Div Com Kashmir urges fire safety at Pheran Day Jashn-e-Chillai Kalan

Srinagar, Dec 20: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg on Saturday said that Kashmiri artisans deserve immense appreciation for preserving the region’s centuries-old craft traditions while creatively blending them with modern aesthetics.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Pheran Day – Jashn-e-Chillai Kalan celebrations held at Kashmir Haat, Srinagar, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Div Com said the event also marked the 40th anniversary of Kashmiri Artisans’ Day, a milestone that highlights the continuing vibrancy of the Valley’s traditional craftsmanship.

“The traditional attire of Kashmir and our handicrafts are a reflection of our warmth and aesthetics. All the artisans who are with us today deserve a lot of credit for keeping this legacy alive while adapting to changing times,” the divisional commissioner Garg said.

He congratulated the Department of Handicrafts and Handlooms for organising regular initiatives to promote local artisans, including three-day festivals, New Year artisan events, and new marketing platforms. “The department has been proactive in giving artisans exposure and opportunities, especially ahead of the winter and tourist seasons,” he said, adding that the administration is working on the “local for local” concept to strengthen Kashmir’s craft economy.

Inviting visitors to witness the two-day exhibition at Kashmir Haat, he said such events not only celebrate Kashmir’s heritage but also help artisans connect directly with buyers and tourists.

The Divisional Commissioner also extended greetings for the upcoming festival season and briefed on the administration’s winter preparedness, noting that the ‘Integrated Command and Control Centre’ and district-level control rooms are working round the clock. “All DCs have established control rooms in their districts and nodal officers are deployed to ensure uninterrupted power supply, snow clearance, and essential services,” he said.

Garg also issued a fire safety advisory, urging residents to remain cautious during winters. “We have seen many fire incidents in recent weeks. People should audit their winter appliances and ensure electric devices are turned off when not in use to avoid unfortunate incidents,” he said.

Anti-terror ops intensified along IB over inputs on possible infiltration in Jammu

Jammu, Dec 20: Security forces have intensified anti-terror operations across the Jammu region following intelligence inputs about a possible infiltration attempt by terrorists from across the border amid dense fog, officials said on Saturday.

Search operations by police, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Army personnel are underway at various locations near the International Border (IB) in Kathua, Samba, Jammu and Rajouri districts, besides the Chatroo forest belt in Kishtwar, they said.

According to intelligence inputs, movement of suspected terrorists has been reported at launch pads along the border opposite Hiranagar, Ghagwal, Ramgarh and Akhnoor areas in the Kathua-Samba-Jammu sector over the past two days, officials said.

To counter a possible infiltration attempt, search and cordon operations are on in Bobiya border outpost, Tappan, Mareed, Paharpur, Pansar, Maniyari, Tarnah Nallah, Bein Nallah, Kishanpur Kandi, Chak Chabbey, Dolka Samyal, and Rukh-e-Sarkar areas in Kathua district.

Besides, security forces are conducting search operations at Babar Nallah, Paloora, Treyal, Mansar, and Chilla Danga in Samba, and Pragwal and adjoining areas in Akhnoor sector, they added.

According to officials, the searches are also part of area domination in view of the prevailing harsh weather conditions accompanied by dense fog cover.

Security forces have also intensified search operations in Rajouri district to thwart any infiltration bid by terrorists, officials said, adding that four grenades were recovered during one of the combing operations on Friday.

In Kishtwar district, security forces conducted searches in over a dozen forest villages for the second day on Saturday after locals reported movement of suspected terrorists.

However, there has been no contact with any suspects so far, they said, adding that the anti-terror operation was ongoing when last reports were received.

NGT petition flags threat to Dachigam Wildlife Corridor from proposed camp

NGT petition flags threat to Dachigam Wildlife Corridor from proposed camp

Srinagar, Dec 20: Locals from Brain Nishat in Srinagar outskirts have filed an application before the National Green Tribunal alleging that the authorities have begun clearing land and marking trees for the proposed establishment of a Battalion Camping Site for several CRPF battalions inside an ecologically fragile area adjoining Dachigam National Park.

The plea states that around 1324 kanals of land identified for the project fall within the Brain Nishat Conservation Reserve, a notified protected zone under the Wildlife Protection Act. The land also forms part of the catchment of Dal Lake and is categorised as a Green Belt under the Srinagar Master Plan 2035, where construction activity is prohibited.

According to the applicants, thousands of green standing trees, including protected walnut and willow species, face the risk of felling despite restrictions under the Jammu and Kashmir Preservation of Specified Trees Act, 1969. They claim that on-ground demarcation work has already begun and that these actions violate environmental safeguards and the Public Trust Doctrine affirmed by the Supreme Court.

The petition as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust, highlights that the reserve acts as an important wildlife corridor for critically endangered Hangul, Asiatic Black Bear, Himalayan Grey Langur and Leopard. It further alleges that no seismic, ecological or carbon footprint assessment has been carried out before the initiation of work in the highly sensitive Zabarwan foothills.

