Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 1,26,700/10g on dollar strength, weak global cues

New Delhi, Nov 20: Gold prices declined by Rs 600 to Rs 1,26,700 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday due to weak global trends and a firm US dollar, according to marketmen.

The precious metal of 99.5 per cent purity decreased by Rs 600 to Rs 1,26,100 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes).

Silver prices slumped by Rs 2,000 to Rs 1,58,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes).

“Gold prices declined on Thursday, impacted by a stronger US dollar and diminished safe-haven demand following reports of renewed US efforts to end the war in Ukraine,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Gandhi noted that market sentiment further deteriorated after the US Bureau of Labor Statistics announced it would not publish the October jobs report, leaving the Fed without crucial labour data ahead of its final meeting of the year.

“This development increased the possibility for the Fed to maintain the status quo in the December meeting, a perspective reinforced by the minutes from the October meeting, which indicated that many officials support keeping interest rates steady through 2025,” he said.

In the international markets, spot gold slipped by USD 16.48, or 0.40 per cent, to USD 4,061.53 per ounce.

“Spot gold is trading with a loss at USD 4,060 level amid mild US Dollar strength,” Praveen Singh, Head of Commodities, Mirae Asset ShareKhan, said.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose by 0.03 per cent, at 100.26.

Spot silver was trading 1.22 per cent lower at USD 50.73 per ounce in the overseas trade.

“Gold and silver prices are consolidating, and market players are keeping their attention on impending economic data in search of additional hints regarding the direction of US interest rates,” Renisha Chainani, Head – Research at Augmont, said.

The minutes from the October 28–29 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting revealed that a divided Fed lowered interest rates last month despite warnings from officials that lower borrowing costs could jeopardise the effort to control inflation.

“On the macro front, traders are now awaiting the release of the US Nonfarm Payrolls report for September due later in the day, which could provide insights on the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) monetary policy outlook,” Gandhi said.

Lockers of doctors, medical staff at GMC hospital inspected

Srinagar, Nov 20: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district conducted an inspection drive of lockers of the doctors and medical staff at a government medical college, officials said on Thursday.

The authorities in the valley began the exercise on Wednesday. This was done as part of the enhanced security measures after the recent Delhi blast and recovery of arms and ammunition in the “white collar” terror module, besides ensuring transparency, accountability, and proper utilisation of hospital infrastructure, officials added.

The drive was conducted at the Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, from where an AK-47 rifle was recovered earlier this month from Dr Adeel Rather’s locker, officials mentioned.

The arrest of the doctor led to the busting of the “white collar” terror module, involving several doctors, and the recovery of around 2900 kg of explosive material.

They further said that the Anantang police, in coordination with the hospital administration, conducted a thorough inspection of the lockers at the GMC hospital.

During the inspection, unclaimed lockers were identified, and the hospital authorities were instructed to update records to prevent any misuse.

WhatsApp vulnerability exposed data of 3.5 billion users, no ‘malicious exploitation’

WhatsApp vulnerability exposed data of 3.5 billion users, no ‘malicious exploitation’

New Delhi, Nov 20: A major vulnerability in WhatsApp left the personal details of nearly 3.5 billion users exposed, a research report from the University of Vienna has claimed.

The team of researchers uncovered a weakness in the platform’s contact discovery feature that allowed them to systematically check every possible phone number and identify active WhatsApp accounts on a massive scale.

Meta, the owner of the messaging service, was made aware of the problem and has taken steps to resolve the issue.

They generated over 100 million queries per hour using an automated method and ultimately gathered information on users from 245 countries.

Although the information retrieved was limited to data already visible to anyone having a phone number — such as public keys, profile photos, “about” text, and timestamps — the researchers said these fragments were enough to infer additional insights, including a user’s operating system, how long they had been on the platform, and the number of linked devices.

But what makes the discovery even more troubling is that a similar warning had been issued eight years ago. In 2017, a security researcher had flagged the absence of limits on the number of phone number checks a user could perform-a gap that made large-scale scraping possible.

Despite this early warning, the vulnerability remained unpatched until the University of Vienna team showed just how easily it could be exploited.

They extracted 30 million U.S. phone numbers in the first half hour of testing and continued collecting data without resistance from the WhatsApp servers.

Meta, in a statement to 9to5Mac, said it appreciated the researchers’ role in uncovering the vulnerability and credited the researchers for their role in identifying a novel enumeration technique that outsmarted its intended safeguards.

The company said it had already been working on advanced anti-scraping systems, and the study helped confirm the effectiveness of these new protections. Meta also confirmed the data had been securely deleted by the researchers and added that it did not find any evidence of malicious exploitation of the vulnerability.
