Gold rebounds Rs 800 in Delhi markets as global tensions boost safe-haven demand

Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, Sep 19: Gold prices rebounded sharply by Rs 800 to Rs 1,14,000 per 10 grams in the national capital on Friday tracking firm global cues amid escalating geopolitical tensions and renewed trade frictions between the US and China.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, the yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 1,13,200 per 10 grams on Thursday.

In the local bullion market, gold of 99.5 per cent purity also increased by Rs 700 to Rs 1,13,500 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). The precious metal had settled at Rs 1,12,800 per 10 grams in the previous trade.

“Gold traded positive in the last trading session of the week, with the overall sentiment for precious metals remaining bullish. This optimism is driven by several bullish factors, including strong inflows into exchange-traded funds this year, and central banks actively purchasing gold.

“Meanwhile, expectations for additional interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) before the end of 2025, and a persistent demand for safe investments due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and trade-related issues,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Additionally, silver prices extended gains for the second straight day by climbing Rs 500 to Rs 1,32,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday. The white metal had ended at Rs 1,31,500 per kg on Thursday, as per the association.

Traders said geopolitical uncertainties lifted safe-haven demand for the yellow metal, while renewed debates on the US Federal Reserve’s independence. However, a firm dollar acted as a headwind for the yellow metal and capped its gains.

On the global front, spot gold rose 0.18 per cent at USD 3,651.18 per ounce while spot silver went up nearly 1 per cent to USD 42.16 per ounce.

“Gold prices continue to hold firm, with focus now shifting to next week’s key US macroeconomic data, including GDP, manufacturing & services PMI, and PCE Price Index — which will guide further trend,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.

Renisha Chainani, Head — Research at Augmont, said, “Gold and silver prices came under pressure after the US Federal Reserve cut interest rates this week but signalled caution on the pace of future easing amid concerns over persistent inflation.

The Fed on Wednesday resumed rate cuts and left the door open for additional policy easing, but its tempered guidance cast doubts on how quickly further reductions would follow.

“The rate cut was in response to a weakening labour market in the US,” Chainani added.

ECI delists 474 more political parties, initiates action against 359 others for violating norms

New Delhi, Sep 19: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified its ongoing drive to clean up the electoral system by delisting another 474 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) for failing to contest elections continuously for six years.

The Commission, in a press note issued on Friday, said that with this second phase of action, a total of 808 RUPPs have been removed from the list since August 2025.

Earlier, on August 9, 334 RUPPs were delisted in the first phase of the exercise.

“In the first phase of this exercise, ECI had delisted 334 RUPPs on August 9, 2025. In continuation, in the second phase, ECI delisted 474 RUPPs on September 18, 2025, based on non-contestation in elections conducted by ECI continuously for 6 years. Thus, 808 RUPPs have been delisted in the last 2 months,” said the ECI in its press statement.

Under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, political parties are granted privileges such as election symbols and tax exemptions upon registration.

However, guidelines stipulate that if a party fails to contest any election for six consecutive years, it must be removed from the register.

The latest round of delisting, conducted on September 18, saw the maximum number of RUPPs axed from Uttar Pradesh (121), followed by Maharashtra (44), Tamil Nadu (42), and Delhi (40). States such as Punjab (21), Madhya Pradesh (23), Bihar (15), and Andhra Pradesh (17) also featured prominently in the list, amongst others.

In addition, the ECI has initiated proceedings against 359 other RUPPs that have failed to submit their annual audited accounts for three consecutive financial years (2021-22 to 2023-24) and have also not filed mandatory election expenditure reports despite contesting polls.

These parties span 23 states and Union Territories, with Uttar Pradesh (127), Tamil Nadu (39), and Delhi (41) accounting for the bulk of non-compliant organisations.

The Commission has directed Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) in the respective states and UTs to issue show-cause notices to the identified parties. Elecelecetion election election Hearings will be conducted before any final decision on delisting is made.

“In order to ensure that no party is unduly delisted, the CEOs of the respective States/UTs have been directed to issue show-cause notices to these RUPPs, following which, the parties will be given an opportunity through a hearing by the concerned CEOs,” it said.

“The ECI takes the final decision on delisting of any RUPP based on the reports of the CEOs,” the Commission clarified.

India showed how strong our retaliation can be: Rajnath on Operation Sindoor

"Op Sindoor led to increase in demand for our Indigenous defence products": Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, Sep 19: In carrying out Operation Sindoor following the dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam, India showed its enemy how strong the country’s retaliation can be, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Friday.

Singh also said that the coordination and courage with which India’s armed forces worked in executing the operation has proven that “victory is no longer an exception for us”.

The defence minister was interacting with a group of 1965 war veterans.

“We launched Operation Sindoor and showed the enemy just how strong our retaliation can be. The coordination and courage with which our team worked has proven that victory is no longer any exception for us. Victory has become our habit. And we must always maintain this habit,” Singh said.

