Muttaqi’s Deoband visit seen as shift in South Asia’s Islamic diplomacy

Muttaqi’s Deoband visit seen as shift in South Asia’s Islamic diplomacy

New Delhi, Oct 11: Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to the Darul Uloom Deoband seminary is being viewed as a defining moment in South Asia’s Islamic diplomacy, with observers describing it as a symbolic move to reshape Kabul’s religious and geopolitical orientation.

According to a News18 report, the visit underscores Afghanistan’s intent to reclaim its spiritual roots and distance its Islamic narrative from Pakistan’s clerical establishment.

During his visit, Muttaqi hailed Deoband as the “Madre Ilm” (Mother of Knowledge), noting that Afghanistan continues to draw moral and spiritual guidance from the Indian seminary, which has long inspired Afghan ulema. He stressed that a genuine Deobandi embodies moderation, unity of the Ummah, and peaceful coexistence—values that stand in contrast to extremism carried out in the name of Islam. Muttaqi also expressed gratitude to Indian scholars for preserving the Deobandi intellectual tradition.

A senior Deobandi cleric welcomed Muttaqi “as a student returning to his school,” remarking that ilm (knowledge) and akhlaq (character)—not warfare—represent the true Deobandi ethos. He underlined the shared spiritual lineage between India and Afghanistan and argued that dialogue and scholarship are the most effective tools to bridge regional divides and restore aman aur insaaf (peace and justice).

Analysts cited by News18 believe the visit reflects a deeper geopolitical recalibration by the Taliban regime. For decades, the movement was ideologically tied to Pakistan’s Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akora Khattak—often dubbed the “University of Jihad.” Muttaqi’s outreach to India’s Deoband, they note, signals Kabul’s effort to assert an independent Islamic identity and shift its spiritual centre of gravity away from Rawalpindi’s influence.

Are small-cap funds the hidden gems of mutual fund investments?

0
Are small-cap funds the hidden gems of mutual fund investments?

Small-cap funds are mutual funds that invest at least 65% of the corpus in companies ranked outside the top 250 (251st onwards) by market capitalisation. These businesses are smaller in scale, less established, and often operate in emerging sectors of the economy.

For many investors, they remain an unfamiliar territory compared to large-cap and mid-cap funds that are more popular. Still, their potential to offer strong growth has led to a growing discussion: could these funds be the hidden gems of mutual fund investments? The answer leans strongly towards yes, and here are the 5 qualities that make them valuable for long-term wealth creation.

1. Higher growth potential

A small-cap fund offers higher growth potential since it invests in younger, more agile companies. Unlike large, established corporations that already dominate their markets, small companies have more scope for expansion. These businesses can quickly adapt to fresh trends and innovate. They may even transform into tomorrow’s mid or large caps.

This agility and capacity for significant growth are reasons why these funds are considered “hidden gems.” For investors, getting in early on these companies can lead to multi-bagger returns, a rare opportunity in more mature asset classes.

2. Market inefficiencies create openings

Small-cap companies do not receive the same level of attention as the top players in the market. Coverage exists, yet it is less intense compared with large firms. This limited coverage sometimes results in share prices that do not fully reflect the company’s actual potential.

A skilled fund manager can analyse financial performance, industry trends, and management quality to identify businesses with room to grow. These occasional gaps between price and value create opportunities that investors in small-cap funds may benefit from.

3. Higher volatility, higher returns

Small-cap funds are known for their sharp ups and downs. Their share prices can swing more than those of large-cap firms since smaller businesses often react faster to economic changes, competition, or changes in demand.

This volatility may look unsettling in the short term. However, over longer periods, it can work in an investor’s favour. When market cycles turn positive, small companies often capture growth opportunities faster than larger peers. Those who invest in small-cap funds and remain committed through these fluctuations have a higher possibility of experiencing higher returns in the long run.

4. Broadening portfolio diversification

A big advantage of small-cap funds is diversification. Large-cap funds often cluster around established sectors like banking, energy, or technology. Small caps represent a wide mix of emerging industries and innovative business models that are still finding their place in the economy.

By holding them in a mutual fund portfolio, investors get exposure to companies that can move differently across market cycles. This balance helps lower overreliance on large names and can offer new growth opportunities.

