If centre, states work together like team India, no goal is impossible: PM Modi

New Delhi, Jul 31: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a Central Sector Scheme for providing Rs 2,000 crore as grant-in-aid to the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) over four years from 2025-26 to 2028-29. The funding will be provided in equal annual instalments of Rs 500 crore. The grant will enable NCDC to leverage Rs 20,000 crore from the open market during the same period, which will be used to offer loans to cooperative societies for setting up new projects, expanding existing facilities, and meeting working capital needs.

The scheme is expected to benefit approximately 2.9 crore members from over 13,000 cooperative societies operating in sectors such as dairy, fisheries, livestock, sugar, textiles, food processing, storage, cold storage, labour, and women-led cooperatives.

Under the scheme, NCDC will act as the implementing agency, overseeing fund disbursement, project monitoring, and loan recovery. Loans will be offered either directly to eligible cooperatives or through state governments, in line with NCDC’s direct funding norms.

The scheme is projected to generate employment across various skill levels and improve liquidity, infrastructure, and capacity in the cooperative sector. It aims to foster inclusive rural development by enhancing productivity, profitability, and economic participation, particularly among women and small farmers. India currently has over 8.25 lakh cooperative societies with more than 29 crore members, making them a crucial part of the rural economy and socio-economic development.

Mehbooba Mufti seeks judicial probe into Jammu youth’s killing

Jammu, Jul 31: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday visited the residence of 21-year-old Parvez Ahmed in Nikki Tawi, Jammu. Parvez, a Gujjar youth, was killed in a reported staged police encounter on July 24, 2025, in Surey Chak under the jurisdiction of Satwari Police Station.

Mufti’s visit underscored growing concerns over what she described as systematic and targeted violence against the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. She alleged atrocities against the nomadic tribes, stating that despite the installation of an elected government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, their suffering continues unchecked.

In a statement issued, Mufti strongly condemned the killing, rejecting police claims of Parvez’s alleged involvement in drug peddling. “Mohammad Parvez was executed in a fake encounter by those meant to protect him. This is state-sponsored terror targeting the Gujjar-Bakerwal communities. I demand a time-bound judicial probe to expose the culprits and ensure justice,” she said. Mufti assured the family of full support from the JKPDP and warned that such actions only widen the trust deficit in democratic institutions.

Mufti also highlighted the plight of Gujjar-Bakerwal families, saying they are being routinely harassed during seasonal cattle migrations. She cited reports of arbitrary detentions, forced evictions, and accusations of drug peddling and cattle smuggling as daily challenges faced by the community.

“The people pinned their hopes on an elected government for relief, but the cycle of violence against our nomadic tribes continues unabated. The Gujjar-Bakerwal communities, who stood by Jammu and Kashmir through its darkest times, are treated as dispensable. This is a betrayal of their loyalty,” Mufti told reporters.

Mufti said thousands of Gujjar-Bakerwal community members have reportedly been detained by Kathua and Samba police in recent months and released only after no evidence was found, further deepening community distrust.

Centre invites tender for Sawalkote Hydro Project on Chenab River in JK as Indus Water Treaty remains in abeyance

Centre invites tender for Sawalkote Hydro Project on Chenab River in JK as Indus Water Treaty remains in abeyance

New Delhi, July 31: The Centre has invited tenders for the construction of the 1,856 MW Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab river near Sidhu village in Ramban District of Jammu and Kashmir.

This development adds to Pakistan’s woes, which already stand on the back foot after the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, following the Pahalgam terror attack.

NHPC has released an official notification, inviting e-tenders for the project that was originally conceived in the 1960s.

The last date for submission of online bids is September 10.

The project site is located near Sidhu village in Ramban district, roughly 120 km from Jammu and 130 km from Srinagar,

Construction of the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project is a major step to optimise India’s use of Indus water as the treaty remains suspended. The Indus Water Treaty was put in abeyance as one of India’s strict actions against Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Yesterday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasised the importance of the Indus Water Treaty is and criticised Congress for agreeing to various terms with Pakistan.

“The Indus Water Treaty, in many ways, is a very unique agreement. I cannot think of any agreement in the world where a country has allowed its major rivers to flow to the next country without having rights on that river,” Jaishankar said.

He also targeted Jawaharlal Nehru over his statement in Parliament back in 1960 regarding the treaty.

