Photographer captures stunning view of Milky way from village in south India

0

Srinagar, Aug 06: The Milky Way, a sweeping spiral of stars that paints a milky trail across the night sky, has long captivated both astronomers and photographers. Its ethereal glow—visible from Earth as a soft band of light—is a favorite subject for those chasing cosmic beauty. One such magical sight recently surfaced on Instagram, drawing widespread attention after a photographer captured it from an unexpected location: his own village in South India.

Brijesh Naik, a Mangalore-based photographer, shared the breathtaking shot on Instagram, revealing that it was taken in his hometown of Kepu village, near Mangalore.

Describing the serendipitous moment, he wrote, “There was no electricity in the village for two days due to heavy rains and strong winds. I was getting restless at home, so I stepped outside for some fresh air—then I looked up.”

The photographer’s shots impressed nature enthusiasts and travellers on social media. Here are some of the reactions:
“Light pollution is the greatest enemy for astrophotography. Your captures are really awesome. I wish I could take photos like this too,” one user wrote. Another shared, “I still remember those nights from my childhood, around 2012, lying on the rooftop, staring at the stars. The Milky Way was clearly visible at that time. I used to wonder… what’s really out there.”

“No power that night… but the universe lit up,” he wrote, adding in the caption, “Saw Milky Way for the first time.”
The video ended with photos of the Milky Way galaxy that he captured that night.

Over 130 small Russian towns at risk of disappearing: Experts

Russia rejects possible deployment of NATO peacekeepers in Ukraine

Srinagar, Aug 06: Russia is experiencing its sharpest population decline since the Covid-19 pandemic, despite President Vladimir Putin’s repeated claims that reversing the demographic crisis is a top national priority, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Recent research reported by Izvestia has raised concerns over the possible disappearance of more than 130 small towns across Russia, home to around 3.4 million people. These towns, many with populations under 50,000, are grappling with severe demographic decline and shrinking job opportunities.

Citing findings from the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), the TASS news agency noted that the population in these towns has dropped by over 314,000 in the past decade. The sharpest declines were observed in towns historically reliant on coal, metal, and lumber industries—particularly in northern regions.

Researchers identified towns in the Bryansk, Novgorod, Kirov, and Krasnoyarsk regions as being among the most vulnerable. Experts caution that without immediate policy intervention, many of these settlements may vanish entirely, potentially leaving thousands without access to essential services and livelihoods. The industrial crisis and continued population drift toward larger urban centres increase the risk of towns being lost entirely,” the researchers told Moscow TImes.

Among those most at risk are Verkhny Tagil in the Sverdlovsk region, Trubchevsk in Bryansk, Inta in the Republic of Komi, Kem and Medvezhyegorsk in the Republic of Karelia and Torzhok in the Tver region, all of which have seen steep population declines.

Official data from Rosstat, the Federal Statistics Service, shows that the number of births in 2024 dropped to 1.22 million—down 3.4% from 2023—marking the lowest birth rate since 1999. At the same time, the number of deaths rose by 3.3% to 1.82 million, the first increase since the peak of the pandemic in 2021.

Overall, the rate of population decline accelerated by around 20% compared to the previous year. Analysts attribute this worsening trend in part to the ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its third year, which continues to strain the country’s social and economic system.

Body with bullet injury found in Jammu park, suicide suspected

Chandigarh, Aug 06: At least two people were killed and three others injured in a high-intensity blast at an oxygen-making unit in Punjab’s Mohali, near here, on Wednesday, police said.

Around 25 employees were present in the unit, located in the Industrial Area in Phase 9, when the blast took place.

High Tech Gases Private Limited supplies medical oxygen to the PGI, Chandigarh, and other government hospitals in the region.

The cause of the blast is yet to be known.

Senior police and civil administration officials, including the sub-divisional magistrate, rushed to the spot immediately after the blast was reported.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Damandeep Kaur confirmed the incident.

The police did not rule out the possibility of gas leakage and vacated nearby buildings as a precaution.

Locals said windows of nearby buildings were shattered by the impact. Mutilated body parts were strewn at the blast site, with oxygen cylinders lying around.

Debris of the cylinders also fell at Kambala village, around one km away, locals said.

Police, fire tenders and ambulances were engaged in the relief and rescue operation.

The deceased have been identified as Asif, a resident of Lucknow, and Davinder. Asif joined the factory nearly one and a half years ago.

