Tarigami slams ‘double standards’ in labour policy, seeks rejection of power surcharge proposal

Srinagar, Nov 22: CPI(M) leader Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami on Saturday criticised what he termed the continuing erosion of labour rights, saying workers are becoming increasingly helpless as labour protections shrink and wages remain stagnant. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the seventh state conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions.

Tarigami said that despite the state being downgraded to a Union Territory, the Minimum Wages Act has still not been fully implemented. He asked why double standards were being followed and said labour laws have been weakened to the extent that even forming trade unions now faces obstructions.

He said daily wagers and low-income workers are struggling to survive on minimal wages, and many receive no compensation or support even in the event of death. He added that unemployment remains widespread and those who do find work often earn too little to sustain their families.

Tarigami said he was shocked that the central government was doing nothing to address the situation and was acting like a mute spectator. He said the ongoing conference would deliberate on joblessness, poor wages and the need to safeguard workers’ rights. He added that the workers’ movement will continue to raise its voice for those who have been pushed to the margins.

He said the proposed twenty percent power surcharge during peak hours would further burden the poor and urged workers affiliated with all political parties, including the National Conference, as well as the Chief Minister, to reject the proposal and give relief to people already facing economic distress.

Tarigami said twenty-nine labour laws have been abolished and replaced with four labour codes that exist mostly on paper, with little real protection for workers. He said social security cannot be claimed when workers do not have the right to protest, form unions or assert basic entitlements. He said workers cannot be caged under the four labour codes and denied their rights in the name of reforms. [KNT]

Every possible measure taken to ensure peace in Srinagar: IG CRPF

Srinagar, Nov 22: Inspector General of CRPF, P K Sharma on Saturday that every possible measure has been taken to ensure a secure and peaceful atmosphere in Srinagar as the Third CRPF Cricket Tournament commenced here.

Speaking with reporters, the IG said the tournament is being organised regularly since 2023 in November-December with an aim to engage the youth and promote sports culture.

“Around 123 teams from Srinagar, Baramulla and Ganderbal showed interest this year, but due to time constraints, a draw was held and sixteen teams were shortlisted,” he said.

The tournament is being organised in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, while the grounds have been provided by the University of Kashmir.

Sharma said special emphasis has been laid on youth participation. “We have kept age restrictions to ensure more involvement of players below 19 and 23 categories. Kashmir has enormous cricketing talent and enthusiasm. Through sports, we want to strengthen peace, harmony and connect positively with the youth,” he added.

On security preparedness in Srinagar, the IG said CRPF along with J&K Police, Army and civil administration is working jointly to maintain peace. “I don’t want to go much into details since today is a sports event, but from our side every possible measure has been taken,” he said.

He added that CRPF has been serving here for the last 35 years and cooperation of people with them continues to grow. —(KNO)

Pir Panjal receives light snowfall, traffic slows along Mughal Road

Srinagar, Nov 22: Parts of the Pir Panjal mountain range, including the high-altitude stretch of Peer Ki Gali on the Mughal Road, witnessed a fresh spell of light snowfall on Saturday morning. The brief yet noticeable snowfall brought a dip in temperature across the region, signaling an early shift toward winter conditions in the upper reaches of Kashmir.

Officials said the snowfall began in early morning and accumulated lightly on the road surface around Peer Ki Gali, located at an elevation of over 11,000 feet. The weather change prompted authorities to issue advisories for travellers using the Mughal Road, particularly during late hours when visibility tends to reduce significantly.

Although traffic movement was not suspended, drivers reported slower movement due to slippery patches forming along the higher curves of the route. Locals in Shopian and Poonch districts said the upper belts had been experiencing cloud cover since morning, followed by occasional flurries of snow.

The weather office has indicated that higher reaches of the Valley may continue to see light precipitation over the next twenty-four hours, while plains are expected to remain dry. Officials added that any significant accumulation will be monitored closely to ensure the Mughal Road remains safe for movement during routine hours.

