Congress to raise issue of “missing statues” of Mahatma Gandhi with govt: Karra

Srinagar, Oct 06: Member of the Legislative Assembly from Central Shalteng and President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Tariq Hameed Karra, on Monday conducted a comprehensive tour of his constituency to assess the prevailing developmental scenario and address public grievances.

Karra held an on-the-spot meeting with the concerned officers of various departments and directed them to ensure swift action on issues affecting locals, particularly in vulnerable and flood-prone zones. He emphasized that development works should be implemented with urgency and accountability to prevent hardships faced by people during adverse weather conditions.

During his tour, the Congress leader expressed concern over the poor drainage and waterlogging problems that continue to trouble several areas, especially Bemina and its adjoining localities. “Central Shalteng, particularly Bemina, being a low-lying area, remains highly susceptible to inundation during heavy rains or flood-like situations. These localities must receive special attention to avert any untoward incidents,” Karra told officers accompanying him.

He further urged the administration to stay prepared for any eventuality and to prioritize works related to flood management, road maintenance, and drainage restoration ahead of the winter season. Karra also interacted with locals who apprised him of their day-to-day difficulties and urged timely redressal of their concerns.

The JKPCC President assured that he would continue to monitor the progress of ongoing projects and maintain close coordination with the administration to ensure that developmental needs of the constituency are effectively met. [KNT]

High-mast light at Sonamarg Bypass defunct, drivers urge immediate repair

Ganderbal, Oct 06: The high-mast light installed by the construction company engaged in building the Zojila Tunnel along the Sonamarg Bypass road has gone defunct, causing serious inconvenience to travelers and truck drivers during nighttime hours. The facility, erected at a cost of over one lakh rupees, was meant to ensure smooth vehicular movement and enhance safety in the area.

Drivers said that the high-mast light was installed by the tunnel construction company to illuminate the stretch frequently used by heavy vehicles and passenger traffic on the Srinagar–Leh highway. The area also accommodates a truck yard where several drivers halt overnight during their journeys to and from Ladakh.

However, the light has reportedly stopped functioning for several days, plunging the area into darkness once evening sets in. Drivers said the lack of illumination poses difficulties in vehicle movement and increases the risk of accidents. “It becomes extremely difficult to move safely during the night, especially with wild animals often crossing the road,” a driver said.

The truckers and other road users have appealed to the concerned construction company to restore the high-mast light at the earliest. Locals also urged authorities to ensure regular maintenance of such essential infrastructure, particularly along the Sonamarg–Zojila stretch, which remains vital for both civilian and logistics traffic throughout the year. Nomination process begins for RS elections

ECI appoints observers for vacant Budgam, Nagrota seats

Srinagar, Oct 06: The nomination process for four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu & Kashmir began on Monday with the issuance of three separate notifications by the Election Commission of India (ECI), outlining the timetable for the polls.

The notifications were issued after the President of India called upon the elected members of the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir to elect members to the Upper House of Parliament.

According to the notifications issued by the Election Commission of India, the poll body announced that October 13, 2025, is the last date for filing nominations, while scrutiny of nominations will take place on October 14.

Candidates can withdraw their nomination forms until October 16, the poll body stated.

The ECI has fixed October 24, 2025, as the date on which polling shall take place, if necessary, with counting scheduled for the same day.

Three separate elections are being held for the four seats. While two separate elections will be conducted for the first and second seats, a combined election will be held for the remaining two seats.

As previously reported by KNO, the National Conference-Congress alliance is expected to comfortably secure three seats, while the BJP is in a strong position to win the fourth.

The BJP is in a commanding position to win the seat, given arithmetic in the House. There are seven independent members in the House who didn’t contest Assembly elections on ticket of any registered or recognised party and are not required to show their votes to polling agents.

It is worthwhile to mention that the provisions of the Tenth Schedule, including the anti-defection law, do not apply to Rajya Sabha elections. Therefore, political parties cannot issue a whip to their members for these elections—(KNO)

Pegasus row: What's wrong if country using spyware against terrorists? SC asks

New Delhi, Oct 06: The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Centre and Union Territory of Ladakh on a plea filed by Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J Angmo challenging the climate activist’s detention under the National Security Act, and seeking his immediate release.

