I-T deptt clarifies last date of ITR filing Sep 15 amid social media buzz on deadline extension

New Delhi, Sep 15: The Income Tax Department has clarified that the deadline for ITR filing for Assessment Year 2025-26 is September 15 and there is no further extension as circulated on social media.

In a late night post on X on September 14, the department termed “fake” a statement in circulation on social media stating that the due date of filing ITRs has been further extended to September 30, 2025.

Asking taxpayers to only rely on official updates on @IncomeTaxIndia, it said “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025”.

A host of chartered accountants and individuals have taken to social media over the past couple of days claiming that the I-T portal is facing glitches while making tax payment and downloading AIS (Annual Information Statement).

“The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser cache or try accessing the portal through a different browser,” the I-T department said in reply to one such post on Monday morning.

Replying to X posts claiming issues with uploading ITR and tax payment, the department has been asking individuals to share their details (along with PAN and mobile number) to e-mail id orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in.

On September 14, the I-T department had replied to users claiming issues with downloading AIS/TIS saying: “We’ve checked with our team. The AIS/TIS facility is functioning without any issues. May we request you to please try accessing it again. In case you continue to face difficulties, please share your details (along with your mobile number & public IP address) with us at cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in.”

In a post on X , the department said to assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, its helpdesk is functioning on a 24×7 basis, and is providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X.

On September 13, the department had said that over 6 crore ITRs had been filed till afternoon.

The department had in May announced an extension of the due date for filing ITRs for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 (for income earned in financial year 2024-25) by individuals, HUFs and entities who do not have to get their accounts audited from July 31 to September 15.

The extension was on account of “structural and content revisions” in the income tax return (ITR) forms, which was notified in late April and early May. The changes made in the ITR form for AY 2025-26 also need modifications to be made in ITR filing utilities and the back-end system.

ITR filings have shown consistent growth over the years, reflecting rising compliance and widening of the tax base. For AY 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore ITRs were filed up to July 31, 2024, compared to 6.77 crore for AY 2023-24, registering a 7.5 per cent year-on-year growth.

300 Social Media Accounts Blocked in Three Days Across Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban

Jammu, Sept 15: Authorities in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts have blocked as many as 300 social media accounts in just three days after they were found circulating provocative content and spreading misinformation aftermath the arrest of MLA Mehraj Malik.

According to officials, the IT Cells of these three districts monitored Facebook, X and Instagram platforms round-the-clock and traced accounts involved in sharing morphed images, distorted videos and fabricated posts aimed at provoking unrest.

Police sources confirmed that First Information Reports (FIRs) have been recommended against several identified handlers operating these accounts. While some accounts were traced locally within Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country, law enforcement agencies have also written to social media companies for permanent blocking of the rest.

Officials said the propaganda mainly included manipulated visuals of protests, misleading timelines of events and unrelated photographs portrayed as current demonstrations in Doda. “The content was deliberately designed to instigate the public and create a false sense of tension,” an officer said.

DIG Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range, Sridhar Patil, stated that the IT Cells of the three districts worked tirelessly to identify and neutralize accounts spreading fake news. “Action as warranted under law has been taken and will continue against such elements,” he said.

Authorities have also passed on evidence to intelligence agencies for further investigation. Police emphasised that strict vigil will be maintained to ensure that no account is allowed to spread hatred or misinformation in the sensitive region. [KNT]

Trump calls for tougher NATO sanctions; criticises Europe's Russia oil purchases

Washington DC, Sep 15: US President Donald Trump called on NATO and European nations to take stronger action against Russia, particularly criticising Europe for continuing to buy oil from Moscow.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “They’re not doing the job. NATO has to get together. Europe has to get together. Europe is my friend, but Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don’t want them to buy oil. And the sanctions that they’re putting on are not tough enough. And I’m willing to do sanctions, but they’re going to have to toughen up their sanctions commensurate with what I’m doing.”

“Just to clarify, you wouldn’t move ahead until NATO moves ahead. Well, I’m ready to move ahead, but they have to do it. But right now they’re talking and they’re not doing. Look, they’re buying oil from Russia. We’re not buying oil from Russia. They’re buying a lot of oil from Russia. That’s not the deal,” he added.

