Bus blaze in Andhra: 19 passengers saved their lives by breaking window, jumping out; 11 dead

Kurnool, Oct 24: As many as 11 people were charred to death when a private bus caught fire after hitting a two-wheeler in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool in the early hours of Friday. As many as 19 people jumped to safety from the burning bus by breaking a window.

The bus belonging to a private travel operator was heading to Bengaluru from Hyderabad and had 40 people on board.

As many as 19 passengers came out of the vehicle by breaking windows of the Volvo bus of Vemuri Kaveri Travels. The accident occurred around 3.30 a.m. near Ullindakonda in Kurnool district, police said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Koya Praveen said a total of 21 passengers were rescued. Eleven of the deceased have been identified.

The death toll may go up as the missing passengers were feared dead.

As many as 11 passengers were shifted to a government hospital, while three others were being treated at private hospitals.

The bus began its journey from Hyderabad around 10.30 p.m., and when it was close to Kurnool on the National Highway 44 (NH-44), at around 3:30 am, a two-wheeler rammed into the bus. The motorbike got stuck under the belly of the bus and this is suspected to have caused the spark that ignited the horrific blaze.

Survivors said the two-wheeler was dragged by the bus for about 300 metres before coming to a stop. Most of the passengers were asleep at the time of the accident. One of the survivors said he woke up to the screams of “fire” and he along with some others broke the emergency window to jump to safety.

Akash, one of the survivors, said the bus was engulfed in flames within minutes and as it was an AC bus with fixed windows it was difficult to escape. Most of the passengers on board belong to Hyderabad.

By the time a fire engine rushed to the spot the bus was completely gutted. Police swung into action to shift the injured to hospitals.

Four members of a family were among the deceased. The deceased were identified as Golla Ramesh (35), Anusha (30), Manivata (10) and Manisha (12).

Russia’s response to a Tomahawk strike would be ‘serious, if not overwhelming’: Putin

Russia's response to a Tomahawk strike would be 'serious, if not overwhelming': Putin

Moscow, Oct 24: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia’s response to any potential Tomahawk strike on its territory would be “serious, if not overwhelming”.

Though, the US has not agreed to allow Ukraine the use of the missiles, the fact that Kyiv is trying to get permission to use them is “an attempt at escalation,” Putin told the media on Thursday.

“But if such weapons are used to strike Russian territory, the response will be very serious, if not overwhelming. Let them think about that,” he added.

Putin also vowed to continue “dialogue” despite US counterpart Donald Trump shelving a proposed summit.

The Russian President also spoke on his cancelled meeting with US President Donald Trump, which was initially planned to be taking place in Budapest, Hungary, in the coming weeks.

Emphasising on the importance of continued diplomacy to end the war in Ukraine, Putin on Thursday said: “Well, what can one always say? Dialogue is always better than confrontation, than disputes, or even more so than war.”

“That is why we have always supported the continuation of dialogue, and we continue to support it now,” he added.

“It would be a mistake for both me and the US President to approach this lightly and come away from this meeting without the expected result,” Putin said, emphasising that the meeting was originally proposed by the US side.

The Russian leader said Washington had proposed the summit but was now “postponed”.

Putin also dismissed Washington’s latest sanctions on Russia’s oil sector, calling them a futile attempt to strong-arm Moscow into compliance.

“No self-respecting country ever does anything under pressure,” Putin said, after the US imposed sweeping restrictions on Rosneft and Lukoil — Russia’s largest oil producers.

The sanctions were announced after the Kremlin rejected calls for an immediate ceasefire in its ongoing war with Ukraine.

Earlier, US Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said in an interview that Washington was “looking at” providing Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine in response to a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Tomahawk is a subsonic, long-range cruise missile designed for precision strikes against land targets, with an operational range of roughly 1,600–2,500 km.

The Tomahawk can be configured as a strategic weapon with a nuclear warhead, though it is commonly deployed in a conventional form for tactical strikes.

Tomahawks are typically launched from ships or aircraft, which program the missile before launch with target coordinates, routing, flight profile, and digital terrain maps. Strategic launch platforms also upload arming codes. The missile navigates using a combination of inertial and satellite navigation.

Putin said he had cautioned US President Trump that the sanctions could disrupt global energy markets and lead to rising oil prices worldwide.

“We said very clearly that this would affect global oil prices, including the US,” he added.

Meanwhile, Putin said on Thursday that the latest US sanctions targeting two major oil firms were “serious”, but not strong enough to significantly affect the economy.

The US on Wednesday hit Russia’s two biggest oil producers — Rosneft and Lukoil — with sanctions, the first against Russia since US President Donald Trump returned to office.

“They (sanctions) are serious for us, of course, that is clear. And they will have certain consequences, but they will not significantly impact our economic well-being,” Putin told reporters.

