Security review, border areas inspection conducted in Kathua

Jammu, Mar 25: Kathua Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma on Wednesday conducted an extensive security review and inspection of border areas in the district and directed police to carry out frequent search operations in nursery areas to check for suspicious movement.

Accompanied by operations officers, the Kathua SSP toured several border police posts, nurseries and adjoining areas along the International Border in the district.

The visit was aimed at assessing ground preparedness and reviewing coordination among different security agencies deployed in the sector, they said.

The officers also patrolled the sensitive Haria Chak nursery area, where the SSP instructed regular searches to detect the presence of suspicious elements.

During the inspection of Haria Chak border police post, Sharma stressed that surveillance mechanisms in the area should be strengthened by installing CCTV cameras at all border police posts and naka points to enhance real-time monitoring.

She emphasised maintaining close coordination with the residents to ensure real-time information sharing.

The team later visited Maharajpur border police post and reviewed the progress of ongoing construction works.

“Directions were issued to expedite the work while ensuring adherence to security specifications and infrastructural standards,” they said.

Kathua Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining safety and security in the border district through proactive policing, enhanced surveillance and strong inter-agency coordination, officials said.

No fuel shortage, say oil firms; urge public to avoid panic buying

No fuel shortage, say oil firms; urge public to avoid panic buying

New Delhi, Mar 25: State-owned oil companies on Wednesday said there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG in the country, urging citizens not to believe rumours circulating on social media or resort to panic buying.

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the nation’s largest oil firm, said “there is no shortage of petrol or diesel”, adding that its outlets are “well-stocked and fully operational”.

It cautioned that rumours “can create unnecessary concern and disrupt normal supply patterns” and urged citizens to “avoid panic buying and rely only on verified information”.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) termed reports of fuel shortages in certain areas “completely unfounded”, asserting that “there is no shortage of fuel across the nation”.

The company said India is a net exporter of petrol and diesel and has “adequate stocks of crude oil, petrol, diesel and ATF”, with supply chains operating “smoothly without any disruption”.

It added that it remains “fully operational and committed to ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply”.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) also said there is “no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG across the country”, with supplies remaining stable and stocks adequate.

It advised customers not to be misled by rumours or engage in panic buying, and to “continue with normal consumption patterns”, adding that it is committed to ensuring “an uninterrupted and seamless fuel supply” across its network.

While the war in West Asia has disrupted crude oil, LNG and LPG supply chains, India with its diversified sourcing has been able to secure enough supplies of crude oil (the raw material used to make fuels like petrol and diesel) from West Africa, Latin America and the US.

The disruption in liquefied natural gas (LNG) due to India’s largest supplier’s facilities in Qatar being hit in the war, has led to prioritisation of the fuel to domestic users and CNG while some curtailment has been done for industrial users like fertilizer plants.

LPG is the most impacted by the war as the country relied on imports to meet 60 per cent of its demand. A majority of it came from the Gulf countries, from where supplies have been hit. This has led to government prioritising supplies to domestic household kitchens and curtailing usage by commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants by at least half.

Figures provided by the Higher Education Department show that more than 3,300 teaching posts are sanctioned across nine public universities and two central universities functioning under the aegis of Union Ministry of Education, while only around 1,900 are in position, leaving a large gap that has forced several institutions to function with far below their approved strength.

The data shows that the University of Jammu has 252 teachers in position against 442 sanctioned posts, leaving around 43 per cent vacancies, while the University of Kashmir has 373 teachers against 570 sanctioned posts, a shortage of about 35 per cent.

In agricultural universities, SKUAST-Jammu has 237 teachers against 411 sanctioned posts, nearly 42 per cent vacant, while SKUAST-Kashmir has 424 in position against 540 sanctioned posts, leaving about 21 per cent posts unfilled.

Overall, the figures indicate that most universities in Jammu and Kashmir are running with shortages ranging from around 20 per cent to over 60 per cent of their sanctioned teaching strength, raising concerns over academic workload and functioning of departments.

Student enrolment data shows that universities across Jammu and Kashmir have a combined strength of more than 69,000 students, the majority of whom belong to the local category, while non-local students is numbering 3,465 including 12 foreign nationals.

The figures indicate that Cluster University Jammu and Cluster University Srinagar have the highest enrolment with 16,711 and 16,179 students respectively, followed by the University of Kashmir with 12,002 students and the University of Jammu with 3946 students.

