Railways undertake electronic interlocking in Jammu-Udhampur section, 4 trains cancelled

Jammu, June 6: The Northern Railway’s Jammu division has upgraded major infrastructure by commissioning an advanced electronic interlocking (EI) system at Bajalta station on the Jammu Tawi-Udhampur section to enhance passenger safety and ensure smoother train operations, officials said on Saturday.

Officials said due to the ongoing work, four trains have been cancelled, and six are running late.

The project also includes integration of the railway siding being developed for BPCL, IOCL and HPCL’s common user facility (CUF) at Bajalta, they said.

“In connection with the work, a pre-non-interlocking and non-interlocking block will remain in force from June 7 to June 11,” they said.

According to railway officials, the EI system will make the operation of signals and points fully computer-controlled, significantly improving safety standards, reducing the scope for human error and facilitating faster train movements.

Officials said the new railway siding at Bajalta is also expected to strengthen fuel logistics and improve petroleum supply infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials said several trains will remain cancelled due to the work.

They said three trains (DMUs) will be cancelled from June 8 to June 10, while train number 74906 will remain cancelled from June 9 to June 11.

In addition, six trains are expected to run late en route during this period, they said.

Railway authorities advised passengers to check the latest train status before commencing their journey through the Rail Madad helpline 139, the NTES mobile application or station enquiry counters.

Expressing regret for the temporary inconvenience, the railway administration said the work is essential for providing faster, safer and more reliable rail services in the future, reaffirming Jammu Division’s commitment to passenger convenience and operational safety.

UNSC membership huge responsibility, not forum for peddling biased, false narratives: India slams Pak

United Nations, Jun 6: India has slammed Pakistan for its “unwarranted reference” to Jammu and Kashmir at the UN, telling the current non-permanent member of the global body that it was a huge responsibility and not a forum for peddling “biased and false narratives”.

“The unwarranted reference by Pakistan to a matter strictly internal to India, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has compelled me to respond,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said on Friday.

The strong retort by Harish came after Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in his remarks in the UN General Assembly on Friday on the ‘Annual Report of the Security Council’.

Pakistan, which constantly raises the issue of Jammu and Kashmir as well as other topics internal to India at various UN platforms, currently sits in the Security Council as a non-permanent member and its tenure will end this year.

Harish said in the UNGA hall that Pakistan has decided not to spare this forum either from their characteristic misuse of august UN platforms for their divisive political interests.

“Abuse of its presence on the Security Council by Pakistan, including through the circulation of several misinformed and misleading communications also testifies to this counter-productive approach. I would like to remind Pakistan that being a member of the UN Security Council is a huge responsibility. It is not a forum for peddling biased and false narratives,” Harish said.

Making it clear that Jammu and Kashmir was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India, Harish emphasised that any assertions to the contrary are baseless, devoid of and inconsistent with historical facts.

“Empty rhetoric and hollow claims by Pakistan would not change this fundamental reality. In the interest of time of the wider UN membership, I would not delve any further into this,” he said.

The Indian envoy also pointed out that the international community recognises the importance of reform of the Security Council to make it fit-for-purpose to handle contemporary and future challenges we face.

“The current structure reflects geopolitical realities of 1945. Retaining the staus quo has so far not enabled effective functioning of the Security Council and cannot do so in future,” he said.

He noted that the “marginal” reform in the 1960s that expanded only the non-permanent category has not changed the fundamental mode of functioning of the Security Council in any impactful manner.

“Expansion of both permanent and non-permanent categories is central to implementing real and meaningful reform,” he said.

The G4 nations of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan have proposed that Security Council membership needs to be increased from the current 15 to 25 or 26, with a reformed Council consisting of 11 permanent members and 14 or 15 non-permanent members.

Currently, the powerful UN organ consists of five veto-wielding permanent members — China, France, Russia, the UK and the US.

The remaining 10 members are elected to sit at the horseshoe table for two-year terms as non-permanent members. India last sat in the Council as a non-permanent member in 2021-22.

Israeli airstrikes kill 9 including Lebanese army officers after ceasefire deal

Israeli airstrikes kill 9 including Lebanese army officers after ceasefire deal

Beirut, Jun 6: Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Saturday killed nine people, including three members of the Lebanese military, the Lebanese army and state media said, days after the two sides reached a new ceasefire deal.

