Searches underway after terrorists take food from house in J-K’s Udhampur

Jammu, Dec 21: Security forces launched a search operation at a village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district after terrorists reportedly took food from a house before escaping into the nearby forest area, officials said on Sunday.

The joint search operation by police and paramilitary forces was underway at Chore Motu and its adjoining forest villages in the Majalta area, some 5 km west of the site of an earlier encounter that left a policeman dead, the officials said.

They said an intelligence input was received late Saturday that two unidentified terrorists visited the house of Mangtu Ram at Chore Motu village at around 6.30 pm and took food.

Police and paramilitary forces were immediately mobilised, but the terrorists could not be found, they said.

The forest belt near the village was cordoned off, and a combing operation was launched simultaneously from different sides with the first light of the day on Sunday to track down and neutralise the terrorists, the officials said.

On December 15, a policeman was killed in an encounter with terrorists at Soan village in the Majalta area after security forces received information about the movement of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists in the area.

The terrorists managed to escape, taking advantage of thick foliage and darkness, the officials said.

Imran Khan calls for nationwide protests after 17-year jail sentence

Imran Khan calls for nationwide protests after 17-year jail sentence

Islamabad, Dec 21: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan urged his supporters to gear up for countrywide protests following a 17-year jail term handed to him and wife Bushra Bibi in a corruption case.

Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 17 years in jail each by a court on Saturday in the Toshakhana 2 corruption case.

Khan, 73, who has been in jail since August 2023, faces multiple cases launched against him since his ouster from power in April 2022. The Toshakhana 2 case involves alleged fraud in state gifts that the former first couple received from the Saudi government in 2021.

In a conversation with his lawyers in Adiala Jail after the “military-style trial decision” Khan urged his supporters to stand up in protest after the decision, according to a midnight statement posted on Khan’s X account.

It was not known who posted his conversation on his personal account as Khan has no access to his social media handles in jail.

“I have sent a message to (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister) Sohail Afridi to prepare for the street movement. The entire nation will have to rise for its rights,” he said, and added: “Struggle is worship, and I am even ready to embrace martyrdom for the true freedom of Pakistan!”

He argued that the latest sentence did not come as a surprise and asked his legal team to move the high court against the decision.

“Like the baseless decisions and sentences of the last three years, the Toshakhana-II decision is also nothing new to me. This decision was given in haste by the judge without any evidence and without fulfilling the legal requirements,” he said, adding that his legal team was “not even heard”.

He also said that it was inevitable for the Insaf Lawyers Forum, a group of lawyers to his Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, and the legal community to come forward for justice.

“For the struggle to establish the supremacy of law and restore the Constitution, it is essential for the Justice Lawyers Forum and the lawyers’ front to come to the forefront. Only the system of justice can protect the people. Without it, neither economic progress nor moral development is possible,” he said.

He also targeted the army’s leadership for his detention, but in the same vein said that the “army is mine”, showing his effort to win its support while attacking the top leadership of the armed forces.

Khan also alleged that he and wife were being “continuously subjected to mental torture by keeping us in solitary confinement”.

“There is a ban on our books, TV, and meetings. Every prisoner in jail can watch TV, but even watching TV has been banned for me and Bibi Bushra,” he alleged.

Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 in case launched after he was removed from office though a no-trust vote in April 2022.

The Toshakhana is a department under the Cabinet Division that stores gifts given to rulers and government officials by heads of other governments and foreign dignitaries. Once deposited, the gifts can be bought back following proper rules and procedures.

In October 2024, Bushra was granted bail by the Islamabad High Court in this case, and a month later, Khan was also granted bail in the same case. They were indicted in December last year.

Natural disaster blamed for landslide deaths as J-K court quashes plea against Vaishno Devi board

Natural disaster blamed for landslide deaths as J-K court quashes plea against Vaishno Devi board

Jammu, Dec 21: A court in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra has dismissed a plea seeking registration of an FIR against Vaishno Devi shrine board officials for the death of 35 pilgrims in a landslide on the tracks to the shrine on August 26, holding that a natural disaster caused it.

It, however, said the ruling will not have any bearing on the inquiry ordered into the tragedy by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha three days after the incident.

The plea alleged that despite weather advisories issued by the meteorological centre in Srinagar and the J-K Disaster Management Authority, the pilgrimage was not suspended, which amounted to criminal negligence by the CEO and other officials of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

Sub-Judge (Judicial Magistrate, First Class) Katra Sidhant Vaid dismissed the plea, which sought directions to the police to register an FIR under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 106 (causing death by rash or negligent acts) of the BNS.

“From the perusal of the allegations levelled in the complaint, statements recorded by the police and the police report, it is very much clear that the proximate and immediate cause of the unfortunate incident was a natural disaster.

“Even if what has been pleaded in the complaint is presumed to be true, then also non-compliance of the advisories issued by the meteorological department could be a lapse on the administrative side and no element of criminal negligence is present,” the judge said.

“In my considered opinion, the case of criminal negligence is not made out, and no cognisable offence is prima facie made out,” he said.

Referring to police reports and witness statements, the court said the pilgrimage was halted from time to time whenever required in the interest of public safety and standard operating procedures were followed.

Witnesses said it rained for two to three days prior to the August 26 incident, and the Yatra had been intermittently stopped on August 24 and 25 due to the heavy downpour.

The court held that for criminal liability under Section 106 of the BNS, there must be proof of a grossly negligent or rash act, foreseeability of harm and a direct causal link between the act or omission and the death. “Mere error of judgment or an administrative lapse does not suffice for criminal liability,” it said.

