Trump says will meet NYC Mayor-elect Mamdani in White House on Friday

New York, Nov 20: US President Donald Trump has said that New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will meet him at the White House on Friday.

Trump has been critical of Mamdani’s policies and had warned on the eve of the November 4 election that Mamdani’s win will be a “complete and total economic and social disaster” for New York City.

“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran “Kwame” Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday.

In his fiery victory speech, Mamdani had challenged Trump, who has launched a crackdown on immigration in his second term as President, asserting that New York will be powered by immigrants and, after his historic victory, will be “led by an immigrant”.

“After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power,” Mamdani had said to thunderous applause.

“This is not only how we stop Trump; it’s how we stop the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up,” he said.

Trump had termed Mamdani’s victory speech as a “very angry” address, saying he is off to a bad start and doesn’t have a chance of succeeding if he is not respectful of Washington.

When asked if he would reach out to him, Trump said that Mamdani “should reach out to us really. I think he should reach out. I’m here. We’ll see what happens. But I would think that it would be more appropriate for him to reach out to us.”

Trump had added that he is “so torn, because I would like to see the new mayor do well, because I love New York. I really love New York.”

Trump, who calls Mamdani a “communist”, had said that for thousands of years, communism has not worked. “Communism or the concept of communism has not worked. I tend to doubt it’s going to work this time.”

Mamdani emerged victorious in the closely-watched battle for New York City Mayor, becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to be elected to sit at the helm of the largest city in the US.

He had been the front-runner in the NYC Mayoral election for months and defeated Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and political heavyweight former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate and was officially endorsed by Trump just hours before the elections.

Indian-descent Mamdani is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. He was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda and moved to New York City with his family when he was 7. Mamdani became a naturalised US citizen only recently, in 2018.

Gill was then taken to hospital for examination after stumps, with a cervical collar around his neck. The BCCI announced ahead of day three’s play that Gill was ruled out for the remainder of the game, which India lost by 30 runs to be 0-1 behind in the two-game series.

“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day.”

CS calls for boosting Fodder production, Eco-Tourism & Afforestation efforts

Jammu, Nov 19: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo today chaired a comprehensive review meeting of the Forest, Ecology & Environment Department to assess its overall functioning and to take stock of key conservation, protection, and developmental initiatives underway across Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was attended by Commissioner Secretary, Forests, Sheetal Nanda; Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Suresh Kumar Gupta; and heads of various wings of the Department.

At the outset, the Chief Secretary underscored the critical importance of enhancing fodder availability in grazing areas, noting that fodder growth is intrinsically linked to the progress of the Animal, Sheep Husbandry, and Dairy sectors. He directed the Department to take targeted measures to scale up fodder production in all feasible forest zones.

Calling for a renewed push toward eco-tourism, the Chief Secretary observed that J&K’s Forest Department possesses significant assets that can be leveraged to promote sustainable tourism. He instructed officials to upgrade existing infrastructure to meet modern tourism standards and ensure optimal utilisation of these facilities throughout the tourist season, thereby generating meaningful revenue for the Department.

He also emphasised the need to study and adopt successful eco-tourism models from states such as Kerala, the North-Eastern region, and Uttarakhand. He highlighted that J&K, with its vast ecological diversity, holds immense potential to emerge as a leading eco-tourism destination if developed sustainably.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary identified specific stretches such as Peer ki Gali and Tanghdar that require immediate ecological interventions to restore greenery. He reiterated that afforestation and reforestation should remain core priorities, remarking that forests act as the “lungs of the planet” and thus demand vigorous and continuous efforts for their protection and expansion.

Reviewing progress on major projects, the Chief Secretary examined the ongoing development of Jambu Zoo and the Kishtwar High Altitude National Park. He called for timely completion of all pending works to enhance visitor experience and directed officials to ensure provision of essential public amenities. He also suggested exploring the introduction of Night Safaris at Jambu Zoo and adding more animal and bird species to enrich public engagement and learning.

