316 mn women, 12.5 mn adolescent girls faced sexual violence in last 12 months: WHO

316 mn women, 12.5 mn adolescent girls faced sexual violence in last 12 months: WHO

Geneva, Nov 20: A whopping 316 million women and 12.5 million adolescent girls worldwide faced sexual violence in the last 12 months, according to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday.

The report, released ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and girls observed on November 25, noted that violence against women remains one of the world’s most persistent and under-addressed human rights crises and has made little progress in the last two decades.

Nearly one in three women — estimated 840 million globally — have experienced partner or sexual violence during their lifetime — a number that has hardly changed since the year 2000.

In the last 12 months, 316 million women — 11 per cent of those aged 15 or older — were subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner.

About 12.5 million adolescent girls — 15-19 years of age or 16 per cent — have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner.

Progress on reducing intimate partner violence has been painfully slow, with only a 0.2 per cent annual decline over the past two decades, stated the report.

For the first time, the report also includes national and regional estimates of sexual violence by someone other than a partner.

It found 263 million women have experienced non-partner sexual violence since age 15, a figure experts caution is significantly under-reported due to stigma and fear.

“Violence against women is one of humanity’s oldest and most pervasive injustices, yet still one of the least acted upon,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

“No society can call itself fair, safe, or healthy while half its population lives in fear. Ending this violence is not only a matter of policy; it is a matter of dignity, equality, and human rights,” he added.

The report also highlighted the lack of funding for initiatives against sexual violence, warning that humanitarian emergencies, technological shifts, and rising socio-economic inequality are further increasing risks for millions of women and girls.

It called for decisive government action and funding to scale up evidence-based prevention programmes to strengthen survivor-centred health, legal, and social services; investing in data systems to track progress and reach the most at-risk groups; and enforcing laws and policies empowering women and girls.

Sufyan Waheed from Ramban shines at 36th Senior National Fencing Championship, wins Bronze and Silver in New Delhi

Ramban, Nov 20: In a proud moment for Jammu & Kashmir, 19-year-old fencing star Sufyan Waheed Sohil from District Ramban has delivered an outstanding performance at the 36th Senior National Fencing Championship held at IG Stadium, New Delhi, securing Bronze in the Individual category and Silver in the Team event.

Sufyan’s latest victory adds to an already exceptional year, marking his fifth medal in 2025. Competing against India’s top-ranked senior fencers, he showcased remarkable skill and composure throughout the tournament.

Beginning his individual event on 17 November, Sufyan won 4 of his 6 pool matches, advancing to the knockout round of 64. He continued his winning streak by defeating: A senior Uttarakhand fencer 15-06 in the Round of 64; a Chandigarh athlete 15-07 in the Round of 32; a top Punjab fencer 15-10 in the Pre-Quarterfinals; and Star fencer Udhyveer Singh of Punjab 15-12 in the Quarterfinals.

With this performance, he clinched the Bronze Medal for UT J&K. He narrowly missed a spot in the final after losing the semifinal to the top-ranked gold medalist from SSCB (Army).

In the Team event, Sufyan once again proved his class, helping the J&K team—featuring Ajay Kumar, Shivansh Kapoor, and Saaid Ur Rehman—secure the Silver Medal today.

Despite his consistent national and international achievements, Sufyan continues to lack institutional support. A promising Olympic prospect, he has so far received no recognition from the district administration or the Police Department, even though he is the son of a police constable, Waheed Sohil.

Sufyan has previously brought glory to the region with, Bronze Medal for India in 2024 (New Zealand) , Two Silver Medals in the 38th National Games 2025 and Leading the Indian contingent at the World University Games in Germany (July 2025).

Donald Trump’s son to visit Taj Mahal today along with 126 special guests from 40 countries

New Delhi, Nov 20: US President Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., is set to visit Agra to see the Taj Mahal on Thursday. He will arrive at Kheria Airport by a special aircraft, after which he will proceed to the iconic monument.

Trump Jr., along with 126 special guests from 40 countries, is scheduled to tour the Taj Mahal. In 2020, US President Trump visited the monument with his wife, Melania Trump, but this will be Donald Trump Jr.’s first visit.