“On November 30th 1960. He (Jawaharlal Nehru) says I would like to know if this house is to judge the quantum of supply of water or money to be given. People objected to that. PM also said, ‘Let me do this treaty for the interest of Pakistani Punjab, not a word about farmers of Kashmir or Punjab. Not a word about Rajasthan or Gujarat,’” Jaishankar said.

He also added that PM Modi has “corrected” Jawaharlal Nehru’s “mistakes” when it comes to handling the Indus Water Treaty and Article 370.

“We were told for 60 years that nothing could be done. Pandit Nehru’s mistake can’t be corrected. The Narendra Modi government showed it can be corrected. Article 370 was corrected, and IWT is being corrected. The Indus Water Treaty will be held in abeyance until Pakistan irrevocably gives up its support of terrorism. We have warned that Blood and water will not flow together,” he said.

The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank and signed in 1960, governs the distribution of water from the Indus River system between India and Pakistan. The treaty has withstood multiple wars and diplomatic crises, but recent tensions have prompted fresh discussions on its future.

The treaty allocates the eastern rivers (Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej) to India and the western rivers (Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum) to Pakistan, with some provisions for India to use the western rivers for limited irrigation and non-consumptive uses like power generation.

Pak court orders 10-year jail term for 166 members of Imran Khan’s party

Pak court orders 10-year jail term for 166 members of Imran Khan's party

Lahore, July 31: A Pakistan court on Thursday handed down 10-year jail term each to 166 members, including some lawmakers, of incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan party in connection with the May 9, 2023 attack on ISI building and other military installations in Punjab province.

The sentencing of leaders of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) –including opposition leaders in the National Assembly and Senate and several other lawmakers — has come just a week before the proposed launch of ‘Free Imran Khan Movement’ from August 5 across the country.

The PTI has strongly condemned the verdict by the Faisalabad Anti-terrorism Court (ATC) terming it a part of a plan to disqualify its lawmakers from the parliament and stopping the party from holding a peaceful protest.

On May 9, 2023, Khan’s party workers vandalised a dozen military installations, including the Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander House), Mianwali Airbase and the ISI building in Faisalabad, some 130 kms from Lahore. The Army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob for the first time protesting Khan’s arrest.

The ATC Faisalabad on Thursday convicted 108 out of 185 accused and acquitted the remaining 77 individuals in the ISI building attack case in Faisalabad.

In the case related to an attack on a police station in Faisalabad, 58 accused have been handed down to 10 years in prison each.

The court handed down 10-year prison sentences each to Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Shibli Faraz, and prominent PTI leaders Zartaj Gul and Sahibzada Hamid Raza.

The convicts include six members of the National Assembly, one from the Punjab Assembly, and one Senator. So far, 14 legislators from the PTI have been convicted and disqualified related to the May 9 incident trials.

PTI interim chairman Barrister Gohar Ali said the PTI would challenge the verdict in the Lahore High Court.

“The PTI lawmakers are disqualified in the name of the May 9 incident, based on testimony from the police officers,” he said and added that many PTI lawmakers’ status in both National Assembly and Senate stands disqualified.

Gohar Ali said the government had a plan to elect its members in the parliament and Senate on the seats of disqualified PTI lawmakers.

He said for the first time ever, all opposition leaders from Punjab, Senate and National Assembly, are convicted in politically motivated cases.

Earlier on July 22, Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Lahore handed down 10-year sentences to seven prominent PTI leaders in the May 9, 2023 case related to the Sharpao Bridge riots.

The 72-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was ousted from office in April 2022 after conviction in a corruption case. He has been behind bars since August 2023 after he was booked in multiple cases, most of them after his removal from office.

His arrest had resulted in vandalism and riots on May 9, 2023 and around 10,000 PTI supporters were then arrested.

Over 100 PTI loyalists, including the party supremo’s nephew Hassan Khan, were handed over to the military custody and later the military courts awarded 2 to 10 years imprisonment to them. Hassan Khan is undergoing a 10-year term.

Meanwhile, Khan’s sister Aleema Khan recently said her brother’s sons — Suleman and Kasim — would come to Pakistan to take part in the PTI protest movement that will be kicked off on August 5.

On July 11, Punjab province’s Information Minister and a leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Azma Bokhari had made it clear that Khan’s sons would be dealt with strictly if they visit Pakistan to join any “violent protest” here and that they would not be allowed to create unrest in the country.
