Five residential houses damaged in Srinagar blaze

Srinagar, Dec 03: A fire broke out in the Nowpora area of Khanyar in Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon, damaging at least five residential houses and triggering panic in the densely populated locality.

Officials from the Fire and Emergency Services department said teams were rushed to the spot soon after the incident was reported. Assistant Director Fire and Emergency Services Srinagar, Dr Aqib Hussain Mir, said the blaze was massive but was brought under control in time, preventing it from spreading to adjoining structures.

He praised the role of locals who initially responded by attempting to contain the flames using available resources until fire tenders reached the spot. According to him, the combined effort of firefighters and locals helped avert what could have been a far more devastating incident in the congested neighbourhood.

Although no immediate reports of casualties were received, he said the fire caused extensive damage to household belongings and structures. The exact cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed yet.

Authorities have started an assessment to ascertain the extent of losses suffered by the affected families. A detailed report is expected after a complete evaluation of the damage.

Dr Mir appealed to the public to exercise extra caution while using electrical appliances during the ongoing winter season, noting that increased load on wiring and heating devices significantly raises the risk of fires. He urged people to ensure proper maintenance of electrical fittings and avoid overloading circuits to prevent similar incidents.

Dr Mir also advised people living in congested areas to keep basic fire safety measures in mind and report any fire outbreak without delay to ensure a quick response. [KNT]

J&K Students Association hails MP Vivek Tankha for introducing historic private member’s bill on rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in Rajya Sabha

Srinagar, Dec 03: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, on Tuesday hailed Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Vivek Tankha for his historic initiative in championing the Kashmiri Pandits (Recourse, Restitution, Rehabilitation and Resettlement) Bill, 2022 in the Rajya Sabha. The Association said that this moment is not merely a parliamentary procedure but a moral and constitutional milestone for a community that has endured 35 years of displacement, erasure, and unaddressed suffering.

The Bill that seeks to provide comprehensive social, political, and economic rehabilitation for Kashmiri Pandits, ensure protection of their property, facilitate the restoration of their cultural heritage, guarantee their safety and security, and deliver a structured rehabilitation and resettlement package for the community.

In a statement, Kashmiri Pandit Wing President Krishna Saproo said that this pioneering effort marks a significant moment in India’s legislative history, as it becomes the first private member’s Bill with financial implications to receive the President’s recommendation. Such recognition affirms that the plight of Kashmiri Pandits is not a marginal concern but a central constitutional responsibility of the Republic.

The Bill’s explicit acknowledgment of Kashmiri Pandits as victims is a watershed moment in their decades-long struggle for truth and justice. The tragic events of January 1990 uprooted over 450,000 indigenous inhabitants from their ancestral homeland. By naming this reality with moral clarity, MP Vivek Tankha has restored dignity to a truth long suppressed in national discourse.

He emphasized that this legislation represents not charity, but a comprehensive framework for justice; one that addresses the material, political, cultural, and existential dimensions of displacement. It envisions consolidated resettlement in Kashmir with security guarantees, reflecting the core principle of return with dignity, autonomy, and constitutional protection.

He asserted that the tabling of this Bill on 5th December for discussion in the Rajya Sabha marks a historic day for the Kashmiri Pandit community. It has transformed a decades-long humanitarian crisis from a neglected footnote in Kashmir’s conflict narrative into a central test of India’s constitutional integrity. Vivek Tankha’s leadership has demonstrated empathy, courage, and statesmanship, reaffirming that the Republic cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of its indigenous communities.

The Association remains hopeful that all political parties, including the treasury benches, will rise above partisanship to support this Bill. This is not a political favor but a constitutional obligation, and its passage would ease the long-standing suffering of thousands of displaced families. We firmly believe that parliamentary consensus will prevail and that the concerned branches of government will ensure the Bill reaches its logical conclusion, it added.

This is indeed a moment of historical vindication for the Kashmiri Pandit community. We express our deep gratitude to Rajya Sabha MP Shri Vivek Tankha for his commitment to justice and his bold effort to restore dignity, security, and constitutional rights to a community that has waited far too long for acknowledgment and restitution.

The Association further urged all political parties to come forward, support, vote for, and pass the Bill tabled in the Rajya Sabha by MP Vivek Tankha. We appeal to all political parties, including the Congress and the BJP, to extend their support. Such collective backing would reflect the full weight and urgency of national legislative intent, enabling structured and enforceable mechanisms for justice, restitution, and dignified return, it added.

Sub-committee report sent upward after Cabinet review; Omar withholds comment

Srinagar, Dec 03: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday declined to comment on the cabinet’s discussion on the Sub-Committee report on reservation, saying it would not be appropriate to speak until official formalities were completed and the file was forwarded to the Lieutenant Governor.

The Chief Minister was speaking to reporters after the culmination of the cabinet meeting held earlier in Jammu.

He said the cabinet meeting minutes were yet to be finalised and forwarded, and any public statement before that would be premature.

“Cabinet meeting minutes have to be written, signed and forwarded to the LG. Until that is done, it will not be right to comment on what has been decided,” Abdullah said.

He said the cabinet had made serious efforts to live up to the expectations of the people while attempting to rationalise the reservation framework in a fair manner.

“We tried to live up to people’s expectations. We tried to rationalise the reservation system as promised and tried to ensure that no injustice is done to anyone,” he said.

Omar Abdullah said the issue of reservation was treated as a serious matter and required time to address due to its sensitivity.

“This is a serious issue and can easily be politicised. That is why time was taken,” he said, adding that the cabinet worked in a transparent manner.

Omar Abdullah as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said the ball was now in the court of the Lieutenant Governor and reiterated that no comment would be made until the file reached the LG office.

