Srinagar, Sep 18: Police have registered a case in Bemina area of Srinagar after a woman alleged that she was violently assaulted by her drug-addicted son.

Officials said that a 52-year-old housewife, identified as Urfana, approached Police Station Batmaloo with a written complaint, stating that she was physically attacked by her son Adnan, aged around 22. Adnan, the son of Irshad Ahmad Bhat, a resident of New Colony Bemina, was accused of habitual drug abuse and violent behavior.

Police said that after receiving the complaint, cognizance was taken and a formal case was registered under FIR number 72/2025 at Police Station Batmaloo. The case has been booked under section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with section 307 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC), which pertains to attempt to murder. Investigation into the matter is underway.

The injured woman has been admitted to JVC Hospital Bemina for medical treatment. Her condition is being monitored by doctors, though officials did not immediately confirm the extent of her injuries.

Police sources told KNT that the case reflects a worrying pattern of rising drug addiction among youth in Srinagar, which in many instances has led to domestic violence and family disputes. In recent months, Srinagar police have repeatedly highlighted how substance abuse is fueling criminal behavior and destabilizing family structures in the city.

Locals in Bemina expressed concern over the incident and urged the administration to intensify its anti-drug campaign. “This is a shocking case. Drug addiction is destroying young lives and now tearing families apart. Strong measures are needed to curb this menace,” said a local resident.

Police confirmed that the investigation is being pursued on priority, and further action will be taken against the accused once preliminary evidence and medical reports are analyzed. [KNT]

Bihar govt to provide financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month to unemployed graduates: CM Nitish Kumar

Patna, Sep 18: The Bihar government will provide financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month to unemployed youths who have graduate degrees for a period of two years under ‘Mukhyamantri Nishchay Swayam Sahayta Bhatta Yojana’, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Thursday.

Earlier, this scheme was applicable for unemployed youths who had passed their intermediate exams only.

Kumar, in a post on X, said, “I am pleased to inform that under the state government’s seven resolves programme, the previously operated ‘Mukhyamantri Nishchay Swayam Sahayta Bhatta Yojana’ has now been expanded. Under this, the benefit of the Self-Help Allowance Scheme, which was previously being provided to intermediate-passed youth, has now been extended to unemployed graduate youth who have passed in arts, science, and commerce.

“Graduate-passed youth in the 20-25 age group who are not pursuing any studies anywhere, are striving for jobs/employment, do not have any self-employment, or have not obtained government, private, or non-government employment, will also be paid the Chief Minister’s Resolves Self-Help Allowance at the rate of Rs 1,000 per month for a maximum of two years.”

Assembly elections in Bihar are due later this year.

“I hope that the youth will use this assistance allowance to obtain necessary training and prepare for competitive examinations so that their future can be secured”, the CM wrote.

Since the formation of the new government in November 2005, providing government jobs and employment to more and more youth and empowering and enabling them has been our top priority, he said.

“You are aware that a target has been set to provide government jobs and employment to one crore youth in the next five years. In the coming days, a large number of new jobs and employment opportunities will be created in the government and private sectors. To achieve this set target, youth are being provided skill development training so that they can obtain jobs/employment”, wrote the CM.

The objective of this initiative of the state government is that the youth of the state get maximum employment opportunities. The educated youth here become self-reliant, skilled, and employment-oriented and can make an important contribution to the development of the country and the state, said the CM.

Global community must ensure LeT, JeM, no longer exploit Afghan territory for terror activities: India

Global community must ensure LeT, JeM, no longer exploit Afghan territory for terror activities: India

United Nations, Sep 18: India has called on the international community to ensure UN-designated terror entities, including Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, as well as their facilitators, no longer exploit Afghan territory for terrorist activities.

“India is closely monitoring the security situation in Afghanistan,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said on Wednesday.

“The international community must coordinate efforts towards ensuring that entities and individuals designated by the UN Security Council, ISIL and Al Qaeda and their affiliates, including Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, along with those who facilitate their operations, no longer exploit the Afghan territory for terrorist activities,” he said, in an apparent reference to Pakistan.

Harish, delivering a statement at the UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, said that India and Afghanistan share a civilisational relationship and Delhi has a “paramount interest” in ensuring peace and stability in the war-torn country.

“We believe in the utmost importance of international and regional consensus and cooperation on key issues concerning Afghanistan and actively engage with all relevant parties to promote peace, stability and development in the country. Our participation in UN meetings in Doha and other regional forums reflects our efforts,” he said.

Harish told the Council that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has spoken twice with the Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi. India also welcomed the strong condemnation by the Afghan side of the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack.

