FIFA awards first-ever peace prize to US President Donald Trump ahead of World Cup draw

Washington, Dec 06: FIFA, the global governing body for international football, on Friday named American President Donald Trump as the first winner of the newly-created FIFA Peace Prize, during the draw ceremony for next year’s FIFA Men’s World Cup to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Trump proclaimed that “the world is a safer place now” as he received the award at the draw for the 2026 World Cup in Washington, DC. FIFA will be distributing the teams.

Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president and one of Trump’s closest sporting allies, presented the honour onstage at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts on Friday, saying Trump had been selected “in recognition of his exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world”.

Trump, who has been openly campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize but has not been nominated this year, was heavily favoured to receive the newly created award because of Infantino’s support.

The certificate that Infantino handed Trump recognises the U.S. president for his actions to “promote peace and unity around the world.” FIFA says the prize is for “individuals who help unite people in peace through unwavering commitment and special actions”.

“This is what we want from a leader — a leader that cares about the people,” Infantino said about Trump, who wore a gold medal around his neck and was presented with a gold trophy with his name on it that depicts hands holding up the world, as it does in the FIFA World Cup.

In his bid to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump has laid claim to various peace initiatives, including brokering peace between Israel and Palestine and India and Pakistan when they engaged in an arms exchange after India launched Operation Sindoor to destroy terror infrastructure across the border in Pakistan following a terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir.

India has repeatedly denied that a ceasefire during Operation Sindoor was agreed because of American intervention.

Admission on basis of religion to vitiate atmosphere: Mehbooba

Jammu, Dec 5: People Democratic Party (PDP) president and the former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Friday stated that the admission row in SMVDIME was unfortunate and if the religion was made admission criterion instead of merit, it would vitiate atmosphere across the country.

“Mufti Sahib, as the Chief Minister, had donated land for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU). Merit was the criterion for admission,” she said.

PDP president, who travelled in Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat Express for the first time, was responding to media queries in Katra. She described her travel experience as “very heart-warming.”

“It was very beautiful. Felt good as the distance was covered in three hours. This (Katra) is the abode of Mata Vaishno Devi. Earlier during my college days, I used to frequently visit this place. I used to visit the shrine also. All those cherished memories were refreshed,” she said.

NC uses Sheikh Abdullah’s 120th birth anniversary to showcase governance gains

NC uses Sheikh Abdullah’s 120th birth anniversary to showcase governance gains

Srinagar, Dec 5: A winter morning at Hazratbal carried more than the chill in the air.

It carried remembrance.

As soft sunlight touched the Dal Lake, the National Conference gathered to mark the 120th birth anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, National Conference founder and a statesman whose legacy remains deeply embedded in Kashmir’s political consciousness.

At the Mazar-e-Anwar, NC President Farooq Abdullah and Vice President, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, led party leaders in offering floral tributes and Fatiha.

The crowd stood in quiet reflection, and with each prayer, memories of Sheikh Abdullah’s life, his mass appeal, leadership, and long political journey seemed to resonate within the moment.

Senior leaders, Members of Parliament (MPs), legislators, and representatives across the provincial, zonal, women’s wing, Youth National Conference (YNC), minority, media, and social media units attended the gathering.

Many sat longer after the prayers, listening to verses of the Holy Quran as they drifted through the mausoleum, turning the commemoration into a space of both emotion and reflection.

For many long-time members, this day is more than a ritual.

It is a reminder of roots, sacrifice, and the beginning of a political movement that shaped modern Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing party workers on the occasion, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah defended the performance of the Jammu and Kashmir government, asserting that much had been achieved in its first year despite limited administrative powers under the Union Territory framework.

However, he acknowledged that more needed to be done to alleviate public hardships.

“We still have a lot to cover. Whatever we could do this year, it is before you. Our opponents will always tell you what has not been done, but not what has been achieved,” Abdullah said.

He said that one of the biggest accomplishments was the restoration of free movement and expression.

