16 flights cancelled at Srinagar Airport amid IndiGo disruptions

Srinagar, Dec 06: Flight operations at Srinagar International Airport remained partially disrupted for the second consecutive day on Saturday as IndiGo continued to cancel several scheduled services, officials said.

Officials said that 64 flight movements — 32 arrivals and 32 departures — were planned for the day.

Of these, IndiGo accounted for 36 movements. However, the airline cancelled 14 services in the morning window, including seven arrivals and seven departures, they said.

Officials added that two additional flights operated by other carriers — one arrival and one departure — were also cancelled, taking the total number of cancelled movements to 16 by 8 am. No major delays were reported in the first operational hours, they said.

Other airlines continued to operate normally, and the remaining flight schedule was intact, according to airport authorities. (KNS).

IndiGo cancels over 200 flights from Delhi, Mumbai on Saturday

Mumbai, Dec 06: Domestic carrier IndiGo has cancelled over 200 flights from Delhi and Mumbai on Saturday, a day after managing to temporarily secure major relaxations in the second phase of the court-mandated new flight duty and rest period norms for cockpit crew, sources said.

Of these cancelled flights, 109 IndiGo flights were cancelled at Mumbai airport, 51 arrivals and 58 departures, and 106 flights at Delhi airport, which included 54 departures and 52 arrivals, they said.

On Friday, when IndiGo cancelled over 1,000 flights from across airports, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, after maintaining a stoic silence over the grave crisis for three days, apologised in a video message for the major inconvenience caused to passengers due to the disruptions.

In the one-way video communication, Elbers also said that the airline was expecting fewer than 1,000 flights on Saturday.

It may be mentioned here that on Friday, DGCA provided temporary relief to IndiGo, which is partially owned by Rahul Bhatia, by way of rolling back the night duty definition to 12 am-5 am from 12 am-6 am earlier, and allowing its pilots to do six night-landings from two earlier, besides other relaxations.

Meanwhile, the pilots’ body, Airlines’ Pilots Association (ALPA) India, has taken a “strong” objection to the DGCA’s “selective and unsafe” relief to IndiGo, saying that the relaxations have not just “destroyed regulatory parity but also placed millions of passengers at “heightened risk”.

Following the meeting convened by the Ministry of Civil Aviation with ALPA India and other pilot associations on December 5, the Ministry announced that it has decided to place the implementation of the revised FDTL CAR in abeyance.

“ALPA India expresses its deep concern that this step directly contradicts the Court’s directions, which mandate the enforcement of fatigue-mitigation standards rooted in aviation science,” the Association said in a statement late Friday.

It stated that keeping the FDTL in abeyance not only undermines judicial authority but also heightens the risk to pilots and passengers by delaying essential fatigue protections.

“We urge the (Civil Aviation) Ministry and the regulator to uphold the Court’s order in both letter and spirit and to prioritise the safety of the pilots and travelling public above all commercial considerations,” ALPA India said.

It is worth noting that IndiGo was the first carrier to oppose the new FDTL norms for pilots when they were introduced in January 2024, with a March implementation timeline.

It had been argued that the airlines require more time to put in place due to additional crew requirements. The latest FDTL norms, which entail increased weekly rest periods to 48 hours, extended night hours, and limiting the number of night landings to only two, as against six earlier, were initially also opposed by domestic airlines, including IndiGo and Tata Group-owned Air India.

But they were subsequently rolled out by the DGCA following the Delhi High Court’s directives, albeit with a delay of over one year, in a phased manner, and with certain variations for airlines like IndiGo and Air India.

While the first phase of these FDTL norms came into force in July, the second phase, which reduced the number of night landings from six to two earlier, was implemented from November 1.

The norms were originally to be put in place in March 2024.

CBK files chargesheet against ‘Chronic Offender’ in high-value Dubai export scam

Srinagar, Dec 06: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has filed a chargesheet against two individuals, including a habitual offender, in a high-value Dubai export scam. The chargesheet has been submitted in absentia before the Court of the City Judge, Srinagar, as both persons have remained absconding, officials said.