PM Modi, Aus counterpart Albanese discuss progress in defence, nuclear energy ties on G20 sidelines

Johannesburg, Nov 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, where the two leaders reviewed the steady expansion of the India-Australia partnership and identified key sectors for deeper collaboration.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi described the discussions as “very good”, noting that this year marks five years of the strategic partnership between the two nations.

“Had a very good meeting with PM Albanese of Australia. This year, the strategic partnership between our nations completes 5 years, and these years have witnessed transformative outcomes that have deepened our cooperation. During our talks today, we emphasised three key sectors, defence and security, nuclear energy and trade, where there is immense potential for ties to grow further. The other sectors discussed included education, cultural exchanges and more,” PM Modi wrote.

Meanwhile, a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) release stated that the two leaders expressed satisfaction at the “deepening and diversification of cooperation” between India and Australia, especially following the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020.

According to the MEA, the Australian Prime Minister conveyed solidarity with India over the recent terror attack in the country, and both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the global fight against terrorism.

The meeting covered a broad spectrum of cooperation, including political and strategic engagement, defence and security, energy, trade and investment, critical minerals, technology, mobility, education, and people-to-people linkages.

The Prime Ministers also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

The MEA noted that both leaders acknowledged the momentum generated by frequent high-level exchanges in recent years, underscoring their role in accelerating bilateral progress.

“PM Modi and Albanese agreed that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has laid a strong foundation for an expanded and more resilient bilateral framework. They also renewed their commitment to take the partnership “to even greater heights,” the MEA added.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared vision of India and Australia for a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific, although the MEA release did not provide specific details on regional discussions.

Both leaders emphasised ensuring that cooperation in areas such as defence, critical minerals, technology and education continues to advance in a balanced and mutually beneficial manner.

Prime Minister Modi’s remarks on X echoed this sentiment, underscoring the significant potential across traditional and emerging areas of cooperation.

His reference to nuclear energy, trade and defence as key areas of focus signals continuity in India’s broader strategic engagement with Australia, particularly at a time when both countries are working to strengthen their economic and security frameworks.

The meeting on Friday in Johannesburg added another layer of engagement to the rapidly evolving bilateral relationship that has expanded substantially over the last five years. Both sides reiterated that they remain committed to building on this momentum as they look ahead.

Russia ready to discuss new Ukraine peace plan in detail: Putin

Russia ready to discuss new Ukraine peace plan in detail: Putin

Moscow, Nov 22: Russia is ready for a substantive discussion of the details of a new US-proposed 28-point peace plan on Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

Putin said Russia has received the plan through existing channels of communication with the US administration. It could form the basis of a final peace settlement, but the text has not been discussed with Russia in detail, he added.

Putin noted that Moscow is ready for “peace talks and peaceful resolution of problems,” as well as “a substantive discussion of all the details of the proposed plan,” Xinhua news agency reported.

Russia-Ukraine talks have stalled since the meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump in August in the US state of Alaska.

Earlier Zelensky told Ukrainians that the country was facing some of the most difficult choices in its history.

Zelensky says pressure on his country to agree to a new 28-point peace plan brokered by the US is causing one of the most difficult moments in Ukraine’s history.

He says Ukraine is now facing a choice between “losing its dignity or losing a key partner” – a reference to the United States.

The leaked 28-point plan – drawn up by the Trump administration – proposes that Ukraine: Hand over territory that is not occupied, and would also see Russia holding onto much of the Ukrainian territory that is under its occupation – Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk, hold elections within 100 days and reduce the size of its military and abandon hopes of joining NATO.

Devyani Rana, Muntazir Mehdi take oath as MLAs

Devyani Rana, Muntazir Mehdi take oath as MLAs

Jammu, Nov 21: Newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Nagrota, Devyani Rana and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA from Budgam, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi on Friday took the oath of office at the J&K Legislature complex in the winter capital.

Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly (LA), Abdul Rahim Rather administered the oath to them.

Devyani took the oath in Dogri while Muntazir Mehdi took the oath in Urdu.