The defence minister said following the Pahalgam terror attack, the government was determined to punish those involved in it.

“Whenever that incident comes to our mind, our heart becomes heavy. What happened there shook all of us to the core. But that incident could not break our morale.”

“Our prime minister has taken this resolve that this time the terrorists will be taught such a lesson that they would never have even imagined,” he said.

In response to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan.

The strikes triggered four days of intense clashes that ended with an understanding on stopping the military actions on May 10.

Singh also said that India as a nation has not been very fortunate in matters concerning its neighbours since Independence.

“Challenges of one kind or another have always come before us. But this is the specialty of us Indians, that we did not sit back accepting these challenges as fate. We worked hard and shaped our own destiny, created our own future,” Singh said.

Cente, J&K govt will bring farmers out of flood disaster with PM’s blessings: Chouhan

Cente, J&K govt will bring farmers out of flood disaster with PM's blessings: Chouhan

R S Pura (Jammu), Sep 19: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday visited flood-hit farms in the Basmati-rich R S Pura border area of Jammu and Kashmir and assured the affected farmers that with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s blessings, the central and state governments would take all necessary steps to restore their livelihoods and bring them out of this disaster.

Thousands of hectares of land in Jammu, particularly in R S Pura area, were badly affected due to floods triggered by heavy rains at the end of August.

“I have come here to tell you that the central government, together with the state government and with the blessings of the prime minister, will pull the farmers out of this disaster. Your pain is our pain, your suffering is our suffering,” Chouhan told farmers in Gram Badyal Brahmin in R S Pura.

Flanked by a high-level team of his ministry, Chouhan went from one area to another to inspect the crops and fields in the border belt and said, “I have come to say, do not shed tears. Whenever there were tears in your eyes, we too were pained.

“We will work hard together again. Not only Rajnath Ji or Amit Ji have come, but the teams of the central government have also reached out to you here.”

Asserting that he had come to share their pain, the minister said, “I have not come here as a minister to meet you formally. I have come as a humble servant. When a farmer’s crop is destroyed, it is not only the crop that is lost but his future and his children’s future too. We will pull you out of this disaster.”

Chouhan, who inspected fields where sand deposits had flattened standing crops, said teams from the Centre and the state had carried out surveys and would submit reports to determine losses. “We saw fields covered with layers of sand where crops once waved — vegetables, basmati, maize — everything has been buried,” he said.

“You can understand the concern of the prime minister. You know what he feels for you. Many ministers have already come here; recently Rajnath Singh Ji and Amit Shah Ji also came, and today, as the Agriculture Minister, I have come before you,” he said.

The minister said the Centre would not spare any effort to provide relief once assessment reports from central teams were received.

The team of the central government, which included officers from all departments, has come here and conducted a survey, he said, adding, “After conducting the survey, the team will give its report. The state government’s own report will also come. The assessment of losses is ongoing.”

He further added that after the report comes, the central government will leave no stone unturned in providing relief, because Jammu and Kashmir is the forehead of this country. “We will fight the trouble and bring you out of this crisis.”

He maintained that there are some tasks which the state government has to do, and in times of disaster, politics should not be done. “Our first task will be to take the farmers out of this trouble and restore their normal lives,” he added.

The Union minister said that the state government must decide that wherever sand has been deposited in people’s fields, that sand should be given to the person owning that land. “I will also discuss this with the chief minister. The sand should be given to the farmer himself, so that the farmer can sell it or remove it and once again make the land cultivable.”

Chouhan noted that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has provisions to remove sand and the Centre would coordinate with the state to implement that plan.

He also said he would discuss the matter with the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and other state officials to fast-track relief measures.

Acknowledging immediate relief already announced by the state, Chouhan said he was aware that the chief minister had released Rs 10 crore as prompt aid. He added that the state also had schemes and funds — amounting to Rs 2,499 crore as mentioned by authorities — which could be tapped for rehabilitation.

“I salute the people of Jammu and Kashmir. No one left any shortcomings in giving help.

“Some brought food, some brought blankets, some brought other things, and they all gave great help,” he said.

During the visit to Gram Badyal Brahmin,  Chouhan repeatedly urged farmers not to lose hope and stressed that both governments were working together to address the damage to crops and farmland caused by the recent floods and sand deposition.

Police attach drug peddlers’ property under NDPS Act in Handwara

Handwara, Sep 19: In its continuous drive against the menace of drug trafficking, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday attached a residential house belonging to a notorious drug peddler in Handwara.

He was identified as Mohd Akbar Malik, son of Mohd Abdullah Malik, resident of Guloora Langate.

A police official said that the action was taken in connection with Case FIR No. 31/2022 under sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act, registered at Police Station Handwara.