Officials identified the accused as Zahid Bashir Sofi @ Shagoo, S/o Bashir Ahmad, R/o House No. 2, Andrabi Colony, Narbal, and his wife Shugufta. They were allegedly involved in the fraudulent extraction of money on the pretext of providing gas agencies.

In an official statement, a CBK spokesperson said that the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has filed a chargesheet in Case FIR No. 31/2023 under Sections 420 and 120-B RPC before the Hon’ble Court of City Judge, Srinagar, against two accused individuals, including habitual offender Zahid Bashir Sofi @ Shagoo, S/o Bashir Ahmad, R/o House No. 2, Andrabi Colony, Narbal.

As both accused persons continue to remain absconding, the chargesheet has been presented in absentia under Section 512 CrPC. Zahid Bashir Shagoo and his wife Shugufta have already been found involved in multiple earlier fraud cases, including Case FIR No. 21/2022 and Case FIR No. 13/2018, both pertaining to alleged fraudulent extraction of money on the pretext of providing gas agencies. Chargesheets in these cases have likewise been filed before the competent courts in absentia under Section 512 CrPC after they evaded arrest.

The EOW notes that Shagoo’s repeated involvement in high-value fraud cases reflects a persistent pattern of alleged criminal conduct resulting in substantial financial losses to victims. His continued evasion of law enforcement remains a matter of serious concern.

In Case FIR No. 31/2023, the matter originated from a written complaint alleging that Zahid Bashir Sofi @Shagoo deceitfully induced the complainant to invest in a purported export business involving mutton, rice, and other goods destined for Dubai. Shagoo, in alleged collusion with co-accused Javeed Ahmad Shah, is reported to have executed a carefully planned scheme that included taking the complainant to Punjab to sign a forged agreement with “Mahabir Rice Mill”, Mahabir Solvent, Rice Market GT Road Karnal, and subsequently escorting him to Dubai to create false credibility around the alleged venture.

On the basis of these misrepresentations, the complainant invested ₹34,74,600, which, as per investigation, was misappropriated. The probe established the use of forged documents, fabricated agreements, and deliberate inducement, leading to the establishment of offences punishable under Sections 420 and 120-B RPC. Accordingly, the chargesheet has been submitted before the Hon’ble Court of Law for judicial determination.

If anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts of the accused Chronic Habitual Offender Zahid Bashir Shagoo, they are requested to share it with the investigating agency. The identity of the information provider will be kept confidential.

Discussion on 2nd nuclear plant, increased cooperation in fertilisers, transport corridors; Key takeaways from India-Russia joint statement

New Delhi, Dec 06: India and Russia moved to strengthen the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ by broadening cooperation in several sectors, including trade, nuclear energy, defence, and science and technology.

The Ministry of External Affairs released a joint statement on Friday outlining the key outcomes of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

PM Modi and Putin noted the importance of further discussion on the second site in India for a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), with Russia also assuring to make the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant completely operational.

According to the joint statement, India will strive to finalise the formal allotment of the second site in accordance with earlier signed agreements.

Both leaders agreed to broaden cooperation in nuclear energy, including fuel cycle, life cycle support for operating Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) and non-power applications.

During the joint press briefing with PM Modi, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s support to make the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) completely operational. Two of the six reactors at the nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu are already operational.

“We’re conducting a flagship project to build the largest Indian nuclear power plant, Kudankulam. Two out of six reactor units have already been connected to the energy network, and four are still under construction. Getting this nuclear power plant to full power output will make an impressive contribution to the energy requirements of India,” Putin said

Along with it, both leaders decided to elaborate a new agenda of interaction in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy and related high technologies.

According to the joint statement, both sides noted the importance of cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy as a significant component of the strategic partnership, taking into account the plans of the Government of India to increase India’s nuclear energy capacity to 100 GW by 2047.

The Sides agreed to accelerate technical and commercial discussions on Russia’s VVER (Veda-Vodyanoi Energetichesky Reaktor–water cooled power reactor), research and joint development of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), localisation and joint manufacturing of nuclear equipment and fuel assemblies for Russian-designed large capacity NPPs, subject to terms and conditions as mutually agreeable.

