Op Sindoor proved there is no safe haven for terrorists, enemies of India: PM Modi

Sindoor turned into barood: PM Modi on Operation Sindoor

Gangaikonda Cholapuram, July 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Operation Sindoor showed the world the way India would respond if its sovereignty was attacked and that the cross-border military offensive has created a new self-confidence across the country.

Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, also proved that for enemies and terrorists targeting India, there is no safe haven, Modi said in his address at an event here to honour the Tamil emperor Rajendra Chola-I.

The event marks the birth anniversary of the Rajendra Chola-I which is celebrated as the ‘Aadi Thiruvathirai’ (the birth star of the king is Thiruvathirai in the Tamil month of Aadi) festival. Also, it commemorates 1,000 years of Rajendra Chola’s legendary maritime expedition to South East Asia and the commencement of the construction of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, a magnificent example of Chola architecture.

“The world saw how India responds if someone attacks its security and sovereignty,” he said about the military strikes at chosen targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7.

Further, he said: “Operation Sindoor proved that for enemies of India, for terrorists, there is no safe haven. When I came here from the helipad, the 3-4 km distance suddenly became a roadshow, and everyone was praising Op Sindoor. It has created a new awakening, a new self-confidence across the country. The world has to realise India’s strength.”

Modi further said the names of emperors Raja Raja Chola, and his son Rajendra Chola-I are synonymous with India’s identity and pride and announced that grand statues would be built for them in Tamil Nadu. These statues will be “modern pillars of our historic awakening.”

The honour for the iconic Tamil kings follows Modi’s several Tamil-centric initiatives including the Kashi Tamil Sangamam

and multi-language and braille translations of Thirukkural, Manimekalai and other classic Tamil literature.

“The Chola emperors had woven India into a thread of cultural unity. Today, our government is carrying forward the same vision of the Chola era. Through initiatives like the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam and the Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam, we are strengthening these centuries-old bonds of unity,” the PM said.

Further, Modi said several people spoke about UK’s Magna Carta while commenting on democracy. However, the Chola-era ‘Kudavolai system’ predated it by centuries, he said. Clearly, the prime minister continued with his Tamil pitch by invoking the rich legacy of Chola kings and their patronage of Saivite spiritualism.

The PM said: “Our Shaivite tradition has played a vital role in shaping India’s cultural identity. The Chola emperors were key architects of this legacy. Even today, Tamil Nadu remains one of the most significant centres where this living tradition continues to thrive.”

The PM said operation Sindoor has raised a new confidence in the people of India and the whole world is witnessing it. On the legacy of Rajendra Chola, he said, out of deep respect, the temple gopuram was built lower than that of his father’s Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur.

Despite his achievements, Rajendra Chola exemplified humility. “Today’s New India embodies this same spirit—becoming stronger, yet rooted in values of global welfare and unity”, the Prime Minister said.

Noting that July 27 marks the death anniversary of former President A P J Abdul Kalam, Modi remarked that in order to lead a developed India, the country needs millions of youth like Kalam and the Chola kings.

Listening to the rendition of spiritual hymns by Odhuvamurthys (Saivite gurus) and a Shiva-chant concert by music maestro Ilaiyaraja, the PM said the the spiritual atmosphere deeply moved the soul. Amid chants of Vedic and Saivite Thirumurai, Modi prayed at the Lord Shiva temple here, built by Rajendra Chola-I to mark his victories and the founding of a new city Gangaikonda Cholapuram.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a roadshow here on Sunday soon after his arrival to preside over the function to mark the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola.

During the roadshow, the prime minister stood on the running board of his vehicle and waved at the people who lined up on both sides of the road.

Workers of the BJP and AIADMK enthusiastically gathered on roadsides and they showered flowers and petals on Prime Minister Modi all through the 3-kilometer road show route; the flags of the BJP and AIADMK fluttered.

The prime minister released a commemorative coin honouring Rajendra Chola I, and attended the launch of the Tamil Gita album, facilitated by the Chinmaya Mission, remarking that the initiative energises the nation’s resolve to preserve its heritage. The PM also released a booklet on “Thirumurai recital,” (recital of Saivite hymns).

The prime minister arrived in Tuticorin on July 26 night and inaugurated, laid foundation stones for projects worth about Rs 4,900 crore. On Sunday, he presided over the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival’s grand finale here, which commenced on July 23. The event is an initiative of the Union Ministry of Culture/the ASI which maintains the Chola-era Lord Shiva temple here. Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district is near Kumbakonam in the Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu.

After completing his 2-day engagements in Tamil Nadu, the prime minister left for Delhi on July 27 from Tiruchirappali, where he stayed on Saturday night.

