PM Modi to inaugurate new Noida International Airport on Saturday

New Delhi, Mar 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly constructed Noida International Airport, envisioned as a major international gateway for the National Capital Region, on Saturday.

The Noida airport has been developed as the second international airport for the Delhi-NCR region, complementing Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Its inauguration marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a global aviation hub, an official statement said.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Uttar Pradesh on March 28, 2026. At around 11.30 am, he will undertake a walkthrough of the terminal building of the Noida International Airport at Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar. Thereafter, at around 12 noon, the prime minister will inaugurate Phase-I of Noida International Airport and address a public gathering on the occasion,” the statement said.

The Noida airport is one among the largest greenfield airport projects in India.

Together, the Delhi and Noida airports will function as an integrated aviation system, easing congestion, expanding passenger capacity, and positioning Delhi-NCR among the leading global aviation hubs, the statement said.

Phase-I of the Noida International Airport has been developed with an outlay of Rs 11,200 crore under a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model.

The airport will initially have a passenger handling capacity of 12 million passengers per annum. Once fully developed, this could be scaled up to 70 million passengers per annum.

The features include a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft; modern navigation systems, such as the Instrument Landing System; and advanced airfield lighting to support efficient, all-weather, round-the-clock operations.

The airport also incorporates a robust cargo ecosystem. It includes a multi-modal cargo hub, featuring an integrated cargo terminal and logistics zones.

The cargo facility is designed to handle over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually, expandable up to 18 lakh metric tonnes, and includes a dedicated 40-acre MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) facility.

Designed as a sustainable and future-ready infrastructure project, the Noida International Airport aims to operate as a net-zero emissions facility, integrating energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible practices.

Its architectural design draws inspiration from Indian heritage, incorporating elements reminiscent of traditional ghats and havelis, thereby blending cultural aesthetics with modern infrastructure.

Strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway, the Noida International Airport is planned as a multi-modal transport hub with seamless integration across road, rail, metro, and regional transit systems, ensuring efficient connectivity for passengers and cargo, the statement said.

German defence minister on US-Iran conflict

Canberra, Mar 26: German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius on Thursday described the Iran war as an economic “catastrophe” and said Germany did not want to get “sucked into” the conflict.

Pistorius said Germany was ready to help secure any peace once that was achieved and appealed for a ceasefire as soon as possible.

“To make it crystal clear, this war is a catastrophe for the world’s economies,” Pistorius told reporters at the Australian Parliament House.

“From the beginning on, we have not been consulted before. Nobody asked us before. It’s not our war, and therefore we don’t want to get sucked into that war,” Pistorius added.

Pistorius addressed the media in the national capital Canberra following a meeting with his Australian counterpart Richard Marles.

Iran dismisses US ceasefire plan, issues own counterproposal

Iran dismisses US ceasefire plan, issues own counterproposal

Dubai, Mar 26: Iran on Wednesday dismissed an American plan to pause the war in the Middle East, issuing its own counterproposal instead, as it launched more attacks on Israel and Gulf Arab countries.

Two officials from Pakistan described the 15-point US proposal broadly, saying it addressed sanctions relief, a rollback of Iran’s nuclear programme, limits on missiles and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is normally shipped.

Iran issued its own plan via state TV, which includes a halt to killings of its officials, means to make sure no other war is waged against it, reparations for the war, the end of hostilities and Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

“No negotiations have happened with the enemy until now, and we do not plan on any negotiations,” Iran’s foreign minister later told state TV.

The death toll from the war has risen to more than 1,500 people in Iran, nearly 1,100 people in Lebanon, 16 in Israel and 13 US military members, as well as a number of civilians on land and sea in the Gulf region. Millions of people in Lebanon and Iran have been displaced.

Here is the latest:

Trump insists Iran is still negotiating

Speaking at a fundraiser for Republicans in Washington, DC, Trump said Iran is still interested in cutting a deal.

“They are negotiating, by the way, and they want to make a deal so badly, but they’re afraid to say it because they figure they’ll be killed by their own people,” Trump said of Iran’s leaders.

The president added: “They’re also afraid they’ll be killed by us,” before quipping that no one wanted to lead Iran for fear of being assassinated by the United States.