“Today, our opponents take out rallies and protest marches,” he said, calling it a sign of democratic space returning.

Yet, Abdullah expressed concern over internal disunity and statements made publicly by some party leaders.

“For God’s sake, tell me what more could have been done in a year, even as everything is up to the Lieutenant Governor? Despite that, our endeavour has been to ease the sufferings of the people. Our MLAs go to every corner and address public issues,” he said.

Calling the party’s journey “like walking on a razor’s edge,” Abdullah pointed to the challenges faced in governance and public expectation.

He reminded workers that transformation takes time.

“We still have four more years. God willing, you will see the change in your areas,” Abdullah said.

He urged the party to open doors for young and educated leadership, especially women, stating that the forthcoming municipal and panchayat elections demand new energy and participation.

“Our educated boys and girls must come forward. Strengthen the party instead of issuing statements. Everyone is doing that,” Abdullah said, pressing for discipline and unity within ranks.

He reminded that unity remains the organisation’s biggest strength.

“Opponents will create hurdles, but do not be afraid. God, who gave you success, will continue to bless you,” Abdullah told workers.

In a reflective closing note, he said he himself could have gone to Parliament or the Rajya Sabha, but chose instead to allow others who could represent the people more effectively.

As the gathering dispersed, the breeze carried away voices and verses, leaving behind petals on marble and a moment of continuity between past and present.

For many in Hazratbal, the day was less about nostalgia and more about recommitment to legacy, to leadership, and to the long political road ahead.

Why are IndiGo flights grounded?

0
Why are IndiGo flights grounded?

For the past week, IndiGo has seen mass cancellations, dropping over 1000 flights in just four days from December 3 to 6. This has left thousands of passengers stranded at airports including Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, sending ticket prices on other airlines skyrocketing.

What is the reason?

Aviation experts are calling this a “perfect storm” because three separate issues collided at the same time.

  1. The New Pilot Rest Rules (FDTL)

It is the primary trigger. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) implemented new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL). Simply put, to prevent pilot fatigue and ensure safety, pilots must now rest more (48 hours of weekly rest instead of 36) and fly fewer night shifts.

The Problem is that this means IndiGo suddenly needed more pilots to fly the same number of planes. The airline did not have enough backup crew ready when these rules kicked in fully.

  1. The Winter Fog

December brings dense fog to North India. Usually, if a flight is delayed by fog, the same pilot flies it a few hours later. But under the strict new rules, a 3-hour fog delay often means the pilot’s “duty time” expires while they are waiting. They have to go home to rest, leaving the plane without a pilot.

  1. The Engine Crisis

IndiGo was already flying with one hand tied behind its back. Approximately 75 of its aircraft are currently grounded long-term due to global technical faults in their Pratt & Whitney engines. This meant when active planes got stuck due to pilot shortages, there were no spare planes to swap in.

What is the scale of the crisis?

1000: The number of flights cancelled between December 3 and December 6

500: The number of flights grounded on a single day (Friday, Dec 5ember), which is nearly 25 percent of their daily schedule

1.5 lakh: The estimated number of passengers affected by these cancellations

8.5%: IndiGo’s “On-Time Performance” on Thursday, a historic low for the airline known for punctuality

75: The approximate number of aircraft sitting idle due to engine issues

What is the government doing?

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has stepped in. Recognising that the sudden shift in rules caused the collapse, the DGCA has granted IndiGo a temporary exemption. They are allowed to revert to some older night-duty norms until February 2026. This “breathing room” is expected to help them stabilise rosters.

What does this mean for passengers?

Timeline for Fix: IndiGo’s CEO has said they are “rebooting” their network. While the worst may be over, operations are only expected to stabilise between December 10 and 15.

Ticket Prices

With IndiGo cancelling flights, demand has shifted to other airlines like Air India and Akasa, causing last-minute fares to jump by 300 percent to 400 percent on busy routes.

Advisory

If you are travelling in the next week, check your flight status before leaving for the airport. Do not rely on SMS notifications.

