Kashmir tourism hit hard since April 22, but we must bounce back: Dr. Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, Sep 13: National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Sunday said the April 22 incident dealt a heavy blow to Kashmir’s tourism industry, but stressed that restoring public confidence and reviving tourism remain vital for the valley’s economy.

Speaking to news wire PTI, Dr. Farooq, “Since the April 22 episode, tourism has suffered a severe setback. Tourism is essential for Kashmir’s economy. The poor and the well-off alike depend on it.

Winters shut us down for six “months; all the income is earned in the summer months and spent during winter. That’s why, after April 22, we have tried hard to remove fear among the people of the valley.”

The incident on (22 april) happened it was not our doing but all of Kashmir stood against it.”

Noting efforts to bring visitors back, he welcomed initiatives aimed at projecting normalcy. “It is good that our friends are promoting events they even organised the gold tournament so a message goes out at all times that conditions here are improving. Come and enjoy our hospitality,” he said.

On the long-standing demand for restoration of statehood, Dr. Farooq expressed cautious optimism. “God willing, we hope this will happen. Delhi will pay attention to it. The Prime Minister will see the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to have their statehood restored,” he told reporters.

When asked about periodic disruptions that follow phases of calm citing controversies around waqf and the Doda incident Dr. Farooq observed that such incidents have been part of the region’s troubles for decades.

“These things will continue to occur; we have suffered since 1947. This is not a new phenomenon, but we must come out of it. Nothing is static. I hope conditions improve here. Our leaders must understand that to make things better we must also pay heed to the aspirations of our people,” he said. (KNC)

DC Doda reviews essential supplies amid curfew, appeals for peace

Doda, Sep 13: Even as restrictions remained in place, Deputy Commissioner Doda, Harvinder Singh, inspected the main market of Doda town to assess the availability of essential supplies and functioning of trade activities.

During his visit, the DC interacted with shopkeepers and locals, assuring them that the administration is committed to ensuring uninterrupted availability of food grains, medicines, and daily-use commodities. He appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony in the district.

Officials of the district administration said the overall situation has remained peaceful, and life is gradually limping back to normalcy. However, internet services continue to remain suspended, and schools are yet to reopen in the district.

The curfew in Doda was imposed after the arrest of sitting MLA Mehraj Malik, which had sparked protests and heightened tensions earlier this week. Authorities said security arrangements remain in place to prevent any untoward incident.

The district administration reiterated that peace and cooperation from the public are crucial for the restoration of normal life in the region. [KNT]

MHA slams states, UTs for lax enforcement of ‘Support to Poor Prisoners’ scheme

Srinagar, Sep 13: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Srinagar Zone, has dismantled a major narcotics smuggling network in South Kashmir with the arrest of three persons, including a key supplier and two habitual offenders.

Officials said the operation was carried out on the basis of specific intelligence inputs in the Bijbehara area of Anantnag district on 19 August. The raid resulted in the recovery of about 10.735 kilograms of charas, one of the largest seizures of the current year, and the arrest of three accused: Firdous, a resident of Bijbehara, Jan Mohammad Baba of Lal Bazaar, Srinagar, and Mohammad Lateef of Srigufwara, Anantnag.

Verification of their background revealed that Firdous had previously been booked under the NDPS Act in cases registered at Police Station Bijbehara and NCB Jammu, while Jan Mohammad Baba was also earlier involved in a case registered by NCB Jammu. Investigations further established that the seized consignment was procured from Mohammad Lateef, who was facilitating its inter-state transportation through illicit channels.

The establishment of the NCB office in Srinagar, officials said, is part of the Union Government’s wider strategy to strengthen anti-narcotics enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir. They added that NCB remains committed to disrupting the drug trade, protecting youth from its harmful impact, and ensuring stronger coordination among enforcement agencies across the Union Territory.

Authorities have appealed to citizens to cooperate in the fight against drug trafficking and share information about narcotics activities through the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline number 1933, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept confidential. [KNT]

India votes in favour of UNGA resolution on Palestine endorsing two-state solution

United Nations, Sep 12: India on Friday voted in favour of a resolution in the UN General Assembly that endorses the ‘New York Declaration’ on peaceful settlement of the Palestine issue and implementation of the two-state solution.

The resolution, introduced by France, was adopted with an overwhelming 142 nations voting in favour, 10 against and 12 abstentions. Those voting against included Argentina, Hungary, Israel and the US.

India was among the 142 nations that voted in favour of the resolution titled ‘Endorsement of the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution’.

The declaration was circulated at a high-level international conference held in July at the UN headquarters and co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.

In the declaration, the leaders “agreed to take collective action to end the war in Gaza, to achieve a just, peaceful and lasting settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the effective implementation of the two-state solution, and to build a better future for Palestinians, Israelis and all peoples of the region”.

