Mehboob Beg remembers ‘Fakhr-e-Kashmir’ Mirza Afzal Beg on 44th death anniversary

Srinagar, June 12: Former Member of Parliament Dr. Mehboob Beg has paid rich tributes to his father and veteran Kashmiri leader Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg, popularly known as “Fakhr-e-Kashmir” (Pride of Kashmir), on his 44th death anniversary, recalling his contribution to land reforms and the welfare of the common people.

A gathering was organised at Mirza Afzal Beg’s residence in Sarnal, Anantnag, where political workers, admirers and local residents assembled to remember the late leader’s political legacy and public service.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mehboob Beg said Mirza Afzal Beg played a pioneering role in championing the rights of ordinary Kashmiris and emerged as a prominent voice for the people during the political developments that followed the events of 1931.

He said Beg forcefully represented Kashmiri aspirations before commissions such as the Milton and Glancy Commissions and remained steadfast in advocating for the interests of the people. Dr. Beg also recalled that his father resigned from the Maharaja’s cabinet when he felt the concerns of Kashmiris were not being adequately addressed.

Highlighting Mirza Afzal Beg’s role in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s land reforms, Dr. Mehboob Beg said the measures introduced under his leadership helped reduce economic disparities and empowered the farming community. He described the reforms as a landmark achievement that continues to be cited as a model of social justice.

Dr. Beg also spoke about his father’s legal expertise and political stature, stating that his work and vision earned appreciation from noted legal minds, journalists and public figures.

Remembering the late leader’s dedication and foresight, Dr. Mehboob Beg said Mirza Afzal Beg devoted his life to the welfare of the people and remained committed to safeguarding Kashmiri interests throughout his political career.

Participants at the event recalled Mirza Afzal Beg’s contributions to Jammu and Kashmir’s political and social landscape and paid floral tributes in his memory. The gathering concluded with prayers for the departed leader.

Amit Shah chairs meeting to review security preparedness

Amit Shah chairs meeting to review security preparedness

New Delhi, June 12: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security and operational preparedness for the upcoming annual Amarnath Yatra, officials said.

The yatra is scheduled to begin on July 3.

The meeting was attended by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Director General GP Singh, besides other senior security and administrative officials.

The 57-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine in the Himalayas requires a massive security deployment, with the Central and Union Territory agencies working in close tandem.

Officials said the agencies are combining advanced surveillance technology, intelligence-led monitoring, and multi-agency coordination to ensure a completely secure environment for the devotees.

Pilgrims will travel through the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.

Earlier this week, Lieutenant Governor Sinha reviewed the preparations, directing departments and security agencies to ensure smooth arrangements covering infrastructure, security, healthcare, sanitation, connectivity and pilgrim services.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police has also deployed sophisticated screening and anti-sabotage equipment.

These include portable RCIED jammers, deep search metal detectors, explosive and liquid explosive detectors, non-linear junction detectors (NLJDs), contraband busters, prodder vehicle search mirrors, optical fibrescopes, multi-type CCTV systems, XBIS, vehicle-mounted XBIS, multi-zone DFMDs (Fixed/multizone), HHMDs, search metal detectors, and other specialised equipment, they added.

Police have also launched the QR-based “Pahchan App”, designed to digitally verify workers and vendors operating along the yatra route.

Officials say the system will help prevent unverified individuals from infiltrating the pilgrimage ecosystem while improving accountability and crowd management.

Tenant verification drives, inspections of lodgement centres and intelligence-gathering operations have also been intensified.

The CRPF, which plays a pivotal role in securing the pilgrimage, has undertaken extensive reviews of operational preparedness.

CRPF DG Singh also visited the Valley and took stock of security arrangements along the route to Baltal and directing commanders to adopt proactive measures.

He reviewed security and logistical arrangements along the yatra route up to the Baltal base camp and emphasised the importance of maintaining a robust security grid through close coordination among all the stakeholders.

Singh said inter-agency coordination must be strengthened to ensure a safe and incident-free pilgrimage.

AFSPA should be revoked from J&K if situation has improved: Sakina Itoo

AFSPA should be revoked from J&K if situation has improved: Sakina Itoo

Srinagar, June 12: Jammu and Kashmir Health and Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Friday called for the revocation of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from the Union Territory, arguing that if the Centre believes the security situation has improved elsewhere, the same principle should apply to Jammu and Kashmir.

Her remarks come a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that AFSPA would be withdrawn from the entire Northeast next year, except for one or two states. Speaking after the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Centre, Assam and Nagaland on mineral oil operations in the Assam-Nagaland boundary areas, Shah said the shrinking footprint of AFSPA in the region was a reflection of improved peace and stability.

Reacting to the development, Itoo said Jammu and Kashmir too deserves similar consideration if the government maintains that the situation on the ground has improved.

“If it is better, then it should be removed from here too. If they say that the situation has improved, now there is nothing here. Now there are no stones, nothing is happening. After that, I think it should be removed from here first,” Itoo told reporters.

The minister also reiterated the demand for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the elected government has consistently raised the issue with the Centre.

“We have been trying for two years. Our Chief Minister has raised this demand many times. We are not asking for anything new—statehood was already there. We hope it will be returned,” she said.

On the education front, Itoo expressed concern over the deployment of teachers for Census-related duties, saying it was affecting academic activities in schools.

She said more than 14,000 teachers have been assigned Census work, leading to disruptions in classroom teaching and examinations during the ongoing academic session.

“We have written many times. We will continue to take up the matter so that children’s studies do not suffer,” she added.

NDA govt created environment for women to realise full potential: PM Modi

New Delhi, June 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the NDA government’s efforts are rooted in dignity, opportunity and empowerment, and these have helped create an environment where women can realise their full potential and contribute even more strongly to nation-building.

