Shukroo Band strikes a new chord in Shopian’s cultural scene

Shopian, Nov 24: When six young singers who met during the first edition of Shopian Idol last year came together to form the Shukroo Band, few imagined how quickly their journey would take flight. Today, the group performs at cultural events across the district, earning a steady income and emerging as one of Shopian’s most recognisable young music acts.

Officials say the band’s rise showcases the growing impact of cultural platforms introduced in the district over the past few years.

Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Shishir Gupta, said the administration aims to create positive cultural spaces that empower youth and offer meaningful opportunities. He said the success of Shukroo Band reflects the transformative power of such initiatives.

“Through initiatives like Shopian Idol, we aim to empower our youth, nurture their talent and give them platforms where they can shine with confidence,” Gupta said.

He added that cultural programmes also play a preventive role. “These platforms help steer young people away from drugs, radicalisation and other harmful distractions by engaging them in positive, creative pursuits,” he said.

Gupta said the administration is committed to scaling up such initiatives. “Our goal is to promote cultural diversity and create avenues that help the young generation of Shopian grow, succeed and make the district proud,” he added.

He said that success stories from last year have strengthened the resolve to expand the programme. “The rise of groups like the Shukroo Band proves that when talent meets opportunity, transformation becomes possible. Shopian Idol Season 2 is another step in that direction,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

“When the administration and community work together to support healthy youth activities, we open doors to brighter futures and help our youngsters become leaders of tomorrow,” he added.

Buoyed by last year’s success, Shopian Idol Season 2 is now set to kick off, offering an even larger platform for emerging singers from across the district. Organised by the District Administration, the talent show aims to identify and promote young performers who often lack opportunities to showcase their abilities.

Preparations are in full swing, and registrations are open to participants of all age groups.

“It is a kind of launch pad provided by the district administration to the aspiring singers of the district,” said Sajad Ahmad Bhat, Coordinator of the programme.

He said several rounds of auditions will be held across Shopian. “We are receiving an overwhelming response from aspiring singers,” he added.

The competition will feature auditions, eliminations and themed performances, culminating in a grand finale on a public stage in Shopian town. Judges will include experienced musicians and instructors from the Valley who have been closely involved in mentoring young talent.

“The idea is not just to find the best voice but to build confidence and create future opportunities,” Sajad Bhat said. “Last year’s contestants proved what can happen when talent meets the right platform.”

Local youth say the show acts as a bridge between passion and professional opportunity. “The youth are full of talent, but they lack the platform. Shopian Idol gives us that opportunity,” said Mohammad Amir, an aspiring singer.

Civil society members also believe such cultural activities help prevent youth from drifting toward harmful influences. “It will engage youth and keep them away from harmful distractions,” said Mitha Gatoo, a local social activist.

Authorities dismantle 3 brick kilns in Budgam, issue advisory to violators

Budgam, Nov 24: Authorities in central Kashmir’s Budgam on Monday intensified its ongoing enforcement drive against illegal brick kilns operating without authorization or violating environmental and land-use regulations. The team comprising of civil and police officials dismantled three brick kilns in several parts of the district afresh.

The drive has been intensified under the overall guidance of Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Dr Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat.

Today civil administration, supported by police authorities, dismantled three illegal brick kilns in village Mulshulla of Tehsil Beerwah. These units were found contributing substantially to air pollution, causing health hazards to the local population, and degrading productive agricultural land by rendering it barren.

The district administration has reiterated that such illegal activities will not be allowed to operate at the cost of public health, ecological safety, and agricultural sustainability.

The District Administration Budgam urged all owners of illegal brick kilns to voluntarily dismantle their structures on their own, failing which strict legal and enforcement action will be taken against them.

The operation was supervised on ground by SDM Beerwah, Toufeeq Gazi, along with Tehsildar Beerwah, SDPO Magam, and other concerned civil and police officers of the sub-division, ensuring smooth execution and adherence to legal procedures.

