After Op Sindoor, jointness of tri-series on top of govt agenda: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, Sep 30: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday praised the tri-services’ synergy during Operation Sindoor that enabled timely decisions and enhanced situational awareness, reiterating the government’s aim to further promote jointness.

Addressing a seminar organised by the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Subroto Park in Delhi, Rajnath Singh said, “Our government’s objective is to further promote Jointness and integration among the tri-services. This is not only a matter of policy but a matter of survival in the fast-changing security environment.”

“The evolving character of warfare, combined with the complex interplay of traditional and non-traditional threats, makes jointness a core operational necessity rather than a matter of choice,” he said.

“Jointness has become a fundamental requirement for our national security and operational effectiveness today. While each of our services possesses the capacity to respond independently, the interconnected nature of land, sea, air, space and cyberspace makes collaborative strength the true guarantor of victory,” he added.

The seminar on the theme ‘Fostering Greater Jointness – Synergy through Shared Learning in the domain of Inspection and Audits, Aviation Standards and Aerospace Safety’ underscores the necessity for India’s Armed Forces to embrace deeper integration to meet the demands of modern warfare and to maximise defence preparedness.

The Defence Minister highlighted the importance of IAF’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), working in unison with the Indian Army’s Akashteer and the Indian Navy’s Trigun, making a joint operational backbone during Operation Sindoor.

“During Operation Sindoor, the tri-services synergy produced a unified, real-time operational picture. It empowered commanders to take timely decisions, enhanced situational awareness, and reduced the risk of fratricide. This is the living example of jointness delivering decisive results and this success must become the benchmark for all future operation,” he said.

The Union Minister recalled the recent Combined Commanders’ Conference held in Kolkata where Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the importance of jointness and integration.

He stated that this reflects the government’s clear commitment to ensuring that the Armed Forces are not only among the best in the world in terms of values and traditions but also pioneers of future-ready systems.

Won’t compromise on statehood, will fight democratically, peacefully: CM Omar

Won't compromise on statehood, will fight democratically, peacefully: CM Omar

Anantnag, Sep 30: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday he won’t make an compromise on the issue of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and that his government’s struggle would remain rooted in democratic values and non-violence.

Addressing a gathering in Anantnag, CM Omar said he was prepared to protest but Ladakh situation in front of all and he would not accept “destruction, devastation and bloodshed” in the Valley.

“I will fight democratically and peacefully for the restoration of statehood. But I will not allow Kashmir to once again plunge into fire. Families here have already suffered enough and I do not want to see that cycle of grief return,” he said.

He also ruled out any political accommodation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to achieve the objective. “If inclusion of BJP in the government will help restore statehood, then take my resignation and make any other MLA the Chief Minister, but I will not compromise,” he said.

He recalled that after the last assembly elections, he too had the option of aligning with the BJP. “Like Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti did in 2015 and 2016, I could have chosen to form government with the BJP. Forming govt with the BJP perhaps statehood would have come sooner. But I chose the other path, to keep BJP away from power in J&K. We may have to wait longer, but I will never allow them to enter government through us,” he said.

Responding to voices demanding protests for statehood, CM Omar drew a comparison with Ladakh. “In Ladakh, when people came out, firing started within an hour. Here in Kashmir, they won’t even wait that long – bullets will rain within ten minutes. I don’t want Kashmiri families to collapse under grief again. We will continue our fight, but democratically and peacefully,” he stressed.

He also reminded people that Ladakh, which had initially welcomed the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, has now admitted that it was the constitutional protection which safeguarded their interests. “We had said it then, and we say it now, whatever happened on August 5, 2019, was wrong,” he said.

He said that his government’s struggle for statehood would remain rooted in democratic values and non-violence. “We are not against development or governance, but statehood is our identity. We will not rest until it is restored and that too without surrendering our principles,” he said—(KNO)

Old militant hideout busted in south Kashmir’s Kulgam

Old militant hideout busted in south Kashmir's Kulgam

Kulgam, Sept 30: Security forces on Tuesday claimed to have unearthed an old hideout used by militants in the dense forest belt of Laisoo Gudder in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The operation, carried out jointly by the Army’s 9 Rashtriya Rifles, 18 Battalion Central Reserve Police Force, and Special Operations Group of Kulgam Police, marked a fresh sweep in the ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the region.

