UK, Canada and Australia recognise Palestinian state in historic shift despite US, Israel pushback

Srinagar, Sep 21: Britain, Canada and Australia on Sunday formally recognised a Palestinian state in a coordinated diplomatic move aimed at reviving prospects for a two-state solution, despite strong opposition from Israel and the United States.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that the UK was extending recognition, describing the decision as a “historic moment” intended to “revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis.”

His announcement followed similar statements from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The move is largely symbolic but significant, given the UK’s historic role in the Middle East. Britain was the governing power of Palestine after World War I and author of the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which supported the creation of a Jewish homeland while pledging not to prejudice Palestinian rights.

Starmer said Hamas would have no role in any future governance and must release Israeli hostages still held from the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Canada said its recognition was accompanied by “direct commitments” from the Palestinian Authority to reform governance, hold elections in 2026, and exclude Hamas from power.

“This in no way legitimises terrorism, nor is it any reward for it,” Carney said. Australia echoed that position, stressing that Hamas must play no role in the Palestinian state.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin welcomed the announcements, calling them “an irreversible step that preserves the two-state solution and brings us closer to sovereignty and independence.”

Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian mission in London, said the recognition corrected a “colonial-era wrong” dating back to 1917.

More than 140 UN member states already recognise Palestine, and further declarations are expected at this week’s UN General Assembly, including from France and Saudi Arabia.

Israel strongly rejected the move. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted there will “never” be a Palestinian state, while officials dismissed the recognitions as irrelevant gestures that change nothing on the ground.

US President Donald Trump, who visited the UK days earlier, said he “disagreed” with the decision. Washington has argued that recognition rewards Hamas and undermines negotiations.

Despite criticism, UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said recognition was needed to keep the two-state option alive amid what he described as a “historical injustice.”

He noted that Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and the devastation of Gaza had made peace harder to achieve.

Israel has faced increasing diplomatic isolation over its nearly two-year military campaign in Gaza. A UN Commission of Inquiry last week concluded Israel has committed genocide in Gaza — an allegation Israel denies.

“This is not symbolic,” Shahin said. “It is practical, tangible, and irreversible. Today in Gaza, people are systematically murdered. Recognition is a step to hold Israel accountable and to protect the Palestinian people.” (The Telegraph)

He directed the local revenue officials to prepare a detailed report on the losses and submit it to the District Commissioner’s office to facilitate the prompt distribution of compensation to those affected.

‘GST Utsav’ from tomorrow, will be a 'festival of savings' for all countrymen: PM Modi

New Delhi, Sep 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the launch of a nationwide “GST Utsav” from the first day of Navratri on Monday, calling it a festival of savings for the people of India.

In his address to the nation, the Prime Minister said that from September 22, people will be able to buy their favourite items at lower prices as the new GST rates come into effect.

“Next Gen GST reforms being implemented from tomorrow, it is like ‘GST saving festival’,” PM Modi said.

“From tomorrow, you will be able to buy your favourite items with ease. This is like a GST saving festival for every Indian,” the Prime Minister added.

PM Modi said that the poor and the new middle class are getting double benefits after the GST rate cuts.

Greeting citizens on the occasion of Navratri, he said that the new phase of GST reforms will directly benefit the common man, farmers, MSMEs, middle-class families, women and youth.

The government had earlier announced GST rate cuts on September 4, covering a wide range of products — from automobiles to daily consumer items.

This marks the biggest indirect tax reform since the Goods and Services Tax was rolled out in July 2017.

The new system, often called GST 2.0, introduces a two-slab structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent, with an additional 40 per cent rate only for super luxury, sin and demerit goods.

The reforms were cleared by the GST Council at its 56th meeting, where both the Union and state governments reached a consensus.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister’s Office had posted on X that PM Modi would address the nation at 5 p.m.

During his speech, PM Modi underlined that the reforms symbolise the cooperative spirit between the Centre and the states.

The Prime Minister said the decision to move forward with the new tax structure will make goods cheaper, encourage industry, and strengthen India’s economy.

Mithun Manhas files nomination for post of BCCI president

Former J-K cricketer Mithun Manhas emerges as frontrunner for BCCI president’s post

Mumbai, Sep 21: Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas, on Sunday, filed his nomination for the post of BCCI president at the board’s headquarters here ahead of the deadline later this afternoon.

