Baba Nagri Urs concludes

Wangath (Kangan), Jun 8: The two-day annual Urs of HazratMianNizam-ud-Din Kiyanvi (RA) concluded here on Monday with ‘DuaMajlis’ (special prayers) in the morning.

The 130th annual Urs which commenced here at Baba Nagri in Kangan area of Ganderbal district on Sunday was observed with great religious fervour and gaiety in which tens of thousands of devotees from different parts of the Jammu and Kashmir and outside participated.

The two-day annual Urs is observed in the first fortnight of June every year with thousands of devotees from within and outside J&K thronging the two-day event. Night-long prayers were held during the Urs and Quran Khawani, Darood-e-Azkar, and Khatmat-ul-Mozamat were held.

Hundreds of vehicles carrying thousands of devotees had started reaching here from last couple of days to participate in the annual Urs and pay obeisance at the shrine situated at the base of a mountain in a scenic setting. Surrounded by still surviving forests, the shrine and its vicinity become the hub of religious activities every year.

The Urs dates back to 19th century, with this year being the 130th annual Urs.

During recent years, the enthusiasm has only been growing.

On the concluding day of Urs, a joint prayer was held in which devotees prayed for peace, prosperity, unity, brotherhood, and communal harmony in J&K.

The devotees who had come from different areas of J&K, particularly Rajouri, Doda, Udhampur, Poonch, Kishtwar, Shopian, Kathua, Doda, Anantnag, Kupwara, Bandipora, and Baramulla visit the shrine every year.

“I have been visiting this place for last 10 years,” a devotee Syed Zulfikar from Poonch said.

Baba Ji Sahib (RA) had migrated to this place from Hazara division of Pakistan some 122 years ago on the instructions of his teacher.

Baba Ji had come to Kashmir at the age of 30.

He lived here for almost 33 years and passed away at the age of 63.

SajadaNasheen Baba Ji SahabLarvi, Wangath, MianAltaf Ahmad, who is the son of renowned religious personality and veteran Gujjar leader late Mian Bashir Ahmad, and scores of Islamic scholars participated in the congregation.

MianAltaf urged the faithful to follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), maintain communal harmony, and protect youth from the scourge of drugs.

He praised the late saint’s legacy of service and scholarship and noted a surge in attendance this year.

Altaf highlighted the life and contribution of Hazrat Baba Nizam-ud-Din (RA) and late Mian Bashir Ahmad Larvi.

He emphasised participants to work for the welfare of humanity and follow the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (SAW).

Calling for maintaining brotherhood and amity, Altaf advised devotees to offer Nimaz regularly.

In a message to youth, he advised them to stay away from social evils, particularly drug addiction, and be respectful.

Altaf also hailed the 100-day NashaMuktAbhiyan J&K by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and said that it needs a united effort to curb this menace.

He asked the parents to keep watch on their children and guide them to right path and better future.

Various religious scholars also spoke and threw light on teachings and religious work rendered by Baba Ji during his life for the welfare of mankind.

Speaking on the saint’s life, Maulana Ghulam MohiuddinNaqashbandi recalled that MianNizamuddinKiyanwi (RA), a Kashmiri by origin, had migrated to Hazara in present-day Pakistan before returning to Baba Nagri to preach Islam for over three decades.

A prolific scholar, he authored works on Fiqh and Sufism, including Asrar-e-Kabaree and Malfoozat-e-Nizame.

The Urs coincides with the nomadic Gujjar migration, and many tribespeople arrived with livestock to offer prayers.

Devotees, including families in traditional attire, lined the roads leading to the shrine.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, MianAltaf said that a sea of people from across Jammu and Kashmir attended this year’s Urs.

He said that the number of devotees was massive and was increasing every year.

He said that prayers were held for peace, prosperity, and harmony to prevail in the Jammu and Kashmir.

Altaf thanked the administration for facilitating devotees during the Urs.

“Our management was well-prepared and full-fledged arrangements were made for locals to prevent inconvenience,” he said.

