The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 452.35 points to 86,159.02 — its record peak. The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 122.85 points to hit a lifetime high of 26,325.80.

Congress MPs move adjournment motion in Parliament seeking urgent debate on SIR

New Delhi, Dec 01: Congress MPs Manickam Tagore and Vijay Kumar Vasanth on Monday moved an adjournment motion in Parliament seeking an urgent debate on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the country.

Calling the revision exercise as “unplanned and one-sided,” the Congress MPs have flagged the alleged extreme pressure put on Booth Level Officers (BLOs), resulting in deaths and exhaustion.
Earlier today, Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore flagged the repeated suicides of BLOs, saying that the Election Commission is doing “vote chori” in the name of SIR.

“We want the Parliament to function and the discussions to take place. We want a discussion on SIR, which is an attack on democracy, on ‘vote chori’, which is where the Election Commission has become an agent itself. BLOs are dying, suicides are happening in the 12 states where SIR is happening,” Tagore said.

Kanyakumari MP Vijay Kumar also moved an adjournment motion today.

“The exercise is unplanned and one-sided, with no consultation or support, forcing BLOs into extreme pressure where many have collapsed and some have died,” the MP claimed in his motion.
He criticised the Election Commission for not investigating these deaths or providing data, calling this institutional cruelty. “The public is facing confusion and repeated verification, making the SIR anti-people and anti-democratic,” he added.

The MP demands that the SIR be suspended, BLO deaths be investigated, families compensated, election procedures reformed, and the Election Commission summoned to explain its actions.

The second phase of the SIR exercise covers Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, following the successful completion of the first phase in Bihar. The final voter list will be published on February 14, 2026.

Meanwhile, the 6th Session of the 18th Lok Sabha and the 269th Session of the Rajya Sabha will commence on Monday, December 1, at 11 am, marking the beginning of the Winter Session of Parliament. The session will conclude on December 19.

VPN services suspended for 2 months in J&K’s Rajouri and Poonch districts

VPN services suspended for 2 months in J&K’s Rajouri and Poonch districts

Jammu, Dec 01: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri and Poonch districts have ordered the suspension of virtual private network (VPN) services for two months, citing potential misuse of the technology by anti-social elements for unlawful activities.

Poonch became the second border district in the Jammu division on Sunday to see VPN services suspended, following Rajouri where a similar order was issued in the past two days.

Poonch District Magistrate Ashok Kumar Sharma ordered the suspension of VPNs under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) with immediate effect.

“The SSP informed that there has been an unprecedented high usage of VPNs in the past few days at different locations of the district by suspicious internet users,” the DM said in the order.

The order noted that VPN traffic is encrypted, creates a point-to-point tunnel, masks IP addresses and can sidestep website blocks and firewalls, thereby making sensitive data vulnerable to cyber attacks. “Adversaries can use VPN services to create an atmosphere of fear in view of the prevailing situation,” the DM said.

The directive will apply to all individuals, institutions, cyber cafes and internet service providers operating in the district, and anyone found violating it shall be punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the order added. The DM has directed the SSP to ensure implementation of the order in letter and spirit.

In Rajouri, District Magistrate Abhishek Sharma on Friday issued an immediate two-month suspension of all VPN services in the border district, citing public safety concerns and the potential misuse of such platforms for unlawful activities. The Rajouri directive was issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita following a communication from the police.

Rajouri SSP Gaurav Sikarwar, in his communication to the civil administration, flagged unprecedented and suspicious use of VPN services across various areas of the district. The DM’s order in Rajouri reiterated that VPNs, by masking IP addresses, bypassing website blocks and firewalls, and transmitting encrypted data, were being used by a significant number of suspicious internet users.

“Such activities have the potential to be exploited for anti-national purposes including spreading inflammatory content, coordinating activities prejudicial to public order, and posing cyber security threats,” the Rajouri district magistrate said, underlining that the preventive step has been taken in the interest of maintaining law and order and safeguarding sensitive information.

Winter Session of Parliament begins today

Winter Session of Parliament begins today

New Delhi, Dec 01: The Winter Session of Parliament begins Monday and will continue until December 19, featuring 15 sittings spread across the 19-day schedule.

The government has lined up a heavy legislative agenda, with at least 13 bills set to be introduced, including major economic and national security–related proposals. At the same time, the Opposition is preparing to mount pressure on the government over the SIR issue, national security concerns, and several other pending matters.

Among the most prominent bills slated for introduction are The Central Excise Amendment Bill, 2025, and The Health Security National Security Cess Bill, 2025.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to move these bills in the Lok Sabha. The two pieces of legislation aim to replace the existing GST compensation cess on “sin goods” such as tobacco and pan masala with a revised excise levy.

According to sources, this move is intended to ensure that the current high taxation levels on such goods continue, while also creating a more stable revenue stream for national security and public health spending.

The Health Security National Security Cess Bill, 2025 specifically proposes a cess on machines and processes used to manufacture specified goods. The stated purpose of this cess is to “augment the resources for meeting expenditure on national security and public health,” marking a significant shift in how these sectors might be funded going forward.

Additionally, the government has listed several other important bills for consideration during the session. These include the National Highways (Amendment) Bill, the Atomic Energy Bill, the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, and the Higher Education Commission of India Bill, 2025.

The Atomic Energy Bill is expected to draw particular attention, as it may open the door for private companies to establish nuclear power plants—an unprecedented shift in India’s nuclear energy framework.

Beyond legislation, Parliament will also take up discussion and voting on the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2025-26, a crucial exercise in government expenditure planning.

On the Opposition side, parties have already made it clear that they will demand an immediate and comprehensive debate on the SIR issue.

They have warned that disruptions may be inevitable if the government refuses to allow discussion. The Opposition also intends to raise matters relating to national security—especially in the wake of the recent Delhi car explosion, along with labour codes, the role of Governors, and pending dues owed to states.

While the government is focused on pushing its legislative commitments, it has also conveyed its willingness to commemorate the 150th year of Vande Mataram. However, it remains to be seen how smoothly the session proceeds amid the Opposition’s firm stance.

India beat South Africa by 17 runs take 1-0 lead in 3-match series

Ranchi, Nov 30: Virat Kohli’s stupendous 52nd ODI hundred, Kuldeep Yadav’s left-arm wrist spin trickery and Harshit Rana’s pace laced India’s tense 17-run win over South Africa in the first match of the three-match series here on Sunday.

India now lead the rubber 1-0, and the second match will be played at Raipur on Wednesday.

Once Kohli’s 120-ball 135 (11×4, 7×6) guided India to a massive 349 for 8, South Africa failed to produce the Herculean batting effort needed for a tall chase, folding for 332.

Kuldeep (4/68) and Harshit (3/65) struck at vital junctures as India quelled the hints of Protean fightback.

Matthew Breeetzke (72), Marco Jansen (70) and Corbin Bosch (kept SA afloat after the visitors found themselves at 11 for three.

Earlier, Kohli’s hundred and his 136-run stand with long-time associate Rohit Sharma (57, 51b) was the engine room of India’s charge to a 300-plus total.

Rohit too had his own moment when he smashed a world record 352nd six in ODI cricket to go past former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi’s mark of 351.

KL Rahul gave a late thrust to the innings with a 56-ball 60.

Brief scores: India: 349/8 in 50 overs (Virat Kohli 135, Rohit Sharma 57, KL Rahul 60; Ottneil Baartman 2/60, Nandre Burger 2/65) beat South Africa: 332 all out in 49.2 overs (Matthew Breeetzke 72, Marco Jansen 70; Kuldeep Yadav 4/68, Harshit Rana 3/65) by 17 runs.