Sirens sound in parts of Tel Aviv and cities in central Israel

There was no advance warning, as has been customary from Iranian missile salvos, suggesting this was rocket fire from Hezbollah in Lebanon, which has pounded northern Israel constantly throughout this war but rarely reached deeper into the country.

Israel’s emergency services said they had received no reports of casualties in the incident early Thursday morning.

Six people arrested in plot to kill Kuwait leaders, Ministry of Interior says

Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior says the six people were allegedly linked to the Iran-backed Hezbollah group and were arrested for planning to carry out assassinations of leaders in the Gulf state.

The ministry said in a statement that five of those arrested are Kuwaiti citizens. It added that it identified 14 more members of the group who had fled the country: five Kuwaitis, five Kuwaitis whose nationalities have been revoked, two Iranians and two Lebanese.

The arrested members confessed to espionage and to joining a terror group, the statement said, and have been referred to the public prosecutor.

At Pentagon Christian service, Hegseth prays for violence against those who ‘deserve no mercy’

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, hosting his first monthly Christian worship service at the Pentagon since the Iran war began, prayed Wednesday to have “every round find its mark”.

Hegseth frequently invokes his evangelical faith as head of the armed forces, depicting a Christian nation trying to vanquish its foes with military might.

“Let every round find its mark against the enemies of righteousness and our great nation,” Hegseth prayed during the livestreamed service. “Give them wisdom in every decision, endurance for the trial ahead, unbreakable unity, and overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy.”

Trump’s potential troop deployment is getting pushback on Capitol Hill

At least one Republican lawmaker is making it clear she does not support putting US service members on the ground in Iran following a closed-door briefing with lawmakers overseeing the military.

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina posted on social media that she would “not support troops on the ground in Iran, even more so after this briefing”.

While few other Republicans have taken that stance, the GOP chairs of the committees overseeing the military expressed some frustration that they are not receiving enough information about plans as the war enters a potential escalation.

“I am more fearful than ever that we’re on a path to put troops on the ground in Iran,” said Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal, adding that “None of the president’s objectives can be accomplished without a physical presence there.”

Iran’s foreign minister says his government does not plan any negotiations to end the war

In an interview with Iranian state TV late Wednesday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said that no talks with the United States have taken place.

“No negotiations have happened with the enemy until now, and we do not plan on any negotiations,” he said.

Attacks by both Iran and its allied groups must stop, Arab countries say

While most of their previous statements focused primarily on drone and missile fire from Iran, Wednesday’s statement by five Gulf nations and Jordan also condemned Iranian attacks “whether carried out directly or through their proxies and armed factions they support in the region”.

In a joint statement, they also urged Iraq to stop militias from launching attacks from its territory and reaffirmed their right to self-defense. The Gulf countries on the statement were Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.

UN chief says a new envoy will be on the ground promoting mediation to end Iran war

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said his personal envoy, veteran French diplomat Jean Arnault, will lead “UN efforts on the conflict and its consequences”.

More than three weeks after Israel and the US launched attacks on Iran, the secretary-general said, “the war is out of control”.

“My message is that diplomacy must prevail,” Guterres said. “And diplomacy requires sincere dialogue.”

He said Arnault will be doing on the ground what he has been trying to do from New York — supporting all efforts for mediation and peace.

Arnault will be in contact with all the parties and will be looking at the war’s impact on civilians in the region and beyond, Guterres said, including the economic turmoil, especially in less developed countries.

Jordan suspends residency of Iranian diplomat and denies accreditation of another

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi told the state-owned Al-Mamlaka TV Wednesday that this measure is a clear message to Iran that their attacks against neighboring states are rejected.

Several countries in the region, including Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, have declared Iranian diplomats persona non grata following Tehran’s attacks against their countries.

Al-Safadi said Iran has launched dozens of missiles and drones toward Jordan during the war. He insisted Jordan does not host foreign military bases, a rationale Iran has repeatedly used to justify attacks against neighboring states, although Jordan does host what the minister described as forces “of allied and friendly nations with whom we cooperate on defense and training.”

White House says Trump plans to host Chinese president in Washington later this year

With Trump’s trip to China now rescheduled for May 14 and 15, the White House is also talking about its intent to host the Chinese president in Washington later this year.