He also criticised European nations for continuing to import liquefied natural gas from Russia. “It’s not the deal, though. The deal is they’re not supposed whether it’s natural gas or whether it’s cigarettes, I don’t care. They’re not supposed to be buying from Russia,” he added.

When asked about holding a summit to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, he affirmed, “Whether you call it a summit or just a get together, doesn’t matter, but I’ll probably have to get they to hate each other so much they almost can’t talk. They’re incapable of talking to each other.”

Recently, Trump wrote a letter to NATO nations, stating, “I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.”

Further, Trump proposed that NATO impose tariffs of 50 per cent to 100 per cent on China. “I believe that this, plus NATO, as a group, placing 50 per cent to 100 per cent TARIFFS ON CHINA, to be fully withdrawn after the WAR with Russia and Ukraine is ended, will also be of great help in ENDING this deadly, but RIDICULOUS, WAR,” Trump wrote. “China has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful Tariffs will break that grip.”

Trump also slammed the previous administration, saying, “This is not TRUMP’S WAR (it would never have started if I were President!), it is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s WAR. I am only here to help stop it, and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives (7,118 lives lost last week, alone. CRAZY!).”

Israeli strike won't stop mediation efforts for Gaza peace: Qatari PM

Doha, Sep 15: Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani said that Israel’s recent attack on Doha will not prevent Qatar, Egypt and the United States from continuing their mediation efforts to end the war in Gaza, the Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

The Qatari prime minister made the remarks on Sunday, during a preparatory meeting with foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic countries, held ahead of an emergency Arab-Islamic summit scheduled for Monday to address the Israeli attack, Xinhua news agency reported quoting the QNA.

The foreign ministers discussed a draft statement on the Tuesday attack by Israel on a residential building in Doha that housed several Hamas leaders.

In his talks, Al-Thani stressed that the region cannot achieve comprehensive peace and security unless the Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights.

Israel launched an unprecedented airstrike in the Qatari capital on Tuesday, targeting a building where Hamas officials were meeting to discuss the latest ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States.

The attack took place shortly after Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for a shooting that killed six people at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Monday.

Five members of Hamas and a Qatari security officer were killed during the strike, while key members of the Hamas negotiating team survived.

Doha strongly condemned the strike, with al-Thani calling it “state terror” in an interview with CNN.

“I have no words to express how enraged we are from such an action…This is state terror. We are betrayed,” he said.

Textiles, Handicrafts store to be set up at Srinagar Railway Station

Jammu, Sep 14: In alignment with its two-pronged strategy of cultural integration and financial sustainability, Jammu Railway Division of the Northern Railway has decided to effectively monetize station space with the allotment of a contract for a “Textiles and Handicrafts” Store at Srinagar Railway Station.

The contract of Rs 11.39 lakh, through e-auction, has been awarded for three years.

Railway authorities anticipate that the store, besides showcasing diverse cultural heritage of J&K, would emerge as a model for similar initiatives, to be emulated at other stations.

Public Relations Inspector Jammu Railway Division, Raghavender Singh, while sharing specifics about the initiative, said, “Jammu (Railway) Division of Northern Railway, in a significant step towards enhancing non-fare revenue, has successfully awarded the contract for setting up a Textiles and Handicrafts Store at Srinagar Railway Station. The move reflects the Division’s continued focus on innovation and passenger-centric development.”

“The store will showcase and promote the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir through a wide range of local textiles and handicrafts products, providing both utility and aesthetic benefits to passengers and tourists,” he stated.

The initiative, according to Raghvender Singh, was executed through a transparent e-auction process, ensuring fairness and maximum revenue generation. “This contract will generate a total revenue of Rs 11,39,876.46 for Indian Railways over a period of three years,” he said.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, commenting on this initiative, asserted, “Enhancing non-fare revenue while promoting local crafts is in perfect sync with our twin goals of cultural integration and financial sustainability. We are confident that this store will enrich the passenger experience and become a model for similar initiatives at other stations.”

He stated that the move was part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to effectively monetize station spaces and promote regional art, culture and entrepreneurship.

‘First-aid man of Kashmir’ trains thousands in disaster preparedness

‘First-aid man of Kashmir’ trains thousands in disaster preparedness

Baramulla, Sept 14: Based on his social service over the last two decades, a dental surgeon from Baramulla Dr. Itinderpal Singh has earned his recognition as a “first-aid man of Kashmir”, who has trained thousands of volunteers for disaster preparedness.