Manhas, who played 157 First-Class, 130 List A and 55 IPL matches in a long domestic career from 1997-98 to 2016-17, had emerged as a front runner to take over the role left vacant by the exit of Roger Binny last month.

The 45-year-old Manhas’ name came to the fore after an informal meeting held in New Delhi, where it was decided by those in power to put forth his name for the role of BCCI president.

A few other key positions in the Indian cricket board will be filled up here next Sunday during the annual general meeting of the Board.

“A new body is being made for the next term. Mithun Manhas is a former player and it was decided to make him the president. Arun Dhumal is the chairman of the IPL governing council and he will continue in that position,” BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla told the media here.

Among those who filed their nominations were BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, IPL governing council chairman Arun Dhumal, and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president and former India cricketer Raghuram Bhat, who is in the fray to become the Board’s treasurer. Prabhtej Bhatia, who was the treasurer will replace Rohan Gauns Desai as the joint secretary. Saurashtra CA president Jaydev Shah will replace Dilip Vengsarkar in the Apex Council.

Saikia filed his nomination to continue as the secretary of the BCCI, having taken up the role in January this year.

“I have been the secretary for the last few months, my colleagues wanted me to file the nominations so I did,” Saikia said. PTI KHS

Saikia said the Indian team for the two-Test series against the West Indies will be picked in a couple of days.

“The team will be picked on September 23 or 25. The selection meeting will be held online,” he said.

The first Test will be played in Ahmedabad from October 2-6 while the second will be in New Delhi from October 10-14.

It will be the first home assignment in the World Test Championship cycle 2025-27 for Shubman Gill’s side. Gill took over as India’s full-time Test captain in June this year ahead of the tour to England.

Peace prerequisite for tourism, sports in J&K: CM Omar

Peace prerequisite for tourism, sports in J&K: CM Omar

Srinagar, Sep 21: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said peace is a basic prerequisite for development, and the tourism and sports sectors to flourish in Jammu and Kashmir.

“For development, tourism or sports… we need peace for everything. If we talk about having day and night matches, and if the situation is not good, then who will come to play in the evening?” Abdullah told reporters here.

He launched the jersey of the Real Kashmir Football Club here.

“Peace is the foundation for everything. The message of today’s programme, the jersey, is also peace,” he added.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had on Saturday said peace was the prerequisite for development in Jammu and Kashmir. Sinha also asserted that some remnants of terrorism remain in the Union Territory.

Abdullah said the responsibility of establishing peace does not fall with him, and asserted that “those who are responsible, should fulfil their responsibility”.

The chief minister said his government is targeted for everything that happens in Jammu and Kashmir, even as law and order is not its domain.

“At least there is something for which we cannot be held responsible because establishing peace is not the responsibility of my government yet. But, our government is targeted for everything,” he said.

On the upgradation of the sports infrastructure, Abdullah said his government has a special focus on sports activities and sports infrastructure.

“There is hardly any assembly segment where some sports infrastructure is not being built by our government. Infrastructure is being built after assessing the interest of the youth in each assembly segment,” he said.

The chief minister said his endeavour is to create sports infrastructure and then hand it over to the youth to utilise it.

“Tournaments, race, etc, are being held at the district and sub-district level. The second edition of the Kashmir marathon is being held on November 2. I want to extend an invitation to the athletes from across the country, especially those who are interested in a half-marathon, to come to Srinagar and hope they will run with us on November 2,” he said.

Asked about the status of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, which was affected by landslides triggered by heavy rain, Abdullah said, “We haven’t been able to do black-topping on the 300 metre stretch that was washed away.

“We will do that after some time, and then vehicles can move freely. But, as of now, no vehicles are stranded,” he said.

Twin girls invite PM Modi to Kashmir to help flood victims

Twin girls invite PM Modi to Kashmir to help flood victims

Anantnag, Sep 21: A video made rounds on social media on Sunday, showing twin girls from Anantnag district inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the valley to see its beauty and help the flood victims.

Zainab and Zaiba, aged eight, from the Kokarnag area of the south Kashmir district, were filmed while they were interacting with BJP leader Ravinder Raina.

The politician was visiting the Jablipora Fruit Mandi to commiserate with the horticulture traders who had suffered huge losses due to the recent highway blockade caused by landslides.