An airstrike on a vehicle on a road linking the city of Nabatiyeh with the town of Marjayoun killed a brigadier general, a captain and another soldier, the army said, without immediately releasing their names. Another airstrike on the southern village of Saksakiyah killed six people and wounded four, the state-run National News Agency said.

“The continued, deliberate, and repeated Israeli aggression against Lebanon, its people and its army only strengthens our resolve, faith and determination,” the army said in its statement.

It said Israel’s attacks aim to thwart all efforts “to reach a solution that would restore stability, establish a comprehensive ceasefire and lead to the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories.”

The Israeli military confirmed hitting a vehicle and said the incident is being reviewed. The statement added that the vehicle was “moving suspiciously” toward Israeli soldiers near the village of Kfar Tibnit, after the military received “concrete indications” that Hezbollah would direct fire toward Israeli soldiers from the same area.

The military said that it operates against Hezbollah and not against the Lebanese army.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun called the strike “a flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and international law.” He said it came in the context of “ongoing escalation that threatens stability and security in the south (of Lebanon), despite the efforts Lebanon is exerting in the Washington negotiations to put an end to the ongoing Israeli attacks without a deterrent.”

The latest ceasefire announced in Washington came about through US-brokered talks between Israel and Lebanon’s government, which accuses Hezbollah of dragging the country into war and had made efforts to disarm it before the latest hostilities. Hezbollah has refused the truce.

On Friday, Aoun and Lebanon’s prime minister criticised Iran for opposing the latest ceasefire deal between the Lebanese government and Israel, saying their country should not be used by Tehran as a “bargaining chip” in its talks with Washington.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded in a post on X on Saturday by saying that after Aoun’s comments, “one would think it’s Iran that has occupied a fifth of Lebanon, displaced a quarter of Lebanese and is bombing his country on a daily basis.”

“Had Lebanon been a bargaining chip for Iran, we’d have a deal long ago. Save Lebanon from your real foe, Mr President,” Araghchi said in reference to Israel.

The war began on March 2, when Hezbollah fired rockets at northern Israel, two days after Israel and the US began their attacks on Iran. Israel has since launched a ground invasion of Lebanon and carried out wide attacks that have displaced more than 1 million people.

Israeli troops have seized around a fifth of Lebanon, pushing further into the country’s south than at any time since the end of Israel’s 1982-2000 occupation. More than 3,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since the war began. The fighting has killed at least 29 Israeli soldiers and three civilians.

Report on Datasets for State Finance Commissions to be released on June 8

Report on Datasets for State Finance Commissions to be released on June 8

New Delhi, June 06: The Report of the Committee on Datasets for State Finance Commissions is scheduled to be released at a function organized by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on 8th June 2026 in New Delhi. Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, will release the report in the presence of Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, and Dr. Manish Gupta, Associate Professor, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), along with senior officers and distinguished representatives from research institutions, and policy bodies. The release of the report will be followed by a keynote address by the Chief Economic Advisor on data-driven policymaking and evidence-based fiscal governance as essential foundations for empowered local self-government and inclusive development.

The release of this report marks a significant step in the Government’s sustained commitment to strengthening the evidence base for fiscal decentralisation in India. State Finance Commissions, constituted under Article 243-I of the Constitution, are the primary constitutional bodies mandated to review the financial position of Panchayati Raj Institutions and to recommend principles governing the devolution of financial resources to local governments. For these Commissions to discharge this constitutional responsibility with the requisite rigour and credibility, access to reliable, timely, and disaggregated data on local government finances, demographics, infrastructure, service delivery, and asset management is indispensable. The Ministry constituted the Committee on Datasets for State Finance Commissions in response to concerns raised at the Finance Commissions’ Conclave on Devolution to Development, convened in November 2024 under the leadership of the Chairman of the Sixteenth Finance Commission, where the difficulty in accessing comprehensive datasets across departments and agencies was identified as a critical gap affecting the quality and timeliness of State Finance Commission recommendations.

The report offers a structured and comprehensive mapping of the essential datasets required by State Finance Commissions and sets out actionable recommendations to improve data availability, standardisation, interoperability, and institutional capacity across the data ecosystem supporting fiscal analysis at the local level. It is expected to serve as an authoritative reference for State Governments, State Finance Commissions, constitutional bodies, economic researchers, and all those committed to deepening democratic decentralisation and strengthening local public finance in India.

