Improper drainage outside IE Rangreth causing hardships: Association of Industrialists

Srinagar, Nov 21: The drainage system outside the entrance of SIDCO Industrial Estate, Rangreth, which has remained in a state of total collapse for the past several years, continues to cause trouble for commuters, said Association of Industrialists, SIDCO Industrial Estate.

“Raw sewage, septic waste, and contaminated water continuously overflow onto the main access road leading to the Industrial Estate.

Frequent rainfall and the complete blockage of underground pipes have worsened the situation this year, turning the road into a dangerous and slippery passage for workers, commuters, local residents,” said Dawood Ahmad, President, Industrialists Association Rangreth. “Several incidents of skidding and injuries have been reported, and the unbearable stench and environmental contamination have made the area nearly unlivable. Despite repeated complaints to the concerned authorities, no permanent solution has been implemented,” he said in a statement. It is a hazardous condition, as the extent of sewage overflow has led to road damaged and causes daily risks faced by the public, he added.

House damaged in Ramsu fire Incident

Ramban, Nov 21: A double-storey residential structure was damaged after a massive fire broke out in the remote Zaradi Neel area of sub-division Ramsu in Ramban district on Friday.

Official sources stated that the fire erupted in a double-story residential house belonging to Mohammad Saleem Naike and Mohammad Ilyas Naike, sons of Abdul Qayoom resident of Zaradi Neel.

As soon as the fire broke out, locals, along with a team from Police Post Neel and Army personnel posted in the area, rushed to the spot and attempted to control the blaze using water and available fire extinguishers. However, the double-storey structure was completely gutted by the time the flames could be contained.

An adjoining house belonging to Adil also suffered partial damage, though timely efforts helped prevent the fire from spreading to other nearby houses situated in the cluster.

A fire tender from Fire and Emergency Station Banihal was later dispatched to the area. Due to the lack of road connectivity, it took additional time for firefighters to reach the spot with fire extinguishers.

Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Ramsu Mazahir Hussain, who, along with SDPO Banihal, visited the affected location, said that a residential house comprising two families was fully destroyed, while another nearby house sustained partial damage.

The officer said no loss of life or injury to anyone was reported in this fire incident.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Ramban Mohammad Alyas Khan has dispatched relief material for the affected families to Zaradi Neel.

GCC calls for ban on conversion of agricultural land for commercial purposes

Srinagar, Nov 21: Days after Vice Chancellor Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST- K) Dr Nazir Ganai made remarks that Srinagar was “the most unorganised city with no land use policy”, Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC) has reitereated that time and again it has taken up this issue with the Jammu and Kashmir government.

In a statement, retired IAS officer and Chairman, Group of Concerned Citizens, Khurshid Ahmed Ganai said heed should be paid to advice of VC SKUAST. “Regulate conversion of agriculture land to conserve it. Otherwise whole of the Valley will become a concrete jungle in the next ten years with no land left for agriculture. High prices of land was encouraging owners to sell their agriculture land for construction of residential houses and shops in the most uneconomical and unplanned manner. VC SKUAST has rightly referred to Srinagar as the most unorganised city notwithstanding the master plan which is there to be violated,” said Ganai.

He said GCC had already flagged this issue of unregulated conversion of agriculture land last year in November with the Chief Secretary in a meeting with him. Ganai added that this issue was also taken up with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in a meeting with him in June this year. Notably, last week Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Kashmir, Dr Nazir Ganai said that Srinagar was the most unorganised city in the country with no land use policy in place. The Vice Chancellor said this while responding to a query on the agricultural land getting squeezed due to the boom of constructions.

SC seeks EC’s response on fresh pleas challenging SIR exercise in Kerala, other states

New Delhi, Nov 21: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a batch of pleas challenging the Election Commission’s decision to conduct Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and other states. A bench of Justices Surya Kant, SVN Bhatti and Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the Election Commission on all the fresh petitions filed by different political leaders, challenging SIR exercises in different states on different grounds.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for a petitioner challenging SIR exercise in Kerala, submitted that local body elections are also scheduled to be held in the state and, therefore, there is some urgency involved in the matter.

The bench directed the pleas challenging SIR exercise in Kerala will be listed on November 26 and rest of the petitions challenging electoral roll revision exercise in other states will be taken up for hearing in the first or second week of December. The top court is already hearing a batch of pleas challenging the validity of the Election Commission’s decision to conduct pan-India SIR exercise. Kashmiris themselves victims of violence, don’t wage war against victims: MP Aga Ruhullah

Kashmiris themselves victims of violence, don’t wage war against victims: MP Aga Ruhullah

Tral, Nov 21: Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday said that Kashmiris are being persecuted for violence of which they themselves are the victims.

“Kashmiris are the biggest victims of violence, and you cannot target them for a mistake they never committed. But as has been seen in the past, whenever such incidents happen, every Kashmiri Muslim is viewed with suspicion and targeted,” Ruhullah told media persons in Hari-Tral, where he had gone to offer condolences to the family of crime photographer Javaid Ahmad Rather, who died in the Nowgam incident.

Nine people were killed in the blast in Nowgam, and a Kashmiri man also lost his life in Delhi, he said.

“Similarly, violence hits non-Kashmiris as well. So you cannot wage war against victims of violence instead of bringing the perpetrators to book. This only emboldens the perpetrators instead of weakening them,” he said.

Standing at the condolence site, Ruhullah said the photographer was “a Kashmiri who became a victim of violence,” adding that an entire community cannot be persecuted for the inhuman acts of a few.

“Out of 1 crore Muslims living in Jammu and Kashmir, only 0.001 percent may be involved in such acts. You cannot persecute the remaining 99.999 percent peace-loving people,” he said.

He added that while most people outside the region do not fall for what he called BJP propaganda, “there is certainly a fringe that gets a chance to target Kashmiris and Muslims living outside.”

Ruhullah also called for a probe into the blast at the Nowgam police station, which killed nine people.

“The way the incident unfolded suggests it was handled in an unprofessional manner. The explosives were kept improperly, and even those with no expertise like a tailor and the tehsildar, were brought there. The incident should be probed so that anyone responsible for lapses is held accountable. And if it is something other than a mere accident, that should be investigated too,” he said.

He added that compensation should be provided to the families of the deceased and jobs offered to their next of kin, many of whom were sole breadwinners.