The civil administration, J&K Police, Traffic Police Rural, and Health Department had made arrangements for the Urs.

According to the shrine management, a 24-hour free community kitchen was put in place for the devotees visiting here throughout the year.

“The shrine management on Urs days arranges a special langar where food for thousands of people is prepared,” Mian Mehhar Ali, who was looking after the arrangements, told Greater Kashmir.

Air Commodore Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, an IAF pilot and a Gaganyatri, is also among the recipients of the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

Murmu conferred seven Kirti Chakras, including two posthumously; 15 Vir Chakras, including three posthumously; and 29 Shaurya Chakras, including one posthumously, to the personnel of the defence forces, Central Armed Police Forces and state or Union Territory police forces during phase-I of the Defence Investiture Ceremony hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the defence ministry said.

Lt Commander Dilna K and Lt Commander Roopa A of the Navy are among the Shaurya Chakras recipients.

The President presented the gallantry award to them for their exemplary endurance, bravery and devotion to duty in Navika Sagar Parikrama II.

Lt Commander Roopa A, along with Lt Commander Dilna K, sailed over 25,600 nautical miles through the Indian, Pacific, Atlantic and Southern Oceans.

“While navigating through the perilous Drake Passage in stormy conditions that caused the boat to heel severely, regaining control required exceptional skill and extraordinary courage. During the expedition, they also became the first Indians to reach Point Nemo, the oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility, by sailboat,” reads the citation in a post on X by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundarama of Rashtriya Rifles, Naib Subedar Doleshwar Subba of Para (Special Forces), Major Arshdeep Singh of Assam Rifles and Captain Lalrinawma Sailo of Para (Special Forces) have also been conferred the Kirti Chakra, according to the list of awardees shared by the government.

In April 2025, during a combing and search operation in Dima Hasao, South Assam, he confronted an armed cadre at close quarters and single-handedly neutralised him. The operation resulted in the elimination of three armed cadres and the recovery of weapons and war-like stores,” it said.

Another post said the President presents the Shaurya Chakra to Major Leishangthem Deepak Singh, 11 Para (Special Forces), for his exceptional bravery.

“Acting on intelligence regarding the kidnapping of two innocent civilians, he neutralised a terrorist at very close range and shielded a kidnapped civilian with his own body. This resulted in the neutralisation of two hardcore cadres and the rescue of an innocent civilian,” it said.

“President Droupadi Murmu presents Shaurya Chakra to Lieutenant Colonel Neetesh Bharti Shukla, 19th Battalion, The Sikh Regiment, for planning and executing a clinical operation without own casualty. On receipt of specific input regarding infiltration by a group of terrorists, Lieutenant Colonel Shukla laid an ambush along the Line of Control in July 2024. The operation eliminated three heavily armed foreign terrorists,” the Rashtrapati Bhavan posted.

Gold drops Rs 1,100, silver extends slide as oil surge stokes inflation fears

Gold drops Rs 1,100, silver extends slide as oil surge stokes inflation fears

New Delhi, Jun 8: Gold prices declined by Rs 1,100 to Rs 1.58 lakh per 10 grams in the national capital on Monday, tracking losses in global markets amid rising crude oil rates and heightened concerns over inflation.

According to local marketmen, the yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity dropped Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,58,800 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) from Friday’s closing level of Rs 1,59,900 per 10 grams.

Silver also remained under pressure, falling Rs 5,000 to Rs 2,55,700 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes). The white metal had settled at Rs 2,60,700 per kg in the previous session.

Analysts said the latest drop in precious metals marks a continuation of bullion’s recent struggles as investors increasingly focus on the inflationary impact of higher energy prices rather than the metals’ traditional safe-haven appeal.

“Gold and silver prices declined on Monday amid rising concerns over inflation and interest rates, driven by stronger-than-expected US economic data, which has diminished the safe-haven appeal of these precious metals,” Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, said.

Additionally, geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly recent developments involving Israel, have further fuelled market volatility, impacting investor sentiment, he added.

