Jammu, Aug 05: Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday attached the immovable property of a Pakistan-based terror handler in Kathua district as part of its efforts to break the chain of the terror ecosystem.

Land measuring 16.5 marlas belonging to Mohd Ashraf, a resident of Lowang village of Bani tehsil, was attached on the orders of the Additional Sessions Court in Kathua, a police spokesman said.

He said Ashraf joined terror activities over two decades ago and later shifted his base across the border.

The action was taken under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as the accused is wanted in a terror-related case registered at the Bani police station in 2001, the spokesman said.

He said the property was identified as belonging to the absconder during the course of investigation by police in the case.

Trump says he will raise tariffs on India ‘very substantially’ in next 24 hours

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

New York/Moscow, Aug 05: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said India has not been a good trading partner and announced that he will raise the tariffs on New Delhi “very substantially” over the next 24 hours because it is buying Russian oil.

“With India, what people don’t like to say about India, they’re the highest tariff nation. They have the highest tariff of anybody. We do very, very little business with India because their tariffs are so high,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC Squawk Box.

“India has not been a good trading partner, because they do a lot of business with us, but we don’t do business with them. So we settled on 25% (tariff), but I think I’m going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they’re buying Russian oil. They’re fuelling the war machine. And if they’re going to do that, then I’m not going to be happy,” he added.

When asked about the trade deal with India that seemed imminent, Trump said the “sticking point” with India is that its tariffs are too high.

“Now I will say this, India went from the highest tariffs ever, they will give us zero tariffs….But that’s not good enough, because of what they’re doing with oil.”

A day earlier, Trump said he will “substantially” raise US tariffs on India, accusing the country of buying massive amounts of Russian oil and selling it for big profits.

Hours later, India mounted an unusually sharp counterattack on the US and the European Union for their “unjustified and unreasonable” targeting of New Delhi for its procurement of Russian crude oil.

Firmly rejecting the criticism, India pointed out the double standards in targeting it on the issue and said both the US and the EU are continuing their trade relations with Russia.

“Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

The Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilisers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel, and machinery and transport equipment, the MEA said.

“Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilisers as well as chemicals,” it added.

“In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the MEA said.

On Tuesday, Russia defended India’s right to select trade partners, saying sovereign countries have the right to select their partners in trade and economic cooperation based on their interests.

“We believe that sovereign countries must have and do have the right to choose their trade partners, the partners in trade and economic cooperation, on their own and independently determine those modes of trade and economic cooperation that suit the interests of a country in question,” Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, commenting on the US’ threats regarding India.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakahrova accused the US administration of continuing a neocolonial policy against the nations of the Global South to maintain American hegemony.

“Sanctions and restrictions are a regrettable reality of today’s historical stage, which affects the entire world,” Zakaharova said in a statement.

“Washington cannot come to terms with the loss of hegemony in the emerging multipolar world order and continues to pursue a neocolonial policy in an attempt to maintain its position, using politicised levers of economic pressure against those who refuse to follow in its wake in the international arena,” she added.

On August 1, Trump signed an Executive Order titled ‘Further Modifying The Reciprocal Tariff Rates’, raising tariffs for over five dozen countries, including a steep 25 per cent for India.

The executive order, however, did not mention the “penalty” that Trump had said India will have to pay because of its purchases of Russian military equipment and energy.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, in an interview to Fox News Sunday, stated that President Trump has said very clearly that “it is not acceptable for India to continue financing” the Ukraine war by purchasing oil from Russia.

Last week, Trump mounted a sharp attack on India and Russia for their close ties and said the two countries can take their “dead economies down together”, a remark which prompted New Delhi to say that India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Trump had earlier announced a 25 per cent tariff on imports of Indian goods along with an unspecified “penalty” for buying “vast majority” of Russian military equipment and crude oil.

Declaring that the US has a massive trade deficit with India, Trump had said that while “India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the world, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any country.

“Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of energy, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine — All things not good!” Trump had said.

Srinagar, Aug 05: The anti-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered the fifth day on Tuesday as security forces tightened the noose around the ultras engaged in the gun battle with them.

As tight cordon has been laid in the Akhal area, the authorities on Tuesday evacuated some of the villagers who needed medical attention.

He said the security forces were using all means, including drones and helicopters, to track down the terrorists.

Two terrorists have been killed while at least two security forces personnel were injured in the encounter which began on Friday after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in a forest area at Akhal in the south Kashmir district, following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists there.