Trump had been scheduled to travel to China later this month but previously announced he was delaying the trip so he could be in Washington to help steward the US and Israeli war against Iran.

When asked if the new dates for Trump’s trip to China could suggest he believes the Iran war could end soon, his press secretary Leavitt offered an optimistic tone that the conflict could reach an endgame before he travels.

Leavitt also says the president and first lady Melania Trump plan to host Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife for a White House visit later this year.

White House maintains silence on who the US is negotiating with in Iran

But Leavitt declined to identify which Iranian or Iranians the administration is negotiating with. The press secretary also declined to comment on a 15-point ceasefire plan put forward by the United States that was rejected by Iran.

She cautioned White House reporters about “reporting about speculative points or speculative plans from anonymous sources.”

“The White House never confirmed that full plan,” Leavitt said, adding that “there are elements of truth to it, but some of the stories I read were not entirely factual.”

Houthis say they back Iran but will stay on the sidelines

Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthi rebels repeated their support for the Islamic Republic despite not taking part in the war against the United States and Israel, stressing that any decision to join the fight would be made independently and not dictated by Tehran, according to Houthi officials.

Three Houthi officials told The Associated Press that the group is historically and religiously connected with Iran, calling it an ally of Yemen, but taking part in the war will be solely a Yemeni decision. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to the media.

Houthi attacks on vessels during the Israel-Hamas war upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which about USD 1 trillion worth of goods passed each year before the war. The rebels also fired drones at Israel.

More from the White House on Iran talks

Leavitt declined to provide details on negotiations with Iran, saying it’s a sensitive issue that remains in flux.

She said there are “elements of truth” in a 15-point plan said to have been put forward by the United States, but also said some reports have been “not entirely factual”.

“I am not going to negotiate on behalf of the president here at the podium,” Leavitt said. “What I will tell you is these talks are ongoing.”

She cautioned White House reporters about “reporting about speculative points or speculative plans from anonymous sources.”

“The White House never confirmed that full plan,” Leavitt said, adding that “there are elements of truth to it, but some of the stories I read were not entirely factual.”

White House says more strikes to come if Iranian talks are unproductive

Saying that US forces are “very close to meeting the core objectives” of the military action against Iran, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that “productive conversations” with Iran were ongoing but stressed that more strikes could come if they’re unsuccessful.

“If Iran fails to accept the reality of the current moment, if they fail to understand that they have been defeated militarily … Trump will ensure they are hit harder than they have ever been hit before,” Leavitt said at a briefing Wednesday.

Trump has said that US was in talks with Iran to end the war as diplomatic efforts picked up, and Iran issued a newly defiant statement.

Nine held for helping candidates clear competitive exams using fake PwD certificates, scribes

Lucknow, Mar 26: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) claimed to have busted a gang involved in facilitating cheating in competitive examinations by using forged persons with disabilities (PwD) certificates and arranging scribes in violation of rules.

According to an STF statement on Wednesday, the arrests were made following an operation linked to irregularities in the CBSE-conducted EMRS (Eklavya Model Residential Schools) recruitment examination (Tier-2) for the post of Junior Secretariat Assistant between March 22 and 25.

The accused have been identified as Raj Kishor, Neeraj Jha, Satyam Kumar, Ram Milan, Manish Mishra, Akash Agarwal, Saurabh Soni, Abhishek Yadav and Deepak Kumar, hailing from different districts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

The statement said the gang lured unemployed youths and their families with promises of helping them secure government jobs and charged hefty amounts. They allegedly arranged fake PwD certificates through intermediaries and ensured that candidates were declared eligible under the PwD category.

The accused also arranged professional solvers as scribes to appear in examinations on behalf of the candidates, thereby enabling them to secure jobs in government and public sector institutions, the STF said.

Acting on intelligence inputs, an STF team, under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Vimal Kumar Singh, conducted a raid at a CBSE examination centre at Central Academy, Sector 4, Vikas Nagar in Lucknow on Tuesday, it said.

Eight suspects were detained from the centre, while another accused was later brought from Gorakhpur for questioning. Based on interrogation and documentary evidence, all nine were arrested, it added.