Central University of Jammu has 3,372 students, while Central University of Kashmir has 2,592 students enrolled in different programmes. Other universities, including SKUAST-Jammu, SKUAST-Kashmir, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Islamic University of Science and Technology and Mata Vaishno Devi University have 1997, 4959, 2401, 4827 and 796 students, respectively.

Data on teaching staff composition also reflects a strong local presence in most universities. At the University of Kashmir, 356 out of 373 teachers are locals, while the University of Jammu has 198 local teachers out of 252 in position. SKUAST-Kashmir has 378 local teachers out of 424, and SKUAST-Jammu has 146 locals out of 237 teachers.

In contrast, central universities show a higher share of non-local faculty. Central University of Jammu has 112 non-local teachers out of 160 in position, while Central University of Kashmir has 45 non-locals out of 108 teachers.

Three more arrested in Pak-linked espionage racket; total 21 held

Ghaziabad, Mar 25: Police have arrested three more alleged members of a Pakistan-linked espionage racket that was sending sensitive information to the neighbouring country, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 21, an official said.

The accused includes Sameer alias Shooter, a native of Bihar’s Bhagalpur and currently residing in Delhi, who is said to be a key member of the alleged network.

The other two arrested are Sameer of Shamli district and Shivraj from Shahjahanpur, currently residing in Ghaziabad, police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Trans Hindon) Dhawal Jasiwal said the National Investigation Agency has interrogated the accused.

“With these, 21 people have been arrested so far, including six minors. Ghaziabad police have filed a charge-sheet in the district court,” he said.

On Sunday, Meera Thakur (28), a resident of Mathura district, and Naushad Ali (20), a resident of Faridabad district of Haryana and hailing from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, were arrested. The third suspect apprehended was a minor.

Ali allegedly conducted a recce of security and police installations and railway stations in Delhi and other states and was forwarding photos and videos.

“The gang involved in espionage was sending secret information to a man named Sardar alias Zoravar Singh, who was operating the spying racket from Pakistan,” Additional Commissioner of Police Raj Karan Nayyar had said on Monday.

The arrested have been identified as: Suhel Malik alias Romeo, Sane Iram alias Mehak, Praveen, Raj Valmiki, Shiva Valmiki, Ritik Gangwar, Ganesh, Vivek, Gagan Kumar Prajapati, Durgesh Nishad, Naushad Ali and Meera, the police said.

The espionage racket was busted on March 13. Meera and Suhail were associates for many years. During interrogation, she revealed that she met Suhail through Facebook, after which she joined the group, they said.

According to Nayyar, Meera was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on charges of arms smuggling in 2025. She also claimed that she was an informer for the Mumbai Police.

Naushad Ali told the police that he connected with the other accused via various social media platforms and was directly in touch with Sardar in Pakistan.

“He confessed that he conducted a recce of security and police installations and railway stations in Delhi and other states and was forwarding photos and videos,” the officer said.

The gang was allegedly operated in India by Suhail alias Romeo, a resident of Nargadhi Nawada in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh, the police said.

“He had recruited other members of the gang. He was paying Rs 5,000 for each piece of information. He was receiving funds from Pakistan via Punjab in the accounts of money transfer centres and shopkeepers, so that nobody could doubt the money transactions,” Nayyar said.

The detained minor had allegedly installed solar-operated CCTV cameras at Delhi cantonment railway station, the police said.

“The gang was instructed to recruit less educated Hindu minor boys to evade suspicion,” Additional CP Nayyar had said.

Iran fires dozen missile salvos at Israel as Trump insists talks are progressing

Iran fires dozen missile salvos at Israel as Trump insists talks are progressing

Dubai, Mar 25: President Donald Trump says the United States is in talks with Tehran to end the war, even as both sides kept up intense barrages and Iran denied negotiations were underway.

The Islamic Republic fired a dozen missile salvos at Israel on Tuesday and rocket attacks by Lebanese militants killed a woman — the first death in Israel by fire from Lebanon during the war.

Israel said it carried out an extensive series of strikes on Iranian “production sites” without providing details.

Although the volume of Iranian missiles fired at Israel has decreased, Tehran has kept up and indeed increased the pace of its launches, sending millions of Israelis into shelters multiple times a day. Recent failed interceptions have caused deaths and injuries.

Trump has delayed his self-imposed deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The near-total closure of the crucial waterway has sent fuel prices skyrocketing and threatened the world economy. US stocks swung between losses and gains on Tuesday over uncertainty about the length of the war.