He added that the sanctions were an “unfriendly act” that “does not strengthen Russia-US relations, which have only just begun to recover”.

Trump attempted to foster ties with Russia at the start of his term but has become increasingly frustrated with Putin’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire, complaining that his peace talks with him were not going “anywhere”.

The Us President held off introducing new restrictions against Russia for months, but his patience snapped after plans for a fresh summit with Putin in Budapest collapsed.

Still, even after new sanctions and the summit’s postponement, Putin appeared to remain open to dialogue.

The US Treasury Department said the measures were intended to “limit Russia’s ability to finance its aggression”.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the move, calling it a step that would “weaken the Kremlin’s capacity to wage war”.

Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday called the US sanctions against two Russian oil companies “counterproductive” and stressed that Moscow would not face any issue due to the sanctions as it has “strong immunity” to Western sanctions.

Commenting on US Treasury Department’s sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “We consider this step to be exclusively counterproductive,” Russia’s leading Tass news agency reported.

Zakharova’s statement comes after US President Donald Trump has imposed new sanctions on Russia, targeting its two largest oil companies, in his latest bid to end the conflict in Ukraine.

While meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said he hoped that the “war will be settled”.

Trump also noted his previous conversations with Russian President Putin had not led to any breakthroughs.

“Every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don’t go anywhere. They just don’t go anywhere. He’s fighting a war. He’s in a war. It’s two very competent sides, and that’s the way war is. You never know with war, but I would say that it’s time to make a deal,” he emphasised.

Trump, on Tuesday, cancelled his proposed meeting with Putin in Budapest in Hungary, saying he doesn’t “want to have a wasted meeting”.

“We cancelled the meeting with President Putin. It just didn’t feel right to me. It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get. So, I cancelled it, but we’ll do it in the future,” he noted.

India lauds Trump’s role in achieving Gaza peace deal

Global community must ensure LeT, JeM, no longer exploit Afghan territory for terror activities: India

United Nations, Oct 24: India has lauded US President Donald Trump’s role in achieving the landmark Gaza agreement and said it has created momentum for peace in the region.

“The landmark initiative of the United States has generated diplomatic momentum towards peace, and all parties must adhere to their obligations in this regard,” India’s Permanent Representative to UN, P. Harish, said on Thursday.

Participating in a UN Security Council debate on the Middle East, he said, “India would also like to place on record its appreciation for the United States, and especially President Donald Trump, for playing an instrumental role in forging the agreement.”

India participated in the Gaza Peace Summit at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on October 13 and welcomed the signing of the landmark pact, he added.

Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to the ceremony, India was represented by External Affairs Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh.

The agreement is centered on a 20-point plan for peace and reconstruction for Gaza that Trump devised, and with cajoling and coercion got Israel and Hamas to agree to the peace deal.

Harish also commended Egypt and Qatar, who acted as intermediaries in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas, for their role in getting the peace agreement through.

“It is India’s hope that the positive diplomatic momentum that has been generated would lead to lasting peace in the region,” he said.

“Now is the time for all parties to support ongoing peace efforts, rather than to derail them,” Harsh said, adding that New Delhi “remains firmly opposed to any unilateral moves by parties concerned”.

“The short-term gains of the recent diplomatic outcomes must pave the way for medium- to long-term political commitments and practical action on the ground towards the realisation of a Two-State solution” under which Israel and an independent Palestine nation will co-exist in peace.

He reiterated India’s “unwavering support to the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, national independence, and sovereignty”.

Harish said that an independent Palestine state should also be economically viable.

Programmes that include “economic frameworks and mechanisms” for social development, investment, and employment are needed,” he added.

According to estimates, about 80 per cent of the homes in Gaza have been destroyed in Israeli attacks.

“Aid is essential in the short term for rehabilitation and reconstruction”, and international support is needed for this, Harish said.

India has sent more than $170 million in aid to Palestine, including projects worth $40 million that are in various stages of development, he added.

In the last two years, India sent 135 metric tons of medicines and supplies to Palestine, he said.

Removal of Maharaja Pratap Singh’s name from JMC website condemnable: Ajatshatru Singh

Jammu, Oct 23: Senior BJP leader and former minister  MK Ajatshatru Singh has strongly condemned the removal of the name of Maharaja Pratap Singh from the official website of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).

Expressing deep anguish over the development, the former minister said that such an act is not merely a clerical error but a disrespect to the glorious Dogra history and a direct insult to the Maharaja who gave Jammu its civic identity. “Flood ke baad paani nahi, barish ke baad bijli nahi — ye sab toh sab jaayenge, but this deliberate erasure of our heritage is unacceptable,” he remarked.