Police sources said that specific intelligence inputs had suggested the possible presence of a cache or remnants of militant infrastructure in the forested area falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Devsar. Acting upon the lead, a search operation was launched early in the morning with multiple teams cordoning off the thick woods that stretch across Laisoo Gudder.

After several hours of combing operations, the joint teams came across traces of an abandoned structure concealed under layers of foliage and rocks. On closer examination, the site was identified as an old hideout, likely used by militants in earlier years. Security officials confirmed that the structure bore clear signs of having served as a makeshift shelter, though no fresh recoveries of arms or ammunition were immediately reported from the spot.

A senior police officer in Kulgam said the discovery was significant despite the absence of weapons. “Every hideout that we identify and dismantle reduces the tactical advantage for militants in these areas. This particular shelter had been abandoned for some time, but its very existence is a reminder that the forests were once exploited for militant movement and concealment. Our teams will ensure that no such facility remains usable,” the officer remarked.

The official added that forensic and technical teams had also visited the location to examine any leftover material, with efforts underway to establish when the hideout was last used and by whom. Security forces believe that even defunct shelters can sometimes provide clues about networks, routes, and logistical methods employed by militants. [KNT]

Saudi Arabia enter cricket: Announce partnership with ILT20

No bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan, but cricket team for Asia Cup won't be stopped: Sports Ministry

Dubai, Sep 30: Saudi Arabia has ventured into mainstream cricket for the first time, announcing a strategic partnership with International League T20 (ILT20) which would ensure that all six participating franchises in the event will have to absorb at least one player from the oil-rich kingdom.

Under the partnership, the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF) has sanctioned and licensed the DP World ILT20, which is approved by the Emirates Cricket Board, as an official T20 league (men and women) to host matches within Saudi Arabia in its forthcoming seasons.

“Saudi Arabia players will also have a direct pathway into the DP World ILT20. Notably, the DP World ILT20 Season 4 Player Auction, scheduled for Wednesday, will require each franchise to secure at least one player from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” read a statement from ILT20.

In the coming years, ILT20 matches will also be staged in Saudi Arabia, which hosted a cricket festival earlier this month “to create a new ecosystem” for the sport in the country. The ILT20 has featured reputed former players like Dwayne Bravo, Jonathan Trott and David Warner among others.

“We are very proud to announce our partnership with the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation. Saudi Arabia is a key part of the Gulf region, and its commitment to developing cricket is inspiring,” ILT20 Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni said.

Chairman of Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation (SACF) Prince Saud Bin Mishal Al-Saud said the partnership is a reflection of his commitment to develop cricket in his country.

“It also provides a platform for fan engagement within the Kingdom and opens up further avenues for developing the game across infrastructure and tourism…,” he added.

David White, CEO ILT20, called it a significant step to grow the game across the Gulf region.

The ILT20 Season 4 will begin on December 2 and will feature 34 matches, ending with the final on January 4, 2026.

Trump, Hegseth set to meet with hundreds of military leaders as speculation grows

Trump says Israel agreed on terms for 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, warns Hamas to accept deal

Washington, Sep 30: President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth plan to address hundreds of US military officials in person Tuesday after the Pentagon suddenly asked top commanders from around the world to convene at a base in Virginia without publicly revealing the reason.

The gathering at the Marine Corps base in Quantico near Washington has fuelled intense speculation about the purpose and value of summoning such a large number of generals and admirals to one place, with many stationed in more than a dozen countries that include conflict zones in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Meetings between top military brass and civilian leaders are nothing new. But experts say the scale of the gathering, the haste with which it was called and the mystery surrounding it are particularly unusual.

“The notion that the secretary is going to talk to the generals and give them his vision for running the department — and maybe also for strategy and organisation — that’s perfectly reasonable,” said Mark Cancian, a senior adviser with the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a retired Marine colonel.

“What’s mystifying is why it’s on such short notice, why it’s in person and what else might be involved,” he said.

The uncertainty comes as the country faces a potential government shutdown this week and as Hegseth, who has hammered home a focus on lethality and what he calls the “warrior ethos,” has taken several unusual and unexplained actions, including ordering cuts to the number of general officers and firings of other top military leaders.

