In a post on X, Shah congratulated every citizen as India won the “prestigious bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad”.

Gold surges to hit near two-week high of Rs 1.30 lakh/10g in Delhi markets

Gold surges to hit near two-week high of Rs 1.30 lakh/10g in Delhi markets

New Delhi, Nov 26: Gold prices surged Rs 1,200 to hit near a two-week high of Rs 1,30,100 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday, tracking a rally in the international markets, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

Analysts said the rise was mainly driven by renewed expectations of interest-rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve next month.

The precious metal of 99.5 per cent purity also advanced by Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,29,500 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes).

On November 13, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent closed at Rs 1,30,900 and Rs 1,30,300 per 10 gram levels, respectively.

“Gold extended its gains on Wednesday, climbing to a two-week high amid growing optimism over potential Federal Reserve rate cuts.

“Softer US macroeconomic data further strengthen expectations of a possible cut next month, following recent dovish comments from two Fed officials,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Silver prices also gained momentum for the second straight day, surging Rs 2,300 to Rs 1,63,100 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday.

In the global markets, spot gold climbed by USD 33.50, or 0.81 per cent, to USD 4,164.30 per ounce.

“Gold advanced to USD 4,165 per ounce ahead of US macroeconomic data, including durable goods orders and initial jobless claims, as recent comments from Fed Governors Miran and Waller indicated growing support for additional rate cuts,” Kaynat Chainwala, AVP Commodity Research, Kotak Securities, said.

According to Praveen Singh, AVP, Fundamental Research, Commodities, Mirae Asset Sharekhan, soft US economic data and growing expectations that White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett may become the next Federal Reserve chair have further fuelled the rate-cut sentiment.

“Hassett being closely aligned with President Donald Trump’s low rate and economic vision may hasten rate cuts,” he stated.

In addition, spot silver was trading 1.71 per cent higher at USD 52.37 an ounce in the overseas trade.

Renisha Chainani, Head – Research at Augmont, said, “A persistent increase in the price of the precious metal is limited by expectations of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine”.

However, given that investors are now looking to more US data for some encouragement, the fundamental background indicates that the path of least resistance for gold is upward, she added.

Banihal, Nov 26: In a major crackdown on environmental and health violations, the Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC) has ordered the immediate closure of 18 diagnostic centres and clinical laboratories operating illegally in Ramban district for gross violations of biomedical waste and pollution control laws.

According to an official order issued on November 24, 2025, these medical facilities were functioning without mandatory authorization under the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, and were also found violating provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.

The closure orders have been issued against the following diagnostic centres and laboratories in Banihal, Khari, Ukhral, Ramban, Batote, Gool and Sangaldan of Ramban district including M/s Riyan Clinical Laboratory (Banihal), Alshifa Clinical Laboratory (Ukhral), Bismillah Diagnostic Centre (Banihal), Malik Clinical Laboratory (Batote), Smile Dental Clinic (Ramban), Health Care and Clinical Laboratory (Khari), Noor’s Smile Dental Clinic (Ramban), Malik Clinical Laboratory (Sangaldan), Ace Diagnostic Centre (Banihal), Medi World Diagnostic Centre (Nagbal, Banihal), Alfa Diagnostic Centre (Banihal), Raghunath Diagnostic Centre (Ramban), Care Well Diagnostic Centre (Ramban), Khanday Hospital (Banihal), Prime Clinical Laboratory (Ramban), Maya Diagnostic Laboratory (Ramban), Jaan Clinical Laboratory (Banihal) and Hi-Tech Clinical Laboratory (Banihal).

Officials from the Pollution Control Committee revealed that despite repeated notices, including a final notice served on February 07, 2025, the concerned laboratory owners failed to obtain the necessary permissions and continued operations in violation of law.

A recent inspection conducted by the Divisional Officer, JKPCC Ramban confirmed that these units were not only operating without authorization but were also non-compliant in the segregation, handling and disposal of hazardous biomedical waste — posing serious risks to public health and the environment.

Following the inspection, the matter was escalated and closure was recommended by the Regional Director, JKPCC Jammu. Acting under powers vested through Section 33(A) of the Water Act and Section 31(A) of the Air Act, the committee ordered immediate shutdown of all listed establishments.

To ensure strict enforcement, the committee has directed the JPDCL Electric Division, Ramban to disconnect power supply to these labs, while the Jal Shakti Department has been instructed to terminate their water connections. The Deputy Commissioner, Ramban has been tasked with overseeing the full implementation of the closure orders on ground.

The operation and execution of this order will be monitored by the Divisional Officer, JKPCC Ramban. The order has been issued with the approval of the competent authority and duly signed by Dr. R. Gopinath, IFS, Member Secretary, J&K Pollution Control Committee.

This action comes as part of JKPCC’s wider efforts to tighten regulation on healthcare facilities and prevent environmental hazards arising from improper disposal of biomedical waste, which can have severe long-term health consequences for the local population.

J&K installs 3.81 lakh smart meters since 2024, reaches 40 pc of project target

Jammu, Nov 26: Jammu and Kashmir has achieved 40 per cent progress in the roll-out of smart electricity meters under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), with the installation of over 3.81 lakh devices across the Union Territory in more than a year, officials said.

The first phase of the project started in November 2020 with an initial target to install 20,000 meters in selected areas of Jammu and Srinagar cities, and it was eventually completed in 2022 with 1.5 lakh smart meters installed.