In a press release issued here today, MK Ajatshatru Singh reminded that the Jammu Municipal Committee (now Corporation) was founded in 1886 by Maharaja Pratap Singh, whose visionary leadership laid the foundation of modern civic administration in Jammu. “It was Maharaja Pratap Singh who institutionalised urban governance in Jammu, giving shape to its civic and infrastructural framework. To remove his name from the official records is to deny the very roots of Jammu’s municipal identity,” he stated.

The senior BJP leader asked the Jammu Municipal Corporation and the UT Administration to immediately rectify this grave mistake by restoring Maharaja Pratap Singh’s name and rightful acknowledgment on all official platforms and records.

He further said that the Dogra legacy must be preserved and respected, as it represents centuries of sacrifice, service, and state-building that shaped Jammu and Kashmir. “It is unfortunate that even in Jammu, where the Dogra rulers are revered, their contributions are being sidelined. This is not acceptable to any self-respecting Dogra,” he said.

Ajatshatru Singh said, “The present government must ensure that the historical truth is upheld and the credit of founding the Jammu Municipal Committee remains forever with Maharaja Pratap Singh—the great Dogra ruler who gave Jammu its civic soul.”

Centre proposes mandatory labelling of AI-generated content to curb deepfakes

Centre proposes mandatory labelling of AI-generated content to curb deepfakes

New Delhi, Oct 23: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has proposed amendments to the Information Technology Rules to make the clear labelling of content generated through artificial intelligence (AI) mandatory, LiveLaw.in reported.

The proposed changes aim to strengthen accountability among major social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter) to tackle the growing threat of deepfakes and deceptive digital content. According to the draft rules released on Thursday, the amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 introduce the concept of “synthetically generated information.” This refers to content that is artificially or algorithmically created, modified, or altered using a computer resource in a manner that makes it appear authentic.

The Ministry warned that deepfake audio and video content, as well as other misleading material circulating online, can cause serious harm, including damaging reputations, influencing elections, and enabling financial fraud. Under the proposed framework, intermediaries that provide tools or resources to create or modify synthetic content will be required to clearly label such information or embed a unique metadata identifier revealing its synthetic nature. For visual content, the label must cover at least 10% of the display surface, while for audio, it must be declared during at least 10% of the duration. Intermediaries must also ensure that such labelling or metadata cannot be removed or suppressed.

Significant social media intermediaries (SSMIs) like Meta, X, and YouTube will be required to obtain a declaration from users at the time of uploading content, confirming whether the material is synthetically generated.

They must also employ “reasonable and appropriate technical measures,” including automated tools, to verify these declarations. If synthetic content is detected, platforms must display a clear label or notice indicating that it has been algorithmically generated. The draft rules specify that intermediaries may be held liable for due diligence violations if they knowingly permit, promote, or fail to act upon misleading synthetic content. The proposed Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2025 are currently open for public consultation. Feedback and suggestions can be submitted via email to itrules.consultation@meity.gov.in by November 6, 2025, before the amendments are finalised.

Underscoring the importance of vigorous contact tracing, Dulloo called for strengthening the network of ASHA workers to facilitate home visits and ensure ‘at-home’ care and counselling, thereby improving adherence to treatment and recovery outcomes.

The Chief Secretary held an extensive interaction with Deputy Commissioners to review the availability, utilization, and functionality of diagnostic equipment, screening mechanisms, and treatment facilities across all districts. He urged the district administrations to optimise resources, ensure uninterrupted supply of medicines, and strengthen coordination between district health teams and field functionaries for timely service delivery.

He also called for annual analysis of TB-related deaths to determine underlying causes and implement corrective measures to prevent avoidable fatalities. He directed the Health Department to ensure integration of patient records with the Sehat App and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) portal for seamless record management and monitoring.

The Chief Secretary further reviewed the action taken on directions issued in earlier meetings, emphasizing their strict and time-bound implementation to secure better outcomes under the Abhiyan.

Providing updates, Secretary H&ME, Dr. Syed Abid Rashid Shah, informed that significant progress has been achieved in strengthening TB surveillance, infrastructure, and early diagnostic systems. He stated that J&K has achieved 100% notification of TB cases, with 11,499 cases reported, while 92% of the vulnerable population has been screened placing the Union Territory among the best-performing regions in the country.

He added that all District TB Centres (DTCs) are adequately equipped to meet screening and treatment targets, and efforts are underway to ensure patient adoption by doctors and regular home visits by ASHA workers for sustained patient engagement.

Mission Director, NHM, Baseer-Ul-Haq Chaudhary, informed that 22.09 lakh individuals from the vulnerable population have been screened for TB so far, with a presumptive testing ratio of 4,636 per lakh population in J&K. A total of 5.59 lakh people have been tested.

He emphasized that through sustained awareness, technological integration, and compassionate outreach by medical professionals, Jammu and Kashmir can emerge as a model TB-free region in the country.