Local residents appreciated action of the district administration and urged that such drives should continue in the interest of public health and environmental protection.

The District Administration Budgam has reaffirmed that firm, coordinated and sustained action will continue across all tehsils to curb unauthorized brick kiln operations and safeguard the district’s environmental and agricultural resources.

Govt to announce early winter vacations for pre-primary classes

Govt to announce early winter vacations for pre-primary classes

Srinagar, Nov 24: In a latest development, the government has decided to announce early winter vacations for the kindergarten classes.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Minister for Education, Sakina Itoo said tomorrow (November 25) will be the last working day for students enrolled in kindergarten classes.

“I have discussed the matter with Director School Education Kashmir. Tomorrow will be the last working day for students of kindergarten classes,” Sakina Itoo told Greater Kashmir.

The decision comes in wake of the demand from parents for early announcement of winter vacation for kindergarten classes in view of the dip in weather conditions across Kashmir.

The demand comes days after the government announced that the winter vacations for classes up to 8th will commence from December first week.

“Temperature is already below normal. The time of mulling over a decision is over, they need to act now for primary kids sake. Think about kids with asthma and cold allergy. Going out right now is literally suicide for them,” said Asma, a parent from Srinagar.

The parents argued that the government should announce winter vacations for kindergarten classes in view of the prevailing cold weather.

“Entering a classroom which is centrally heated and then going out in the ground for morning and afternoon assemblies is dangerous for the small kids,” the parents said.

The parents said that continuing schools amid the prevailing weather was damaging and can prove fatal for the small school going children.

“The sunlight that we see in the afternoon is appealing and enticing to the eyes but it is not good for the general health,” the parents said.

Minister for Education also acknowledged the dip in weather conditions across Kashmir.

“Weather is very cold in Kashmir. Keeping in view the cold weather conditions, we have decided to close kindergarten classes early,” she told Greater Kashmir.

Gold falls to Rs 1.25 lakh per 10 gram on strong rupee, weak global cues

Gold falls to Rs 1.25 lakh per 10 gram on strong rupee, weak global cues

New Delhi, Nov 24: Gold prices declined by Rs 700 to Rs 1,25,400 per 10 grams in the national capital on Monday amid appreciation in the rupee, and weak global trends, according to marketmen.

Extending losses for the third straight session, the precious metal of 99.5 per cent purity dropped by Rs 700 to Rs 1,24,800 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes).

Silver too faced selling pressure for the third consecutive day, plunging by Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,55,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes).

On Monday, the rupee rebounded sharply by 50 paise to settle at 89.16 against the greenback, due to US dollar selling by banks and importers amid a dip in global crude oil prices.

“Gold prices opened weak, as a stronger rupee and softness in the international markets, pressured domestic prices,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.

Echoing similar views, Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said, gold has exhibited slightly higher volatility compared to global benchmarks due to sharp fluctuations in the rupee.

In the international markets, spot gold was trading marginally lower at USD 4,064.35 per ounce, while silver quoted 0.12 per cent higher at USD 50.09 per ounce.

“Spot gold eased to USD 4,060 per ounce as traders cautiously await a series of US economic releases, with any upside surprises likely to shift expectations back toward no rate cut,” Kaynat Chainwala, Analyst Commodities & Currency, Kotak Securities, said.

Renisha Chainani, Head – Research at Augmont, said mixed US jobs data and uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s next policy move have led to range-bound trading in bullion, but with a bearish bias.

Bullion holdings in the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) reserves climbed to 74.09 million troy ounces in October, marking the 12th consecutive month of accumulation, signalling strong central bank demand.

According to World Gold Council, global central banks bought 220 MT of gold in Q3, up 28 per cent from Q2.

Meanwhile, New York Fed President John Williams indicated that interest rates may still be lowered in the near term, increasing the likelihood of a possible move in December.