Dr. Itinderpal Singh has been at the forefront of disaster preparedness and rescue operations and trained thousands of volunteers across the country to respond to natural calamities.

His journey in disaster relief started some two decades ago when an earthquake left trails of destruction in the Uri area of Baramulla district in 2005.

His realisation about Kashmir’s vulnerability to disasters and the inspiration drawn from peace activist Nirmala Deshpande, pushed him to dedicate his life to training people in first aid, rescue, and rehabilitation.

“I have been part of almost every major disaster response since 2005. From the Kashmir earthquake and floods to the Nepal earthquake and Bihar floods I have been part of every relief and rescue operation,” he said.

Over the years he has trained over 30000 people across India including 10000 to 15000 in Kashmir alone. He has also worked with different international organizations including UNICEF, UNDP, and Save the Children besides representing India at a pre-hospital workshop in Riyadh.

His services have earned him recognition of India’s leading master trainers, not only in first aid but also in hospital emergency response.

His contributions have earned him multiple awards which include the State Award for Social Reform, felicitation by Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences on World Head Injury Day, and the Mahatma Gandhi Rashtriya Seva Medal for his relief work in Operation Sindoor.

“My biggest satisfaction is when someone calls me and says you trained us and we saved someone’s life. That makes all the sacrifices worthwhile,” he said.

He said that at times, he gave up his private dental practice to fully devote himself to disaster management.

“But disaster risks in Kashmir are evolving and require a more serious approach. The pattern of disasters has changed. In addition to earthquakes, now we see flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides as well. Every village must have a trained task force in first aid, search and rescue, camp arrangement, and early warning systems,” he said.

He said that time was right for people to get disaster-ready. “More awareness programmes are required at the grassroots level. Communities must know how to mitigate risks and act during emergencies. Government efforts must be complemented by citizen preparedness,” he said.

When asked about the response of youth in volunteer work, he said that Kashmir has no dearth of volunteers as young people are eager to learn.

“We conduct awareness drives in schools and colleges, after which interested students are enrolled for proper training at Civil Defence offices. The response has been overwhelming,” he said.

Nepal’s interim PM Karki vows to step down after 6 months

Nepal’s interim PM Karki vows to step down after 6 months

New Delhi, Sep 14: Nepal’s newly-appointed interim prime minister Sushila Karki has said she will serve in office for no longer than six months, pledging to hand power to a new government after elections scheduled for 5 March next year.

“I did not wish for this job. It was after voices from the streets that I was compelled to accept,” Karki told reporters in her first public remarks since being sworn in on Friday, according to the BBC.

She stressed that her priority was to respond to the demands of the youth-led protests that forced a change of government.

“We have to work according to the thinking of the Gen Z generation. What this group is demanding is the end of corruption, good governance and economic equality,” she said.

Her appointment comes after weeks of nationwide unrest in which more than 70 people were killed.

The protests, initially triggered by a controversial ban on social media platforms on 8 September, quickly spiralled into one of the worst episodes of violence in Nepal’s recent history.

Demonstrators vandalised politicians’ homes and set fire to parliament, while security forces clashed with crowds in Kathmandu and other major cities.

Officials have confirmed that among the 72 killed were three police personnel.

Nepal has faced cycles of political turmoil since the abolition of its monarchy in 2008.

Corruption scandals, weak coalitions, and public disillusionment with political elites have repeatedly sparked unrest.

The latest protests, driven largely by students and young professionals, mark a new phase of agitation, often described locally as the “Gen Z movement,” with demands for transparency, accountability, and greater economic opportunity.

Speaking on Sunday, Karki expressed regret at the destruction of state property during the protests.

“I feel ashamed. If they were Nepalis who destroyed these essential structures, how can they be called Nepalis?” she asked.

Karki, a former chief justice of the Supreme Court, is widely regarded as having a clean image, though her judicial tenure was marred by an impeachment attempt that cut short her 11-month term.

Her interim cabinet now faces daunting challenges: restoring law and order, rebuilding parliament and other key institutions damaged during the unrest, and reassuring both the protesters who demand sweeping reforms and a wary public still recovering from the violence.