The court ruled out the offence of culpable homicide, noting that intention and negligence represent different states of mind and the complaint itself alleged negligence rather than intent.

Chilla-e-Kalan commences with rain and snow in Kashmir

Chilla-e-Kalan commences with rain and snow in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 21: The harshest 40-day winter phase of Kashmir, known as Chilla-e-Kalan, commenced on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, ushering in a significant shift in weather conditions across the Valley.

The beginning of Chilla-e-Kalan coincided with widespread rain and snowfall, effectively ending the prolonged dry spell that had triggered dense fog, smog, and poor air quality in several parts of Kashmir.

While higher reaches received fresh snowfall, the plains experienced intermittent rainfall, bringing visible improvement in atmospheric conditions.

Officials said, the fresh precipitation helped disperse accumulated pollutants, leading to better visibility and improved air quality, especially in urban centres that had been grappling with low AQI levels over the past week.

Weatherman has forecast more rain and snowfall over the next 48 hours, with moderate snowfall expected at higher altitudes and continued cold conditions across the region. Authorities have advised people to exercise caution while travelling, particularly in snow-bound and mountainous areas, as temperatures are expected to dip further during this period.

Chilla-e-Kalan, the coldest phase of Kashmir’s winter, lasts for 40 days and is followed by the relatively milder Chilla-e-Khurd and Chilla-e-Bachha phases.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities informed that vehicular movement on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) is continuing from both sides despite inclement weather. However, the Mughal Road, Sinthan Pass and Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) road remain closed due to snow accumulation. Commuters have been advised not to rely on rumours and to check official traffic updates through the Traffic Police social media handles and Traffic Control Units.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng told JKNS that light snowfall is currently being reported in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, with around 1 to 2 inches of fresh snow recorded at Gulmarg and Sonamarg, while Sadhna Top has received nearly 6 inches. The plains continue to witness light, intermittent rain.

He said weather activity is likely to intensify as the day progresses, with rain dominating the plains and a moderate spell of snowfall expected in higher reaches. “If moderate rainfall continues into late afternoon or evening, temperatures may fall enough to trigger snowfall at a few places even in the plains,” he added.

The fresh spell of precipitation has brought much-needed relief to the region, which had been witnessing unusually dry and polluted weather conditions at the onset of winter, he said. (JKNS)

FSSAI scrambles cancer rumours, declares eggs safe

FSSAI scrambles cancer rumours, declares eggs safe

Srinagar, Dec 20: A social media storm tried to scramble breakfast landing eggs in hot water until facts cooled the panic.

India’s food regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on Saturday said cancer claims around eggs had no scientific basis and urged people to ignore viral panic and keep eggs on their plates.

The FSSAI cleared eggs of all suspicions regarding their carcinogenicity, declaring them “scientifically unsupported”.

It said eggs remain a safe and essential part of a healthy diet. The official statement released today by the regulatory body advised people to dismiss alarmist rumours and continue incorporating eggs into their meals.

The controversy erupted earlier this month with social media posts and unverified videos alleging traces of antibiotic residues and metabolites, including nitrofuran, in eggs. The reports said, this could lead to cancer.

A prominent brand, Eggoz, was accused of using banned substances in its poultry birds that led to “dangerous residues in eggs”.

FSSAI’s response comes just over a week after the controversy and states that nitrofurans are strictly prohibited at all stages of production in poultry and eggs under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011.

“These claims are misleading and lack any scientific basis,” FSSAI said. “Eggs sold in India comply with stringent safety standards, and there is no evidence from national or international health bodies linking moderate egg consumption to increased cancer risk.”

FSSAI’s Egg Safety Drive has been initiated to enhance testing protocols and ensure compliance with food standards.

This involves random sampling from farms, markets, and processing units across states.

In J&K, the Food Safety Department has also taken samples from various outlets and the supply chain and sent them for testing to labs.

The reports are yet to come.

The drive includes checks for banned antibiotics, pesticides, and other contaminants.

In addition, proper cooking of eggs through boiling, frying, or scrambling to at least 74 degrees Celsius eliminates any potential bacterial risks like Salmonella.

Back home, in Kashmir, experts swear by the nutritional value of eggs.

Dr Saima Hakim, a nutritionist, said, “People, children, the elderly, and everyone else must consume eggs as they are a great source of high-quality protein and other essential nutrients.”

She said eggs are an affordable source of protein, and a single medium egg provides approximately 6.4 gm of complete protein.

It contains all nine essential amino acids needed for muscle repair, immune function, and growth.

Dr Saima said eggs are also rich in vitamins such as B12 for nerve health, D for bone strength, and A for vision.

“Eggs also contain minerals like selenium, phosphorus, and iron,” she said. “Rare nutrients like choline, which supports brain development and liver function, and lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that protect eye health, are also found in eggs.”

SC Bar Association issues condemnation letter against Bihar CM, 2 ministers

New Delhi, Dec 20: The Supreme Court Bar Association on Saturday issued a letter expressing its “strongest condemnation” of the recent incident where Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pulled down the naqab of a woman doctor during a public ceremony in Patna.

The letter said it was shocking that a person holding such a high office should attempt to demean the dignity and autonomy of the woman by trying to pull down her headscarf.

The incident, a video clip of which has been circulated widely and sparked a major political row, took place on December 15 at the chief minister’s secretariat in Patna when Ayush doctors had gathered to receive their letters of appointment. When the woman came up for her letter, Kumar saw her naqab, said “what is this?”, and then removed the veil.