After an initial exchange of fire between the two sides on Friday evening, the operation was halted for the night, the officials said.

The cordon was strengthened, and additional reinforcements were rushed to the area.

Firing resumed on Saturday morning, during which two terrorists were killed, the officials said.

August 5 marks ‘black day’ for entire nation: Mehbooba Mufti

August 5 marks 'black day' for entire nation: Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar, Aug 5: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said August 5 marks “a black day” for the entire nation, and the abrogation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status was the “beginning of a broader assault” on constitutional values of the country.

The PDP also claimed that its president, along with party workers, was barred from stepping out of the party office to take out a protest against the “unilateral and unconstitutional” abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.

“August 5 marks a black day not just for Jammu & Kashmir, but for the entire nation. On this day, the Constitution was subverted not by foreign hands, but from within, by a brute majority in the heart of our democracy,” Mehbooba said in a post on X.

She said the “unconstitutional” abrogation of J-K’s special status was not an end, “it was the beginning of a broader assault on constitutional values”.

“J-K was turned into a laboratory its people disempowered, its land dispossessed, its demography targeted. What many saw as a local issue was a warning for all,” she charged.

“Today, that warning is unfolding across the country. In Bihar (SIR) threatens to disenfranchise lakhs. From Tamil Nadu to Kashmir non-local voters are being added en masse, paving the way for demographic manipulation and electoral distortion,” she said.

“If India does not wake up now, what began in J-K will soon define the nation,” she added.

Flaying the curbs placed on its leaders, the PDP said, “Suppressing democratic dissent has become the new normal in Kashmir”.

They said PDP leaders and workers assembled at the party office and tried to take out a protest march against the abrogation of Article 370 on its sixth anniversary, but were not allowed by the police to move out.

They party leaders and workers then staged the protest march at the party office.

Speaking to reporters, PDP leader Iltija Mufti said, “On August 5, 2019, the illegal abrogation of Article 370 was done, and the Constitution and the flag of J-K were taken away from us”.

“This is the change that has taken place in the six years. We are a legal party, and even six years after the abrogation of Article 370, we are not being allowed to protest. We were put under house arrest six years ago and the common people of J&K, and political parties were put under arrest,” she said.

She said there has been no change even after six years.

“We have been kept here inside PDP office like animals. A huge CRPF vehicle has been stationed here and we are not being allowed to move forward. We told them that we wanted to take out a peaceful protest. But were not allowed. Nothing has changed here,” she claims.

Iltija Mufti asked which part of the Indian Constitution is being implemented here? “We are being stripped off our fundamental right to speak and peacefully protest. Not just our special status, flag, and constitution, but efforts are being made to take our voices as well,” she added.

What’s fueling the new-age wellness health craze?

What’s fueling the new-age wellness health craze?

Srinagar, Aug 05: After protein powders and weight-loss pills, the next big trend in wellness is personalised gut health solutions. With almost every function in the body linked to the gut and its metabolic activity, people are now seeking more targeted approaches. This shift has led to a boom in gut-focused brands offering tailored, actionable plans—moving away from the old one-size-fits-all methods.

Probiotic drinks are no longer the only option. Today’s gut health products are more advanced, combining multi-strain probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, and botanicals that claim to support not just digestion, but also immunity, brain function, and even skin health.

“Today’s health-conscious individuals aren’t content with multivitamins and healthy diets. They want data-driven, personalised solutions. Gut health is one of the most natural ways to support overall well-being,” said Mukul Shah, founder of Guttify, an Ayurveda-inspired brand offering at-home gut testing kits and dietary guidance.

The gut microbiome — a diverse community of microbes in our digestive system — does much more than just aid digestion. It’s closely connected to our immune system, mood, metabolism, and even skin health. “A healthy, balanced gut is now widely viewed as the cornerstone of overall well-being — and consumers are taking notice,” said Shah.

A healthy gut is increasingly being linked to stronger immunity, better digestion, sharper mental clarity, and even protection against chronic diseases,” said Dr. Vikas Jindal, consultant in gastroenterology at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi. “People are now more focused on prevention. With stress, poor eating habits, and antibiotic overuse disrupting gut bacteria, specialised gut-support products are becoming more mainstream,” he added.

For individuals dealing with issues like IBS or lactose intolerance, these targeted formulations can help manage symptoms and may lower the risk of metabolic or autoimmune conditions over time, Dr. Jindal noted.