The declaration called on the Israeli leadership to issue a clear public commitment to the two-state solution, including a sovereign, and viable Palestinian State.

It also called on Israel to “immediately end violence and incitement against Palestinians, to immediately halt all settlement, land grabs and annexation activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, publicly renounce any annexation project or settlement policy, and put an end to settlers’ violence”.

It also reaffirmed “support for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination”.

“Recent developments have highlighted, once again, and more than ever, the terrifying human toll and the grave implications for regional and international peace and security of the persistence of the Middle East conflict,” the declaration said.

“Absent decisive measures towards the two-state solution and robust international guarantees, the conflict will deepen and regional peace will remain elusive,” it added.

Asserting that “the war in Gaza must end now”, the declaration further said that, “Gaza is an integral part of a Palestinian State and must be unified with the West Bank. There must be no occupation, siege, territorial reduction, or forced displacement.”

Sopore fruit growers protest losses, urge LG to clear highway for apple trucks

Sopore, Sept 13: Asia’s second-largest fruit mandi, located in Sopore, witnessed a peaceful protest today as hundreds of fruit growers and traders gathered to express deep concern over the massive losses incurred due to the continuous blockade of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Addressing the media, President of the Sopore Fruit Mandi Association, Fayaz Ahmad Malik, painted a grim picture of the crisis. He revealed that thousands of fruit-laden trucks have been stranded for days on the national highway, resulting in estimated losses ranging between ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 crore. “The perishable nature of the produce means every hour of delay is causing irreversible damage to the livelihood of thousands of growers,” Malik said.

In a fervent appeal to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Malik urged the administration to immediately provide a two-day exclusive traffic clearance window for fruit-laden vehicles heading toward Jammu. He stressed that such a measure is essential to prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control.

Malik also called for the urgent restoration of train services from Sopore, arguing that rail connectivity could act as a lifeline for the Valley’s fruit industry. “Kashmir is a major exporter of apples and other horticultural produce. Without reliable transportation, the entire sector is collapsing under financial stress,” he added.

The protesting growers lamented that this season has been one of the worst in recent memory, as repeated disruptions in transportation have left them battling heavy losses and mounting debts. They appealed to the government to step in without delay, warning that any further negligence could cripple the horticulture sector, which is the backbone of the local economy.

The protest concluded peacefully, but with a clear message: unless immediate action is taken, the crisis in Asia’s second largest fruit mandi may snowball into a catastrophe for Kashmir’s agrarian community

UN assembly votes overwhelmingly to back two-state solution to Israel-Palestinian conflict

United Nations, Sep 13: The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Friday to support a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict and urge Israel to commit to a Palestinian state, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vehemently opposes.

The 193-member world body approved a nonbinding resolution endorsing the “New York Declaration,” which sets out a phased plan to end the nearly 80-year conflict. The vote was 142-10 with 12 abstentions.

Hours before the vote, Netanyahu said, “There will be no Palestinian state.” He spoke at the signing of an agreement to expand settlements that will divide the West Bank, which the Palestinians insist must be part of their state, saying, “This place belongs to us.”

The resolution was sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia, who co-chaired a high-level conference on implementing a two-state solution in late July, where the declaration was approved.

The nearly two-year war in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict are expected to be at the top of the agenda of world leaders at their annual gathering at the General Assembly starting on Sept 22. The Palestinians say they hope at least 10 more countries will recognise the state of Palestine, adding to the more than 145 countries that already do.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian UN ambassador, said the support for the resolution reflects “the yearning of almost everyone, the international community, to open the door for the option of peace.”

Without naming Israel, he said, “We invite a party that is still pushing the option of war and destruction, and attempts to eliminate the Palestinian people and steal their land, to listen to the sound of reason — to the sound of the logic of dealing with this issue peacefully, and for the overwhelming message that has resonated in this General Assembly today.”

But Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon dismissed the resolution as “theatre,” saying the only beneficiary is Hamas.

“This one-sided declaration will not be remembered as a step toward peace, only as another hollow gesture that weakens this assembly’s credibility,” he said.

The United States, Israel’s closest ally, reiterated its opposition to the New York Declaration and the General Assembly resolution endorsing implementation of the two-state solution.

The resolution “is yet another misguided and ill-timed publicity stunt that undermines serious diplomatic efforts to end the conflict,” US Mission counselor Morgan Ortagas said. “Make no mistake, this resolution is a gift to Hamas.”

The declaration condemns “the attacks committed by Hamas against civilians” in southern Israel on Oct 7, 2023, a rare condemnation by Arab nations of Hamas.

The Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people, mainly Israeli civilians, and took about 250 hostage. Of those, 48 are still being held, including about 20 who are believed to be alive.