India further stressed that any coherent policy to address a post-conflict situation must combine incentivising positive behaviour and disincentivising harmful actions.

“Focusing only on punitive measures is unlikely to meet desired results. The United Nations and the international community has adopted more nuanced approaches in other post-conflict contexts. Afghanistan needs a fresh approach with hitherto unused policy instruments to support its people who are in such dire need,” Harish said.

He stressed that a “business as usual” approach is only expected to maintain the status quo, which is not good for Afghanistan and unlikely to meet international community expectations for Afghanistan’s people.

“After more than four years of living under a sanctioned regime, the Afghan people have not seen much scope for enhanced development assistance and cooperation,” he said.

As the country recovers from last month’s devastating earthquake, Harish said it is time for compassion and lending a helping hand to millions of Afghans suffering under the yoke of poverty, disease and hunger.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, India was among the first countries to provide humanitarian assistance, immediately delivering 1,000 family tents and 15 tonnes of food supplies to the affected provinces of Afghanistan.

An additional 21 tonnes of relief materials, including essential medicines, hygiene kits, blankets and generators, were dispatched. More relief supplies are underway and will be delivered in the coming days, Harish said.

He added that this humanitarian assistance dovetails with India’s support since August 2021, when the Taliban took over Kabul. At that time, India supplied around 50,000 tonnes of wheat, over 330 tonnes of medicines and vaccines, 40,000 litres of pesticides and other essential social support items for millions of Afghans in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

In partnership with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, India has provided 84 MTs of assistance and medicines and 32 MTs of social support items for drug rehabilitation programmes, particularly those focused on women.

Reiterating that India’s commitment to meeting the developmental needs of the Afghan people is “non-negotiable”, Harish said New Delhi’s immediate priorities in Afghanistan include the provision of humanitarian assistance and the implementation of capacity-building initiatives for the Afghan people.

India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s reconstruction is demonstrated through more than 500 development partnership projects across all provinces, he said.

He said India will continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders and broadly support the international community’s efforts towards a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.

Midnight blaze guts three houses, two shops in north Kashmir’s Baramulla

Baramulla, Sep 18: A massive fire broke out in the congested locality of Old Baramulla town during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, damaging multiple structures including residential houses and shops.

According to officials, the fire was reported at around 12:40 am when flames erupted in two adjoining residential-cum-commercial buildings, one a three-storied and the other a two-storied structure, both roofed with galvanized corrugated iron sheets. The fire quickly spread to nearby houses and business establishments, creating panic among locals.

Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control after hectic efforts. By the time the flames were doused, at least three residential houses and two shops had suffered significant damage.

An official confirmed that both the affected buildings were concrete constructions. “The intensity of the fire was high, but timely intervention prevented it from spreading to more structures,” the official said.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as locals joined hands with firefighters to contain the flames. “People were rushing with buckets of water while firefighters battled the fire with their equipment. It was frightening as the flames were leaping into the sky,” said a local witness.

Authorities have initiated an assessment of the losses, while the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Preliminary reports suggest that no casualties were reported in the incident, though property loss is said to be extensive.

Police said they are investigating the matter to establish the cause of the blaze. Meanwhile, the affected families have been provided temporary relief and shifted to safer accommodations.[KNT]

Cloudburst in Uttarakhand's Chamoli leaves 5 missing, washes away six houses

Chamoli, Sep 18: At least five people have been reported missing after a cloudburst triggered by torrential rains struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

The sudden downpour late Wednesday night caused heavy debris flow in Nanda Nagar, reducing six buildings to rubble.

Teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and the Public Works Department have been deployed, with JCB machines and other equipment pressed into service to clear debris and aid relief efforts.

Two people were pulled out alive from the debris, while search and rescue operations continue despite extremely adverse conditions.

A medical team accompanied by three ambulances has been rushed to the site, officials confirmed.

However, relentless rain and difficult terrain are severely hampering rescue efforts.

The weather department has also issued a warning of more heavy rainfall in the coming days across Chamoli.

Locals reported that several residents are still believed to be trapped inside their homes following the cloudburst.

Authorities have deployed teams on the ground to locate the missing, even as the threat of further landslides looms large.

The incident comes just four days after a devastating cloudburst in Dehradun’s Sahastradhara, which killed at least 13 people, swept away roads, damaged shops and homes, and destroyed two major bridges.

That disaster had cut off multiple routes linking the state capital with surrounding regions.

During this, the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun also suffered extensive damage after the Tamsa River, swollen by torrential rains and a cloudburst in Sahastradhara, inundated the temple premises.