5. Opportunity for wealth creation through SIPs

Small-cap funds might look risky in the short term, but discipline through a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) turns that volatility into an advantage. By investing fixed amounts regularly, you purchase more units when prices dip and fewer when they rise. Over time, this approach (rupee-cost averaging) helps smooth out market swings and builds long-term wealth. Look at how to set up an SIP effectively:

  • Pick the right fund
  • Choose an affordable sum you can sustain monthly
  • Fix a consistent debit date for automated investing
  • Link your bank account for smooth auto-debit transactions
  • Track performance against benchmarks and adjust if needed

When paired with consistency, small-cap SIPs can transform short-term volatility into long-term wealth.

To sum up

Small-cap funds prove that hidden gems exist in mutual fund investing. They capture businesses with strong growth potential, provide exposure to dynamic sectors, and benefit from India’s expanding economy. While volatility remains part of the journey, a disciplined SIP approach helps investors hedge price swings and build wealth steadily.

For investors seeking variety and future-focused opportunities, small-cap funds can become valuable wealth creators. They provide growth and stability together, which makes them an important part of any carefully planned long-term portfolio.

India-Kabul to expand trade relations, Afghan traders likely to visit Delhi

India-Kabul to expand trade relations, Afghan traders likely to visit Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 11: As New Delhi strengthens its relations with the Taliban establishment in Kabul, FM Amir Khan Muttaqi who is one a week-long visit to the capital, is likely to push for better trade cooperation between the two countries.

According to sources aware of the matter, more than two dozen Afghan traders are likely to visit the capital on Monday and will meet the FM Muttaqi.

“These traders are likely to visit New Delhi on Monday. They will meet the FM Muttaqi, and it is being seen as a major push from the Kabul side to expand trade relations, in the domain of dry fruits, pharmaceuticals, public infrastructure and many others,” an official said.

At the restrictive press conference in the Afghan Embassy premises in New Delhi on Friday, Muttaqi backed trade through the Chabahar port route and called for opening the India-Pakistan Attari-Wagah border.

Pakistan does not allow India to export to Afghanistan via the land route, and hence, India uses the Chabahar port in Iran for trade and commerce.

Notably, FM Muttaqi, during the meeting with EAM Jaishankar at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi, invited Indian companies to explore mining opportunities in Afghanistan, which are believed to host valuable minerals like copper, iron, lithium, gold and others.

Last year as well, the Taliban was particularly seeking Indian investments in major mining ventures, including the Khawja Gor Gor Coal project in Badghis province, the Abgarmak Copper project in Herat, the Pashti Koh Iron project in Herat, the Qale Zal Gold project in Kunduz, the Lead & Zinc Block in Ghor, the marble blocks in Wardak, the Chehal Kan Shahr Gold project in Badakhshan among many others but it did not lead to any successful result.

These developments come at a time when the relations between Kabul and Islamabad are at their lowest.

On Thursday, when Muttaqi arrived in Delhi, Pakistan conducted a cross-border operation targeting TTP camps in Kabul.

The timing of this bombing was seen as an open threat to the Taliban leadership in Kabul for their outreach to New Delhi.

Jaishankar meets US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor

New Delhi, Oct 11: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday held talks with US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor amid continuing strains in the India-US relations over Washington’s imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports.

Gor, accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, is on a six-day visit to New Delhi, days after the Senate confirmed his appointment as the US envoy to India.

“Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance,” Jaishankar said on social media.

“Wish him the best for his new responsibility,” he said.

Gor also met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

“They had a productive exchange on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and its shared priorities. FS wished Amb-designate Gor all success for his assignment,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on ‘X’.

The relations between New Delhi and Washington have been reeling under severe stress after US President Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent, including 25 per cent additional duties for India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.

India described the US action as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”.

However, the recent phone conversations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Trump have raised hopes for a positive outcome from the ongoing negotiations for the trade deal.

India and the US recently resumed negotiations for the trade deal after a brief hiatus of a few weeks.

Gor, the White House personnel director and a loyal member of Trump’s inner circle, was nominated as the next American envoy to India in August.

