CSIR NET aspirants allege discrimination, demand exam centres within J&K

Srinagar, Dec 12: Resentment is brewing among the aspiring candidates against the National Testing Agency (NTA) for designating their exam centres for upcoming CSIR NET exams outside J&K state.

The move has agitated the candidates who allege that their centres have been designated outside J&K state to create hurdles for them.

The NET exams are set to be conducted on December 18 by National Testing Agency (NTA)-the exam conducting body authorised by the UGC established as a premier, specialist, autonomous and self-sustained testing organization to conduct entrance examinations for admission, fellowship in higher educational institutions from 2018.

“The pathetic thing is that many students have their centres in Delhi, Punjab and other States. It is discrimination with aspirants from J&K,” one of the aspirants told Greater Kashmir.

The candidates said they selected their exam centres in Jammu, Samba, Baramulla and Srinagar districts but none of the choices have been considered by NTA.

“Most of the students have their exam centres outside J&K state,” the aspirants said.

The aggrieved candidates said it was not possible for them to afford air tickets during the prevailing circumstances and travel to other states for appearing in the exams.

The candidates said that despite paying a huge amount of application fee to NTA they have been allotted the exam centres far away from J&K.

“It is not possible for us to travel long distances during these winters. NTA is playing with the career of students,” an aspirant from Rajouri told Greater Kashmir.

The aspirants urged the NTA to allocate their exam centres within J&K before the link to download admit cards is thrown open.

“The J&K government must take up the matter with the NTA to get our genuine grievance addressed,” the aspirants said.

HC issues notice to Saudi Arabian embassy over delay in repatriating youth’s mortal remains

HC issues notice to Saudi Arabian embassy over delay in repatriating youth’s mortal remains

Jaipur, Dec 12: The High Court has issued a notice to the Saudi Arabian embassy in Delhi, seeking an explanation for the prolonged delay in releasing the mortal remains of a Rajasthan youth, who died there on November 13, leaving his family devastated.

Intervening in the matter, the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur issued a notice to the Saudi Arabian government on Thursday, after the body of Ramesh Kumar Meghwal, a resident of Balotra district, remained undispatched even after 28 days of his death.

Justice Nupur Bhati sought a response from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through its Embassy in New Delhi, following a petition filed by the deceased’s mother, Teeju Bai.

Legal experts consider this a significant judicial step, as issuing a notice to a foreign government in a humanitarian matter is rare.

The next hearing is scheduled for December 17, where both the Saudi and Indian governments will present their positions.

Ramesh Kumar Meghwal, a resident of Meghwalon Ki Dhani in Gida tehsil, died under suspicious circumstances in Saudi Arabia on November 13.

When his body was not sent back for several weeks, Charmesh Sharma, former Director of the Rajasthan Seeds Corporation and known for aiding Indians in distress abroad, filed complaints with the President’s Secretariat, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Ministry of External Affairs. The President’s Secretariat directed the Ministry of External Affairs to take necessary action, and the ministry subsequently responded to Sharma.

But even after 27 days, with no progress in the repatriation of the body, the grieving family — assisted legally by Sharma — approached the High Court. On Wednesday, Ramesh’s mother, Teeju Bai, filed a petition through advocates Sushil Vishnoi and Sunil Purohit, pleading for one last glimpse of her son. The High Court, acknowledging the urgency, listed the matter for hearing the next day.

Along with the Saudi Embassy, the High Court also issued notices to the Government of India through Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the Joint Secretary (Gulf Countries), Ministry of External Affairs and the Government of Rajasthan through its Home Secretary.

Advocate Sushil Vishnoi represented the petitioner, while ASG Bharat Vyas appeared for the Indian government.

Following Sharma’s petition at the President’s Secretariat on November 25, the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia responded on November 26, stating that the Saudi Police were still investigating the case.

The Embassy said the body would be handed over only after the forensic medical report was issued. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Embassy could be provided only after receiving the body. On December 3, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh issued Ramesh Kumar’s death certificate, listing the cause of death as suicide. However, the Embassy informed the family that due to the absence of the medical report from the Saudi Police, it was unable to facilitate the return of the body.

Strong 6.7 quake in northern Japan triggers Tsunami advisory

Tokyo, Dec 12: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 has hit Japan’s northeastern region, prompting a tsunami advisory from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), local media reported.

The earthquake struck on Friday off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at 11:44 am local time (02:44 GMT) at a depth of 20km (12.4 miles), according to the JMA.

The Japanese weather agency on Friday issued a tsunami advisory for northern and northeastern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, as well as Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, may see a tsunami of up to 1 metre following the temblor which struck at around 11:44 a.m. off the eastern part of Aomori at a depth of around 20 kilometres, Kyodo reported.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also said that the quake measured 6.7.
Officials are urging people living near the coast and rivers close to the sea in Japan to evacuate to inland areas

The earthquake came four days after Monday’s powerful M7.5 temblor off the eastern coast of Aomori, prompting the agency to warn of the chance of a quake of similar or even larger magnitude hitting the same area within the coming several days.

As per Japanese national broadcaster NHK, the level of shaking from the quake was less than the bigger Monday’s 7.5 earthquake that tore apart roads, smashed windows and triggered tsunami waves of up to 70 centimetres (2.3ft).

