Omar Abdullah rebuffs party MP Ruhullah Mehdi on reservation row

Srinagar, Dec 26: J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday rebuffed the senior National Conference (NC) leader and MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on the reservation issue in government jobs and professional colleges in J&K.

In his strongest reaction to the MP’s statements on reservation, Abdullah said: “I am not afraid of anyone’s threats, nor will I take any wrong decision under pressure. I don’t know what you think of yourself.”

The Chief Minister said matters like the reservation policy cannot be settled through intimidation or street pressure and must be addressed within the constitutional and legal framework after proper consultation with all the stakeholders.

His strong response came after Ruhullah Mehdi recently warned the government that if it fails to engage with protesting students by December 27, he would personally join their agitation.

The MP has been constantly blaming the NC’s top leadership for having failed to fulfil promises made to the people in the 2024 election manifesto that brought the party to power in J&K.

Friday’s developments have brought the relationship between Omar Abdullah, who is also the Vice President of the NC, and Ruhullah Mehdi into a face-off.

In order to increase the reservation quota for open merit candidates in J&K to 40 per cent, the state cabinet, headed by Omar Abdullah, has recommended slashing down the reservation quota under the Resident of Backward Area (RBA) by 3 per cent and that under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) society by 7 per cent.

Once approved by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, the overall reservation for various categories in government jobs and professional colleges would be 60 per cent, while the remaining 40 per cent would be available to the open merit candidates in the UT.

At present, SCs and Other Backward Classes (OBC) have 8 per cent quota each, STs 20 per cent, EWS and RBA 10 per cent, and and residents of area adjoining the actual Line of Control/International Border (ALC/IB) 4 per cent. Besides, there is a 10 per cent horizontal reservation, including six per cent to ex-servicemen and four per cent to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).

PTI announces ‘mass protest movement’ in Lahore

Islamabad, Dec 26: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday announced that it would begin a street movement by welcoming Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi in Lahore and holding a public event at the Liberty Roundabout, local media reported.

PTI Punjab chief organiser Aliya Hamza Malik said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will launch a “mass protest movement” as per the instructions given by PTI founder Imran Khan. She asked PTI’s ticket-holders, office-bearers, workers and lawyers in Lahore to be present at Liberty Roundabout to welcome Afridi, Pakistan’s leading daily Dawn reported.

Aliya Hamza Malik asked PTI members to play their part in “restoring constitution, law and democracy in the country”. She stated that it would be a “historic moment” to transform main boulevard of Lahore into a march to secure Imran Khan’s release.

Imran Khan, who has been in prison since August, 2023, is serving a 14-year jail sentence at the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi in a £190 million corruption case and faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act linked to the protests held on May 9, 2023. Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi is also serving a seven-year sentence in the same case.

Last week, Imran Khan issued a call for nationwide protest and announced his intention to challenge the court’s decision in the Toshakhana-II case in the Islamabad High Court.

His statement came after a Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison in connection with the Toshakhana -II case.

The Toshakhana-II corruption case involves the purchase of an expensive jewellery set, gifted to Imran Khand by the Saudi Crown Prince during an official visit in May 2021, at a nominal price.

The verdict was pronounced by Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s special court during proceedings conducted at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, where Imran Khan is imprisoned.

Under the ruling, Imran Khan was sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison, receiving 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, and seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

‘Chose peace over rigidity’, says PDP’s Waheed Para after Mirwaiz removes APHC designation from X

Srinagar, Dec 26: Peoples Democratic party (PDP) leader AND MLA Pulwama, Waheed Para on Friday said that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq removed the APHC tag as an act of peace and the act must not be “weaponized” against him. Para implied that by removing his designation as ‘Chairman All Parties Hurriyat Conference’ from his verified X profile, Mirwaiz chose peace over rigidity.

Providing an anecdote from Islamic history, MLA Pulwama said “in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the Prophet ﷺ agreed to erase the words “Muhammad-ur-Rasoolullah”—the very foundation of the Kalima—solely in the interest of peace.” Adding that “History remembers this not as compromise, but as wisdom, foresight, and moral courage”.

He said that those who are attacking and trolling him for this decision are deliberately trying to undermine him, making his path harder despite the extraordinary challenges he has endured and the supreme sacrifice of his father.

In a post on X, Waheed Para wrote, “In the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the Prophet ﷺ agreed to erase the words “Muhammad-ur-Rasoolullah”—the very foundation of the Kalima—solely in the interest of peace. History remembers this not as compromise, but as wisdom, foresight, and moral courage.”

He added, “If Mirwaiz Kashmir has removed the APHC tag as an act of peace, it must never be weaponized against him. Choosing peace over rigidity is not weakness; it is leadership.”

“Mirwaiz has acted within the framework of law and circumstances. Those attacking and trolling him for this decision are deliberately trying to undermine him, making his path harder despite the extraordinary challenges he has endured and the supreme sacrifice of his father. Such attacks do not serve justice or peace, they only deepen division.” He concluded the post.

Assault on Kashmiri Shawl Sellers won’t be tolerated at any cost: MHA

Assault on Kashmiri Shawl Sellers won’t be tolerated at any cost: MHA

Srinagar, Dec 26, KDC: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken a strong note of an assault on a Kashmiri seasonal Shawl Seller in Uttarakhand, making it unequivocally clear that such acts against Kashmiri shawl sellers will not be tolerated at any cost.

A top official from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that “MHA has taken strong note of the incident and has made it clear that such acts against Kashmiri shawl sellers will not be tolerated at any cost.” Kashmiri traders are equal Indian citizens, constitutionally entitled to work anywhere in India, he said.