Full Refund

As per DGCA norms, if your flight was cancelled, you are entitled to a full refund or an alternate flight at no extra cost.

IndiGo cancels over 1000 flights

0
Why are IndiGo flights grounded?

New Delhi/Mumbai, Dec 5: IndiGo cancelled over 1000 flights on Friday and said operations are expected to normalise in the next 10 days, as the country’s largest airline received flight duty norms relaxation from watchdog DGCA, which will probe the disruptions that have impacted thousands of passengers for four straight days.

As a large number of flights got cancelled and delayed, chaos continued at major airports across the country, with frustrated passengers scrambling for updates and searching for their baggage.

Many passengers vented out their anger on social media, and airfares also sailed northwards for many routes.

The operations of IndiGo, which controls about two-thirds of the country’s domestic traffic and generally operates around 2300 flights daily, failed to plan properly for the new flight duty norms that provide for increased rest periods and lesser night landings.

With air travel chaos continuing for the fourth consecutive day, DGCA on Friday provided temporary exemption from the Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms, including on night landings and definition of night time, to the airline, which had sought the relaxations to normalise its operations.

The airline was required to implement the FDTL norms from November 1.

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Friday said various operational measures, including keeping new flight duty norms in abeyance, will help address the IndiGo flight disruptions, and complete restoration of services is expected in next three days.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has constituted a four-member panel to ascertain the reasons that have led to the disruptions and also said that prima facie, the situation indicates deficiencies in internal oversight, operational preparedness, and compliance planning, “warranting an independent examination”.

The FDTL relaxations have been provided for only IndiGo’s A320 family planes, which account for the majority of its fleet, till February 10, 2026, officials said.

“This exemption has been granted solely to facilitate operational stabilisation and in no way amounts to dilution of safety requirements. During this period, DGCA would review after every fifteen days, the action taken by IndiGo to address the situation including hiring of adequate crew to ensure FDTL compliance,” the civil aviation ministry said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the regulator eased the FDTL norm, saying leaves can substitute weekly rest periods for pilots. These moves mean that more pilots will be available for operations and that will help in stabilising the situation.

On a day when IndiGo cancelled more than 1,000 flights, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on Friday said the situation is anticipated to normalise between December 10-15.

In his first video message since the disruptions began, Elbers apologised for the major inconvenience caused to the passengers due to the disruptions.

“Regrettably, earlier measures of the last few days have proven not to be enough. So we decided today for a reboot of all our systems and schedules, resulting in the highest number of cancellations so far, but imperative for progressive improvements starting tomorrow onwards.

“With these actions, we expect tomorrow to have cancellations below 1,000. The support of DGCA, in providing specific FDTL implementation relief, is of great help,” Elbers said.

The issue of IndiGo flight disruptions was also raised in the Parliament.

Pilots’ body Airlines’ Pilots Association (ALPA) India on Friday took “strong” objection to safety regulator DGCA’s “selective and unsafe” relief to domestic carrier IndiGo, saying the decision sets a dangerous precedent.

The civil aviation ministry has taken urgent and proactive measures to address the ongoing disruption in flight schedules, particularly those of Indigo airlines, Naidu said in a statement.

“The Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) orders of the DGCA have been placed in abeyance with immediate effect. Without compromising on air safety, this decision has been taken solely in the interest of passengers, especially senior citizens, students, patients, and others who rely on timely air travel for essential needs,” he said.

According to him, the operational measures have been initiated to ensure that normal airline services are restored at the earliest.

“Based on the immediate implementation of these directives, we expect that flight schedules will begin to stabilise and return to normal by tomorrow. We anticipate that complete restoration of services will be achieved within the next three days,” the minister said.

The DGCA also issued an appeal to all the pilots and pilots’ associations to extend full cooperation amid the flight disruptions, and in view of the large-scale traffic demand due to winter holidays and marriage season.

In a rare move, IndiGo, which said it is rebooting the systems and schedules, on Friday suspended operations of all departing domestic flights from the Delhi airport, which is also its key hub, till Friday midnight.
