Trump asks Netanyahu not to strike Iran; says “very close” to peace deal

Washington, June 08: US President Donald Trump has asked Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to retaliate to Iran’s latest barrage of missiles, saying it would jeopardise the ongoing negotiations for a peace deal to end the three-month long conflict.

US media outlet Axios reported that after Iran launched missiles at Israel on Sunday, Trump spoke to Netanyahu in a bid to prevent fresh tensions between the two nations from derailing the peace deal.

Trump also asked Iran to return to the negotiating table.

“We’re very close. I would say an agreement would be signed on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week. And now this takes place,” Trump told Fox News.

“You’ve shot your missiles, that’s enough. Get back to the table and make a deal,” Trump said, referring to Iran’s strikes at Israel.

“The Iranian strikes didn’t hurt anybody. Hopefully Israel is not going to retaliate,” Trump told Axios.

“If Bibi strikes them back, it’s just going to keep going like the last 47 years, or the last 3,000 years,” he said.

Trump reiterated that Washington is close to reaching an agreement and warned that escalating tensions could derail the effort.

“Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike, and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one,” Trump said.

Speaking to Financial Times, Trump said Netanyahu would likely have to accept whatever agreement the US ultimately reaches with Iran.

“He won’t have any choice,” Trump said of Netanyahu, asserting that he “calls the shots”.

The interview was published as Iran launched missiles at Israel in its first attack since a ceasefire took effect in April.

Trump also criticised Israel’s strikes on Beirut on Sunday, saying he was “not happy about it”.

Trump told Netanyahu during the call to hold off because “we are close to doing something good in terms of a deal”, Axios reported, quoting a US official.

Netanyahu pushed back but ultimately “pseudo agreed” to stand down, the official said, adding that Sunday’s call was calmer than last week’s tense exchange between the leaders, and Trump did not raise his voice at Netanyahu on this occasion.

The inauguration coincided with the 28th commemorative event of the organization that has made a positive impact to thousands of lives in Kashmir. HPVT has a presence in all major hospitals of Kashmir, providing information, guidance, subsidized medicines, assistance in procedures, ambulance services, oxygen support, and more.

The inauguration of the Mobile Medical Unit was attended by members from the medical fraternity, charitable organisations, volunteers, stakeholders and many more. Farooq Ahmed Bhat, Chairman HPVT said the MMU was the beginning of extending medical and screening facilities from the organisation towards peripheries for the underserved populations. The medical unit, Lone said, will be travelling to various destinations in Kashmir, five days a week, as per qa schedule and roaster.

The MMU is equipped with an EEG, vital check-ups, bio-chemistry lab, ophthalmology lab and supplies of various kinds. He said the unit had been conceptualized 30 years ago. While giving an example, he said, how a test of a few hundred rupees, that detects protein in urine, can help avert CKD by at least 25 years, and save the family of the person from expenses of around Rs 50 lakh and unimaginable agony. He said more and more organisations in Kashmir need to step forward to make a difference in preventing diseases that have catastrophic financial implications.

Appreciating the MMU facility, Prof SM Saleem Khan, head Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at GMC Srinagar said that the facility would go a long way in early detection of non-communicable diseases. “Non-Communicable Diseases are ravaging Kashmir. And they are on the path of heart diseases, strokes and other diseases, if left untreated and undetected,” he said.

The day also saw distribution of food kits to families in need. The distribution was carried out discreetly, protecting the dignity of the recipients.

The gathering was informed that the pharmacy of HPVT has become a beacon of hope for the families dealing with chronic diseases and those with medical emergencies. The not-for-profit pharmacy has provided medicines worth Rs 15 crore in the previous financial year, it was revealed. In addition to a fleet of ambulances that have become the mainstay of patient transfers between various hospitals, the trust also provides pickup and drop with its ambulances. Sopore residents grapple with acute drinking water crisis

Sopore, Jun 7: Residents of Sangrampora area of Sopore town have voiced strong concern over an acute drinking water crisis that has persisted for nearly a month, causing immense hardship to hundreds of households and forcing people to rely on unsafe water sources for their daily needs.

According to local residents, the area has been facing a severe shortage of potable water due to the disruption of regular water supply. Despite repeated appeals to the concerned authorities, the problem remains unresolved, leaving residents frustrated and worried about the health and well-being of their families. Locals said that in the absence of a proper supply of clean drinking water, many families have no option but to consume contaminated and unhygienic water from alternative sources.

They warned that the situation poses serious health risks, particularly for children, elderly persons, and those suffering from various ailments. Residents stated that the ongoing crisis has affected their daily lives, making it difficult to meet basic household requirements. Women, children, and elderly members of families are reportedly bearing the brunt of the situation, often travelling long distances in search of water. “We have been suffering for the last one month without a reliable drinking water supply. People are forced to use dirty water, which can lead to serious diseases.

Clean drinking water is a basic necessity, and our repeated pleas have not yielded any result,” said Fatima Begum, one of the residents , while expressing anguish. The residents urged the Concerned Jal Shakti Department and district administration to immediately look into the matter and take urgent measures to restore the water supply. They demanded that officials visit the area, assess the ground situation, and ensure a sustainable solution to the crisis. The local residents hope that the concerned departments will act swiftly to restore access to safe and clean drinking water, which they say is a fundamental right and an essential requirement for a healthy life.

LPG price hiked by Rs 29 per 14.2-kg cylinder

LPG price hiked by Rs 29 per 14.2-kg cylinder

New Delhi, Jun 7: Domestic cooking gas LPG price has been raised by Rs 29 per cylinder, marking the second increase in three months as state-owned fuel retailers continue to grapple with elevated global energy costs.

The price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi will rise to Rs 942 from Rs 913 with effect from June 7, according to industry sources.

The increase follows aRs 60-per-cylinder hike on March 7 after the conflict in West Asia disrupted global energy supplies and drove up international fuel prices. Industry sources said that the increase had only partly offset losses incurred on domestic LPG sales.

State-run oil marketing companies were estimated to be losing about Rs 703 on every LPG cylinder sold before the latest revision, the sources said.

The LPG price hike comes amid a broader round of fuel price increases.

Petrol and diesel prices have been raised by a cumulative Rs 7.50 per litre since mid-May, while compressed natural gas (CNG) rates have increased by about Rs 6 per kg.

Despite the recent increases, oil companies continue to sell petrol and diesel below cost, incurring losses of around Rs 11 per litre on petrol and Rs 33.6 per litre on diesel, according to industry sources.

The government has so far avoided a full pass-through of higher international energy prices to consumers, absorbing part of the increase through state-owned fuel retailers as global crude oil and fuel markets remain volatile.