Fruit growers seek Rs 2,000 Cr package for horticulture

Fruit growers seek Rs 2,000 Cr package for horticulture

Srinagar, Nov 19: Kashmir’s horticulture sector has raised an urgent alarm after suffering losses estimated at nearly Rs 2,000 crore in the August 2025 natural disaster, calling it one of the biggest setbacks in the Valley’s recent economic history.

At an emergent meeting held at Fruit Mandi, Apple Town Sopore, the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union (KVFGDU) appealed to the Government of India and the J&K administration to immediately announce a comprehensive relief package.

The meeting, chaired by Union Chairman Bashir Ahmad Basheer, brought together representatives of fruit growers’ associations from across the Valley. Speakers unanimously described the crisis as the worst financial blow in decades, triggered by widespread floods and the prolonged closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway at the peak of the apple harvest. Thousands of loaded trucks remained stranded for more than 20 days, causing fully ripened apples to rot inside vehicles and at mandies. Basheer said the disruptions crashed the market and sent prices spiralling downward at a time when growers were expecting their annual income. “Farmers who worked the entire year were forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices. Many have been pushed to the brink,” he said.

The Union expressed deep disappointment that no compensation or relief has been announced so far despite the scale of destruction. Members said the horticulture sector, which sustains lakhs of families, cannot absorb losses of this magnitude and urgently needs government intervention. They demanded a Rs 2,000 crore compensation package along with long-term safeguards such as a horticulture crop insurance scheme, revival of the Market Intervention Scheme, development of alternative transport routes, loan waivers for the worst-hit growers, interest exemption on bank loans and expansion of CA and cold storage facilities.

Growers also urged the administration to streamline pesticide and fertiliser availability, standardise packaging material, enforce quarantine norms for High Density plants and upgrade fruit mandis with necessary infrastructure so that farmers are protected from exploitation and future losses.

The Union warned that without timely intervention, many orchardists may fall into deep financial distress, threatening the stability of the Valley’s horticulture-driven economy. As Kashmir continues to recover from the August disaster, the region’s fruit growers now await a firm response from the government, insisting that the future of the Valley’s apple industry depends on immediate and decisive action.

Trump defends Saudi Crown Prince over Khashoggi killing

Trump defends Saudi Crown Prince over Khashoggi killing

New Delhi, Nov 19: US President Donald Trump defended Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his visit to the White House, saying the crown prince “knew nothing” about the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Trump’s remarks appear to go against a 2021 US intelligence report, which concluded that the crown prince had approved the operation that led to Khashoggi’s death inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

This was Mohammed bin Salman’s first visit to the US since the assassination, which had strained US-Saudi relations. During a question from a journalist in the Oval Office, Trump responded sharply, saying: “You’re mentioning someone extremely controversial… But he knew nothing about it. You don’t have to embarrass our guests.” The Saudi crown prince said that his country took “all the right steps” to investigate Khashoggi’s death, describing it as “painful” and a “huge mistake”. He denied any personal role in the incident. However, the US intelligence report released under President Joe Biden’s administration concluded that the crown prince had approved a plan to “capture or kill” Khashoggi. During Trump’s first term, the report was not made public, and although some Saudi officials were sanctioned, none of the measures directly targeted Mohammed bin Salman.

Khashoggi’s widow reacts

Jamal Khashoggi’s widow, Hanan, criticised Trump’s remarks. Speaking to BBC Newsnight, she said the US president’s comments did not match with the crown prince’s own admission of responsibility in a 2019 TV interview. She has also called for a meeting with the crown prince, seeking an apology and compensation. She currently lives in the Washington DC area under political asylum.

Talks on Trade, Technology and Defence

The meeting between Trump and the crown prince aimed to boost cooperation in several areas, including: civilian nuclear energy, artificial intelligence, and increased Saudi investment in the US, ising from $600 billion to $1 trillion.

The two leaders also discussed a possible deal to sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia through US defence company Lockheed Martin. Some officials in Israel have raised concerns that this could affect Israel’s military edge in the region. Trump said both Saudi Arabia and Israel are “great allies” and should have top-of-the-line equipment.