During the operation, the STF recovered 13 mobile phones, two laptops, cash worth Rs 2.70 lakh, a Swift Dzire and six forged PwD certificates.

During questioning, Manish Mishra, the alleged kingpin, admitted to running a racket that deployed professional solvers as scribes at offline examination centres to assist candidates fraudulently, officials said.

A case has been registered against the accused at Vikas Nagar police station in Lucknow under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Uttar Pradesh Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Further legal proceedings are underway, police said.

Centre expands vibrant villages programme to border areas nationwide

New Delhi, Mar 25: The Centre has approved the second phase of the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP-II) to promote development in villages along India’s international land borders, expanding the initiative beyond the northern frontier.

The programme follows the launch of VVP-I in February 2023, under which 662 villages across 46 blocks in border districts of Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Ladakh were identified for comprehensive development with an outlay of Rs 4,800 crore for 2022–26.

VVP focuses on improving livelihoods and infrastructure in remote border villages through tourism promotion, skill development, agriculture and cooperative activities, along with better road connectivity, healthcare, education, energy and telecom services, with the aim of encouraging residents to remain in these areas. So far, 263 tourism-related projects worth Rs 116 crore have been approved under the first phase.

Under VVP-II, approved with an outlay of Rs 6,839 crore till 2028-29, the scheme will now cover villages along other international borders in multiple states and Union Territories, including Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, among others. Lockdown speculation triggers fuel buying frenzy

Lockdown speculation triggers fuel buying frenzy

Srinagar, Mar 25: On a day when whispers travelled faster than facts, fear translated into action across Kashmir.

From early morning, serpentine queues formed outside petrol pumps, LPG godowns, and fuel stations, as anxious residents rushed to stock up on essentials amid rumours of an impending lockdown – rumours the government has firmly denied.

At Nowshera, the scene was telling.

Vehicles lined up bumper-to-bumper, engines idling, drivers stepping out repeatedly to check the queue’s progress.

Some carried plastic cans and jerrycans, hoping to store extra fuel “just in case.”

“We heard about a possible lockdown late last night through social media and word of mouth. That’s why I came early morning to refill my car and even brought a can for extra petrol,” said Junaid Ahmad, standing beside his vehicle. “You never know what might happen. Even if it turns out to be false, at least we are prepared.”

The anxiety was not limited to motorists.

At several fuel stations, attendants struggled to manage the sudden surge.

“Since morning, we have not had a moment to breathe,” said a fuel station worker in Srinagar. “People are not just filling their tanks, they are asking for full tanks, extra storage, even arguing if we try to regulate supply. This kind of rush usually happens only during extreme situations.”

For many, the fear stemmed not from official announcements, but from uncertainty itself.

“There is confusion everywhere,” said Shabir Lone, another customer waiting in line. “Someone says lockdown is coming, someone says it’s fake. In such situations, people panic. We have families to look after. It’s better to be cautious than regret later.”

At LPG distribution centres, the rush was equally intense.

Women, elderly residents, and daily wage workers queued up, clutching booking slips and hoping to secure cylinders before stocks ran out.

“I had already booked my cylinder, but when I heard about the lockdown rumours, I came personally to ensure I get it today,” said Rafiqa Begum, a homemaker. “Cooking gas is essential. If that finishes, how will we manage at home?”

Another resident, Fayaz Ahmad, echoed the concern saying, “During past situations, supplies got delayed. That memory is still fresh. So people are reacting quickly now, maybe even overreacting, but it comes from experience.”

Distributors confirmed an unusual spike in demand.

“Normally, we handle a steady flow of bookings. Today, it’s overwhelming,” said an LPG dealer in Srinagar. “People are insisting on immediate delivery, some even requesting additional cylinders. We are trying to assure them that supplies are sufficient, but fear spreads faster than reassurance.”

Amid the chaos, the administration moved swiftly to calm nerves.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, categorically dismissed the speculations and urged people not to fall prey to misinformation.

“If anything like that happens, you will get information from the government. The Honourable Prime Minister is continuously addressing the country, and statements are also being issued by the government. There is no need to rely on unverified sources,” Garg said.