“Two people have died in the explosion, and four others are seriously injured. We are currently investigating the exact cause of the blast,” said a fire officer at the accident spot.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Harsimran Singh Bal said they received information at around 9.25 a.m. “Our team reached the site immediately. The investigation is underway, and all further action will be taken as per the law.”

The factory has been in operation since 1993.

Local authorities said strict action would be taken against those responsible, and if any negligence is found.

The injured were rushed to the hospital, and the bodies were being taken for post-mortem, the officials added.

RBI to make process easy for legal heirs claiming money from bank accounts of deceased customers

RBI cuts policy rate by 25 bps to 6 pc, second in a row

Mumbai, Aug 06: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Wednesday that it has decided to standardise and simplify the procedure for settlement of claims in respect of deposit accounts of deceased customers of banks so that bereaved families do not face any hardship in getting the money or valuables due to them.

Currently, the procedure for settling claims in respect of deceased customers varies across banks. The RBI has decided to streamline and standardise these across all banks to facilitate the settlement of these claims.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, “We will be standardising the procedure for settlement of claims in respect of bank accounts, and articles kept in safe custody or safe deposit lockers of deceased bank customers. This is expected to make the settlement more convenient and simpler.”

A draft circular in this regard shall be issued shortly for public consultation, the RBI said.

Under the provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, a nomination facility is available in respect of deposit accounts, articles kept in safe custody or safe deposit lockers. This is intended to facilitate expeditious settlement of claims or return of articles or release of contents of safe deposit locker upon death of a customer and to minimise hardship caused to family members.

The extant instructions require banks to adopt a simplified procedure to facilitate expeditious and hassle-free settlement of claims made by survivors, nominees or legal heirs, but the procedures vary across banks.

“With a view to enhancing customer service standards, it has been decided to streamline the procedures and standardise the documentation to be submitted to the banks. A draft circular in this regard shall be issued shortly for public consultation,” the RBI statement said.

The RBI has also decided to introduce auto-bidding facilities in Retail Direct for Investment and Re-investment in T-bills.

“To enable investors to systematically plan their investments, an auto-bidding facility for Treasury bills (T-bills), covering both investment and re-investment options, has been enabled in Retail Direct. The new functionality helps investors to mandate automatic placement of bids in primary auctions of T-bills,” according to an RBI statement.

The Retail Direct portal was launched in November 2021 to facilitate retail investors to open their Gilt accounts with the Reserve Bank under the Retail Direct Scheme. The scheme allows retail investors to buy Government Securities (G-Secs) in primary auctions as well as buy and sell G-Secs in the secondary market. Since the launch of the Scheme, various new features, in terms of product as well as payment options, have been introduced, including the launch of a mobile app in May 2024.

28 children killed in Gaza daily, says UN report

Tel Aviv, August 06: The United Nations in its report stated that approximately 28 children are being killed daily in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict and its restrictions on the delivery of direly needed humanitarian assistance.

“Death by bombardments. Death by malnutrition and starvation. Death by lack of aid and vital services. In Gaza, an average of 28 children a day – the size of a classroom – have been killed. Gaza’s children need food, water, medicine and protection. More than anything, they need a ceasefire, NOW,” the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said in a post on X..

Since October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, more than 18,000 children have been killed in Gaza, approximately one child every hour, with total Palestinian deaths exceeding 60,933 and over 150,000 injured, as per Al Jazeera.

Israel has closed Gaza’s crossings since March 2, only allowing 86 trucks of aid into the besieged enclave daily, a figure equal to just 14 per cent of the minimum 600 trucks needed each day to meet the basic needs of the population, according to data from Gaza’s Government Media Office.

The lack of aid has led to an unprecedented famine in Gaza, as reported by Al Jazeera.

UN experts and more than 150 humanitarian organisations have called for a permanent ceasefire, to allow for aid deliveries and the psychological recovery of what they’ve dubbed a “lost generation”.

On Wednesday, at least 83 people were killed by Israeli attacks across Gaza, including 58 aid seekers.

The Palestinian Civil Defence appealed to the UN and aid agencies for “urgent assistance and intervention” to supply the enclave with fuel for equipment to rescue the wounded.
The Israeli army said that six countries have airdropped 110 more aid packages into the enclave, bringing the total amount of airdropped packages since July 27 to 785.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met top security officials to discuss war options, including the full occupation of Gaza, as per Al Jazeera.