Sanctions threat to India would ‘boomerang’ under PM Modi’s leadership: Putin

Sanctions threat to India would ‘boomerang’ under PM Modi’s leadership: Putin

St Petersburg, June 06: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that any attempt to undermine India’s sovereignty through “threats of sanctions” would “boomerang immediately” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Putin made these remarks at the annual St Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday in response to a question about his comments during an interaction with heads of leading global news agencies, including PTI, on Thursday night.

“India always acts as a sovereign country, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, any potential threats of sanctions would boomerang immediately,” Putin said.

Putin said that he has been in close talks with Prime Minister Modi for a long period, while recalling the time when the Indian leader was banned from entering the United States.

“I know PM Modi will never forget about it,” Putin said. “Now that he is (the) prime minister, all the sanctions have been eliminated, and the relationship between the US and India is developing successfully as far as I understand.”

Asked about the possibility of India facing US sanctions if it were to acquire Russian defence systems such as the Su-57 aircraft or the S-500 air defence platform, Putin said, “India is a sovereign country, and it is free to choose those products that they consider to be most up to date and most applicable for them and obviously offering the best price. No matter what people say, India has always been acting in this manner.”

“India is always guided by its national interests,” he added.

Putin said that Russia’s cooperation with India, just like with all other partners, is not subject to the political environment.

“We can’t be dictated… Nobody can dictate to us, and nobody would even try to do that. We are always going to do what we consider to be right, and we will always stand true to the commitments given to partners, especially partners like India,” he said.

Highlighting Russia’s long-standing relationship with India, especially in the area of defence, Putin said, “Our relations with the Indian friends are specific, thanks to our mutual trust. We concentrate not just on trade. Not just on buying and selling, we’re also concentrating on joint research and development.”

Putin highlighted how experts from both countries are working on the design of the mid-range missile BrahMos.

On the fifth-generation stealth aircraft Sukhoi Su-57, Putin said Russia had earlier proposed a joint development programme with India, but later pursued the project independently after the plan did not materialise.

“Su-57 is a very good aircraft, probably the most modern one, the most up-to-date in the world as of now,” Putin said. “We offered that we should do that together. Well, it didn’t work out, but we did it on our own, and we stand ready to sell Su-57.”

For decades, Russia has served as India’s primary defence supplier. However, persistent supply chain disruptions and delivery delays stemming from the war in Ukraine have forced New Delhi to aggressively diversify its military procurement strategy.

After a years-long search for a fifth-generation fighter jet, India has launched its ambitious Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project, widely regarded as the nation’s largest indigenous aerospace programme.

As the aircraft under the AMCA project is unlikely to join the Indian Air Force (IAF) before 2035, the government is considering the procurement of at least two squadrons (around 36) of Su-57s, provided they fulfil the technical specifications.

CJP founder Dipke at Jantar Mantar

CJP founder Dipke at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, Jun 6: Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the online movement Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), criticised the government for focusing on the organisation’s social media activity rather than addressing their demands, which include Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment tests.

Dipke participated in a planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Saturday, which was held under heavy security and joined by scores of youth.

“My friends, this is a long struggle. It has been a month since we started demanding Pradhan’s resignation on social media, but these individuals are so shameless that instead of taking action, they have been focused on other distractions, like hacking our accounts and getting our posts deleted. You may be able to delete our posts, but you cannot erase us from this space,” Dipke stated during his address to the crowd, which energetically supported his words.

He also mentioned that activist Sonam Wangchuk would be joining the protest shortly and thanked him for his support.

Recalling his arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport that morning, Dipke said that just before his flight was about to land, he felt as though he was living his last moments of freedom. “I was fully prepared to sacrifice my freedom for this cause,” he said.

The CJP founder claimed that many people have compromised themselves and ‘sold out’ due to the fear of imprisonment. “Lekin is desh ka chatra, yuva nahi bika hai (The youth and students of this country have not sold themselves),” he said amid loud cheers from the crowd.

Hundreds of people, mostly young individuals, turned out for the demonstration, many of whom were wearing cockroach masks and holding flowers. School students were also seen attending the protest along with their parents.

The majority of participants were a mix of school and college students, along with young professionals.

Scores of students gathered at the venue, chanting slogans and demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Dipke, who arrived in Delhi early in the day, had urged supporters to maintain discipline and ensure that the protest remains peaceful.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has also expressed support for the protest, stated that he would undertake a six-week fast if Dipke is arrested.