However, a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria refused to pass any order on providing grounds of detention to Wangchuk’s wife and posted the matter for hearing on October 14.

Give up Gaza or face “complete obliteration”: Trump warns Hamas

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington DC, Oct 06: US President Donald Trump has warned Hamas of “complete obliteration” if the group insists on taking control over Gaza and blocks progress on his proposed ceasefire deal, CNN reported.

According to CNN, Trump was responding to questions on his 20-point ceasefire plan when he made the remark. When asked directly over text message what would happen if Hamas insisted on staying in power, Trump said, “Complete Obliteration!”

This comes as high-stakes negotiations between Israel and Hamas are set to take place on Monday in Egypt. Trump sent his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and top West Asia negotiator Steve Witkoff to Cairo to lead US efforts, while a delegation from Israel is also in Egypt to finish negotiations

On being further pressed on Senator Lindsey Graham’s claim that Hamas had already rejected the plan by refusing to disarm, seeking full Palestinian control of Gaza, and tying hostage release to broader negotiations, Trump said, “We will find out. Only time will tell!!!”

Earlier this week, the president said Israel had agreed to the first withdrawal line under his ceasefire proposal. The plan, he said, includes a phased Israeli pullback, a hostage-prisoner exchange, and the disarmament of Hamas. Trump added that his administration is now awaiting Hamas’s confirmation, which would trigger an “immediate” ceasefire.

“After negotiations, Israel has agreed to the initial withdrawal line, which we have shown to, and shared with, Hamas,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “When Hamas confirms, the Ceasefire will be IMMEDIATELY effective, the Hostages and Prisoner Exchange will begin, and we will create the conditions for the next phase of withdrawal, which will bring us close to the end of this 3,000 YEAR CATASTROPHE.”

Asked if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was aligned with the plan, Trump added, “Yes on Bibi.”

On Saturday, the president also said Israel had temporarily halted its strikes on Gaza, describing it as a critical step toward finalising the agreement.

Al Jazeera reported that at least 70 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air strikes the same day, including seven children between two months and eight years old. The strikes came soon after Trump urged Israel to “immediately stop bombing” Gaza after Hamas gave a positive initial response to his peace plan.

In a video posted on Truth Social on Friday, Trump described Hamas’s response as “a big day” and called the developments “unprecedented.” (ANI)

Dalit youth’s lynching in Raebareli heartbreaking, Rahul Gandhi spoke to victim’s family: Congress

Caste census result of Rahul Gandhi’s struggle: JKPCC

New Delhi, Oct 06: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has spoken to the father and brother of a Dalit youth who was lynched in Raebareli and stands in complete solidarity with them in this hour of unbearable grief, AICC media and publicity department head Pawan Khera has said.

In a post on X on Sunday, Khera said the horrific lynching is both heartbreaking and enraging.

“In his final moments, as he was being mercilessly beaten with sticks and belts, the deceased young man remembered his last hope – Shri Rahul Gandhi,” he said.

“For Rahul ji, who represents Raebareli in Parliament and considers its people his family, this tragedy is deeply wounding. He has personally spoken to the father and brother of the deceased and stands in complete solidarity with them in this hour of unbearable grief,” Khera said.

“He (Gandhi) has also expressed his profound concern over the dangerous normalisation of lynching in India, vowing that such violent elements must face their legal end. Justice must be served,” the Congress leader said.

Gandhi is currently on a four-nation tour of South America.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed said she came across a very disturbing video from Raebareli, where a Dalit youth, Hariom, was lynched and killed by a few criminals.

“When he repeatedly said ‘Rahul Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi’, those criminals claimed they were supporters of Yogi. This is what the double engine of Yogi and Modi has done in Uttar Pradesh. Their politics of hate is taking the lives of Dalits and the marginalised,” she said on X.

“Muslims are under attack, women are unsafe, and Dalits and OBCs are being targeted — no one is safe under the BJP government anywhere,” she said.

Police in Raebareli arrested five men on Saturday for allegedly lynching Hariom after mistaking him for a drone thief.

Police said Hariom, reportedly mentally unstable, was walking to his in-laws’ house in Dandepur Jamunapur when a mob surrounded him and accused him of being a member of a gang marking houses with drones for theft. He was beaten with belts and sticks and died soon after.
