Centre should relook ‘draconian’ provisions of three bills: NC

Srinagar, Aug 20: The National Conference (NC) has voiced strong reservations over certain provisions in the three bills introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling them “draconian” and urging the government to reconsider.

“Some provisions of the bills are draconian. These will be opposed tooth and nail,” NC state spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said, demanding a “relook” at the proposed legislation.

Dar expressed hope that the government would “listen to the genuine concerns of the opposition, address them, and act rationally.”

“We hope the democratic principles will not be allowed to be eroded further,” he added.

The NC leader said since the bills have been referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), the party expects that the opposition’s concerns will be addressed at that stage as well.

18 arrested during anti-Israel protest at Microsoft campus in US' Redmond

Oregon, Aug 21: Eighteen people have been taken into custody in US’ Oregon for vandalising Microsoft’s campus in Redmond during a protest against the company’s business dealings with Israel.

The Redmond Police Department confirmed the arrests in a post on X, stating that the incident occurred on August 20.

“18 arrested for various charges during a protest at Microsoft Campus. Redmond police are at the scene of a demonstration at the Microsoft campus. On Aug 20, around 12:15 p.m., Redmond officers were dispatched to a large gathering of protestors in the Microsoft courtyard,” the department said.

The protest, which entered its second consecutive day, called for Microsoft to sever ties with Israel.

According to police, the situation escalated when officers attempted to remove demonstrators from the property.

“A few protesters had poured paint over the Microsoft sign and on the ground,” the police said, adding that the protesters resisted efforts to clear them and turned aggressive.

Amid the unrest, demonstrators allegedly blocked a pedestrian bridge using tables and chairs stolen from local vendors. The furniture was reportedly used as barricades, obstructing movement in the area.

“Officers took 18 into custody for multiple charges, including trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction. No injuries were reported,” the Redmond Police Department said.

The department also shared photos, including one showing the Microsoft sign defaced with red paint.

Microsoft, in a statement reported by Bloomberg, said: “Today, the group returned and engaged in vandalism and property damage. They also disrupted, harassed, and took tables and tents from local small businesses at a lunchtime farmer’s market for employees.”

The company added, “Microsoft deeply appreciates and supports the actions of local law enforcement officers and the Redmond Police Department.”

Media reports indicated that the demonstrations were led by the group No Azure for Apartheid, which is urging Microsoft to stop selling products to Israel. The group has alleged that Microsoft’s technology is enabling actions in Gaza that have caused civilian deaths.

The protests come after The Guardian reported allegations that the Israeli Defense Forces used Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform to store phone call data obtained through widespread surveillance of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Responding to these claims, Microsoft said it had launched an independent investigation through a law firm. The company stated, “We have found no evidence to date that Microsoft’s Azure and AI technologies have been used to target or harm people in the conflict in Gaza.”

“As we have made clear, Microsoft is committed to its human rights standards and contractual terms of service, including in the Middle East,” it added.

CBI arrests 6 J-K policemen on SC order for cop’s custodial torture

Seven hardcore criminals held with weapons in Samba: Police

Srinagar, Aug 20: The CBI on Wednesday arrested eight police personnel, including at least two officers, in connection with the alleged custodial torture of a cop, following orders from the Supreme Court last month, officials said here on Wednesday.

The arrested cops include a deputy superintendent of police, an inspector, and an assistant sub-inspector, officials said here.

The accused cops were directed to submit their weapons and other government articles to the respective District Police Lines.

One of the accused cops — a special police officer working on an honorarium — has been disengaged and struck off from Special Police Officer (SPO) rolls.

Further details were awaited, the officials said.

On July 21, the Supreme Court directed the CBI to register an FIR over the “brutal and inhuman custodial torture” of a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir and ordered the UT administration to pay him Rs 50 lakh in compensation.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said the injuries caused to the constable during his illegal detention, particularly the “complete mutilation of his genitalia, use of pepper/chilly powder and electric shocks on his genitalia”, were grave reminders of the inhuman torture meted out to him.

“The cumulative effect of all these facts is deeply shocking to the conscience of this court,” the bench said, adding that the violation of Article 21 is “not only evident but egregious.”

The bench observed that the constable suffered life-debilitating injuries in the custody of “fellow state actors” and despite repeated complaints, no effective redressal was provided.

Monsoon session of Parliament to conclude today

New Delhi, Aug 21: The monsoon session of Parliament is set to conclude on Thursday after running for nearly a month since July 21. The proceedings in both Houses — the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha — will reconvene at 11 a.m. for the final sitting of the session.

Throughout the monsoon session, multiple adjournments disrupted proceedings as the Opposition staged continuous protests.

Their primary demand was for a detailed discussion on the voter list revision in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “conspiring” to manipulate the voter list in the state.

On Wednesday, despite loud protests from the Opposition, the Lok Sabha passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025.

The legislation seeks to promote and regulate the online gaming industry, encompassing e-sports, educational games, and social gaming. It introduces stricter regulations for gaming platforms, particularly those involving real-money games such as poker.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also introduced significant bills during the session, including one that mandates the removal of elected representatives who face arrest or detention on serious criminal charges.

The legislation, if enacted, will apply to the Prime Minister, Union ministers, Chief Ministers, and ministers of Union Territories.

Shah tabled three key bills — The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025.

According to the provisions, any Prime Minister, Union minister, Chief Minister, or minister of a state or Union Territory who is arrested and remains in custody for 30 consecutive days in connection with offences carrying a minimum jail term of five years will be required to resign by the 31st day.

In case of non-compliance, they will be automatically removed from office.

The proposed legislation has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which has been directed to submit its report on the opening day of the next parliamentary session.

Shah assured that the Opposition would be given ample opportunity to raise objections and present its views before the panel.

Rotten Meat Controversy: People deserve full transparency, protection: Inam Un Nabi

Srinagar, Aug 20: The Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) has voiced serious concerns over the recent rotten meat scandal, urging immediate action and transparency from authorities.

Echoing these concerns, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi demanded answers from the Food Safety deptt and related agencies “How much rotten meat has already reached the Valley? Why were critical checkpoints such as Lakhanpur and Lower Munda not utilized to prevent contaminated supplies from entering our markets? What about the reports of the samples the department has already taken? Most importantly, why are the names of hotels and restaurants using this meat still being kept under wraps?”

Inam Un Nabi added: “This is more than a public health emergency, it’s a betrayal of consumer trust. The people of J&K deserve full transparency.

The public has a right to know which eateries compromised food safety. Authorities must stop shielding offenders under the guise of business confidentiality.”
