US military launches strikes in Syria against Islamic State fighters after American deaths

US military launches strikes in Syria against Islamic State fighters after American deaths

Washington, Dec 20: The Trump administration launched military strikes Friday in Syria to “eliminate” Islamic State group fighters and weapons sites in retaliation for an ambush attack that killed two US troops and an American interpreter almost a week ago.

A US official described it as “a large-scale” strike that hit 70 targets in areas across central Syria that had IS infrastructure and weapons. Another US official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive operations, said more strikes should be expected.

The attack was conducted using F-15 Eagle jets, A-10 Thunderbolt ground attack aircraft and AH-64 Apache helicopters, the officials said. F-16 fighter jets from Jordan and HIMARS rocket artillery also were used, one official said.

“This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance. The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people,” Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on social media.

President Donald Trump had pledged “very serious retaliation” after the shooting in the Syrian desert, for which he blamed IS. The troops were among hundreds of US troops deployed in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting the terrorist group.

Trump in a social media post said the strikes were targeting IS “strongholds.” He reiterated his support for Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, who he said was “fully in support” of the US effort to target the militant group.

Trump also offered an all-caps threat, warning the group against attacking US personnel again.

“All terrorists who are evil enough to attack Americans are hereby warned — YOU WILL BE HIT HARDER THAN YOU HAVE EVER BEEN HIT BEFORE IF YOU, IN ANY WAY, ATTACK OR THREATEN THE USA.,” the president added.

The attack was a major test for the warming ties between the United States and Syria since the ouster of autocratic leader Bashar Assad a year ago. Trump has stressed that Syria was fighting alongside US troops and said al-Sharaa was “extremely angry and disturbed by this attack,” which came as the US military is expanding its cooperation with Syrian security forces.

Syria’s foreign ministry in a statement on X following the launch of US strikes said that last week’s attack “underscores the urgent necessity of strengthening international cooperation to combat terrorism in all its forms” and that Syria is committed “to fighting ISIS and ensuring that it has no safe havens on Syrian territory and will continue to intensify military operations against it wherever it poses a threat.”

IS has not claimed responsibility for the attack on the US service members, but the group has claimed responsibility for two attacks on Syrian security forces since, one of which killed four Syrian soldiers in Idlib province. The group in its statements described al-Sharaa’s government and army as “apostates.” While al-Sharaa once led a group affiliated with al-Qaida, he has had a long-running enmity with IS.

Syrian state television reported that the US strikes hit targets in rural areas of Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa provinces and in the Jabal al-Amour area near Palmyra. It said they targeted “weapons storage sites and headquarters used by ISIS as launching points for its operations in the region.”

Trump this week met privately with the families of the slain Americans at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware before he joined top military officials and other dignitaries on the tarmac for the dignified transfer, a solemn and largely silent ritual honouring U.S. service members killed in action.

The guardsmen killed in Syria last Saturday were Sgt Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, according to the US Army. Ayad Mansoor Sakat, of Macomb, Michigan, a US civilian working as an interpreter, was also killed.

The shooting nearly a week ago near the historic city of Palmyra also wounded three other US troops as well as members of Syria’s security forces, and the gunman was killed. The assailant had joined Syria’s internal security forces as a base security guard two months ago and recently was reassigned because of suspicions that he might be affiliated with IS, Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba has said.

The man stormed a meeting between US and Syrian security officials who were having lunch together and opened fire after clashing with Syrian guards.

When asked for further information, the Pentagon referred AP to Hegseth’s social media post.

Anti-encroachment drive continues on NH between Udhampur, Qazigund

Banihal, Dec 19: The demolition drive launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) against encroachments along the Srinagar Jammu National Highway (NH-44) between Udhampur and Qazigund continued for the second consecutive day on Friday.

During the operation, dozens of unauthorized structures were removed from Jekhani in Udhampur to Halar in Qazigund.

The drive was carried out under the supervision of senior officials of the National Highways Authority of India, along with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Banihal, SDPO Banihal, and officials of the Qazigund–Banihal Expressway. A heavy deployment of police personnel was also made to maintain law and order during the demolition operation.

According to official sources, the demolition is part of a sustained campaign against illegal occupations on national highway land.

The action follows an inspection conducted by NHAI’s authorized officer also Project Director NH 44, Shubham Yadav, during which over 80 illegal structures and encroachments were identified at various locations along the highway.

Meanwhile, the demolition drive triggered resistance from several residents of Banihal, who alleged that many affected individuals were not served prior notices by the NHAI.

They have claimed that shops and residential structures constructed on their private land along the four-lane highway have had their access cut off, causing them heavy financial losses.

The locals further alleged that protective walls were not constructed to safeguard several private buildings located near the Banihal Railway Station on NH 44, exposing properties worth crores of rupees to potential damage.

They also expressed concern that rainwater flowing from the highway during wet weather was damaging their structures.

When contacted, NHAI Project Director Ramban, Shubham Yadav, told Greater Kashmir that the demolition drive was being carried out in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court of India.

He said the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued clear instructions to remove encroachments from national highways, and field teams including NHAI, administration and Police were strictly implementing these orders to ensure highway safety and smooth traffic movement.

The Project Director added that so far, more than 80 illegal structures and encroachments were removed from nearly a 100-kilometre stretch of NH-44 between Udhampur, Banihal and up to Hillar in Qazigund, while the remaining unauthorized structures were also being cleared. He asserted that the drive would continue in the coming days and that no one would be allowed to encroach upon the land of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway.

LIC welcomes Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha Bill

New Delhi, Dec 19: The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has welcomed the passage of the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Bill, 2025, describing it as a major step towards deepening insurance penetration and strengthening policyholder protection across the country.

A statement said that the legislation amends the Insurance Act, 1938, the LIC Act, 1956 and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 1999, with the aim of creating a modern and inclusive regulatory framework aligned with the national vision of “Insurance for All by 2047”.

Welcoming the Bill in Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underlined the need to expand insurance awareness and coverage, saying greater awareness would help citizens protect themselves against risks and ensure timely settlement of rightful claims.

A key feature of the Bill is the establishment of a Policyholders’ Education and Protection Fund, to be financed through penalties imposed by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). The fund will be used to promote policyholder education, awareness and consumer protection.

The enhanced role envisaged for IRDAI, including mandatory public consultations and standard operating procedures for regulation-making, is aimed at ensuring transparency, consistency and robust regulatory oversight.

LIC said the reforms reaffirm its mandate as a trusted national institution and will help it further expand coverage across geographies and income segments. The changes come soon after the full GST waiver on individual life insurance policies, providing additional relief to policyholders.

The Bill is expected to play a key role in building a secure, inclusive and resilient insurance ecosystem as India moves towards its 2047 development goals.