“Investors are now looking ahead to key US macroeconomic data this week, including retail sales, producer inflation and jobless claims, for further guidance,” Chainani said.

Current heart attack screening tools missing 45 pc people at risk: Study

Current heart attack screening tools missing 45 pc people at risk: Study

New Delhi, Nov 24: The cardiac screening tools used currently may be missing out 45 per cent of people at actual risk of heart attacks, according to a new study.

The study, led by Mount Sinai researchers in the US, exposed a major flaw in patient care and showed that relying on risk scores and symptoms alone may not help prevent the risk of a heart attack.

The results, published in a brief report in the JACC: Advances, stressed the need to focus on the silently building plaque.

“Our research shows that population-based risk tools often fail to reflect the true risk for many individual patients,” said corresponding author Amir Ahmadi, Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

“If we had seen these patients just two days before their heart attack, nearly half would not have been recommended for further testing or preventive therapy guided by current risk estimate scores and guidelines,” Ahmadi added.

To understand the accuracy of a widely used tool, the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score, and of a newer measure, called PREVENT, which adds variables and is intended to provide a more comprehensive estimate of cardiovascular risk along with symptomatic screening, the team analysed data from 474 patients under age 66 with no known coronary artery disease.

They found that if patients who had their first heart attack had been evaluated two days earlier, nearly half of them would have been labelled as low or borderline risk and not recommended for preventive therapy by ASCVD, and more than half of them would have been so labelled by PREVENT.

Overall, 45 per cent of patients would not have been recommended for preventive therapy or diagnostic testing under current ASCVD-based guidelines, and this number increased to 61 per cent when using the newer PREVENT calculator.

Most patients (60 per cent) did not develop symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath until less than two days before their cardiac event, showing that symptoms often appear too late to help with changing the course of the disease.

The Professor stated that instead of relying on risk scores and symptoms as primary gatekeepers for prevention, it may be better to “move toward atherosclerosis imaging to identify the silent plaque — early atherosclerosis — before it has a chance to rupture”.

Synergy is armed forces’ strength, Op Sindoor its apt example: Gen Dwivedi

Synergy is armed forces’ strength, Op Sindoor its apt example: Gen Dwivedi

Mumbai, Nov 24: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Monday said the strength of armed forces lies in synergy and Operation Sindoor is an apt example of this.

He was speaking during the commissioning of INS Mahe, the first of the Mahe-class anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft, in Mumbai.

“The strength of our armed forces lies in synergy,” General Dwivedi said.

The sea, land, skies form the single continuum of national security and together the Army, Navy and the Air Force form the trinity of India’s strategic strength. In the age of multi-domain operations, the country’s ability to act in concert from the depths of the ocean to the highest frontier will determine the security influence of the Indian republic, he said.

The Indian armed forces, he further said, are in operation in every domain, from Ladakh to the Indian Ocean, from information warfare to joint logistics.

“Op (Operation) Sindoor was an apt example of this (the synergy of the armed forces),” the Army chief said.

India carried out military action under Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack in April, which claimed the lives of 26 persons.

The Indian Army has launched a series of initiatives under an overall umbrella of transformation in which jointness and integration are important pillars, recognising that modern conflicts will be multi-domain, hybrid and require united national strength, Gen Dwivedi said.

An official said this was also the first time that an Army chief was present at the commissioning of a naval ship.

Following the commissioning of INS Mahe, Gen Dwivedi also awarded Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Commendation to the Navy personnel who played a key role in the commissioning of the ship, a rarity which will become more frequent in days to come as the level of synergy among the three forces increases, the official added.

The Indian Navy plays an important role in the neighbourhood as well as in the global environment in far-off lands where the Army’s efforts can play both a supplementary and a complementary role in soft and hard diplomacy, Gen Dwivedi said and referred to it as smart diplomacy.

The Indian Army and Indian Navy have always stood shoulder to shoulder for HADR (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief) missions across the globe or even the amphibious operations, he added.
