Russia downs over 120 Ukrainian drones overnight: Defence ministry

Moscow, Aug 11: Russian air defence forces shot down roughly 120 Ukrainian drones overnight, Russia’s Defence Ministry said.

“During the past night from 20:00 (1700 GMT) on August 9 to 06:10 Moscow time (0310 GMT) on August 10, air defence duty forces destroyed and intercepted 121 fixed-wing Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry added that over 34 drones were downed on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. (0530 GMT) to 3 p.m. (1200 GMT), including one over the territory of the Moscow Region, Xinhua news agency reported.

One person was killed due to falling drone debris in the Saratov Region, the region’s governor said on Telegram.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Air Force reported on Sunday that Russia launched an attack overnight using 100 combat and decoy drones, with air defence systems shooting down 70 of them.

Earlier on August 4, 2025, Russian air defence forces repelled a large-scale drone attack targeting Volgograd region’s transport and energy infrastructure overnight, regional authorities said.

“There were no casualties,” Volgograd Governor Andrey Bocharov said in a post on social media.

Bocharov said that debris from intercepted drones damaged a high-voltage power line, disrupting electricity supply to the town of Ilovlya and nearby settlements. Emergency repair crews were dispatched to restore power.

In the town of Frolovo, a fire was erupted at a technical building in the Archeda railway station, prompting temporary train suspensions as explosive ordnance disposal teams neutralised an unexploded drone that had landed on the tracks.

‘India has emerged as a preferred security partner in Indo-Pacific’

'India has emerged as a preferred security partner in Indo-Pacific'

New Delhi, Aug 10: India has now graduated to becoming a “preferred security partner” in the Indo-Pacific region, forming defence partnerships that not only include joint exercises and capacity building but also exports of defence equipment either as a grant or under a defence Line of Credit at the request of the partner state, according to former Indian diplomat Suchitra Durai.

Trilateral maritime security cooperation with Sri Lanka and the Maldives, which began in 2011, has extended to other Indian Ocean states, including Mauritius and Bangladesh, with Seychelles as observer under the Colombo Security Conclave that now has a charter and a secretariat in Colombo.

The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) has 25 participating countries from South Asia, West Asia, Africa, Southeast Asia and European countries with Indian Ocean territories as well as nine observers and a rotating chair (India will take over as chair at the end of 2025). MILAN is a biennial multinational exercise hosted by the Indian Navy in harmony with India’s vision of SAGAR and the Act East policy, Durai, a former envoy to Thailand, highlighted in an article in Mizzima News, a leading media outlet in Myanmar.

A crucial facet of maritime security is enhanced maritime domain awareness. Towards this, India has also been pursuing white shipping agreements with several countries (22 have been concluded till now) and established a state-of-the-art Information Fusion Centre (IFC – IOR) in Gurugram that facilitates the sharing of maritime information among member states.

Ten years after SAGAR, during an official visit to Mauritius in 2025, PM Narendra Modi announced MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), an updated doctrine. If SAGAR is the sea, then MAHASAGAR denotes “ocean” in Hindi and several other Indian languages. MAHASAGAR marks a strategic evolution from a regional focus on the Indian Ocean to a global maritime vision, with particular emphasis on the Global South. PM Modi’s recent engagements with Mauritius, Maldives, Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana, and now the Philippines are aligned with the MAHASAGAR vision.

India has been sharing its developmental experiences and technical expertise in a spirit of “Vasudhaivakutumbakam” (the ancient belief that the World is One Family). As PM Modi stated in his address to the Ugandan Parliament in 2018: “Our developmental partnership will be guided by your priorities, it will be on terms that will be comfortable for you, that will liberate your potential and not constrain your future.”

The Indian model of developmental cooperation is comprehensive and involves multiple instruments, including grant-in-aid, concessional lines of credit, capacity building and technical assistance.

Pakistan attacked 'insaniyat', Kashimiriyat in Pahalgam: PM Modi

Bengaluru, Aug 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India was moving fast towards becoming the third major economy in the world, and this momentum was achieved through the spirit of “reform, perform and transform”.

The Prime Minister’s comments come days after US President Donald Trump’s “India a dead economy” jibe.

PM Modi said that during the past 11 years, India’s economy has grown from the 10th position to the top five globally, and is rapidly progressing towards becoming one of the top three economies.

Flagging off three Vande Bharat Express trains, laying the foundation stone for the Bangalore Metro Phase-3 project and inaugurating the Metro Rail Yellow line, the PM in his address outlined growth across sectors and said such achievements strengthened the resolve of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

“We are moving fast to become one of the top three economies of the world. How did we get this speed? We got it through the spirit of reform, perform and transform,” he said, adding that the speed was achieved through clear intention and honest efforts.

On infrastructure growth, he said in 2014, metro rail services were confined to just five cities.

“Today, metro rail networks span over 1000 km across 24 cities, making India the third-largest metro network globally,” PM Modi said. “Since independence, till 2014, only 20,000 km of the rail network had been electrified.  During 11 years alone, from 2014 to 2025, it has increased to 40,000 km. Similarly, from 74 airports in 2014, the nation today has more than 160 and likewise, the national waterways have gone up to 30 from only 3. India has also taken a big leap in the education and health sectors.”