The future of gut health lies in personalisation. “Instead of generic probiotics, brands now offer customised solutions based on individual microbiome analysis,” said Shah. Consumers send stool samples to labs, and in return receive personalised supplement plans and apps to track their progress.

Platforms like BugSpeaks use advanced sequencing technology to map gut flora and identify imbalances linked to over 20 health conditions. “These tests transform raw data into actionable advice — from tailored probiotics to diet and lifestyle guidance,” said Dr. Dhar.

Article 370 abrogation: Police thwart NC protest march in J-K

Srinagar, Aug 5: Police on Tuesday foiled a protest march by the ruling National Conference (NC) here against the Centre’s August 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 and divide the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories.

Led by NC Kashmir president Showkat Ahmad Mir, MLAs and senior leaders assembled at the party headquarters Nawa-i-Subah here and raised slogans against the Centre’s decision taken on August 5, 2019, and called for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Raising slogans like “August 5, 2019, decisions are not acceptable”, “Black laws are not acceptable” and “Restore Articles 370 and 35A”, the protesters tried to march towards the Lal Chowk city centre but were not allowed to step out of the party office complex by police, who shut the gates of Nawa-i-Subah.

NC state spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said police did not allow the party leaders to move out and even “pushed some leaders”.

“Our MLA Salman Sagar was injured in the melee. He suffered foot injuries,” Dar said.

He said the NC activists wanted to march towards the historic clock tower at Lal Chowk to register their protest against the Centre’s August 2019 decisions.

“We also wanted to press our demand for the restoration of statehood as it has been six years now (since Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded to a union territory),” he added.

Meanwhile, Peoples Conference chief Sajad Lone said August 5 will always be a “brutal reminder of undermining of democracy” and “an ugly example of selective targeting”.

“This was the day when whatever little was left from the glories of the past was taken away. I will never lose hope. We will get what has been taken away. If the glories don’t last, the inglorious won’t last either,” Lone said in a post on X.

Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said August 5 is a “painful reminder of a dark moment in our recent history”.

“On this day in 2019, the sudden and sweeping constitutional changes by Centre left deep scars on the hearts and minds of the people in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I have said it before and I will say it again: New Delhi must uphold the dignity and democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The restoration of these rights is not an act of generosity, it is a constitutional and moral obligation,” Bukhari wrote on X.

He said the region has gone through a prolonged phase of violence and bloodshed, and the people have suffered immensely over the past several decades, and “therefore they long for peace, justice, and dignity — fundamental aspirations that can no longer be ignored”.

“This is the right time for New Delhi to initiate a genuine, inclusive and meaningful dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in order to address their issues and grievances and move towards a lasting resolution,” Bukhari said.

Man buys MacBook in Vietnam, enjoys 11-day beach vacation — all for less than price of laptop in India

Man buys MacBook in Vietnam, enjoys 11-day beach vacation — all for less than price of laptop in India

Srinagar, Aug 05: A Reddit user has gone viral for pulling off what many are calling the ultimate tech hack — buying a brand-new MacBook and enjoying an 11-day vacation in Vietnam, all for less than what the device alone would cost in India.

“Final total I spent: MacBook + 11-day trip total: Rs 2,08,117 (before refund). After tax refund: Rs 1,97,000 approx. So if I deduct the cost of the MacBook alone, my 11-night Vietnam trip was just Rs 48K — and that too while working!” the post said.

In a detailed Reddit post, the user explained how he saved big by dodging India’s steep import duties, GST, and Apple’s premium pricing. “If you’re planning to buy a MacBook or iPhone worth over ₹2 lakh in India, trust me, it’s worth making a short trip to Vietnam. You’ll get the device cheaper — and squeeze in a mini vacation,” he wrote.

The post immediately went viral, with a range of reactions. “Such a great post. Although I just got my Mac your post really made me wanna visit Vietnam for no reason,” a user wrote. “Woohoo champ. I have travelled to Vietnam twice in past and I just loved the country. Probably will be travelling again for work later this year and I am definitely inspired by you,” another user commented.

He booked the cheapest round-trip flight to Hanoi, worked remotely during his stay, and spent his free time soaking in the sights — from local cafes to beaches. Determined to get the best bargain, he visited more than 15 stores before making the purchase.

While the story sounds like a tech lover’s fantasy, it also sheds light on the high cost of premium gadgets in India — and how some buyers are getting creative to beat the system.