News about the abruptly scheduled meeting broke Thursday, and top Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed it but declined to release further details.

Trump didn’t seem to know about it when he was asked by reporters during an Oval Office appearance later that day. The president said he’ll “be there if they want me, but why is that such a big deal?”

A White House official said Sunday that Trump also will speak at the gathering. The president told NBC News that he and Hegseth would be “talking about how well we’re doing militarily, talking about being in great shape, talking about a lot of good, positive things.”

Vice President JD Vance argued last week that the media had turned it into a “big story” and that it was “not particularly unusual that generals who report to” Hegseth are coming to speak with him.

Italian Adm. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the chair of NATO’s Military Committee, described the meeting as unusual and told reporters Saturday after a NATO meeting in Riga, Latvia, that “as far as my 49 years of service, I’ve never seen that before.”

The lack of detailed information has prompted many in Washington to speculate about the meeting’s focus. Whatever it is, Michael O’Hanlon of the Brookings Institution said he suspects there will be a dramatic element that may be “as important as any substantive element.”

“Just the sheer scale makes you wonder what kind of meaningful interaction can occur,” said O’Hanlon, Brookings’ director of research for foreign policy. “And therefore it smacks more of theatrics or of trying to impose than of trying to exchange views.”

Bryan Clark, a senior fellow and director of the Center for Defense Concepts and Technology at the Hudson Institute, said he expects the meeting to centre on the Trump administration’s shift in defense policy. The US military is expected to focus less on Europe and Asia and more on the Northern Hemisphere, a change that breaks with decades of precedent, he said.

Hegseth has championed the military’s role in securing the US-Mexico border, deploying to American cities as part of Trump’s law enforcement surges, and carrying out strikes on boats in the Caribbean that the administration says targeted drug traffickers.

“I think they’re trying to set the tone, set the context, for these generals and admirals to say the strategy we have coming out is very different than what you’re used to — we need you to all be on board with it,” Clark said.

Video teleconferencing across the world is difficult because leaders are spread across time zones, Clark said. Forcing them to attend the meeting in person will drill the point home.

“It’s a way of demonstrating that this is important,” Clark said.

BJP Chief Sat Sharma blames opposition for Ladakh violence, says NC playing “hide and seek” with frequent transfers

Bandipora, Sept 30: Jammu and Kashmir BJP President Sat Sharma on Tuesday accused the Opposition of fuelling the recent unrest in Ladakh, insisting that the people of the Himalayan region have always yearned for peace.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a BJP exhibition, Sharma directly blamed Opposition parties, particularly the National Conference, for political mismanagement and public dissatisfaction. “The violence in Ladakh is not reflective of the people’s aspirations. Ladakhis have always wanted peace. It is the Opposition that is responsible for this situation,” Sharma said.

He lashed out at the National Conference government for what he termed “playing hide and seek” with the administration by frequently transferring officials instead of addressing governance challenges. “Frequent reshuffles cannot solve people’s problems. The government must prioritise development and service delivery rather than shuffling bureaucrats,” Sharma remarked.

Sharma was participating in a BJP exhibition where party leaders showcased the achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over the past decade.

“Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, far-flung areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have seen significant progress in connectivity, infrastructure, and access to welfare schemes. This is evidence of the government’s commitment to inclusive development,” Sharma told reporters.

Responding to questions about the demand for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, Sharma reiterated that the assurance had already been given by the Prime Minister and would be fulfilled in due course. “The Prime Minister has already made it clear that statehood will be restored at the right time. The BJP is fully committed to delivering on this promise,” he said.

He also pointed to infrastructure as a central priority for the BJP, saying that the long-pending demand for the Bandipora–Srinagar national highway project would be taken up on priority. “Connectivity is the backbone of development. The Bandipora–Srinagar highway demand is genuine, and the BJP will ensure that it gets the attention it deserves,” Sharma noted. [KNT]

Gold reaches record high, poised for best month in 14 years

Gold reaches record high, poised for best month in 14 years

Mumbai, Sep 30: The price of gold reached a record high on Tuesday, on track for its largest monthly surge in 14 years amid concerns over a potential US government shutdown and rising expectations for further Federal Reserve rate cuts.