In his reaction, Gor said he was “beyond grateful” to Trump for showing “incredible trust and confidence” in nominating him to be his next US ambassador to India and the special envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.

The US Senate this week has confirmed the appointment.

American officials said Gor will not present his credentials as the US envoy during his stay in New Delhi this time.

Srinagar, Oct 11: The Muthida Majlis Ulema (MMU) led by Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam on Saturday appealed to hotel and restaurant owners across Kashmir to stop buying, selling, or serving slaughtered chickens and meat products imported from outside Jammu and Kashmir, urging them instead to procure such items locally.

The appeal came during a meeting of the Muthida Majlis Ulema held in Srinagar under the chairmanship of Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, where senior clerics and scholars discussed concerns over the quality and source of slaughtered poultry being supplied to the Valley.

Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said the decision was taken after receiving several complaints and inputs suggesting that much of the slaughtered chicken arriving from outside the Union Territory did not meet halal standards.

“Hoteliers have been appealed to stop buying, supplying, and selling slaughtered chickens to customers. Restaurant owners and those associated with the hospitality sector are advised to stop procuring slaughtered chickens from outside sources and instead purchase poultry locally,” the Grand Mufti said.

He further emphasised that it was the collective responsibility of the community to ensure that only halal meat and poultry are consumed and served in the Valley. “Stop buying haram meat and procure meat and chicken locally. This is both a religious and ethical responsibility,” he said.

The meeting also urged local authorities to monitor the poultry and meat supply chains to ensure adherence to Islamic dietary laws and to support local producers engaged in the halal food sector.[KNT]

LG Sinha inaugurates Kashmir Literature Festival, praises valley’s cultural spirit

Srinagar, Oct 11: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday inaugurated the Kashmir Literature Festival at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), Srinagar, calling literature the “soul of a nation” and writers the “engineers of human consciousness.”

Addressing a large gathering of writers, poets, scholars, students, and thinkers from across the country and abroad, LG Sinha said that literature has the power to awaken minds and guide societies toward wisdom and harmony.

“Engineers build the structures of progress, but writers build the structures of thought. Through their words, they awaken society’s mind, inspire imagination, and guide generations toward wisdom and harmony,” he said.

Quoting ancient Indian texts, the LG said that India’s civilizational ethos has always placed great value on knowledge and scholarship. “A scholar gets respect in the country and all over the world,” he said as per KNS, referring to Vedic verses that celebrate learning and friendship with scholars.

Drawing a personal connection, Sinha said though he studied engineering and not literature, he found a strong link between the two. “When I worked on mathematical and scientific designs, I aimed to create solutions that could accelerate social development. Similarly, a writer creates structures of words that stimulate social consciousness and inspire progress,” he noted.

The LG further said that writers and thinkers are like gardeners who choose words as carefully as flowers, shaping the emotional and intellectual landscape of a nation. He stressed that literature provides society with imagination, empathy, and moral clarity values essential for nation-building.

Recalling his own literary influences, Sinha mentioned British author Mabel Collins and her 1885 work Light on the Path, which he said deeply inspired him. Quoting from the book, he said, “Kill out the desire for personal gain, but work with selfless dedication and love for your work.” He described the message as a timeless call for humility and service.

The Lieutenant Governor also narrated a parable about an emperor advised by a wise writer to remember the phrase “This too shall pass,” underscoring the importance of equanimity in both joy and sorrow.

“Whether in happiness or in pain, this message reminds us of life’s balance and the enduring power of words,” Sinha said.

The event, held at SKICC’s main auditorium overlooking the Dal Lake, was attended by prominent literary figures, cultural personalities, and students. The two-day festival aims to celebrate Kashmir’s centuries-old literary and philosophical traditions while promoting dialogue between regional, national, and global voices.

The festival features book launches, poetry readings, interactive sessions, and discussions on themes including “Kashmir: The Cradle of Civilization” and “Literature as a Force for Unity.”

The LG commended the organizers for bringing together distinguished minds and said such festivals reaffirm Kashmir’s identity as a land of wisdom, culture, and creativity.

“Literature reflects the heartbeat of a nation. It is through the words of writers that civilizations evolve, heal, and find their purpose,” he said.(KNS)