In the international markets, spot gold fell nearly 1 per cent to USD 4,291.79 per ounce, while silver declined 1.34 per cent to USD 66.93 per ounce.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices advanced by nearly 5 per cent to USD 97.44 per barrel in global markets.

“The sharp drop in gold prices is a reaction to a blowout US jobs report, which signals that interest rates might remain higher for longer, strengthening the dollar and pulling money away from precious metals,” Rajkumar Subramanian, Head – Product & Family Office, PL Wealth, said.

Precious metals prices in the near term are likely to remain volatile ahead of upcoming US inflation data and Federal Reserve updates, but gold continues to be a critical long-term hedge against inflation, he added.

Multi-layer security net planned for safety of Amarnath pilgrims in Kathua

Jammu, Jun 8: As thousands of pilgrims gear up for the annual pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine next month, police in Kathua have activated a multi-layered security grid, blending drone surveillance, highway domination and intensified ground-level checks along the yatra route.

At a security-review-cum-coordination meeting at district police lines Kathua on Monday, Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma directed officers to maintain maximum alertness and leave no room for complacency during the 57-day yatra which is starting on July 3.

The meeting brought together officers from the police, Army, BSF, CRPF and intelligence agencies to fine-tune a coordinated security strategy aimed at ensuring foolproof arrangements without compromising pilgrim convenience, a police spokesman said.

Giving a comprehensive presentation on the yatra’s security architecture including surveillance, convoy management, QRT deployment and emergency response preparedness, the SSP emphasised on heightened vigilance, seamless coordination, strict compliance with security protocols and a pilgrim-friendly environment.

She directed the supervisory officers to strengthen security arrangements through regular inspection of Langars, lodgement centres, and other yatra-related facilities, while maintaining close surveillance over suspicious movements and anti-national elements.

Officers present at the meeting were also instructed to intensify intelligence generation, promptly share actionable inputs, and maintain close coordination with intelligence agencies and other stakeholders to ensure a robust and proactive security grid, a spokesperson said.

He said directions were issued to ensure security along the Border National Highway (NHW) and Railway Track with special focus on round-the-clock domination, checking points, and area domination patrols.

Emphasis was also laid on completing census and tenant verification drives along NHW, at hotels and dhabas, and among factory workers to rule out the presence of any anti-national elements in the vicinity of the Yatra route, the spokesperson said.

The Kathua SSP emphasised strengthening surveillance and response capabilities by intensifying drone-based monitoring, installation of X-Ray machines, and deploying Dog Squads for anti-sabotage checks at vital installations, including Base Camp Lakhanpur and yatra locations, and ensuring the operational readiness of QRTs.

She also stressed seamless inter-agency coordination among police, CAPFs, civil administration, traffic police, health services, and other departments, with a focus on prompt information sharing, joint preparedness, and effective response to any exigency.

Officers were also directed to ensure effective management and security of yatra mini-convoys and to enhance CCTV coverage at all important Yatra locations with dedicated 24×7 monitoring.

Sharma reiterated the need for high operational readiness and coordinated efforts to ensure the safe, smooth, and successful conduct of the yatra.

In the urgent advisory, the Indian Embassy in Iran reiterated its earlier advice to all Indian nationals to avoid travel to Iran.

“In view of the latest developments in the region, the Embassy reiterates its earlier advice to all Indian Nationals to avoid any travel to Iran,” the advisory stated on X.

“Indian Nationals presently in Iran are also advised to exit the country by available means of transport,” it said.

LG visits Mubarak Mandi heritage complex in Jammu, inspects damage to ancient temple

LG visits Mubarak Mandi heritage complex in Jammu, inspects damage to ancient temple

Jammu, Jun 8: Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday visited the Mubarak Mandi heritage complex in old city here and also inspected the damage caused to an ancient temple in its close vicinity.

Accompanied by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, the Lt Governor reviewed the ongoing restoration and conservation works at the heritage complex and the temple.

A portion of the wall of the nearly 200-year-old Gadadhar temple collapsed outside the Mubarak Mandi heritage complex on June 4 following rain, triggering concerns among locals who blamed the ongoing excavation and restoration work near the shrine for the collapse.