The price of yellow metal has risen 11.4 per cent so far in September, on track for its best month since August 2011 when it rose 15 per cent boosted by safe haven demand.

The price of 24-carat gold (10 gram) rose to a new high of Rs 1,15,450 on Tuesday, according to data published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA).

US gold futures for December delivery rose 0.4 per cent to $3,872. US President Donald Trump and his Democratic opponents appeared to make little progress at a White House meeting aimed at heading off a government shutdown that could disrupt a wide range of services as early as Wednesday.

The US Labour Department announced it will halt economic data releases, including the September jobs report, in the event of a partial government shutdown closing down its statistics agency.

Recent economic data has bolstered expectations for additional easing by the Federal Reserve.

Traders are pricing in an 89 per cent likelihood of a 25-basis-point cut at the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting, as reported by CME Group’s FedWatch tool.

St. Louis Federal Reserve President Alberto Musalem said he was open to further rate cuts but the Fed must be cautious and keep rates high enough to continue to lean against inflation.

Gold has outperformed Indian equities for the fourth consecutive Diwali-to-Diwali cycle, continuing a trend where the yellow metal has outperformed equities in seven of the last eight years.

Silver also outperformed Indian equities for the third consecutive year, driven by industrial demand from solar panel manufacturing, semiconductors, and electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, analysts say that bullion continues to receive support from robust central bank purchases and sustained inflows into ETFs. The Fed Chair’s cautious remarks on inflation, the labour market and future rate cuts could act as a cap on bullion’s gains.

Investors are awaiting US data on job openings, private payrolls, the ISM manufacturing index, and Friday’s non-farm payrolls report for insights into the economy’s trajectory.

Rescuers run oxygen to survivors in Indonesia school building collapse that buried dozens

Rescuers run oxygen to survivors in Indonesia school building collapse that buried dozens

Indonesia, Sep 30: Rescuers ran oxygen and water to students trapped in the unstable concrete rubble of a collapsed school building in Indonesia, as they desperately worked to free survivors Tuesday morning more than 12 hours after the structure fell. At least one student was killed, dozens were injured and 65 were presumed buried in the rubble.

Rescue workers, police and soldiers digging through the night pulled out eight weak and injured survivors more than eight hours after the collapse at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in the East Java town of Sidoarjo. Rescuers saw additional bodies, indicating the death toll was likely to rise.

Families of the students gathered at hospitals or near the collapsed building, anxiously awaiting news of their children. Relatives wailed as they watched rescuers pull a dusty, injured student from the buried prayer hall.

A notice board at the command post set up in the boarding school complex listed 65 students as missing as of Tuesday morning. They are mostly boys in grades seven to 11, between the ages of 12 and 17.

“Oh my God… my son is still buried, oh my God please help!” a mother cried hysterically upon seeing her child’s name on the board, followed by the cries of other parents whose relatives had suffered a similar fate.

“Please, sir, please find my child immediately,” cried a father, holding the hand of one of the rescue team members.

Heavy slabs of concrete and other rubble and unstable parts of the building hampered search and rescue efforts, said Nanang Sigit, a search and rescue officer who lead the effort. Heavy equipment was available but not being used due to concerns that it could cause further collapse.

“We have been running oxygen and water to those still trapped under the debris and keeping them alive while we work hard to get them out,” Sigit said. He added that rescuers saw several bodies under the rubble but were focused on saving those who were still alive.

Several hundred rescuers were involved in the effort and had equipment for breathing, extrication, medical evacuation and other support tools.

The students had been performing afternoon prayers in a building that was undergoing an unauthorised expansion when it suddenly collapsed on top of them, provincial police spokesperson Jules Abraham Abast said.

Residents, teachers and administrators assisted injured students, many with head injuries and broken bones. Female students were praying in another part of the building and managed to escape, survivors said.

One male student, a 13-year-old boy, was killed and 99 other students were injured and taken to hospitals, some of them in critical condition, officials said.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the collapse. Abast said the old prayer hall was two stories but two more were being added without a permit.

“The old building’s foundation was apparently unable to support two floors of concrete and collapsed during the pouring process,” Abast said.