Modi said that over the last 12 years, the NDA government has worked to further women-led development, and this is visible across sectors.

He said from financial inclusion and entrepreneurship to education, healthcare, sanitation, housing, sports, science and governance, women are playing a prominent role across diverse sectors.

“The efforts of the NDA government are rooted in dignity, opportunity and empowerment. They have helped create an environment where women can realise their full potential and contribute even more strongly to nation-building,” he wrote on social media platform X.

The Prime Minister said he was particularly happy to see India’s “nari shakti” (women) make a mark in sectors like science, space and innovation.

The growing participation of women in emerging fields such as drone technology is opening new avenues of opportunity and transforming the development landscape across the nation, he said.

“Our government is actively supporting Self-Help Groups, which are going a long way in making women financially independent,” he said.

The Modi government has completed 12 years in power.

Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India for the first time on May 26, 2014, becoming the first-ever prime minister to be born after India attained Independence.

His second term began on May 30, 2019, while he was sworn in as prime minister for the third consecutive time on June 9, 2024, following another decisive victory in the 2024 Parliamentary elections.

On Wednesday, Modi also crossed the record of first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s 4,398 days in power as an elected prime minister following the 1952 general elections.

Nehru’s stint from 1947 to 1952 was as head of an interim government as elections were not held till 1952.

Will press for education minister’s resignation at Lucknow protest: CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke

Lucknow, June 12: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke said he would press for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in examinations, during a protest in Lucknow on Friday.

The protest, part of the youth-led movement’s nationwide demonstration that started in Delhi, is scheduled at Eco Garden in the state capital.

However, it was not confirmed whether the protest has police permission.

Phone calls and text messages from PTI to senior police officials remained unanswered.

“I have come for the protest. We have seen peaceful protests in Delhi and Pune wherein we put forth our demands for resignation of the education minister. Tomorrow (Friday) also we are going to do just that in a peaceful and constitutional manner,” Dipke told mediapersons outside Lucknow airport late Thursday night.

On denial of permission for protest by local authorities, Dipke said if that is the case, he would reach out to them seeking nod for their peaceful demonstration.

“We have done peaceful protests in Delhi and Pune. We are not doing anything wrong. We just want to put forth our views in a democracy,” he added.

The CJP held a protest in Pune on Thursday. After Lucknow, it plans to hold demonstrations in Amritsar and Bengaluru before the showdown at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on June 20.

UN chief condemns attack on tanker that killed three Indian seafarers: spokesperson

UN chief condemns attack on tanker that killed three Indian seafarers: spokesperson

United Nations, June 12: UN chief Antonio Guterres has condemned the attack on a Palau-flagged tanker off the coast of Oman in which three Indian seafarers have been killed, his spokesperson said.

On Wednesday, the US struck another Palau-flagged tanker, MT Settebello, killing three out of the 24 Indian sailors on board.

“…Notably, the Settebello tanker was hit and a number of Indian seafarers were killed. And that is an attack that was clearly condemned by the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). And we fully support and second that language,” Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said at the daily press briefing Thursday.

Dujarric was referring to a statement issued by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, in which he had expressed his “deep sadness” and “strong condemnation” of the attack on the tanker MT Settebello, sailing under the flag of Palau, off the coast of Oman.

The IMO statement added that the incident, which occurred near the Strait of Hormuz and is reported to have followed a projectile strike against the vessel, resulted in a fire on board and the deaths of the three seafarers.

Dominguez said in the statement that he “strongly” condemns any act from any party that endangers the lives of seafarers and the safety of international shipping.

“This is simply unacceptable. My thoughts are with the families of the three seafarers who lost their lives and with all those awaiting news of the crew members.”

Dominguez said IMO has underscored the need to protect seafarers, civilian shipping and the freedom of navigation at all times.

“All actions affecting international shipping must fully respect international law and the safety of life at sea. The protection of seafarers is a shared responsibility that must remain paramount,” Dominguez said.

IMO said it is monitoring the situation closely and calls for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

On the situation in West Asia, Guterres said he is deeply concerned by the continuing escalation in the region, including the strikes by the United States on Iran and the strikes by Iran on neighbouring countries in the Gulf and beyond that are not parties to the conflict and a significant increase in hostile rhetoric.

Guterres urged the parties to return to the full implementation of the ceasefire, to avoid any further deterioration, which could trigger a full resumption of the conflict, with unpredictable consequences for the region and the world, especially the most vulnerable countries.

The Secretary-General underscored that the exercise of navigational rights and freedoms, in accordance with international law, must be respected.

He further called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians, reiterating that the only way forward is through genuine dialogue and negotiations.

Guterres called on the United States and Iran to redouble their efforts towards a peaceful, comprehensive and durable agreement that advances regional and international peace and security.

Following Wednesday’s incident, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks, and he was handed a diplomatic note of protest.

India has described the attacks on commercial vessels as “deeply worrisome”, and it has strongly taken up the matter with the US.

India on Thursday said three merchant ships with Indian crew members came under attack from American military off the coast of Oman in the last four days, resulting in the death of the three nationals. New Delhi has lodged a strong protest with the US over the strikes.

A Palau-flagged oil tanker, Marivex, carrying 24 Indian seafarers, was disabled by US forces on June 8. All crew members were safely rescued.

On June 10, the US struck another Palau-flagged tanker, Settebello, killing three out of the 24 Indian sailors on board. Another vessel, ‘Jalveer’, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged tanker with 20 Indians, was attacked on Thursday.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Friday said at a news briefing that the three separate strikes on the Settebello, Marivex and Jalveer “came from the US Navy”.

The US military imposed a blockade on Iranian ports after Iran effectively shut the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which around 20 per cent of global energy supplies are transported in normal times.