He said that till 2014, there were seven All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and 387 medical colleges.

“It has now gone up to 22 AIIMS and 704 medical colleges, which are serving the people. In the past 11 years, more than a lakh new seats have been added to the medical colleges across the country. The IITs increased from 16 to 23, IIITs from 9 to 25 and IIMs from 13 to 21. Today, there are more opportunities available for students in the higher education sector,” the PM said.

He said that as the nation progresses rapidly, the lives of the poor and marginalised are transforming at the same pace.

“Before 2014, the total export was USD 468 billion, but today it is USD 824 billion. We used to import mobile phones, but now we are the top five exporters of mobile handsets. Our electronic export before 2014 was USD 6 billion, which has gone up to USD 38 billion,” PM Modi said.

He said India’s automobile export before 2014 was USD 16 billion and now it is more than double, making India the fourth major automobile exporter globally.

“These achievements give strength to our concept of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). We will march together and build a developed India,” the PM said.

He said the next big priority should be becoming self-reliant in technology.

“Indian tech companies have made a mark globally, developing software and products for the entire world,” PM Modi said.

Batting for focused efforts to lead in emerging fields, he stressed the need to strengthen Bengaluru and Karnataka’s presence in ‘Make in India’ and the manufacturing sector.

The PM urged that India’s products must adhere to the ‘Zero Defect, Zero Effect’ standard, meaning they should be flawless in quality and have no negative impact on the environment.

He expressed confidence that Karnataka’s talent will lead the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

“The journey towards ‘Vikasit Bharat’ would move ahead alongside Digital India. By way of initiatives like the India AI Mission, India is advancing towards global AI leadership,” PM Modi said.

“India is moving to assume the role of global leadership in the domain of Artificial Intelligence. The semiconductor mission is also gaining pace. India will soon get a ‘Made in India’ chip,” he said.

Regarding the space missions, the PM said India has become an example of “low-cost hi-tech space missions”, which means that India is moving ahead in areas of futuristic technologies.

He said that the speciality of such advancement is the empowerment of the poor, and digitisation has reached every village.

“Through UPI, India accounts for over 50 per cent of the world’s real-time transactions, he underlined,” PM Modi said.

Encounter underway in Kishtwar

Encounter breaks out in south Kashmir's Kulgam

Jammu, Aug 10: Security forces and terrorists Sunday exchanged fire as a fierce encounter broke out in the forested stretch of Dul area in Kishtwar district.

The encounter began as the security forces established contact with the terrorists during a search operation launched early Sunday morning following intelligence input about the presence of terrorists in the dense forests of Dul area.

The hiding terrorists opened fire on security forces who retaliated in equal measure, thus ensuing exchange of gunfire.

Reports suggested that there were two Pakistani terrorists caught in the cordon, however, there was no official confirmation to it (number of terrorists and identity).

Army’s White Knight Corps confirmed only upto the extent of contact with the terrorists and ongoing encounter.

“Alert Indian Army troops while carrying out an intelligence based operation have established contact with terrorists in the general area of Dul in Kishtwar in the early hours of 10 Aug 2025. Gunfire exchanged. Operation under progress,”

White Knight Corps posted on its ‘X’ handle with a tagline “Contact with terrorists” and a picture, purportedly, of the area, where the encounter is underway.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Police, in a massive crackdown on the terror ecosystem in Kishtwar district, conducted coordinated surprise raids on multiple locations linked to active terrorists currently operating from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on August 9.

Police said that the raids were part of its relentless drive against terrorism and a sustained counter-terror strategy across Jammu and Kashmir aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure, Over Ground Workers (OGWs) network and severing logistical support channels to anti-national elements.

As per officials, searches were conducted at around 26 locations, including the house of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Jehangir Saroori.

“The raids were carried out on the directions of SSP Kishtwar, Naresh Singh and executed under the close supervision of Additional SP Kishtwar, Pardeep Singh Goria. Multiple police teams were deployed simultaneously across Kishtwar, Chatroo, Dachhan, and Atholi, targeting hideouts and residential premises of terrorists and their associates,” Police said.

The raids, Police said, were aimed at disrupting the local support network for cross-border terrorists, gathering actionable intelligence related to anti-national activities and sending a strong deterrent message to individuals or groups engaged in supporting or sheltering such elements.

“During the searches, police teams examined targetted premises for electronic devices, documents, and other material evidence linked to terror financing, radicalization and cross-border communication. We remain firmly committed to ensuring the peace, stability, and security of the district. Any person found involved in aiding or harbouring terrorists will face strict legal action,” SSP Kishtwar stated, reiterating the force’s zero-tolerance stance against terrorism.

On Friday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had carried out searches in the houses of Pakistan-based terrorists in Doda. Police said that the searches were carried out at the houses of Pakistan-based terrorists, across fifteen locations in Doda district as part of a massive clampdown on the terror ecosystem in the sub-region. These 15 locations, according to Police, were spread in the Bhaderwah, Gandoh, Thathri and Kastigarh areas of District Doda.