The locals maintain that they are not opposed to the establishment of security infrastructure but insist that such facilities should be set up at locations that do not threaten fragile ecosystems. [KNT]

PM Modi’s chopper unable to land at Taherpur due to low visibility, to address rally virtually

Kolkata, Dec 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chopper was unable to land at the helipad at Taherpur, where he was slated to address a rally, in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Saturday due to low visibility.

After reaching the area, the chopper pilot found the situation not suitable for landing at the helipad because of the low visibility and decided to fly back to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

The Prime Minister’s chopper had returned to Kolkata and landed at the airport. While state BJP leaders had hinted at the possibility that he might reach Taherpur by road and attend his twin programmes there, one administrative and the other political, the distance – over 100 kms – did not make it feasible, and PM Modi is scheduled to address the rally virtually from Kolkata.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, confirmed that the chopper could not land at Taherpur.

For the Prime Minister’s two programmes, two separate platforms were raised.

From one dais, the Prime Minister was supposed to first inaugurate some Central government projects in West Bengal virtually. Thereafter, he was supposed to go to the second dais from where he was supposed to address a political rally.

Meanwhile, the ground on which the Prime Minister was supposed to address the political rally was already packed by BJP supporters hours before the scheduled arrival of the Prime Minister there.

The situation became such at a time that the security personnel had to close the entry gates with thousands of BJP supporters still waiting outside the rally ground. As the news of the failure of the Prime Minister’s chopper to land at the helipad reached there, several BJP supporters expressed frustration.

At the Taherpur rally, the Prime Minister was supposed to kick off the BJP’s sustained campaign to counter the Trinamool Congress on the contentious citizenship issue of the Matua community.

Pakistan court sentences Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi to 17-year imprisonment in corruption case

Islamabad, Dec 20: A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former PM Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison in connection with the Toshakhana-2 corruption case, local media reported.

The case involves the purchase of an expensive jewellery set, gifted to Imran by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit in May 2021, at a nominal price.

The verdict was pronounced by Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s special court during proceedings conducted at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, where Imran is being imprisoned.

Under the ruling, Imran was sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison, receiving 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, and seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Bushra Bibi also received a 17-year imprisonment sentence under the same legal provisions.

Additionally, both were fined Rs 16.4 million, with failure to pay the fines resulting in further imprisonment.

“This court, while passing sentences, has considered the old age of Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi, as well as the fact that Bushra Imran Khan is a female. It is in consideration of both said factors that a lenient view has been taken in awarding lesser punishment,” Pakistani leading daily Dawn reported, quoting the court order.

Following the verdict, legal teams of Imran and Bushra said they would challenge the verdict before the high court.

The two were reportedly indicted in December last year, and in October this year, both denied the charges, calling them “fabricated and politically motivated” attempts to strip him from politics.

Reports suggest that while recording his statement before the special court, Imran dismissed the prosecution’s version, alleging that the entire case was “malicious, fabricated, and politically engineered”.

He argued that he did not fall within the definition of “public servant” under the Pakistan Penal Code, maintaining that during his tenure as the Prime Minister, he was not aware of the specific details of the gift presented to his wife.

The PTI founder asserted that all procedures under the country’s Toshakhana Policy 2018 were followed. He added that the gift was reported to the PM Office protocol section, assessed, and legally retained following payment to the national exchequer.

“We complied with the Toshakhana Policy in letter and spirit,” he said.

CBK files chargesheet in Rs 50 lakh land fraud case; four booked

Srinagar, Dec 20: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) has submitted a charge sheet in FIR No. 02/2025 under Sections 420 and 471 read with Section 120-B of the RPC before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, against four accused persons for their alleged involvement in a large-scale land fraud case, officials said.

A CBK spokesperson said in a statement, the charge sheet has been filed against Mohd Afzal Sheikh, son of Late Ghulam Qadir Sheikh, resident of Gopalpora, Chadoora, Budgam; Mohd Sikander Dar, son of Ghulam Mohd Dar, resident of Chainabal Mirgund, Pattan, Baramulla; and Ali Mohd Dar, son of Mohd Ibrahim Dar, resident of Chainabal Mirgund, Pattan, Baramulla.

The spokesperson said that the case originated from a written complaint alleging that in September 2022, the complainant was induced by the accused land brokers and the landowner to purchase four kanals of land situated at Revenue Estate Ranbirgarh–Pratapgarh, Srinagar. The complainant was shown revenue records, Naqsh-e-Amini, and geo-tagged photographs to establish the ownership and location of the land. Relying on these representations, the complainant paid ₹50 lakh, after which the sale deed was registered and possession was handed over.

Subsequently, he said, the complainant discovered that the land shown at the site did not correspond to the land mentioned in the sale deed. Investigation revealed that the complainant was shown accessible land falling under Survey No. 207, whereas the land actually sold was under Survey No. 94, which is a wetland with no approach access. The probe further established that the accused, in connivance with one another, forged and misused documents to defraud the complainant.

The investigation conclusively established a well-hatched criminal conspiracy. Accordingly, the charge sheet has been filed for judicial adjudication.