Pakistan has offered to host talks on ending the conflict but Iran remains defiant, with a top military spokesman vowing to fight “until complete victory.”

Here is the latest:

US to send around 1,000 troops from 82nd Airborne Division to the Mideast

The troops are to be sent in the coming days, a person with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press.

The unit is considered the Army’s emergency response force and can typically be deployed on short notice. The force would include a battalion of the 1st Brigade Combat Team as well as Maj. Gen. Brandon Tegtmeier, the division’s commander, and division staff, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military plans.

It’s the latest addition of troops after US officials said last week that thousands of Marines aboard several Navy ships would head to the region.

While the Marine units are trained in missions that include supporting US embassies, evacuating civilians and disaster relief, the soldiers of the 82nd Airborne are trained to parachute into hostile or contested territory to secure key territory and airfields.

The New York Times reported earlier that the deployment was being considered.

France’s Emmanuel Macron urges Iran to engage in good faith negotiations

In a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the French president also called on Iran to end the “unacceptable attacks” against countries in the region, preserve energy and civilian infrastructure and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

“I called on Iran to engage in good faith in negotiations, in order to open a path to de-escalation,” he said on the social platform X.

UN chief condemns Israeli settlement expansion and steps promoting West Bank annexation

Secretary-General António Guterres said the rapid pace of settlement expansion and proliferation of outposts is fuelling tensions, impeding Palestinians’ access to their land and threatening the viability of an independent and contiguous Palestinian state. It is also taking place in conjunction with a rise in settler attacks, he said.

UN deputy Middle East envoy Ramiz Alakbarov, delivered the findings from Guterres’ report to the UN Security Council, saying Israeli planning authorities advanced or approved over 6,000 housing units in the West Bank between December and March 13.

He said demolitions and seizures of Palestinian homes and other structures also accelerated, as well as inflammatory rhetoric from Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hamas and Israeli ministers and members of Parliament.

Eight of the 15 council members — Bahrain, Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia, Pakistan, Somalia and United Kingdom — delivered a joint statement just before the meeting reaffirming their “firm opposition to annexation” of any Palestinian territory and any forced displacements.

Pope Leo XIV repeats his appeal for a ceasefire in the Middle East

Speaking to reporters Tuesday evening outside his residence in Castel Gandolfo, the pontiff invited leaders to “work for peace” not with weapons but rather “with dialogue, truly seeking a solution for all”.

“Hatred is increasing, violence is worsening,” Pope Leo warned, saying more than a million people have been displaced and many others killed.

“We want to pray for peace,” he said, adding, “but I invite all authorities to truly work through dialogue to resolve this problem”.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker Qalibaf is floated as a possible US contact in talks as war rages

Long before he became Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf went on a charm offensive for almost two decades, portraying himself as a hard-liner the West could do business with in the Islamic Republic.

The 64-year-old pilot and former Revolutionary Guard commander has denied that there have been discussions with the United States amid reports that he was floated as Washington’s negotiating partner in talks.

Questions also remain as to what power Qalibaf has within Iran’s theocracy, shattered after the February 28 Israeli airstrike that killed 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, now Iran’s new supreme leader, has backed Qalibaf through his repeated and failed presidential campaigns. Still, multiple centres of power within Iran’s theocracy now likely vie for control of the Islamic Republic — and uncertainties remain over Mojtaba Khamenei’s status as he has yet to be seen after reportedly being wounded.

Meanwhile, Qalibaf has been tied to the crackdown against protesters calling for change within Iran’s government and has seen corruption allegations swirl around him during his time in office.

Israel isn’t part of any reported Iran talks and will continue military operations with US, ambassador says

Israel’s UN ambassador Danny Danon says as far as he knows Israel isn’t part of any reported talks between the United States and Iran later this week in Pakistan.

“As we speak, Israel and the US, we continue to target military targets in Iran, and we will continue to do that,” he told UN reporters Tuesday.

He said the attacks have “accomplished a lot” but not everything.

Danon accused Iran’s foreign minister of saying just weeks ago that Iran didn’t have missiles with a range beyond 2,000 kilometres — then launching a missile that went nearly 4,000 kilometres toward Diego Garcia, a remote Indian Ocean island that hosts a major UK-US military base.

In negotiations at the end of the conflict, he said, Israel is determined to ensure that Iran has no nuclear or ballistic missile capability.