Senior BJP leaders, including MP Rajya Sabha and J&K president Sat Sharma; Leader of Opposition, Sunil Kumar Sharma; MLAs Sham Lal Sharma, Vikram Randhawa, besides others, accompanied Devyani, while PDP MLA Waheed-Ur-Rehman Para accompanied Muntazir Mehdi during the oath ceremony.

The members of the families of newly elected MLAs were also present on the occasion.

Devyani Rana, in her maiden electoral venture, registered a convincing win – with a margin of 24647 votes – in the by-election for Nagrota assembly segment, by defeating Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (I) candidate and former minister Harsh Dev Singh.

Devyani secured 42350 votes to retain the seat for her party and carry forward the profound legacy of her father and former BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana, while Harsh Dev bagged 17703 votes.

The Nagrota seat had fallen vacant due to the sudden demise of BJP MLA Devender Rana on October 31, 2024.

Muntazir Mehdi, in a historic verdict, won from the Budgam assembly segment by defeating National Conference candidate Aga Mehmood by a margin of 4478 votes. This was NC’s first defeat in the constituency.

After taking the oath, Devyani extended her gratitude to the entire party leadership, the BJP workers and the people of Nagrota for their blessings and overwhelming support to her. She also reiterated her commitment to serve the people of her constituency and the people of J&K tirelessly.

“I’m honoured and privileged to be sworn in as an MLA of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, taking the oath in Dogri, and to serve as a legislator. I want to thank Shri Mata Vaishno Deviji for her blessings. I am humbled by the mandate given to me by the Nagrota constituency and the love and affection showered upon me. I reiterate my humble commitment to serve the people of Nagrota and Jammu and Kashmir to the best of my abilities and live up to the expectations of the people and work tirelessly,” she stated in a post on her social media account.

Devyani asserted, “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP president J P Nadda, we will continue to work towards a ‘Viksit Jammu and Kashmir’ which has transformed due to the statesmanly outlook of the Prime Minister.”

She expressed her deepest gratitude to the J&K BJP president Sat Sharma; J&K BJP general secretary (organisation) Ashok Koul; LoP Sunil Sharma; in-charge Nagrota and MLA Sham Lal Sharma; co-incharge Nagrota and DDC Bharat Bhushan; MoS in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh; MP Jugal Kishore; MP Gulam Ali Khatana; MLA Bahu Vikram Randhawa, besides other party MLAs, Morcha and Mandal presidents, office bearers and luminaries for their support and guidance to her. She wound up her post with a tribute to her father with a slogan, “Jab Tak Sooraj Chaand Rahega, Rana Sahib Ka Naam Rahega.”

PDP MLA Muntazir Mehdi, after taking the oath, while speaking to media persons at the party office, said that he was thankful to the people of Budgam who reposed their faith in him and elected him as their representative.

“I hope that I’ll live up to their expectations. This is not my win but the win of PDP leaders, workers and above all, supporters spread across J&K. They toiled hard to make it possible. Some of them supported through their votes, while others boosted morale. They were able to convince the people that PDP was the one and only alternative available which could provide reprieve to them (people),” he said.

With regard to a question about NC’s allegation that Muntazir won because of support of Aga Syed Mehdi, PDP MLA said, “I find it laughable. In fact, NC has never treated Budgam with seriousness. Mandate in my favour was the decision of the Budgam people, who felt deceived by NC. This time, they decided to break the tradition to support NC. After their (NC’s) defeat, they made several such statements. The reason being NC is finding it difficult to accept its defeat. Hence, sometimes they accuse PDP of playing ‘B’ team to BJP or enjoying their (BJP’s) support.”

With regard to his priorities, he said that Budgam had remained marginalised in the past.

“We, as per our promise, will restore all basic amenities related to road, education and health, as are available in other parts of J&K, in Budgam. I’ll fulfill all my promises made to people, unlike NC, which, despite one-sided mandate, failed to fulfill even a single poll promise, be it 200 units of free electricity, 12 gas cylinders or political issues of Article 370 and above (rationalisation of) reservation.”