Bird crashes into plane’s nose, panic ensues mid-air on Paris-bound flight

Srinagar, Aug 06: A passenger onboard captured chaotic scenes from inside the plane, later recounting the terrifying experience to ABC News. Initially, they believed it was just turbulence.
“We thought it was the turbulence the captain mentioned, but then we started hearing a noise… and we were like, okay, something’s going on,” said the passenger.

Another video circulating on social media shows nearly half of the plane’s nose completely destroyed.

Following the incident, Iberia released the following statement assuring safety of all involved. “The entire flight crew, including pilots and cabin crew, acted with the utmost professionalism in managing the situation and attending to the passengers.

ABC News contributor Col. Steve Ganyard, USMC (Ret.), stated that bird strikes are very common. “Fewer than 10% of those bird strikes cause damage to the aircraft,” Ganyard said, “In this case, the damage was severe enough to one of the engines that it caused smoke coming into the cabin,”

The flight, headed for Paris Orly Airport, was forced to return to Madrid just 20 minutes after takeoff, according to the New York Post. Relief swept through the cabin as the plane landed safely, prompting passengers to break into applause.

PM Modi hails Amit Shah as longest-serving Home Minister, hints at bigger role ahead

Srinagar, Aug 06: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently praised Union Minister Amit Shah, acknowledging him as India’s longest-serving Home Minister, while hinting that this achievement is just the beginning of his journey. This statement has sparked speculation within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that Modi’s endorsement might signal a more significant role for the 60-year-old Gujarat lawmaker in the future.

Addressing MPs at the NDA parliamentary party meeting, Modi referred to Shah and said he had surpassed the tenure of LK Advani who was previously the longest-serving home minister. “Yeh to abhi shuruwat hai…abhi aur aage jaana hai (This is just the beginning… he has a long way to go),” a person privy to the meeting quoted the PM as saying.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endorsement of Amit Shah acknowledges his capability as Home Minister. Shah’s tenure has been marked by significant points, including reducing Left Wing Extremism, curbing terror financing, and initiatives like the abrogation of Article 370 and the push for a Uniform Civil Code.

Shah’s organizational prowess was instrumental in the BJP’s resurgence in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, and he has played a crucial role in expanding the party’s presence across India, securing wins in previously challenging states like Assam, Manipur, and Tripura.

Modi’s confidence in Shah’s abilities is further underscored by his prediction that Left Wing Extremism will end by 2026. Shah’s blend of ideological commitment and pragmatic decision-making has earned him recognition within the party and beyond.

BJP leader, anonymously said that the PM’s statement can be interpreted as a reinforcement of the close ties between the two and also suggests a clarity in party hierarchy “There is a section of people who have been speculating about some issues including the hierarchy …but the PM’s statement seems to have put that perception to rest”.

Bangladesh announces national elections for February 2026

Bangladesh announces national elections for February 2026

New Delhi, Aug 06: Bangladesh’s interim government which is seen as an authoritarian rule has announced that the country will hold parliamentary elections in February 2026, its first since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year. The decision, declared by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus during a televised address marking the anniversary of the July Uprising, marks a key step in the country’s return to electoral democracy.

Yunus, who took over the leadership of the caretaker government following the collapse of Hasina’s regime in August 2024, said the interim administration would formally request the Election Commission to conduct the polls before the start of Ramadan. The Nobel laureate reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and inclusive elections, pledging full support to the electoral body.

The announcement comes amid ongoing political flux and deepening divisions over the timeline and legitimacy of upcoming elections. Yunus had initially proposed June 2026 as a possible date, but pressure from various political groups including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and the student-led National Citizen Party (NCP)pushed for an earlier schedule.

February’s vote will be the first since the toppling of Hasina’s 15-year rule, which ended after weeks of mass student-led protests last year. Hasina left the country in early August 2024. She currently faces trial in absentia in Bangladesh on charges related to a violent crackdown on protestors during her final months in office. The charges include allegations of crimes against humanity, which she denies.

As part of his address, Yunus also reiterated the interim government’s reform agenda by reading out the “July Declaration” a document that outlines a framework for constitutional reform, justice for past abuses, and the institutionalisation of democratic norms. While supporters of the declaration hail it as a turning point, critics argue that it lacks legal weight and could remain symbolic unless accompanied by concrete institutional changes.

Since Hasina’s departure, the Awami League has been banned and hundreds of its supporters have been detained without trial, according to human rights groups and local media reports. The situation remains volatile, with sporadic unrest and concerns about political violence still looming.