He said the attached property, identified as proceeds of crime derived from narcotic trade, has been seized under relevant legal provisions.

This decisive step reflects the firm commitment of Handwara Police to decimate drug peddling networks and dismantle their financial gains. By targeting and attaching properties acquired through illicit means, police aim to deliver a strong message of deterrence to those involved in drug trafficking, he added.

He further added that such actions not only curb the financial incentives behind the drug trade but also help in safeguarding the youth from falling prey to the menace of narcotics.

Handwara Police reiterated that pecuniary gains from drug trafficking will remain prime targets of law enforcement, leaving no room for such illicit activities to flourish.

PM Modi plants sapling gifted by British King on his 75th birthday

New Delhi, Sep 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday planted a Kadamb sapling, a gift to him from British King Charles III, on his 75th birthday, at his official residence.

The gift was inspired by Modi’s initiative — Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam — urging people to plant a tree as a tribute to their mother, the British High Commission’s office in India had said on September 17, the prime minister’s birthday.

The gift reflected the shared commitment of Charles III and Modi to environmental conservation, it had said.

An official video showed Modi planting the sapling at his residence, symbolising friendship and shared commitment to environmental sustainability.

During his visit to Britain in July, Modi had gifted the King a Sonoma tree as part of the same initiative. “Collaboration on climate and clean energy is a key pillar of the Commonwealth and the UK-India partnership as set out by the two PMs in Vision 2035,” the high commission had said.

Russia appeals global aviation agency’s decision blaming it for downing MH17 over Ukraine in 2014

Russia rejects possible deployment of NATO peacekeepers in Ukraine

Moscow, Sep 19: Russia has filed an appeal to the top United Nations court challenging the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s decision that blamed it for shooting down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine in 2014.

Moscow’s appeal submitted to the International Court of Justice, the UN’s main judicial organ, contested ICAO’s decision “on all grounds, including on grounds of jurisdiction, applicable law, factual findings and fatal procedural violations,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on late Thursday.

In May, the ICAO’s Council found Russia responsible for shooting down the MH17 on July 17, 2014, with the loss of 298 lives, marking the first time the global aviation body that represents 193 member states decided a dispute between governments.

The decision followed the 2016 conclusion by a Dutch-led international investigation that the Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur airliner was shot down from Ukrainian territory held by separatist rebels using a Buk missile system delivered from Russia. Moscow has denied any involvement in the MH17 tragedy.

The Russian Foreign Ministry charged that the Montreal-based global aviation agency had failed to carry out a “comprehensive, thorough and independent” international probe into the crash and relied instead on the “highly questionable conclusions” of the criminal investigation “carried out under the auspices of an interested party, the Netherlands, and on the basis of adulterated facts that were mostly provided by another interested party, Ukraine.”

“We hope that the International Court of Justice will take an entirely impartial stance on this high-profile case,” the ministry said.

Special court extends period of probe, accused’s custody

Pahalgam attack: Special court extends period of probe, accused's custody

Jammu, Sep 19: A special NIA court in Jammu has extended by 45 days — beyond the stipulated 90-day period — the custodial remand of two accused arrested for allegedly harbouring Pakistani terrorists involved in the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in April.

Special NIA judge Sandeep Gandotra on September 18 extended the investigation and remand period of Bashir Ahmad Jothat, who hails from Baisaran in Pahalgam and Parvaiz Ahmad from Batkote in Pahalgam.

The court held a prima facie case in favour of the extension of the remand and the investigation in view of the allegations, progress of investigation and pending forensic and DNA profiling reports.

“Accordingly, the extension for a period of 45 days is given to the investigating officer for the investigation of the case beyond the period of 90 days in favour of accused Bashir Ahmad Jothat and Parvaiz Ahmad with direction to complete the investigation of the case as soon as possible,” the order said.

The court directed the investigating officer to expedite and complete the investigation at the earliest. The 90-day period of remand for investigation as well as 10 days of judicial remand in respect of the two accused persons was due to expire on Friday.

After the expiry of the earlier remand, Parvaiz Ahmad Jothat and Bashir Ahmad Jothat were produced through virtual mode on September 18 before the court, which extended their period of investigation and remand to enable the NIA to carry out its probe, officials said.

The judge observed the plea for a 90-day extension of investigation was “well-founded” and “deserved acceptance” as the crucial stage of the probe.

The court noted several witness statements and forensic reports were pending.

“The report of DNA profiling of accused persons for comparison is also awaited. A prima facie case is made out for extension of remand and detention of accused beyond the stipulated period of 90 days,” it said.

Public Prosecutor Chandan Kumar Singh, representing NIA, had moved an application seeking extension of custody from 90 to 180 days under provisions of UAPA.