Noting the importance of cooperation in Space, the two Sides welcomed the enhanced partnership between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Russian State Space Corporation “Roscosmos” in the use of outer space for peaceful purposes, including in the human spaceflight programs, satellite navigation and planetary exploration. They noted the progress in mutually beneficial cooperation in rocket engine development, production and use.

Additionally, both sides welcomed steps to ensure the long-term supply of fertilisers to India and discussed the potential establishment of joint ventures in this area.

In this effort, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed among JSC UralChem, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited, National Fertilisers Limited, and Indian Potash Limited.

Further to enhance cooperation in building stable and efficient transport corridors, an MoU on the Training of Specialists for Ships Operating in Polar Waters was signed with the focus on expanding logistics links for improving connectivity and enhancing infrastructure capacity to support the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the Chennai-Vladivostok (Eastern Maritime) Corridor, and the Northern Sea Route.

The two Sides confirmed their readiness to intensify trade and investment cooperation in the Far East and the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. The Program of India-Russia Cooperation in Trade, Economic and Investment Spheres in the Russian Far East for the period from 2024 to 2029 provides the necessary framework for further cooperation between India and the Russian Far East region, especially in the sectors of agriculture, energy, mining, manpower, diamonds, pharmaceuticals, maritime transport, etc.

Both Sides underscored the importance of holding regular bilateral consultations on Arctic-related issues and welcomed the progress made in multifaceted bilateral cooperation on the Northern Sea Route. The Russian Side appreciated the participation of the Indian delegation in the 6th International Arctic Forum held in Murmansk in March 2025. The Indian Side expressed its readiness to play an active role as an Observer in the Arctic Council, according to the joint statement.

Now in the most watched military and military technical cooperation, both Sides agreed to encourage joint manufacturing in India of spare parts, components, aggregates and other products for maintenance of Russian origin arms and defence equipment under Make-in-India program through transfer of technology and setting up of joint ventures for meeting the needs of the Indian Armed Forces as well as subsequent export to mutually friendly third countries.

The leaders also expressed satisfaction with regular military contacts, including the meeting of Defence Ministers in Qingdao in June 2025 on the sidelines of the SCO Member-States’ Defence Ministers’ Meeting. Both Sides appreciated the Joint Military Exercises INDRA of the Armed Forces and reaffirmed their commitment to maintain the momentum of joint military cooperation activities and expand military delegation exchanges.

Additionally, Russia and India agreed to continue jointly developing systems of bilateral settlements through the use of national currencies in order to ensure the uninterrupted maintenance of bilateral trade. Additionally, the Sides have agreed to continue their consultations on enabling the interoperability of the national payment systems, financial messaging systems, and central bank digital currency platforms.

Russian President Putin concluded his two-day visit to Delhi on Friday night.

FIFA awards first-ever peace prize to US President Donald Trump ahead of World Cup draw

Washington, Dec 06: FIFA, the global governing body for international football, on Friday named American President Donald Trump as the first winner of the newly-created FIFA Peace Prize, during the draw ceremony for next year’s FIFA Men’s World Cup to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Trump proclaimed that “the world is a safer place now” as he received the award at the draw for the 2026 World Cup in Washington, DC. FIFA will be distributing the teams.

Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president and one of Trump’s closest sporting allies, presented the honour onstage at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts on Friday, saying Trump had been selected “in recognition of his exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world”.

Trump, who has been openly campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize but has not been nominated this year, was heavily favoured to receive the newly created award because of Infantino’s support.

The certificate that Infantino handed Trump recognises the U.S. president for his actions to “promote peace and unity around the world.” FIFA says the prize is for “individuals who help unite people in peace through unwavering commitment and special actions”.

“This is what we want from a leader — a leader that cares about the people,” Infantino said about Trump, who wore a gold medal around his neck and was presented with a gold trophy with his name on it that depicts hands holding up the world, as it does in the FIFA World Cup.

In his bid to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump has laid claim to various peace initiatives, including brokering peace between Israel and Palestine and India and Pakistan when they engaged in an arms exchange after India launched Operation Sindoor to destroy terror infrastructure across the border in Pakistan following a terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir.