“All these J&K citizens from the district are operating from Pakistan and are helping the existing foreign terrorists active here in providing them logistics and other support through their contacts here,” Police said.

Army rewards former Uri porter after 6 decades of his service

Baramulla, Aug 10: After serving as a porter for the Indian Army for years since 1965, Noor Muhammad Thaker was rewarded for his services and dedication during a symposium on “Hajipir – Valour Beyond the Pass” organised at Thimayya Hall, Baramulla.

Noor Muhammad, a former porter, was felicitated by General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava, at the occasion.

An official said Noor Muhammad who served as porter several decades ago bore the Indian Army’s burdens “with a soldier’s heart.”

He said that in August 1965, Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar unleashed 18 Punjab, Azad Kashmir Regiment, and Razakar infiltrators to seize Haji Pir Pass (2,637m).

“It was a vital artery fortified with machine guns, mines, and barbed wire at Sank (2,895m) and Bedori (3,760m),” the army official said.

He said that 1 Para of Indian Army, led by Major Ranjit Singh Dyal, launched Operation Bakshi and captured the pass in a daring night assault which, he said, shattered Pakistani defenses.

Following this, Noor Muhammad was summoned from Mohura along with other 24 porters who joined 7 Maratha Light Infantry at Uri to build Tilpatra Post near Kaman Post.

“Under relentless rain and Pakistani shelling, they hauled supplies, their hands were blistered and their backs were bent,” the official said.

He said that amid shelling, Noor Muhammad along with his friend Lateef and two others ventured to a jungle spring with heavy hearts amid the unease.

“Five Pakistani infiltrators ambushed them. Noor was blindfolded and marched across the ceasefire line to Muzaffarabad’s dank cells,” the officer said.

“During my questioning, I was labeled as a spy. I was frightened and was uncertain about my fate. I told them I am a porter,” Noor, now fragile and weak, recalls the incident. The Army officer meanwhile added that Noor was beaten with cables, starved, and left shivering in wet clothes.

“During his interrogation, the Pakistani Army was desperate to know secrets of the Indian Army,” the officer said. The Army Officer recalled that during a prisoner exchange in 1966 In October 1966, Noor was brought home.

“He was scared and weak. He joined his family without celebrating his return,” the Army officer said.

Soon after joining his family, Noor, according to the Army officer, again served the Army as a porter for several years. “He served Army as a porter to raise his four sons and pets at home,”

During the symposium on “Hajipir – Valour Beyond the Pass” organised at Thimayya Hall, Noor Muhammad was silently watched the proceedings, as his services were recalled by the Army officers and showered praises on him.

India’s Asiatic lion population soars to record 891

India’s Asiatic lion population soars to record 891

New Delhi, Aug 10: India’s pride roared a little louder on World Lion Day 2025 as Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that the Asiatic lion population has climbed to 891, a 32% jump since 2020 and the highest figure in modern history. Addressing a gathering at Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Devbhumi Dwarka, Yadav called the rise “a global symbol of successful wildlife conservation” and traced the species’ remarkable recovery from just 284 lions in 1990. “If the Asiatic lion exists anywhere in the world today, it is in Gir, Gujarat, a testament to decades of relentless conservation,” he said, crediting the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who launched Project Lion in 2020 to safeguard the “King of the Jungle.”

The minister lauded forest officials, local communities, and wildlife enthusiasts for their role in reversing the lion’s decline. He said India’s conservation policies, rooted in co-existence, have not only doubled the population in a decade but also positioned Gujarat as the undisputed global home of the species. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel echoed the sentiment, describing the Asiatic lion as both “the pride of Gujarat and the heritage of India.” He said the state’s conservation drive has restored lions to the Barda region after 143 years, marking a milestone in ecological balance.mPatel also unveiled a ₹180-crore wildlife conservation initiative aimed at expanding lion habitats, upgrading veterinary care, and boosting eco-tourism infrastructure.

“Proactive habitat management, human–wildlife conflict mitigation, and community livelihood programmes will ensure that the roar of the Asiatic lion never fades,” he said.

Project Lion: First announced by PM Modi during his 74th Independence Day address in 2020, Project Lion is a 10-year, ₹2,927.71-crore plan to secure the species’ long-term survival. It includes a National Referral Centre for wildlife healthcare in Junagadh district, and the expansion of lion habitats beyond Gir to reduce pressure on core areas. Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning 192 sq km across Porbandar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts, is emerging as the species’ second home. Natural migration in 2023 led to a population of 17 lions, six adults and 11 cubs, and plans are underway for a 248-hectare safari park to promote eco-tourism. The Government of India has granted in-principle approval for the Barda Safari Park and Zoo, expected to boost both conservation and local economies.

World Lion Day celebrations were held simultaneously across 11 districts of the Greater Gir Lion Landscape, home to around 35,000 sq km of the lions’ range. Lakhs of students participated, with satellite-linked events reaching classrooms in towns and villages. From the wilderness of Gir to the grasslands of Barda, the numbers tell a story of revival, one forged by scientific management, community involvement, and political will.
