Israel launches fresh airstrikes on Yemen’s capital Sanaa

Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran-backed Houthis rock Yemen's capital

Sanaa, Aug 28: Israel launched airstrikes on Yemen’s capital Sanaa on Thursday, the media reported citing officials and local residents who heard a series of loud explosions.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the airstrikes in a statement, while Israel’s state-owned Kan TV news reported that the airstrikes were aimed at Houthi leaders, without disclosing their identity, Xinhua news agency reported.

The strikes came a few hours after the Israeli military said it intercepted two drones fired from Yemen.

The first drone entered Israeli airspace at noon, triggered air raid sirens, and was then intercepted by Israeli air force over communities near Gaza, while the second, fired less than two hours later, was intercepted before crossing into Israeli territory, the military said in a statement.

No human casualties or material damage have been reported from the two drone launches. There was no immediate comment from Yemen’s Houthi group regarding the incidents.

The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have carried out drone and missile attacks on Israel since November 2023 in what they describe as solidarity with Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Most of the projectiles have been intercepted by Israeli defenses.

Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-held areas, targeting airports, power stations, and ports in Yemen’s capital Sanaa and the city of Hodeidah.

Earlier, Israel’s army said that the deadly double strike on Gaza’s Nasser Hospital targeted a camera allegedly installed by Hamas, according to findings from an initial inquiry.

The double strike on Monday killed at least 20 people, including five journalists and several health workers, according to Gaza health authorities.

The Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis has been the last partially functional medical facility in southern Gaza, as Israel’s 22-month offensive has repeatedly struck hospitals across the enclave, leaving all of them either destroyed or partially damaged, Xinhua news agency reported.

In a statement, the military said that Golani Brigade troops identified the camera as positioned by Hamas in order “to observe the activity of IDF (Israel Defense Forces) troops” and to direct militant activities against them.

The military offered no evidence to support its claim but accused Hamas of using hospitals, including Nasser Hospital, for military purposes.

“The troops operated to remove the threat by striking and dismantling the camera and the inquiry showed that the troops operated to remove the threat,” the military said, without elaborating on why two strikes were needed to destroy one camera.

Illegal mining led to flood havoc: R S Pathania

Illegal mining led to flood havoc: R S Pathania

Udhampur, Aug 28: MLA Udhampur East Ranbir Singh Pathania on Thursday emphasised that the widespread devastation in J&K was not merely a natural disaster but was aggravated by unregulated and illegal mining.

He also made a fervent call to the central government to announce a special central package on the lines of the 2014 Srinagar floods to help Jammu and Kashmir recover fully.

Pathania was interacting with the people while conducting an extensive tour of flood-affected areas in his constituency, covering Rathian (near DPS), Channi More, Satteni, Sountha, Kashirah, Krowa, Kawa, Jaganoo, and Ritti.

He reviewed damages, interacted with affected families and instructed for urgent relief operations. He raised serious concerns that illegal mining was being carried out alarmingly close to water filtration plants, pumping stations, bridges, roads, and forest belts, destabilising riverbeds, triggering soil erosion, and undermining protective embankments.

“These unscientific activities have amplified the impact of floods, turning a natural calamity into a far more severe crisis. The havoc in Udhampur is several times worse than in other regions of J&K due to ecological disruption caused by mining,” he observed.

During his interactions with locals, Pathania noted that most losses suffered by households, farmers, and small traders did not qualify for compensation under SDRF norms and described the kitty announced by the J&K government as “a mere drop in the ocean”.

He urged the Modi government at the Centre to announce a special package on the lines of the 2014 Srinagar floods, ensuring comprehensive relief, restoration of critical infrastructure, revival of economic activity, and implementation of long-term flood-prevention measures to bring normalcy back and make Jammu and Kashmir more resilient.

He directed officials to provide shelters, rations, drinking water, medicines, and temporary connectivity while ensuring daily monitoring of relief distribution.

Pathania stressed the urgent need to strengthen roads, bridges, schools, health centres, irrigation channels, and public utilities and emphasised that flood management and disaster preparedness should be an integral part of the annual budget, with funds allocated for embankments, desilting, protective walls, and resilient infrastructure.

“This calamity offers hard lessons that must be learnt and applied immediately to prevent future disasters,” the BJP MLA said, urging authorities to adopt a proactive, long-term approach rather than only reactive relief measures.

Pathania assured the people that the central government was standing shoulder to shoulder with every affected family and emphasised that recovery must be coupled with protection, prevention, and long-term resilience measures.

Govt’s affidavit in HC to indicate steps on garbage dumping curb

Srinagar, Aug 28: The Jammu and Kashmir government, through a “specific affidavit,” would inform the High Court of J&K and Ladakh about the measures taken to prevent the dumping of garbage into the area surrounding the Wular, one of the largest freshwater lakes of Asia.

As a related Public Interest Litigation (PIL) came up for hearing, the government, through its senior Additional Advocate General, Mohsin Qadiri, informed a division bench of Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal that a specific affidavit indicating the required measures would be submitted.

This was in response to the submissions by Advocate Nadeem Qadri, as amicus curiae, who said, there are nearly 33 villages around the water body, and the authorities have apparently failed to take steps to ensure no garbage from the adjacent villages is dumped into the lake area.

The amicus curiae said that Rs 200 crore were provided in this regard, but the authorities have apparently failed to engage full time officials and officers for the conservation and preservation of the lake.

The senior AAG, on behalf of the government, said that “a specific affidavit in this regard shall also be filed before October 6”.

At the same time, the government informed the court that an additional Integrated Management Plan (IMP) as regards Wular Lake has been approved by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

The court was also informed that, as for Surinsar and Mansar lakes, the Integrated Management Plan is yet to be received from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Faced with this, the Senior AAG submitted that the needful should be done within a week.

In response to that, the Haigam and Shallbugh Wetland Conservation Reserve, IMP is under technical appraisal by Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Deputy Solicitor General of India, T M Shamsi, submitted that he would take up the matter with the concerned authorities and ensure that the response by IIT Roorke was received within a week to enable the authorities to process the matter.

With regard to Tso-Kar and Tso-Morari lakes, the court was informed that IMP was yet to be received from the Union Territory of Ladakh.

In response to this, DSGI Shamsi submitted that necessary approval and clearance would be accorded within a week to avert any further delay.

“In the wake of the above, for the present, we do not consider it necessary to pass any formal order,” the court said as it observed that it was “assured by counsel appearing for the respective parties that by the adjourned date, a specific affidavit indicating the progress made on the ground shall be submitted.”

Their joint appearance in the Chinese capital is being seen as a significant diplomatic gain for Xi, underlining his influence at a time of heightened global tensions.

Kim’s attendance, the first by a North Korean leader at a Chinese parade since 1959, highlights Beijing’s continued importance to Pyongyang, which relies heavily on China for trade and food imports. His visit also comes amid closer ties between Moscow and Pyongyang since the beginning of the Russia – Ukraine war.

The gathering provides Xi with diplomatic leverage ahead of expected talks with US President Donald Trump later this year, reports BBC. Washington and Beijing remain locked in negotiations over tariffs and trade, while Trump has signalled renewed interest in direct engagement with Kim.