“Instead of fulfilling promises, the Chief Minister described people of J&K as “Bijli Chor” and “Zameen-Chor” (land-grabbers). We hope this people’s verdict will force the NC government to rethink its strategies and fulfill its promises,” Muntazir Mehdi said.

Responding to questions about the Chief Minister’s assertion during poll campaigning that Budgam people would benefit by electing an MLA belonging to the ruling party, PDP MLA said, “The Chief Minister, being guardian of the entire state, cannot impose these conditions that he will work for the people of a particular if they vote for him.”

“He is under oath to work for each and every citizen of J&K and every area without any discrimination. We will do everything desired to ensure that Budgam’s rights are restored. Budgam’s constitutional rights cannot be bound by any condition. We will approach every minister and will fight also, if needed, to ensure that Budgam people are not deprived of their basic rights,” he asserted.

Being in opposition, how will he make any difference for his people, in response to this question, Muntazir said, “In democracy, opposition is as important as is the government. We will keep on reminding the government of its promises made to people and will force it to fulfill them.”

Manoj Bajpayee sees new wave of Kashmir-centric cinema

Panaji, Nov 21: Famous actor Manoj Bajpayee on Friday said that the Bollywood and other filmmakers were now bringing Kashmir’s people, not just the security narrative, to screen.

Speaking on the red carpet at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here at Panaji in Goa, Bajpayee, the four-time National Film Award, four-time Filmfare Award, and two-time Asia Pacific Screen Award winner, said that the Bollywood and other filmmakers in the country were making movies on Kashmir that are about Kashmir and the people of Kashmir, not just security-centric.

“Things are changing very rapidly, and many films are being made about Kashmir which are not just security-centric,” he said.

A recipient of Padma Shri, Bajpayee said that the romantic-tragedy film ‘Laila Majnu’, that was directed by Sajid Ali and produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor, and Preety Ali, was one such movie.

“A film like ‘Laila Majnu’ was shot in Kashmir and talks about Kashmir and Kashmiri people,” said Bajpayee, who is known for his iconic roles in Satya, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Shool.

He said similarly, many filmmakers were now coming forward and making their own stories for the big screen and OTT platforms.

Bajpayee is in Goa for the premiere of the third season of his ‘The Family Man’, a spy action thriller streaming television series created by Raj & DK for Amazon Prime Video.

In ‘The Family Man’, Bajpayee plays Srikant Tiwari, a middle-class man secretly working as an intelligence officer for the Threat Analysis and Surveillance Cell (TASC), a fictitious branch of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In the first season of ‘The Family Man’, Tiwari is sent to Kashmir as part of the investigation into ‘Mission Zulfikar’.

Bajpayee won the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor for ‘The Family Man’.

The Kashmir storyline is central to the first season of ‘The Family Man’ and explores the political tensions and the impact of these issues on the local population.

“Some new filmmakers are very, very courageous, and we need to be positive about it,” Bajpayee said at IFFI 2025.

At least 124 new film creators from all over India and abroad are screening their films at IFFI 2025, showcasing their talent to the world through their content production and storytelling.

A total of 270 films from 81 countries will be screened during IFFI 2025, with Japan being the country of focus this year.

IFFI 2025 celebrates the theme ‘Convergence of Creativity and Technology’, and this year, for the first time, IFFI includes an AI Hackathon, encouraging filmmakers to use AI for content development and filmmaking.

This year’s IFFI also has another new addition – the largest-ever WAVES Film Bazaar, positioning IFFI at the forefront of creativity, technology, and industry innovation.

Started in 1952, IFFI continues to be South Asia’s oldest and largest celebration of cinema.

Jointly hosted by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), and the State Government of Goa, the festival has grown into a global cinematic powerhouse over the years.

It provides an opportunity for first-timers to share space with legendary maestros.

IFFI provides international competitions, cultural showcases, masterclasses, tributes, and the high-energy WAVES Film Bazaar, providing an opportunity for ideas, deals, and collaborations to take flight.

Being staged against Goa’s stunning coastal backdrop, IFFI 2025 will conclude on November 28.