“The cabinet has done its work. Now the matter is with the LG. Till the file reaches his office, I will not say anything further,” he said.

The Chief Minister revealed that the issue had been discussed multiple times within the Sub-Committee before being placed before the cabinet.

“The reservation issue was discussed in multiple Sub-Committee meetings. For nearly six months, under Sakina Itoo, efforts were made to resolve the matter,” he said.

Without naming National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah, Abdullah said that some people may not be satisfied with the outcome.

“My friends will not be satisfied. But this was not done for the satisfaction of one person. It was done for the larger good,” he said with a smile. [KNT]

Congress MP flags concerns over Sanchar Saathi app

New Delhi, Dec 03: Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala on Wednesday flagged concerns related to Sanchar Saathi mobile application in the Rajya Sabha, saying it completely negates the right of privacy of every individual.

Raising the issue, he said a clear apprehension is that features of the application would point out real-time geo-location of every user, monitoring of the search history, financial transaction and a possible monitoring of conversations through SMS and WhatsApp.

“Government of India, Ministry of Communication has purportedly issued an order whereby all cellphone manufacturers and importers of cellphones are compulsorily obliged to upload Sanchar Saathi app. It is also directed that this app has to be pushed into every cell phone and smartphone,” Surjewala said.

The ministry’s order dated November 28, mandates all mobile phone manufacturers to pre-install Sanchar Saathi app in all handsets to be sold in India as well as in existing devices through a software update.

It also mandates mobile phone companies to ensure that the pre-installed Sanchar Saathi application is readily visible and accessible to the end users at the time of first use or device setup.

Surjewala said pre-installation of Sanchar Saathi app is a clear breach of privacy of every smartphone and cell phone users of India.

“Would this not completely negate the right of privacy of every individual? And a possible kill switch, sir, will turn every cellphone into a brick. If the government then wants, then every cellphone of every journalist, every opposition leader, every dissident, it will become a pure simple brick by use of a kill switch,” said the Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan.

Surjewala said all passwords, information, bank account numbers, personal information of every user stored on the cell phone becomes susceptible, either with a government agency or a hacker, or both in this case.

“It also can possibly give a hacker full device control. Look at the implications it is fraught with. Also, sir, it leaves millions of devices exposed for months, for it depends on an upgrade that would be pushed by the government.

“To give you an example, the government pushes an upgrade, Samsung doesn’t do it for three months. For three months, all cellphones of that make will be susceptible to be hacked by any hacker in any manner whatsoever, completely compromising the data of every single person,” he said.

Surjewala demanded that the government clarify the legal authority for mandating a non-renewable application and push a compulsory software update and disclose “what independent security audit and safeguards and misuse prevention mechanisms are in place” for it.

Handicapped Association stages protest, seeks implementation of Disability Act 2016 in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 03: On World Disability Day, members of the Jammu Kashmir Handicapped Association staged a protest in Srinagar on Wednesday, pressing the government to fulfil long-pending demands related to social security, financial relief and legal safeguards.

The protestors assembled at Press Enclave Srinagar, carrying placards and banners seeking justice and highlighting issues faced by people with disabilities. They raised slogans demanding immediate attention to what they described as neglect and discrimination.

Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, association president Abdul Rashid Bhat alleged that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, though implemented across the country, had not been enforced in Jammu and Kashmir in its true spirit.

“The Disability Act was implemented in other states years ago but not here. We are still waiting for our legal rights to be recognised on the ground,” Bhat said.

He also criticised the existing pension amount for disabled persons, terming it inadequate in the present economic conditions. “Our monthly pension is only Rs 1250, which is nothing in this era of inflation. We demand that it should be enhanced to at least Rs 3000,” he added.

Highlighting economic hardships, Bhat demanded interest-free loans for those with disabilities to enable them to earn a living with dignity. “We should be provided with interest-free loans so that we can start small businesses and stand on our own feet,” he said.

The association also sought special concessions on essential commodities, including a reduction in LPG prices for disabled individuals.

“We are only given assurances. Nothing changes on the ground,” Bhat alleged, warning that if their demands were not met, the association would launch an indefinite agitation outside the Jammu Assembly secretariat.

The protest concluded peacefully, with demonstrators reiterating their resolve to intensify the movement until concrete measures are announced by the administration. [KNT]

Deep-sea search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 to resume Dec 30

Deep-sea search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 to resume Dec 30

Kuala Lumpur, Dec 03: Malaysia’s transport ministry said Wednesday that the deep-sea hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 will resume Dec 30, renewing hopes of finally locating the jet that vanished without a trace more than a decade ago.

The Boeing 777 plane disappeared from radar shortly after taking off on March 8, 2014, carrying 239 people, mostly Chinese nationals, on a flight from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing.

Satellite data showed the plane turned from its flight path and headed south to the far-southern Indian Ocean, where it is believed to have crashed.

The transport ministry said in a statement that US-based marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity will search intermittently from Dec 30 for a total of 55 days, in targeted areas believed to have the highest likelihood of finding the missing aircraft.

“The latest development underscores the government of Malaysia’s commitment in providing closure to the families affected by this tragedy,” it said.

Malaysia’s government gave the green light in March for a “no-find, no-fee” contract with Ocean Infinity to resume the seabed search operation at a new 15,000-square-kilometre site in the ocean. Ocean Infinity will be paid $70 million only if wreckage is discovered. The search was halted in April due to bad weather.

An expensive multinational search failed to turn up any clues to its location, although debris washed ashore on the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands. A private search in 2018 by Ocean Infinity also found nothing.