Talking to reporters, Dulloo said renovation of 11 buildings at the heritage complex is underway, with nine to 10 projects expected to be completed by March 2027.

Mubarak Mandi, located in the heart of the old walled city overlooking the Tawi river, was the royal residence of the Dogra dynasty rulers till 1925 before the last Maharaja moved to Hari Niwas palace in the northern part of Jammu.

In 2005, Mubarak Mandi was declared as a protected monument and subsequently Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society (MMJHS) was constituted next year to take over the complex for its protection, preservation, maintenance and restoration works.

The first vision document for its conservation was prepared by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) in 2008 and a comprehensive master plan was later prepared and approved in 2019.

Primarily, the complex is zoned out in six zones — Public Zone, Knowledge Centre, Interpretation and Collection Galleries, Lifestyle, Experiential Spaces and Crafts Bazaar.

Under this master plan an amount of Rs 144.15 crore is to be spent on different sub-projects of this heritage complex.

The work on few sub-projects has been completed and the work on other sub-projects is would be taken up shortly for their completion on time.

The temple dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Gulab Singh in the mid-19th century. It is managed by the Dharmarth Trust.

“Since there was a pressing need for parking in the area, a parking facility is being constructed by Smart City Limited. During the course of this work, a slab adjoining the temple collapsed. Repair work has already begun and is progressing, and it is expected to be completed within a few days,” the chief secretary said.

He said the effort of Smart City Limited is to create a parking facility with space for at least 200 vehicles.

The LG reviewed the ongoing repair and renovation works which are underway on a total of 11 buildings, he said.

Around nine or 10 of these projects have achieved approximately 80 to 90 percent completion and are expected to be completed by March 2027.

In addition, Dulloo said there are plans to take up five new projects, including the development of facilities such as a laser show, light-and-sound show, and other visitor amenities.

On the delay in completion of the project, Dulloo attributed it to inadequate funding in the past, saying the pace of work had accelerated over the last four to five years after funds started becoming available.

“Some of the restoration work was carried out by the Archaeological Survey (of India) authorities while the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Society has also undertaken a number of projects and done good work.

Highlighting the progress made so far, Dulloo said several facilities, including a restaurant, cafe and library, have been developed as part of the restoration project, and assured that further conservation and renovation works would be taken up wherever necessary.

INDIA bloc leaders stress need to ‘safeguard democratic values’ as opposition meet gets underway

INDIA bloc leaders stress need to ‘safeguard democratic values’ as opposition meet gets underway

New Delhi, June 08: Opposition leaders on Monday emphasised the need to safeguard democratic values and address issues related to people’s livelihood as a key meeting of the INDIA bloc began against the backdrop of differences emerging among some of its constituents.

Leaders arriving for the meeting at the Constitution Club in Delhi indicated that discussions on contentious matters would take place during the deliberations.

Asked about the agenda of the meeting, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said decisions would be taken collectively by alliance partners.

“We will decide the agenda in the meeting,” Yadav told reporters, adding that efforts would be made to move towards a “bandhu rashtra”. It was important to safeguard democratic values, he said.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav declined to comment on the likely outcomes of the meeting, saying details would emerge after discussions among alliance partners.

CPI general secretary D Raja said the meeting was significant as it was being held after a considerable gap and at a time when constituent parties had several issues requiring discussion.

“There is no particular agenda, but there are issues which political parties have. Left parties do have issues concerning the livelihood of the people and issues confronting the nation as a whole,” Raja said.

Recalling that the opposition alliance had come together with the call of “BJP Hatao, Desh Bachao”, Raja said the meeting would deliberate on how constituent parties could work together with mutual trust and mutual respect while giving priority to issues concerning ordinary people.

He also referred to concerns raised by some alliance partners over the conduct of parties in states and said opposition leaders should avoid actions that deepen mistrust within the coalition.

The meeting comes amid visible strains within the opposition alliance.

In a recent letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby objected to statements made by Congress leaders, including Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, during the Kerala election campaign, in which they accused the Left party of colluding with the BJP.