Several feet of sand and debris entered the temple complex, submerging the Shivling and leaving deep cracks in the walls.

In response to the worsening situation, the state government has issued a red alert for Dehradun, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Ptihoragarh and Chamoli, cautioning residents about the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, further landslides, infrastructure collapse, and rising fatalities through September 20.

Body with bullet injury found in Jammu park, suicide suspected

Pennsylvania, Sep 18: Three police officers lost their lives and two others were critically injured in a shooting incident in Pennsylvania’s Codorus Township, according to local media reports.

State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris confirmed the deaths and said the gunman was also killed during the confrontation on Wednesday afternoon (US time).

“They were there to follow up on an investigation that began yesterday,” Paris told reporters at a press conference, describing the case as “domestic-related”.

He declined to share further details about the nature of the investigation. The incident unfolded shortly after 2 p.m. local time in North Codorus Township, located about 115 miles west of Philadelphia near the Maryland border, the local media reported.

Governor Josh Shapiro stated that the officers were responding to a domestic investigation when gunfire erupted.

He confirmed that the two wounded officers remain in critical but stable condition. Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or specified which agencies the slain officers were serving at the time.

“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Shapiro said, expressing condolences on behalf of the state.

Visuals from the scene showed one of the injured officers being airlifted by helicopter.

In response to the shooting, a nearby school district in Spring Grove was briefly placed under a shelter-in-place order, though officials later clarified that students were safe and unaffected, according to local media reports.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned the violence, calling the attack “a scourge on our society”, and confirmed that federal agents were assisting local authorities in the investigation.

Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis appealed to residents to keep the victims and their families in their prayers.

Investigation is underway, and further details are awaited.

Operation Sindoor shattered JeM: Tarun Chugh

Chugh hails reopening of tourist spots in J&K

Jammu, Sep 17: BJP national General Secretary Tarun Chugh Wednesday said that the “belated admission by Jaish-e-Mohammad about the devastating impact of Operation Sindoor” was the strongest proof of India’s decisive counter-terror capability.

“In May 2025, our brave armed forces demolished Jaish’s Bahawalpur headquarters, eliminated over a hundred dreaded terrorists including Kandahar hijackers and struck at the very roots of Masood Azhar’s empire.

Today, even Jaish commanders are on record acknowledging their losses,” Chugh said.

In a press statement, he hit out sharply at the Congress alliance and its leader Rahul Gandhi, reminding how they questioned the success of Operation Sindoor just as they once cast aspersions on the surgical strikes and Balakot airstrikes. “This is a consistent pattern—our forces write history with blood and courage, and Rahul Gandhi tries to erase it with doubt and dishonor. The nation will never forgive such betrayal,” Chugh said. From the surgical strikes of 2016 to the Balakot airstrikes in 2019, and now Operation Sindoor in 2025, India’s armed forces wrote a saga of unmatched bravery. Each time, while the world acknowledged India’s right to defend itself, Congress leaders tried to plant seeds of doubt and spoke in the very language that Pakistan used to discredit our victories, BJP national general secretary said.

“This duplicity is not just politics—it is an insult to every soldier who risks his life for the tricolour,” Chugh said, adding that history would remember those operations as milestones of India’s rise, while it would remember Rahul Gandhi’s comments as footnotes of shame.

Let Army takeover post-flood restoration work: MLA Shabir Kullay

Let Army takeover post-flood restoration work: MLA Shabir Kullay

Srinagar, Sep 17: Shopian MLA Shabir Ahmad Kullay has accused the civil administration of failing to deliver during crises such as the ongoing closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, suggesting that rehabilitation work should be handed over to the Army.

The legislator said that the interests of the people would be better served if the Army directly managed affairs, as it functions without political considerations.

“The Army installed a bridge in Jammu’s Tawi river within 12 hours. When there is desire to do anything, nothing is impossible. If you want to run Kashmir, handover Kashmir to the Army because there will be no politics,” Kullay as per Kashmir News Trust told reporters. Kullay said the continuing hardship faced by farmers, traders, and ordinary commuters highlighted the administration’s lack of urgency. “People are suffering, businesses are collapsing, and yet there is no accountability. “The contrast is clear when we see how the Army gets things done in hours while our officials keep blaming circumstances,” he added.

Notably, the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, the Valley’s only all-weather road link to the rest of the country, has been repeatedly closed due to landslides and shooting stones triggered by inclement weather. The prolonged disruptions have left fruit-laden trucks stranded for days, leading to huge losses for orchardists and traders. Shortages of essentials have also been reported, adding to public anger.
