Worsening winter air quality in Kashmir raises health concerns

Worsening winter air quality in Kashmir raises health concerns

Srinagar, Dec 06: As winter sets in and temperatures continue to dip, Kashmir is witnessing a steady deterioration in air quality, raising serious public health concerns.

Environmental experts and doctors said that prolonged dry weather, increased traffic emissions, biomass burning, and industrial pollutants have pushed pollution levels up, particularly in urban pockets

Residents have reported a visible layer of haze over many parts of the Valley, while air quality monitors have repeatedly recorded PM2.5 and PM10 levels above safe limits in recent days.

The pollution levels remained high with PM10 ranging between 136 and 243 micrograms per cubic metre and PM2.5 between 86 and 167 micrograms per cubic metre, both far above the World Health Organization’s safe limits.

Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr Javid Ahmad Bhat, said that the worsening air quality is directly impacting public health. “Outpatient departments in hospitals have begun to see a surge in patients complaining of cough, breathlessness, chest tightness, burning eyes, and throat irritation,” he said.

“The number of patients with respiratory issues, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, has notably increased over the past few weeks,” he added.

The doctor said that poor air quality aggravates existing conditions and triggers fresh episodes of respiratory distress. Children, elderly, and people with pre-existing lung or heart conditions are especially vulnerable, he added.

Doctors warned that the impact is not limited to respiratory ailments.

A cardiologist working at GMC Srinagar said that prolonged exposure to polluted air increases the risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, and stroke. “Fine particulate matter enters the bloodstream and can cause inflammation, which puts additional strain on the heart,” he said.

Studies have also linked poor air quality to fatigue, headaches, decreased immunity, anxiety, and disrupted sleep cycles.

Environmental officials attribute the worsening air quality to a combination of factors that include the lack of rainfall, which helps settle dust and pollutants, increased vehicular emissions due to traffic congestion, burning of waste, including plastic and biomass, use of coal bukharis and wood for heating and dust generated from construction sites.

An official said the Valley needs stricter monitoring and long-term planning. “Without sustainable urban management and reduced emissions, we will continue to face worsening air quality each winter,” he said.

Doctors have urged the public to take preventive measures to reduce exposure and avoid health complications by limiting outdoor exposure, avoiding morning and evening outdoor activities when pollution levels peak.

They advised keeping windows closed on hazy days, wearing N95 or KN95 masks while outdoors to filter harmful particles, drinking plenty of water to help flush toxins from the body, using air purifiers indoors, especially important for patients with asthma, heart disease, or chronic lung issues.

“Avoid burning trash or biomass, as this is one of the major contributors to harmful pollutants; ventilate rooms during afternoon hours when pollution levels are relatively lower,” the doctors said. They called for taking extra care of vulnerable groups

Environmental activists and health experts have asked the administration to intensify pollution monitoring, regulate construction dust, promote cleaner heating solutions and increase green cover.

Normalcy restored at airports across country: Govt

Normalcy restored at airports across country: Govt

Mumbai, Dec 06: Normalcy is restored at airports across the country and all necessary facilities are being provided to passengers, the Civil Aviation Ministry said on Saturday.

Amid massive disruptions in flight operations due to crew shortage, IndiGo cancelled hundreds of flights, including 1,600 on Friday and over 800 on Saturday, since the crisis started earlier this week, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports across the country.

IndiGo operates 2,300 flights across the country in a day.

“Normalcy is restored at airports across the country and all necessary facilities are provided to passengers. Check-in and check-out are happening smoothly,” the ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said it has made arrangements to accommodate 25 grounded IndiGo aircraft at its facility.

In a statement, MIAL further said it has implemented a range of initiatives to support passengers stranded at the terminal due to flight cancellations and operational disruptions.

These measures have been implemented to enhance passenger comfort, provide clear information and ensure seamless logistics management during these challenging circumstances, MIAL said.

According to MIAL, additional chairs have been placed at multiple locations across both terminals (T1 and T2) to ensure passengers have ample seating while waiting while complimentary refreshments are being served to stranded passengers to help ease their wait.

Besides this, additional duty terminal managers and customer service executives have been deployed at both terminals to facilitate passenger movement and cater to their needs, MIAL said.

It also said that airport concessionaires/outlets have been instructed to maintain sufficient supplies of food and beverages for passenger convenience. The airport is also actively monitoring product pricing to ensure fairness.

Special gates have been set up to expedite the exit process for passengers affected by flight cancellations, the private airport operator said, adding that airport terminal operations, airline representatives, and CISF personnel are stationed at these gates to expedite the process.

Moreover, the terminal help desk is being manned round the clock, offering clear and timely information to passengers in need of support, it said.

A dedicated taskforce has been established by the airport comprising terminal operations (T1 & T2), airport baggage operations, MIAL security, CISF, and IndiGo airline staff, that is focused on retrieving checked-in baggage from cancelled flights and ensure prompt processing to reduce inconvenience to passengers, the private airport operator said.

It also said due to the uncertainty surrounding flight connections, frequent rescheduling and limited information, operational challenges such as stand availability and scheduling management have arisen.

However, the airport team is actively working to obtain clearer updates and manage airside operations effectively.

MIAL also said despite space constraints at Mumbai Airport, special parking arrangements have been made to accommodate about 25 grounded IndiGo aircraft, while additional traffic marshals have been deployed by the airport to ensure smooth passenger movement at the multi-level car parking and while exiting the terminals.

‘Show me the money ma’am’, quips Omar after Sitharaman praises his ‘focused’ approach to restore J&K’s economy

‘Show me the money ma’am’, quips Omar after Sitharaman praises his ‘focused’ approach to restore J&K’s economy

New Delhi, Dec 06: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday appreciated Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his “focused” approach to restore the Union territory’s economy, to which he responded by thanking her and quipping, “Please show me the money ma’am.”

The finance minister’s commendation, delivered at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, came while reflecting on the national economy’s journey, and highlighting the specific efforts in Jammu and Kashmir.

She recalled how the UT’s economy had been picking up under the Central rule, citing the successful “restoration of the J-K Bank”, and the Centre’s efforts to go into the “granular details” to boost the local economy.

However, she noted that the revival took a “major hit” when the crucial tourism sector “came to a standstill” following external factors, in a veiled reference to border troubles and attacks, including the April 22 incident in Pahalgam.

“I must appreciate the chief minister of J-K who met me twice, focused on restoring the economy after the tourism sector came to a standstill,” Sitharaman said.

Speaking at the same summit, Abdullah thanked the finance minister for her “kind” words and quipped, “Now, the next part — ma’am, please show me the money because that’s in extremely short supply.”

The chief minister admitted that he might get into trouble with some of his constituents after making a statement that the Centre has been very helpful to his government, and said he is very happy to own the decisions he takes.

“Good, bad, ugly… I have never shied away from taking responsibility for what I have done. And, therefore, if I have pivoted my government or my politics to ensure a good working relationship with the government of India, I own that. And I will own its consequences,” Abdullah said.

It is important to understand that a good working relationship with the Centre does not mean that his party has any alliance with the BJP, he said.

“I do not see eye to eye with the BJP. I will continue to oppose the politics of the BJP. But at the same time, I will seek to work with the government of India as best possible,” Abdullah said.

On his relation with J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Abdullah said it is a work in progress and “we will leave it at that”.