The CPI(M) has maintained that public attacks among constituents undermine opposition unity and weaken efforts to take on the BJP collectively.

The alliance is also meeting without the participation of the DMK, which has accused the Congress of “betrayal” in Tamil Nadu.

The AAP, which had already announced that it was no longer part of the INDIA alliance, is also not attending the meeting.

7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Philippines causes 4 deaths, damage and tsunami

7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Philippines causes 4 deaths, damage and tsunami

Manila, June 08: An offshore magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the southern Philippines early Monday, damaging buildings and a key access bridge in a large southern city and setting off a 1-metre (3-foot) tsunami that washed ashore on nearby coasts. At least four people were killed and more than 200 others injured, officials said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged people to go to higher ground in Philippine areas vulnerable to a tsunami, and Indonesian and Malaysian authorities also issued warnings to their nearby coastal areas.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the threat of a tsunami had largely passed about five hours after the 7:37 am quake. But it still urged people to stay alert and to heed warnings from local authorities as sea levels may fluctuate for a few more hours.

The strongest quake to strike the Philippines this year was centred at sea about 13 kilometres southwest of General Santos, a city of more than 700,000 people that is a hub for tuna processing and other commerce in the southern Mindanao region of the archipelago nation.

The Philippine leader said disaster-response agencies were on standby to respond. “The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind,” Marcos said.

Damage and at least 4 deaths in Philippines

At least three people were killed and 130 others were injured in General Santos, where at least a few small buildings partially collapsed and several structures, including a key access bridge, sustained dangerous cracks, Rod Sosmeña, regional director of the Office of Civil Defence, told The Associated Press.

The Department of Health said another person died in Davao Oriental province due to the quake.

There were no immediate reports of people being trapped in partially collapsed structures in General Santos due to the quake, said Sosmeña, who was being driven to work when the ground violently shook.

“Our pickup truck suddenly jerked and I thought we had a flat tire,” Sosmeña the AP by telephone from General Santos. “People dashed out of houses into the streets.”

The international airport in General Santos was temporarily shut due to the earthquake and 17 domestic flights were cancelled, civil aviation officials said.

Ednar Dayanghirang, director of the Office of Civil Defence in a nearby southern region, said more than 100 students attending morning flag-raising ceremonies sustained bruises and some fainted in panic at different grade and high schools.

“I myself could hardly stand and keep my balance when the ground shook as I was leaving my house,” Dayanghirang told the AP by telephone from southern Davao, a major port city in the southern Philippines.

DZRH radio station in Manila reported that a small commercial building housing its provincial branch partly collapsed and staffers dashed to the ground floor without injuries. It wasn’t clear if other people were trapped in the rubble of the four-storey office building. Debris also fell from other buildings, hitting tricycle taxis parked below.

The quake was caused by movement in the Cotabato Trench at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

“It’s a major earthquake and we’re expecting damages and we’ve already seen some damaged buildings based on videos we’ve seen,” institute director Teresito Bacolcol told AP.

Tsunami waves near 3 feet measured

Waves of 1-metre (3-feet) were monitored in the Philippine provinces of Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani by land-based tsunami watch stations, Bacolcol said. Smaller waves were monitored in at least one other province, he said.

“Please heed the tsunami warning. Move to higher ground now. Do not wait. Your life is more important than anything left behind,” Marcos told people in quake-hit provinces.

Malaysia’s Meteorological Department issued a tsunami warning for Sabah state on Borneo island. Sabah is just a boat ride away from southern Philippines. An 83-centimetre (2.7-feet) tsunami was measured by a gauge off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island.

The PTWC said smaller sea changes were possible in Papua New Guinea and in places in the western Pacific. There was no threat for Hawaii.

Aftershocks up to 6.5 magnitude were measured by the US Geological Survey. It reported the depth of the original quake at 55 kilometres. Variations in measurements by different agencies are common in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake.

The Philippines, one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, is often hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the ocean. The archipelago is also lashed by about 20 typhoons and tropical storms each year.