The prosecution argued that crucial evidence, including statements of witnesses, forensic reports, DNA profiling of seized blankets and shawls, and analysis of mobile data linked to Pakistani numbers, was still awaited. More suspects and overground workers were claimed to have surfaced during the probe, besides recoveries from a July 28 encounter, in which three terrorists were killed, pending expert examination.

“Some Pakistani numbers have been recovered from the mobile phones of the accused and their details have to be ascertained. Three terrorists have been killed and some recoveries have been made from them, which have been sent to NFSU Gandhinagar, the report of which is still awaited. Some arms and ammunition have also been recovered from the killed terrorists in the encounter on July 28, and the details of the FSL report are still awaited,” the prosecutor said.

Singh said some blankets, shawls and bedsheets were recovered at the behest of Jothat and Ahmad, and were sent to CFSL Chandigarh for extraction of DNA to be matched with the killed terrorists.

“The report of the same is still awaited,” he added. The case, re-registered by the NIA, pertains to the killing of tourists from a particular community at Baisaran meadow, Pahalgam, on April 22, 2025. The accused, Bashir Ahmad Jothat and Parvaiz Ahmad, were arrested on June 22 and have been in judicial custody at Amphalla Jail in Jammu.

According to the NIA, the accused disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack and confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated with the banned terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

The federal agency alleged that Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured the terrorists at a seasonal ”dhok” (hut) in Hill Park in Pahalgam before the April 22 attack that left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead and 16 others injured.

Trump says US ‘trying’ to retake key Afghan air base

Trump says Israel agreed on terms for 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, warns Hamas to accept deal

Washington, Sep 19: US President Donald Trump revealed that his administration is attempting to retake Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, asserting that it’s required due the proximity to China’s nuclear facilities.

“We’re trying to get it back, by the way. We’re trying to get it back because they need things from us. We want that base back. One of the reasons we want the base is, as you know, it’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” Trump said during his press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday at Chequers in the United Kingdom.

Trump made the plan public four years after the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan.

He once again criticised the previous Biden administration for the Afghanistan “disaster” and linked it to the conflict in Ukraine.

“He [Putin] would have never done what he did, except that he didn’t respect the leadership of the United States,” Trump added.

Bagram is located 44 kilometres north of the capital Kabul, and was the biggest US military base in Afghanistan and the military centre of the 20-year US occupation of the country.

It’s not the first time Trump has raised the issue of Bagram airbase. In March, he claimed that Beijing controlled it.

“We were going to get out, but we were going to keep Bagram, not because of Afghanistan but because of China, because it’s exactly one hour away from where China makes its nuclear missiles. And you know who’s occupying it right now? China,” he said.

At the time, the Taliban had rejected the allegations.

“Bagram is controlled by the Islamic Emirate (Taliban regime), not China. Chinese troops are not present here, nor do we have any such pact with any country,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the official broadcaster.

Ravinder Raina visits Sopore Fruit Mandi, assures fruit growers of BJP’s full support amid highway closure crisis

Ravinder Raina visits Sopore Fruit Mandi, assures fruit growers of BJP’s full support amid highway closure crisis

Sopore, Sept 19: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and J&K party president, Ravinder Raina, on Friday visited Asia’s second-largest fruit mandi in Sopore to take stock of the mounting crisis faced by fruit growers and dealers due to the prolonged closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway.

During his visit, Raina interacted with growers, dealers, and traders at the mandi and listened to their concerns regarding stranded fruit-laden trucks, delayed transportation, and heavy financial losses. The growers highlighted how the continuous highway blockade has left them distressed, with thousands of apple trucks halted for weeks, resulting in a sharp decline in fruit quality and market value.

Expressing solidarity with the growers, Raina assured them that their grievances would be raised at the highest levels of government. He reiterated that the BJP stands shoulder to shoulder with the fruit community in this difficult time and promised that immediate steps will be taken to ensure smoother passage of fruit consignments towards outside markets.

“Apple is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, and we will not allow growers to suffer due to administrative lapses. Necessary interventions will be made to safeguard the interests of traders and farmers,” Raina said while addressing the gathering. He further emphasized that “Govt is one, there is no dispute, LG and state govt jointly work for benefit of people,” underscoring that all efforts are being made in unison to address the crisis.

Fruit dealers, on their part, urged the government to prioritize perishable fruit trucks on the highway, demanding swift restoration of traffic movement. They expressed hope that the BJP leadership’s intervention will bring tangible relief to the sector, which is already grappling with challenges from erratic weather and fluctuating market prices.

The visit by the BJP leader is seen as significant, as it comes at a time when mounting frustration among growers has led to protests and calls for stronger government action. Raina’s assurance of solidarity has been welcomed cautiously, with growers waiting to see concrete results on the ground.

The fruit mandi of Sopore, considered the largest economic hub of North Kashmir, continues to mirror the anxiety of the valley’s growers, who remain on edge as every passing day adds to their losses.