Appealing directly to the public, he said, “I would like to request everyone that we do not need any kind of panic. Stocks of essential commodities are being continuously monitored, their sufficiency is being ensured, and distribution is being maintained smoothly.”

Garg also issued a stern warning against rumour mongering saying, “If there is any such development, the government will inform you first. Those involved in spreading rumours will face strict action. I urge people to rely only on official handles for authentic information.”

On the broader situation, he reassured that normalcy prevails.

“The situation remains stable. Security reviews are a continuous process carried out jointly by the administration and police. Tourist destinations are open, and Kashmir is witnessing a significant influx of visitors, especially after the opening of the Tulip Garden,” he said.

Officials from oil marketing companies (OMCs) also stepped in to dispel fears, maintaining that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG in Kashmir.

“Supply lines are intact, and there is adequate stock to meet demand,” an OMC official said. “We appeal to people not to indulge in panic buying, as it creates unnecessary pressure on the system.”

SMC pensioners flag declining benefits, submit memorandum to DC Srinagar

Srinagar, Mar 25: The SMC Senior Citizens Forum on Wednesday observed the nationwide “Call Attention Day” and submitted a memorandum of demands to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, highlighting the growing concerns of pensioners.

The programme was part of a coordinated countrywide protest organised by the All India Confederation of Pensioners, with similar representations made to district administrations across India.

A delegation led by Forum President Haji Bashir Ahmed met the DC and raised issues related to pension reforms, delayed benefits, and the declining safeguards for senior citizens. During the meeting, the delegation expressed concern over what it termed as a “gradual erosion” of pensioners’ rights, stating that the benefits and protections earned over decades of service are increasingly being overlooked.

“We are observing this ‘Call Attention Day’ to remind the administration that the rights of pensioners cannot be ignored. Our memorandum reflects the collective grievances of retirees struggling for dignity and financial security in their later years,” Bashir said.

The forum urged the government to take immediate steps to address pending issues, restore concessions, and ensure stronger financial and social security measures for senior citizens.

The Srinagar submission formed part of a larger nationwide effort aimed at drawing urgent attention to pension-related concerns and seeking timely intervention from authorities.

India rejects Pakistan remarks on UAPA verdict, calls them “frivolous narratives”

India rejects Pakistan remarks on UAPA verdict, calls them “frivolous narratives”

New Delhi, Mar 25: India on Wednesday strongly rejected Pakistan’s comments on recent judicial proceedings involving a banned terror outfit, following a Delhi court verdict sentencing Kashmiri separatist leader Asiya Andrabi to life imprisonment under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Responding to media queries, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “We categorically reject the statement issued by Pakistan in support of a banned terrorist organization and its members. Pakistan has no locus standi to comment on matters internal to India or its judicial processes. However, one is not surprised that a country, which has long been sponsoring terrorism, has come up with such a statement condoning violence and killing of innocent people.”

He further added: “Instead of peddling lies and frivolous narratives, Pakistan should introspect on the grave and systematic human rights violations it continues to perpetrate.”

The response came after Pakistan criticised the verdict, calling it a “grave miscarriage of justice” and alleging suppression of rights in Jammu and Kashmir. On Tuesday, a Delhi court sentenced Andrabi, chief of the banned Dukhtaran-e-Millat, to life imprisonment, while her associates Fehmeeda and Nasreen were awarded 30-year jail terms. In its detailed order, the court held that the accused had conspired for the secession of Kashmir from India, citing video and social media evidence presented by the National Investigation Agency.

Antiquities are objects, art works or relics from the ancient past, including coins, sculptures and manuscripts.

NMMA has the mandate of preparing a database of the diverse Indian antiquities as defined in The Antiquities and Art Treasures (AAT) Act 1972, apart from facilitating convenient study to scholars, researchers. Archaeological Survey of India is the nodal agency of NMMA.

76889 antiquities of Jammu and Kashmir are among 17,20,139 antiquities which have been digitised across the country so far, since 2007.

As per the information shared by the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, the Government of India established the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA) in 2007 to prepare two national registers on the documentation and digitization of unprotected monuments (Built Heritage and Sites) and antiquities across the length and breadth of the country.

“So far, the NMMA has documented 1.84 lakhs Monuments (Built Heritage & Sites) and 17.20 lakhs antiquities.