The Nuclear Regulation Authority said today there were no immediate signs of abnormalities at the region’s nuclear facilities.

According to the NHK, Tohoku Electric Power Company says no abnormalities have been found at the Higashidori nuclear power plant in Aomori Prefecture, or at the Onagawa plant in Miyagi Prefecture. Tokyo Electric Power Company says no abnormalities have been found at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear plants. Both companies say there are no changes in readings at monitoring posts that measure radiation levels around the plants.

Mumbai, Dec 12: The rupee depreciated 24 paise to a new record low of 90.56 against US dollar in early trade on Friday, as uncertainty over the India-US trade deal and persistent foreign fund outflows dented investors’ sentiments.

Forex traders said rupee is under pressure largely due to aggressive dollar purchases from importers amid surging global prices for precious metals.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 90.43 against the US dollar, then fell further to 90.56 against the greenback, registering a fall of 24 paise from its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee had plunged 38 paise to close at an all-time low of 90.32 against the US dollar.

“For the day the range of 90 to 90.60 should be honored with a close watch on RBI. Today is also the last day of the talks between the Indian and visiting American delegation and we hope a deal is announced after that,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.02 per cent higher at 98.37.

Chargesheet filed against R&B employee for forging DoB to secure illegal regularisation: CBK

Srinagar, Dec 11: In a decisive action against fraud and manipulation of official records, the Special Crime Wing (Crime Branch) Kashmir has filed a chargesheet in FIR No. 07/2022 before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Handwara. The case pertains to an employee of the Public Works Department (R&B) who allegedly forged his date of birth to obtain illegal regularisation, said the Crime Branch Kashmir, in a statement.

According to officials, the chargesheet—filed on December 11, 2025—invokes sections 420, 468, 471, and 201 of the RPC, relating to cheating, forgery, use of forged documents, and destruction of evidence.

The case originated from a communication issued by the Under Secretary to the Government, Public Works Department (R&B), seeking an investigation into the suspected manipulation of the date of birth of Abdul Rashid Lone, son of Mohammad Ahsan Lone, a resident of Chogal, Handwara. Lone was employed as a “Helper” in the R&B Division.

During an initial inquiry, Crime Branch Kashmir found that the accused had allegedly produced a fake medical certificate showing his date of birth as 01-04-1968 in order to secure undue regularisation in the department. However, further verification revealed that his actual date of birth, as per school records, was 04-04-1950—indicating an 18-year discrepancy.

Following these findings, Crime Branch Kashmir registered a formal case and took up a detailed investigation. The probe established that the accused, in criminal conspiracy, had forged and used a fake date of birth certificate to fraudulently prolong his service benefits.

Officials said the investigation brought forth prima facie evidence of cheating, forgery, destruction of evidence and conspiracy, leading to the filing of the chargesheet for judicial determination.

Trump signs AI order to curb state rules, warns China race at stake

Trump signs AI order to curb state rules, warns China race at stake

Washington, Dec 12: US President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at centralising the regulation of artificial intelligence in the United States, arguing that fragmented state-level rules could slow innovation and jeopardise America’s lead over China in a high-stakes global technology race.

“We have a big signing right now, and we have a tremendous industry where we’re leading by a lot. It’s the AI — Artificial intelligence,” Trump said at the signing ceremony on Thursday. “We’re leading China. We’re leading everybody by a tremendous amount.”

Trump framed AI as a decisive strategic contest. “There’s only going to be one winner here. It’s probably going to be the US or China,” he said. “And right now, we’re winning by a lot.”

The executive order seeks to steer AI development under a single national framework, limiting the impact of state-level regulations that the administration says could deter investment in data centres, computing infrastructure, and energy systems.

“If they had to get 50 different approvals from 50 different states, you can forget it,” Trump said. “All you need is one hostile actor.”

A senior administration official said the goal is to ensure AI “can operate within a single national framework in this country as opposed to being subject to state-level regulation that could potentially cripple the industry,” adding that AI leadership is tied to “economic growth, job development, national security and technological edge.”

David Sacks, introduced as the administration’s “AI and crypto czar,” warned that states are moving rapidly to legislate on AI. “We have over a thousand bills going through state legislatures right now to regulate AI. Over 100 of them have already passed,” he said, noting that “25 per cent of them are in California, New York, and Illinois.”

Sacks said the administration will work with Congress to “create that federal framework” and push back against “the most onerous and excessive state regulations,” while maintaining safeguards in areas such as child protection.

Speakers at the ceremony also cast AI as a contest of political values. Trump said slowing US AI development would give Beijing a strategic advantage. “Not doing this would be the greatest gift to China… that China has ever received,” he said.

Asked whether he was more concerned about China or the risks posed by artificial intelligence itself, Trump replied, “Both,” pointing to rapid breakthroughs already emerging from the technology.

“You look at the medical and medical research already… We’re way ahead of what we ever thought we’d be just from the infancy of AI.”

The executive orderseeks the administration to take decisive action to ensure that AI can operate within a single national framework in this country as opposed to being subject to state-level regulation that could potentially cripple the industry, he said.
