the “double engine government” had transformed the state from being known for poor law and order to development, citing the Ram temple, Kashi Vishwanath Dham and Rashtra Prerna Sthal.

Banihal MLA Sajjad Shaheen reviews Sub-District Hospital functioning, sanctions funds

Banihal , Dec 25: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Banihal Sajjad Shaheen on Thursday visited the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Banihal to review the availability of medical facilities and the overall functioning of the hospital. During the visit, the MLA announced the release of funds from his own allocation for carrying out essential works aimed at strengthening hospital infrastructure.

As part of the initiative, Sajjad Shaheen sanctioned an amount of Rs 7.2 lakh for the construction of a safety tank, which is expected to improve basic facilities and ensure better services for patients.

Speaking on the occasion, the Banihal MLA strongly criticised the former MLA Banihal and former Congress chief for J&K, terming their allegations regarding shortage of doctors at the hospital as baseless and contrary to ground realities. He said that such statements were being made without verifying facts and only to remain in the public eye after being rejected by the people.

Clarifying the situation at SDH Banihal, Sajjad Shaheen stated that two specialist gynaecologists are presently posted at SDH Banihal, out of which one lady doctor is on leave, while the other, Dr Shabir, has been performing his duties diligently for the past two and a half months. During this period, around 40 surgeries have been conducted and over 200 normal deliveries successfully carried out. He further informed that a physician was appointed just a day earlier, and facilities like CT scan and dialysis services will be made available soon.

The MLA accused certain Congress leaders of indulging in irresponsible statements to malign the image of Banihal hospital unnecessarily. He emphasized that SDH Banihal is among the highest OPD load hospitals in Ramban district, which itself reflects public trust in the availability of doctors and facilities. Reiterating his commitment, Sajjad Shaheen assured that providing quality healthcare to the people of Banihal remains his top priority and all necessary steps will continue to be taken in this regard.