The twins told Raina they wanted the Prime Minister to visit Kashmir and see its beauty.

“We wanted Modi to visit Kashmir because Kashmir is really beautiful. Modi’s visit to Kashmir would have added to the valley’s splendour,” Zainab said, amid loud cheers from those around. “Our Kashmir is beautiful,” she added.

When Raina asked them if they wanted to meet Modi, the little girls said “yes.”

“We want that … he should come to our Kashmir in summer or when winter comes. We are requesting him once again,” Zainab said.

“We have suffered huge losses. Our bridge was washed away in the rain. Apple traders and those who owned orchards suffered terrible losses,” Zaiba said.

The twins also demanded a cold storage facility in the area to store fruits.

“There should be a store where fruits can be kept,” one of them said.

“A cold store?” Raina asked, to which the girls nodded.

“We want to keep apples in those (stores) because apples are one of our fruits which the people of India also like,” Zainab said.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” she said, sending everyone laughing.

Israel kills 34 people in Gaza ahead of UN meeting, where countries will recognise Palestinian state

Israel kills 34 people in Gaza ahead of UN meeting, where countries will recognise Palestinian state

Cairo, Sep 21: Israeli strikes killed at least 34 people in Gaza City overnight, including children, said health officials on Sunday, as Israel presses ahead with its offensive in the famine-stricken city and several countries prepare to recognise a Palestinian state.

Health officials at Shifa Hospital, where most of the bodies were brought, said the dead included 14 people killed in a late-night strike Saturday, which hit a residential block in the southern side of the city. Health staff said a nurse who worked at the hospital was among the dead, along with his wife and three children.

The latest Israeli operation, which began this week, further escalates a conflict that has roiled the Middle East and likely pushes any ceasefire further out of reach. The Israeli military, which says it wants to “destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure” and has urged Palestinians to leave, hasn’t given a timeline for the offensive, but there were indications it could take months.

Several countries to recognise a Palestinian State

Saturday night’s strikes come as some prominent Western countries prepare to recognize Palestinian statehood at the gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday. They include the UK, France, Canada, Australia, Malta, Belgium and Luxembourg. Portugal’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said it will recognise a Palestinian state on Sunday.

Ahead of the UN assembly, peace activists in Israel have hailed the planned recognition of a Palestinian state. On Sunday, a group of more than 60 Jewish and Arab peace and reconciliation organisations, known as It’s Time Coalition, called for an end to the war, the release of the hostages and the recognition of a Palestinian state.

“We refuse to live forever by the sword. The UN decision offers a historic opportunity to move from a death trap to life, from an endless messianic war to a future of security and freedom for both peoples,” said the coalition in a video statement.

Yet a ceasefire remains elusive. Israeli bombardment over the past 23 months has killed more than 65,000 people in Gaza, destroyed vast areas of the strip, displaced around 90 per cent of the population and caused a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with experts saying Gaza City is experiencing famine.

Israel claims killing a Hamas sniper

Israel didn’t respond to the strikes overnight Saturday. In a statement Sunday, the military said it killed Majed Abu Selmiya, who it said was a sniper for Hamas’ military wing and was preparing to carry out more attacks in the Gaza City area, without providing evidence.

The alleged militant is the brother of the director of Shifa hospital, Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiya, who called the allegations a lie and said Israel was trying to justify the killing of civilians. Dr. Selmiya told The Associated Press that his brother, 57, suffered from hypertension, diabetes and had vision problems.

As the attacks continue, Israel has ordered hundreds of thousands of Palestinians sheltering in Gaza City to move south to what it calls a humanitarian zone and opened another corridor south of the city for two days this week to allow more people to evacuate.

Palestinians were streaming out of Gaza City by car and on foot, though many are unwilling to be uprooted again, too weak to leave or unable to afford the cost of moving.

Along the coastal Wadi Gaza route, those too exhausted to continue stopped to catch their breath and give their children a much-needed break from the difficult journey.

Aid groups have warned that forcing thousands of people to evacuate will exacerbate the dire humanitarian crisis. They are appealing for a ceasefire so aid can reach those who need it.

Families of hostages still held by Hamas are also calling for a ceasefire, accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of condemning their loved ones to death by continuing to fight rather than negotiating an end to the war.