Iran says a projectile struck the area of Bushehr nuclear power plant

No casualties or technical damage was reported at the facility from the incident Tuesday night, which Iran’s atomic agency blamed on Israel and the United States.

The International Atomic Energy Agency posted on X that it “has been informed by Iran that another projectile hit the premises of the Bushehr”.

A similar event was reported last week by Iran and Russia who said a projectile had struck the grounds of the Russia-built Bushehr plant, raising the specter of a radiological incident as the war rages.

Latest Iranian missile attack on Israel hits apartments and injures at least 7 people

Images released by rescue authorities showed extensive damage to one floor of a residential building in Bnei Brak, east of Tel Aviv, where rescue services said a man was moderately wounded and six people lightly injured, including a seven-year-old boy and 80-year-old woman.

Impact sites with varying degrees of damage were reported in at least seven other locations in central Israel.

This was the 12th Iranian missile barrage fired at Israel on Tuesday, while rockets fired by militants in Lebanon also kept air raid sirens sounding for hours in Israel’s north and killed at least one woman.

Iran is firing an average of 10 missiles a day at Israel, military says

Israeli Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, the military’s spokesman, said in a televised statement that Iran fired dozens of missiles on Israel in the war’s first and second days of the war but this number “dropped quickly”. He attributed that to Israel’s continued strikes on military headquarters, launch sites and missile production sites across Iran.

He said the military completed several more waves of strikes on targets in Iran on Tuesday.

Although the volume of missiles has decreased, Iran has kept up and indeed increased the pace of its launches, sending millions of Israelis into shelters multiple times a day. Recent failed interceptions have caused deaths and injuries.

In a cryptic comment, Trump says Iran has shared a present’ as show of faith

Asked if he trusts the Iranians said to be in talks with US representatives, Trump said he doesn’t trust anybody but alluded to receiving a “gift” that he said suggested “we’re dealing with the right people”.

“They gave us a present, and the present arrived today,” Trump said speaking at the White House on Tuesday. “It was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money. And I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize.”

Pressed for more detail, Trump said it was “oil- and gas-related” but went no further. “It was a very nice thing they did. But what it showed me is that we’re dealing with the right people.”

A missile fired from Iran exploded over Lebanon, official says

A senior Lebanese military official said the cluster munition-equipped ballistic missile exploded earlier Tuesday over the Keserwan region north of Beirut, causing some material damage.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, added that the missile was heading west when it exploded but it was not clear where it was headed. It marked the first time an Iranian missile was intercepted over Lebanese airspace during the current conflict.

It was not clear how the missile was intercepted. The Lebanese military lacks air defenses.

The Israeli military said following an assessment that alongside the Iranian launches toward Israel on Tuesday was a ballistic missile fired from Iran that fell in Beirut.

BHIM rolls out biometric authentication for UPI payments

Srinagar, Mar 24: NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has launched biometric authentication for UPI payments on the BHIM app, enabling users to approve transactions up to ₹5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition.

The feature, available on both Android and iOS devices supporting biometric capabilities, eliminates the need to enter a UPI PIN for small-value transactions, making payments faster and more seamless. It can be used across common scenarios, including peer-to-peer transfers, merchant QR payments, and online purchases.

Lalitha Nataraj, MD & CEO of NBSL, said the move aims to enhance both convenience and security. “By enabling users to authenticate payments through fingerprint or face unlock, we are simplifying the payment experience while strengthening trust and security,” she said.

The addition of biometric verification reduces risks associated with PIN entry errors or sharing, as authentication remains linked to the user’s device. Transactions above Rs 5,000 will continue to require UPI PIN, ensuring added protection for higher-value payments.

Gold rebounds Rs 1,200 to Rs 1.44 lakh/10g in Delhi; silver stays flat

New Delhi, Mar 24: Gold prices snapped a four-day losing streak and climbed Rs 1,200 to Rs 1.44 lakh per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday, while silver remained flat at Rs 2.30 lakh per kilogram, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 1,43,600 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Monday.

Traders attributed the rebound in domestic gold prices to a recovery in global commodity markets and some buying at lower levels after recent sharp declines. In the international markets, spot gold rebounded after nine sessions of losses, rising USD 16.96, or 0.38 per cent, to USD 4,423.83 per ounce, while silver was trading 1.03 per cent higher at USD 69.86 per ounce.