In a post on X, Dipke expressed excitement about meeting supporters at Jantar Mantar and encouraged them to bring a book and the national flag. He also urged participants to offer flowers to police personnel as a “gesture of compassion and gratitude,” emphasising that the movement should be led with “love and peace.”

The protest has been organised by the CJP, a youth-led online movement demanding accountability for alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment tests, including NEET, CBSE, CUET, and SSC examinations.

Security was heightened across the national capital in anticipation of the protest. Police officials stated that additional personnel had been deployed at Indira Gandhi International Airport, border entry points, and other sensitive locations.

More than 1,000 police personnel have been allocated for deployment throughout New Delhi and other strategic locations as a precaution.

In the run-up to the protest, the CJP had circulated guidelines urging participants to maintain non-violent conduct and avoid confrontation. Dipke’s latest appeal reiterated those instructions, emphasising respectful engagement with law enforcement personnel during the demonstration.

Katra-bound coach develops crack, partially separates at Ludhiana; no injuries

Ludhiana, Jun 6: A sleeper coach of the Delhi Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Special train developed a crack and partially separated near the toilet area shortly after the train began moving from the Ludhiana railway station on Saturday, triggering panic among passengers.

The S-2 coach of the train suffered a structural failure causing a portion near the toilets to cave in, officials said. Toilet fittings including seats, fell onto the tracks as the coach body gave way, officials said.

No passenger was hurt in the incident, they said.

Passengers said they felt a sudden and violet jolt as the train started moving, prompting fears of derailment, following which several people rushed out immediately.

Railway officials and emergency teams reached the spot, evacuated passengers from the affected coach and detached it from the train.

Ludhiana Station Director Aditya said a replacement coach was attached to the train, allowing it to resume its journey to Katra without significant delay.

Railways has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to ascertain the cause of the structural failure.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Government Railway Police, Tejpal Singh said preliminary investigation had found no evidence of sabotage.

Officials believe a technical defect caused the coach body to fail at the start of movement.

Officers noted that the consequences could have been far more serious had the coach failure occurred while the train was running at high speed.

Sajad Lone questions Mehbooba role in AIIMS review meeting, calls It ‘constitutional impropriety’

Sajad Lone questions Mehbooba role in AIIMS review meeting, calls It ‘constitutional impropriety’

Srinagar, June 6: Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone on Saturday questioned PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s decision to chair a review meeting at AIIMS Awantipora despite not being an elected legislator, terming the move a “constitutional impropriety” and warning that it could set an undesirable precedent in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a post on X, Lone raised concerns over unelected political leaders chairing official review meetings of government institutions.

“Now I have a question for Mehbooba Ji. If she chairs a review meeting of a central institution today, without being an MLA, what stops an RSS or a BJP non-MLA functionary from chairing similar meetings?” Lone wrote.

He argued that if such a practice were accepted, leaders from various political parties who are not members of the legislature could also claim the authority to preside over official meetings.

“What stops Dr Farooq Abdullah Sahib, Azad Sahib or Nirmal Singh Sahib from chairing similar meetings? The list can go on and on,” he said.

The Peoples Conference chief questioned whether such political entitlement existed elsewhere in the country and expressed concern over what he described as the erosion of established constitutional norms.

“Is the elected political space in J&K destined to be a fish market?” he asked.

Lone said Mehbooba Mufti should acknowledge that chairing the meeting was an error of judgment.

“I will still say it is imperative that she admits that it was an error of judgment. If she doesn’t, it means she has opened the door for all sorts of unelected species and most likely politically undesirable species, especially in Kashmir, to chair similar meetings,” he said.

The Handwara MLA also called upon Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to clarify the constitutional and administrative framework governing such engagements.

“And please, will the Chief Minister once and for all clear these issues,” he said.

Lone further alleged that the authority of opposition legislators had been weakened, contributing to the present situation.

“Had the Chief Minister not set his ministers against the opposition MLAs and eroded their authority, this event of constitutional impropriety may not have taken place,” he wrote.

Referring to Mehbooba Mufti’s recent statement that she had spoken to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda regarding the progress of AIIMS Awantipora, Lone said the issue was not about the project itself but about constitutional propriety.

“Nadda Sahib is the Honourable Health Minister of India. But he does not have the power to redesign constitutional roles. So whether Mehbooba Ji called him or not hardly changes anything,” he said.

“The chairing of the review meeting at AIIMS by a non-MLA was an unconstitutional trespass and will remain an unconstitutional trespass,” Lone added.