It also condemns Israel’s attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Gaza and its “siege and starvation, which have produced a devastating humanitarian catastrophe and protection crisis.” Israel’s offensive against Hamas has killed over 64,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The declaration envisions the Palestinian Authority governing and controlling all Palestinian territory, with a transitional administrative committee immediately established under its umbrella after a ceasefire in Gaza.

“In the context of ending the war in Gaza, Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority,” the declaration says.

It also supports deployment of “a temporary international stabilisation mission” operating under UN auspices to protect Palestinian civilians, support the transfer of security to the Palestinian Authority and provide security guarantees for Palestine and Israel — “including monitoring of the ceasefire and of a future peace agreement.”

The declaration urges countries to recognise the state of Palestine, calling this “an essential and indispensable component of the achievement of the two-state solution.” Without naming Israel but clearly referring to it, the document says “illegal unilateral actions are posing an existential threat to the realisation of the independent state of Palestine.” AP

Border residents welcome LG Sinha’s initiative to rebuild houses damaged by Pak shelling, recent floods

Jammu, Sep 13: Residents along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir have welcomed the initiative of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to get the new houses constructed for families affected by Pakistan shelling,’ the recent floods and terrorism.

The High-Range Rural Development Society (HRDS) India in collaboration with the Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir will build more than 1500 houses for the victims of Pakistan shelling, recent floods and the terrorism.

“We lived for years amid rubble and fear. The news of new houses being built feels like a sunrise after a long, dark night, giving us hope for the future,” residents of frontier areas told KNO over phone.

“Cross-border shelling destroyed walls, roofs, and the peace we once had. Hearing that new houses will be constructed for those affected by Pakistan shelling gives us hope that our children can grow up without fear of the next attack,” said Fatima Bano from Poonch.

Residents in Poonch, Uri and Karnah Tangdar welcomed the announcement.

Mohammad Iqbal from Poonch, whose home was damaged during the cross-border shelling in May, said, “Finally, we will have a safe home for our children after all these months of living in temporary shelters.”

“We hope the government begins construction of these houses soon. This is a much-needed relief for border residents who lost their homes during shelling,” he said.

Mehar Bano from Uri said, “Our house was partially destroyed by Pak shelling. This project gives us hope that we can start afresh without fear of the past returning.”

Rashid Ahmad from Karnah Tangdar said, “We have waited for months for support. Many houses in our area were damaged, and some residents lost relatives during the shelling. No compensation was provided earlier, so the announcement that new houses will be constructed for sufferers is a welcome step for us and will help us rebuild our lives with dignity.”

Suhail Ahmad, another resident from Poonch, said, “The monthly health check-ups and digital connectivity will improve our standard of living. It is not just a house but a complete support system.”

Officials said the initiative is expected to be completed in phases, prioritizing families who suffered the most damage. The project has been welcomed as a major step toward restoring normalcy and security for those living along the LoC.

Pertinently, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday presided over the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between HRDS India and the divisional administrations. “Construction of houses is more than just putting up structures. It is about building dreams and providing a fresh start for affected families,” he said, adding that the initiative aims to support families whose homes were damaged by natural calamities and unprovoked shelling on civilian populations.

The HRDS India will provide three-bedroom “Smart Houses” with modern features ensuring comfort and safety.

Jitendra Singh visits flood-hit border villages, distributes relief material in J&K

Jammu, Sep 12: Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Friday visited the flood-affected villages along the International Border in Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir, and distributed relief material. He also assured them of full government support for rehabilitation.

Singh visited the Paharpur village in Kathua, and border outposts at Ramgarh, Tanwar, and Kamore in Kathua and Samba. He interacted with flood victims, assessed crop and property damage, and directed the district administration to expedite damage assessments for early compensation, a spokesperson said.

Highlighting government efforts, Singh said nano-technology-based mechanism worth Rs 50 lakh have been deployed to aid border residents.

He also handed over mobile and domestic water-purifying units to ensure safe drinking water and prevent water-borne diseases in the affected areas.

Singh introduced a nano-technology water filter plant for the flood-affected areas. The latest water filter technology, developed by CSIR IIM Jammu, uses nano-technology, he said.

Singh stated that the technology will be introduced and set up in flood-affected villages to provide safe water to villagers.

“Here, water has filled the area, and the farming fields are submerged… we need to assess the damage. Fortunately, no one was physically harmed. Now, we must prevent any disease or epidemic spread afterwards,” he said.

Highlighting relief measures, he added, “In the last 5-6 days, DC sir and I researched arrangements, exploring institutes in Maharashtra. I believe this is the first time water filter plants are used here. Based on modern nanotechnology, DC sir has provided a water filter plant. It is a Rs 50 lakh modern machine that purifies 3,000 litres of water, enough for a village.”

During the visit, Singh also praised the role of BSF personnel, stating they reached victims even before the local administration and played a critical role in rescue and relief operations.