India has repeatedly denied that a ceasefire during Operation Sindoor was agreed because of American intervention.

Admission on basis of religion to vitiate atmosphere: Mehbooba

Jammu, Dec 5: People Democratic Party (PDP) president and the former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Friday stated that the admission row in SMVDIME was unfortunate and if the religion was made admission criterion instead of merit, it would vitiate atmosphere across the country.

“Mufti Sahib, as the Chief Minister, had donated land for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU). Merit was the criterion for admission,” she said.

PDP president, who travelled in Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat Express for the first time, was responding to media queries in Katra. She described her travel experience as “very heart-warming.”

“It was very beautiful. Felt good as the distance was covered in three hours. This (Katra) is the abode of Mata Vaishno Devi. Earlier during my college days, I used to frequently visit this place. I used to visit the shrine also. All those cherished memories were refreshed,” she said.

NC uses Sheikh Abdullah’s 120th birth anniversary to showcase governance gains

NC uses Sheikh Abdullah’s 120th birth anniversary to showcase governance gains

Srinagar, Dec 5: A winter morning at Hazratbal carried more than the chill in the air.

It carried remembrance.

As soft sunlight touched the Dal Lake, the National Conference gathered to mark the 120th birth anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, National Conference founder and a statesman whose legacy remains deeply embedded in Kashmir’s political consciousness.

At the Mazar-e-Anwar, NC President Farooq Abdullah and Vice President, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, led party leaders in offering floral tributes and Fatiha.

The crowd stood in quiet reflection, and with each prayer, memories of Sheikh Abdullah’s life, his mass appeal, leadership, and long political journey seemed to resonate within the moment.

Senior leaders, Members of Parliament (MPs), legislators, and representatives across the provincial, zonal, women’s wing, Youth National Conference (YNC), minority, media, and social media units attended the gathering.

Many sat longer after the prayers, listening to verses of the Holy Quran as they drifted through the mausoleum, turning the commemoration into a space of both emotion and reflection.

For many long-time members, this day is more than a ritual.

It is a reminder of roots, sacrifice, and the beginning of a political movement that shaped modern Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing party workers on the occasion, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah defended the performance of the Jammu and Kashmir government, asserting that much had been achieved in its first year despite limited administrative powers under the Union Territory framework.

However, he acknowledged that more needed to be done to alleviate public hardships.

“We still have a lot to cover. Whatever we could do this year, it is before you. Our opponents will always tell you what has not been done, but not what has been achieved,” Abdullah said.

He said that one of the biggest accomplishments was the restoration of free movement and expression.

“Today, our opponents take out rallies and protest marches,” he said, calling it a sign of democratic space returning.

Yet, Abdullah expressed concern over internal disunity and statements made publicly by some party leaders.

“For God’s sake, tell me what more could have been done in a year, even as everything is up to the Lieutenant Governor? Despite that, our endeavour has been to ease the sufferings of the people. Our MLAs go to every corner and address public issues,” he said.

Calling the party’s journey “like walking on a razor’s edge,” Abdullah pointed to the challenges faced in governance and public expectation.

He reminded workers that transformation takes time.

“We still have four more years. God willing, you will see the change in your areas,” Abdullah said.

He urged the party to open doors for young and educated leadership, especially women, stating that the forthcoming municipal and panchayat elections demand new energy and participation.

“Our educated boys and girls must come forward. Strengthen the party instead of issuing statements. Everyone is doing that,” Abdullah said, pressing for discipline and unity within ranks.

He reminded that unity remains the organisation’s biggest strength.

“Opponents will create hurdles, but do not be afraid. God, who gave you success, will continue to bless you,” Abdullah told workers.

In a reflective closing note, he said he himself could have gone to Parliament or the Rajya Sabha, but chose instead to allow others who could represent the people more effectively.

As the gathering dispersed, the breeze carried away voices and verses, leaving behind petals on marble and a moment of continuity between past and present.

For many in Hazratbal, the day was less about nostalgia and more about recommitment to legacy, to leadership, and to the long political road ahead.