According to officials, on the afternoon of Monday, December 22, 2025, Bilal Ahmad Ganie (28), a shawl seller from Kupwara, Kashmir, was intercepted in the Kashipur area of Udham Singh Nagar district while conducting door-to-door sales to support his family during the harsh winter months.

Bilal, a seasonal shawl seller in Uttarakhand for over eight years, has been working in the state for more than eight winters, carrying out business for over eight years, and was known locally as a peaceful and non-disruptive trading presence.

Police said the primary accused, Ankur Singh, a local Bajrang Dal leader, allegedly led a group of five men who hounded and assaulted Bilal, subjecting him to physical violence, verbal abuse, death threats, and intimidation. During the attack, the victim was forcibly coerced into chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” and was also pressured into raising “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” slogans while being assaulted, they said.

The case initially faced informal settlement pressure, with an attempted compromise through a “mafinama” (apology letter) at Goshala Police Chowki, causing a delay in formal registration. However, after a viral video of the assault sparked public outrage and condemnation, the matter escalated to New Delhi, following which the MHA issued a strong directive to the Uttarakhand administration to ensure strict rule of law enforcement, said an official.

The intervention acted as a decisive catalyst, prompting the Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP), Deepam Seth, and the Governor to place the case on top priority, triggering a full-scale crackdown on the accused and involved elements.

Following the MHA’s directive and public condemnation, law enforcement agencies launched a rapid, coordinated operation, resulting in the arrest of three accused persons so far, with further raids and detentions expected as the probe widens, the official said.

He said that an FIR No. 517/2025 has been registered under Sections 191(2), 115(2), 351(3), 352, 304, 62, 292, and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The sections invoked include charges related to criminal intimidation, hurt, assault, threat to life, coercion, and abusive/objectionable acts, reflecting the seriousness of the offence.

Officials said that no pressure or settlement attempt will derail the prosecution, and that the investigation will proceed strictly on merit to determine the full sequence of events, additional accused, and liability under law.

A senior police official said the case will be investigated in a mission-mode, adding that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure that justice is delivered transparently and expeditiously. (KDC)

Govt’s reform trajectory will continue with even more vigour in coming times: PM Modi

New Delhi, Dec 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the government’s reform trajectory will continue with even more vigour in the coming times as it is committed to boosting ‘Ease of Living’.

The prime minister made this observation on a series of posts by the central government on its various reform initiatives.

“Ours is a Government committed to boosting ‘Ease of Living’ and this thread below gives examples of how we have worked in that direction. Our reform trajectory will continue with even more vigour in the coming times,” Modi said.

With the hashtags #ReformInAction & #GoodGovernance, the central government said in the posts that the real test of reform is whether it reduces stress for people and 2025 marked a clear shift in governance, with reforms focused on outcomes, not complexity.

Simpler tax laws, faster dispute resolution, modern labour codes, and decriminalised compliance reduced friction for citizens and businesses alike. The emphasis was on trust, predictability, and long-term growth, showing how well-designed policy can quietly improve everyday life, the posts by MyGovIndia said.

For millions of Indians, tax relief became real. Incomes up to Rs 12 lakh attract zero tax. Middle-class families now retain more of what they earn, giving them flexibility to spend, save and invest with greater confidence, it stated.

It said the Income Tax Act, 2025 streamlined compliance and brought clarity, transparency, and fairness to the direct tax system, making it more taxpayer friendly and aligned with today’s needs.

Small businesses can now grow without fear of losing benefits. Higher investment and turnover limits allow MSMEs to expand while retaining access to loans and tax incentives. This encourages scaling up, hiring more workers, and building stronger local enterprises

Rural employment now creates assets, not just wages. With extended guaranteed employment and a focus on village infrastructure, rural labour is now building permanent assets that strengthen communities and livelihoods, it said.

It observed that workers no longer need to navigate dozens of laws as 29 labour laws were simplified into four clear codes covering wages, safety, social security, and relations.

Rights are clearer, compliance is easier, and women benefit from assured maternity and workplace protections, it stated.

The government also stated that GST has been made simpler for businesses and consumers alike.

With streamlined tax slabs, easier registration, automated processes, and faster refunds, the next generation of GST reforms is improving ease of doing business. The impact is clear in record Diwali sales of Rs 6.05 trillion and the strongest Navratri shopping in over a decade, it said.

It also said that businesses can now bring products to market faster.

With rationalised Quality Control Orders, Indian manufacturers face lower compliance costs, improved efficiency, and greater strength in global markets. More room to grow for Indian businesses, the government said in the posts.

The expanded definition of small companies reduced compliance burden and costs, allowing enterprises with turnovers up to Rs 100 crore to focus on innovation and expansion, it added.

Decision to import apples from New Zealand could harm Kashmiri growers: NC

Srinagar, Dec 25: The ruling National Conference on Thursday appealed to the Centre to review its decision to import apples under the new trade agreement with New Zealand, warning that such a move could seriously harm the Kashmiri apple industry.

In a statement, National Conference state spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said the import of foreign apples in the past had adversely affected local growers and traders.

He demanded that no tax exemption be given to imported apples under the new agreement and that a reasonable tax must be imposed to safeguard the interests of Kashmiri apple growers.

“Kashmiri apples are not only superior in taste but are also highly beneficial for health. No foreign apple can compete with the quality of Kashmiri produce,” he said.

Dar highlighted that a large section of Kashmir’s population is directly or indirectly dependent on the apple industry, which has already suffered losses of around Rs 2,000 crore this year due to adverse weather conditions, road closures, and floods.

He urged the Centre to refrain from taking any decision that could further damage the fragile apple economy of Jammu and Kashmir.