The second and third phases that began in 2024 with the cumulative target of over 9.50 lakh smart meter installations by 2026 are currently under implementation.

The progress report was shared at a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo here. The chief secretary reviewed the reform measures being implemented by the Power Development Department (PDD) with a focus on enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening infrastructure and substantially reducing power losses under the RDSS.

According to officials, 3,81,671 smart meters were installed, registering 40 per cent installation of the total 9,50,755 lakh meters targeted across Jammu & Kashmir.

A division-wise breakup showed Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JPDCL) has installed 1,87,894 meters out of the total sanctioned 7,62,872 meters, while Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) installed 1,93,777 meters against the target of 7,27,855 meters, marking steady progress towards a transparent and consumer-friendly power distribution mechanism across J&K.

Officials said works worth Rs 4,709 crore under loss reduction and Rs 1,053 crore under smart metering are targeted for completion under RDSS.

The works have been divided into multiple packages and awarded to four project implementing agencies, including JPDCL, KPDCL, Powergrid Energy Services Limited (PESL), and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), for their completion within deadlines, they said.

The progress in loss reduction and information technology and operational technology works stood at 74 per cent for JPDCL, 73 per cent for KPDCL, 57 per cent and 33 per cent for PESL in Kashmir and Jammu respectively, and 72 per cent and 31 per cent for NTPC, in these divisions.

The meeting was also informed that Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses have already been reduced from 58 per cent in 2022 to around 32 per cent at present, with a target to bring them down to 12 per cent by 2028, the officials said.

Similarly, the Average Cost of Supply (ACS) and Average Revenue Realized (ARR) gap has been reduced from Rs 3.11 to Rs 1.29 per unit, while billing efficiency has improved from 56 per cent to 69 per cent and collection efficiency from 75 per cent to 94 per cent, reflecting significant strides towards financial sustainability and operational efficiency in the power sector, the officials said.

Emphasising the need for strict adherence to the timelines, the chief secretary directed that all ongoing reform works aimed at loss reduction must be completed within the sunset period prescribed under RDSS by the Government of India.

He stressed on fixing daily and weekly targets for all components of loss reduction works, including LT cable replacement, augmentation and replacement of the distribution system, HT line cabling, replacement of HT conductors, feeder segregation and installation of electric poles.

He underlined the importance of improving feeder-wise billing and revenue collection efficiency and called for stringent action against officials found negligent or lax in discharging their responsibilities.

The chief secretary instructed the divisional commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir to conduct monthly reviews and identify field-level staff failing to perform.

Gambhir’s India surrenders meekly to South Africa

Gambhir’s India surrenders meekly to South Africa

Guwahati, Nov 26:  A clueless Indian team, which seemed lacking in both skills and resolve, succumbed to its biggest defeat in terms of runs, losing the second Test to South Africa by a whopping margin of 408 here on Wednesday, giving the visitors their first series triumph in the country in 25 years.

This was the second time in a space of mere 13 months that India ended up whitewashed at home, severely denting their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final.

Under head coach Gautam Gambhir, India have now lost five Tests against New Zealand and South Africa at home.

A chase of 549 was never possible but what one expected was a semblance of fight which wasn’t there on a day five Indian track presenting itself in all its might on which the ball bounced like a hissing snake and turned as if on a hairpin Himalayan bend.

Marco Jansen, who played the perfect all-rounder in this Test match, took a one-handed stunner to skittle India for 140 in 63.5 overs and give the Temba Bavuma-led side a victory to cherish for a long time.

“It’s little disappointing. As a team we need to get better. We need to give credit to the opposition. They dominated the series but at the same time, you can’t take cricket for granted (because of playing at home),” said a downcast India skipper Rishabh Pant in the post-match presentation, trying to make sense of his team’s recent home record.

Courtesy Gambhir’s inexplicable tactics and selection calls, the aura of invincibility that once accompanied the team at home lay in tatters at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on a slightly nippy Wednesday afternoon.

But the man was his usual combative self in the aftermath.

“I am the same guy who got you results in England and was coach for Champions Trophy,” he asserted in the post-match press conference.

“You don’t blame any individual or any particular shot. Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won’t do it going forward,” he added.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer’s career got a second wind as he decimated the Indian team with turn, bounce and zip off the same surface on which home bowlers looked pedestrian.

Once Pant (13) was dismissed failing to counter the bounce, the writing was on the wall.

“I have been coming to India but never thought that we will walk away with a 2-0 series win,” an expectedly delighted Bavuma said later.

The likes of Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel and Nitish Reddy, which is the new brigade in Test cricket simply didn’t have enough preparation to read a spinner from his hands.

Sudharsan scored 14 in 139 balls but was about to be dismissed about six times and looked like getting out to every delivery.

His lack of readiness was the buck that would stop at Gambhir’s door for his poor choice of personnel.

Gambhir’s obsession with bits and pieces cricketers in the traditional format has left them team in a flux with none of the players sure about their places and roles in the team.

The impact of this defeat will have far reaching implications in terms of confidence and pysche of the red-ball team going forward.

It wasn’t an easy pitch to survive on but the poor technique was disappointing along with the inability to read the drift, not playing with a soft bottom hand and a completely non-existent backfoot play.

Only Ravindra Jadeja (53) walked the talk when it came to putting up a good fight but there was no one at the other end to help the veteran.

In the end, lack of planning was evident and for the time, India look easily conquerable at home.