The local administration has made extensive preparations for his arrival, including clearing 16 stray dogs and 12 cows from the roads and carrying out a special cleaning drive to ensure smooth movement and enhanced security.

Trump Jr., who is also a businessman, is likely to visit India over the weekend to attend a high-profile destination wedding of an Indian American couple in Udaipur, Rajasthan. In anticipation of his visit, a team from a US security agency has already reached Udaipur and is reviewing security arrangements.

The wedding is scheduled to take place on November 21 and 22. The main ceremony will be held at the historic Jag Mandir Palace, located in the middle of Lake Pichola, while the other festivities will take place at Manek Chowk within the City Palace complex. According to sources, Trump Jr. will stay at The Leela Palace Udaipur, one of the city’s most luxurious hotels.

Besides Donald Trump Jr., several Indian politicians and celebrities are expected to attend the event. Ahead of the arrival of these VIP guests, the Rajasthan administration has begun enforcing heightened security measures across Udaipur. The city will remain on high alert during the two-day celebrations, with special arrangements put in place along the route from the airport to Lake Pichola, officials said.

Known as the “City of Lakes”, Udaipur is renowned for its lavish heritage hotels, palaces, and forts, making it one of India’s most picturesque wedding destinations. Nestled in the Aravalli Hills, the royal city has long been a favourite choice for grand celebrations among affluent families. It has previously hosted the weddings or pre-wedding festivities of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, Raveena Tandon, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Hardik Pandya, and Isha Ambani, daughter of billionaire Mukesh Ambani.

After Saudi request, Trump says US will push to end the war in Sudan

After Saudi request, Trump says US will push to end the war in Sudan

Washington, Nov 20: US President Donald Trump said he will begin working to help end Sudan’s civil war after Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged him to intervene, signalling a potential deepening of Washington’s role in a conflict that has killed at least 150,000 people and pushed the country toward famine.

Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington on Wednesday (local time), Trump said Sudan had not featured in his foreign-policy plans until the crown prince raised the issue during talks at the White House a day earlier.

“It was not on my charts to be involved in that. I thought it was just something that was crazy and out of control,” Trump told the audience. “But I see how important it is to you and to a lot of your friends in the room…We have already started working on it.”

In a post on Truth Social minutes later, Trump described “tremendous atrocities” in Sudan and called it “the most violent place on Earth and… the single biggest humanitarian crisis.”

He said Arab leaders, “in particular the highly respected Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia,” had asked him to use the influence of the US presidency to halt the fighting. He pledged to work with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and “other Middle Eastern partners” to stabilise the country.

The comments suggest a shift in tone from Trump, who implied the US had stayed on the sidelines of the conflict.

Earlier this month, the State Department announced that it was engaging with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group and the Sudanese army to bring an end to the hostilities.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on November 4 that the US has been coordinating with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and others on a peace process to address humanitarian needs and long-term political issues. A United Nations-backed food security monitor warned that famine has already taken hold in several parts of Sudan.

The war, which erupted in April 2023, has left millions displaced and triggered allegations of genocide in Darfur. International mediation efforts have so far failed to halt the fighting.

Responding to the new item published on November 14 regarding Dharmkund cloudburst, a spokesperson of the district administration said, “Contrary to the claims made in the news, all families affected by the cloudburst and flash-floods on April 20, 2025 in Dharmkund, tehsil Ramban, have been provided due relief and compensation strictly as per SDRF norms.”

“Immediately after the incident, the district administration Ramban extended comprehensive support, temporary shelter, food, water, medical care, and other essential logistics,” the spokesperson said, while maintaining that several “critical facts have been overlooked, leading to a misleading portrayal of the situation.”

Terming the news report as “incomplete and one-sided narrative, lacking proper ground truthing and factual verification”, the spokesperson said that the administration undertook timely damage assessments, processed cases under SDRF guidelines, and released compensation accordingly.

“Every affected household received the assistance mandated under SDRF provisions,” the spokesperson said.

It was stated that constructive feedback was always welcomed, however, “reports without verification could create unnecessary panic and undermine the hard work of officials who responded promptly and diligently during the disaster.”
