Leaders like Giriraj Singh want to turn India into Kaurav Rajya: Mehbooba Mufti

Leaders like Giriraj Singh want to turn India into Kaurav Rajya: Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar, Dec 19: People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said BJP leaders like Union minister Giriraj Singh want to make India a ‘Kaurav Rajya’ where women are disrespected.

“India is a secular country. It is the country of (Mahatma) Gandhi, who laid down his life for secularism. But leaders like Giriraj Singh want to turn it into ‘Kaurav Rajya’. I am not saying ‘Ram Rajya’, in which the Kauravs stripped Draupadi’s clothes,” Mufti told reporters here.

After Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday triggered a row by pulling the veil off the face of a woman during an event to distribute appointment letters to Ayush doctors in Patna, Giriraj Singh on Thursday defended Kumar and said it is up to the woman to refuse the appointments or “go to hell”.

Linking Singh’s mentality to that of the Kauravs, Mufti said, “There is no respect for women. Draupadi was not a Muslim and was not veiled, yet her clothes were stripped off in public, with Kauravs like Giriraj applauding and laughing. They continue to do the same, so it should not surprise us. I have no expectations from BJP leaders.”

Referring to Nitish Kumar, the PDP chief said he should not have done what he did.

“I am happy that Iltija (Mufti) has lodged a complaint (against Kumar) today,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Mufti’s daughter and PDP leader Iltija lodged a police complaint seeking the registration of an FIR against the Bihar chief minister.

“I’m writing to bring to your attention a vile incident which has caused immense distress and hurt among Muslims, especially women. A few days ago, we watched with shock, horror and worry as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pulled down the ‘naqab’ of a young Muslim doctor in full public glare at a government function,” Mufti said in her complaint to the Kothibagh SHO.

However, there was no word from the police on whether an FIR has been registered against the JD-U chief.

30 journalists rescued after protesters torch newspaper offices in Bangladesh

New Delhi, Dec 19: At least thirty Bangladeshi journalists were rescued as protesters vandalised and set several newspaper offices’ on fire including a Bengali-language daily newspaper, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star following the death of Bangladesh’s youth leader, Sharif Osman Hadi, according to an NDTV report.

Protest broke out in Bangladesh after a masked unidentified gunman killed Sharif Osman Hadi’s. Hundreds of Hadi’s supporters gathered in a square in the capital city to protest with some vandalising the offices of the Bangladeshi newspapers ‘Prothom Alo’ and ‘The Daily Star’.

As per the NDTV report, it began with an attack on the Bengali-language daily newspaper Prothom Alo, where the crowd had gone chanting slogans before setting the building on fire around midnight.

“Several hundred demonstrators reached the Prothom Alo office around 11 pm and later surrounded the building,” NDTV quoted a witness, adding that the protesters then set The Daily Star office on fire following the vandalism of a Prothom Alo building.

A phone call from outside warned staff that a crowd was moving towards The Daily Star premises, a journalist told bdnews24. The newsroom staff tried to move downstairs, but the mob had begun vandalising the ground and first floors of the office building before setting it on fire.

“I can’t breathe anymore,” Zyma Islam, The Daily Star reporter posted on Facebook. “There’s too much smoke. I’m inside. You are killing me,” she added.

The night shift staff reportedly moved to the terrace to save their lives. At least 25 journalists of The Daily Star were rescued over four hours after the mob attack on the office building in Dhaka’s Kawran Bazar, reported bdnews24.

The fire was brought under control at around 2 am but it took a couple of more hours to bring the journalists out of the building as the crowd charged towards the building.

“All The Daily Star staff have just been successfully evacuated to a safe place, thanks to the Bangladesh Army and the Fire Service,” Mahmud Hasan, a staff wrote on social media and thanked army for the resuce operation. “Special thanks to an army major whose valor today matched that of “Major Rana,” the iconic fictional hero from Masud Rana series created by Kazi Anwar Hossain, for leading the evacuation operation,” he added.

The Army has been deployed in front of The Daily Star building, bdnews24 reported.

Editors’ Council President and New Age Editor Nurul Kabir was heckled. Videos from the ground show a violent mob pulling Kabir’s hair and thrashing him.

It is unclear why both newspapers, known for their passive support for Yunus and his interim government, came under attack.

Iltija Mufti files complaint seeking FIR against Nitish Kumar for pulling down Muslim doctor’s veil

Iltija Mufti files complaint seeking FIR against Nitish Kumar for pulling down Muslim doctor’s veil

Srinagar, Dec 19: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has filed a formal complaint seeking the registration of an FIR against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over an incident in which he allegedly pulled aside the face veil of a Muslim woman doctor during a government function.

In the complaint, Iltija Mufti described the act as a serious violation of personal dignity, bodily autonomy and religious freedom, arguing that the incident amounts to an offence under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Constitution. She said the act, carried out at a public event, was not only humiliating for the woman concerned but also sent a “deeply disturbing message” about respect for women and minorities in positions of power.

The complaint states that the doctor, identified as an AYUSH practitioner receiving an appointment letter, appeared visibly taken aback during the incident, while the chief minister proceeded without consent. Iltija Mufti asserted that such behaviour by a constitutional authority cannot be normalised or dismissed as inadvertent, particularly when it involves interference with personal attire rooted in faith and choice

Calling the incident an abuse of authority, the PDP leader urged law-enforcement agencies to act without prejudice and uphold the rule of law. She stressed that accountability must apply equally to all individuals, irrespective of their political position.

The episode, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has sparked nationwide outrage and drawn condemnation from opposition parties and civil society groups. While several leaders have criticised Nitish Kumar’s conduct, neither the Bihar Chief Minister nor his party has issued an official response so far.