Jammu railway division gets first direct unlocking system to improve efficiency, safety in operations

Railways Jammu Division collects Rs 3.4 cr fine in June from violators, illegal passengers

Jammu, July 27: The first direct unlocking system has been installed at Dinanagar railway station in Northern Railway’s Jammu division, a step that is expected to improve efficiency and safety in railway operations, a senior official said.

Divisional Railway Manager, Jammu, Vivek Kumar said the system, installed on Saturday, directly controls the railway signalling and point machinery, thereby reducing the risk of human error.

The direct unlocking system ensures that the safe passage of trains is ensured, thereby reducing the risk of accidents, he said, adding that the system also streamlines the movement of trains, and improves the efficiency of train operations.

“We are proud to introduce this system at Dinapur railway station. This is an important step towards modernisation of Railways. This system will not only improve safety and efficiency but will also provide better travel experience to passengers,” Kumar said.

He said Indian Railways is planning to implement this system at other stations as well.

“This is an important step towards making Indian Railways modern, safe and efficient,” he said.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the railways said Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing rapid upgradation of rail tracks and coaches after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains between Katra and Srinagar, connecting Kashmir with the railway network of the country, on June 6.

“Over and above the new train services, opening of this (Kashmir) line has made a fundamental change in the ability to maintain rail tracks in the valley. The railway link has enabled movement of track maintenance machines to Kashmir,” the spokesman said.

He said maintenance is now being done with modern machines, unlike manual maintenance earlier. This is leading to significant improvement in track quality, he added.

To strengthen track maintenance activities in Kashmir, a tamping machine has been deployed since early June, which packs the stone chips under the tracks to ensure proper alignment and stability of the tracks.

It has so far tamped approximately 88 km of track in the valley, he said, adding this has improved the ballast cushion and will make the ride smooth.

In addition, he said two ballast cleaning machines (BCMs) have also been deployed. Ballast is the stone chip collection on tracks.

These machines are working in tandem and have deep-screened around 11.5 km track. Cleaner ballast leads to safer operation, the spokesman said.

Two additional BCMs were sent to the valley in July, 2025 and these machines have undertaken deep screening and have executed approximately 2.5 km of track.

To supplement the tamping and deep-screening work by recoupment of ballast, 17 ballast rakes were sent and unloaded in Kashmir tracks from ballast depots at Kathua, Qazigund, Madhopur and Jind. Consequently, 19,000 cubic meters of ballasting was done, he said.

He said track recording car (TRC) and oscillation monitoring system (OMS) runs were also conducted in June and July, respectively to assess track quality and identify track stretches requiring attention. All these work have significantly improved track quality in Kashmir, he added.

Along with track upgradation, the spokesman said a paradigm shift has happened in the maintenance and upgradation of passenger coaches in Jammu and Kashmir.

Till the opening of Jammu-Srinagar rail link, there was no rail connectivity of Kashmir valley with the rest of the Indian Railway network.

The DEMU/MEMU rakes in Kashmir could not be brought to the workshop for periodic maintenance and upgradation, the spokesman said.

He said periodic overhauling (POH) was being done by transporting bogies from Budgam in central Kashmir to Lucknow on road trailers, adding this was sub-optimal.

For the first time, rakes from the valley have been brought to Lucknow through rail for POH, the spokesman said, adding the condition of all the rakes in Budgam is being improved in a time-bound manner.

He said the upgradation work of passenger coaches in Kashmir will be completed by August-end, and all rakes in service will be renovated and upgraded within this timeframe.

Indian Railways is often called the ‘lifeline of the nation’. With the opening of Jammu-Srinagar rail line and the ongoing upgradation work, it will provide a new lifeline to Jammu and Kashmir, the spokesman said.

India recorded over 7,000 suspected heatstroke cases, 14 deaths in March-June period: RTI

India recorded over 7,000 suspected heatstroke cases, 14 deaths in March-June period: RTI

New Delhi, July 27: India reported 7,192 suspected heatstroke cases and only 14 confirmed deaths due to extreme heat between March 1 and June 24 this year, according to data obtained by PTI under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The country had reported nearly 48,000 cases of heatstroke and 159 deaths due to extreme heat in 2024, the warmest year on record in India since 1901.

The data, shared by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), reveals that the majority of cases were reported in May, the peak of the summer season, with 2,962 suspected cases and three confirmed deaths.

April saw 2,140 suspected cases and six confirmed deaths, while March recorded 705 cases and two deaths.

During June, up to June 24, 1,385 suspected cases and three deaths were documented.

Andhra Pradesh accounted for more than half of the total suspected heatstroke cases, reporting 4,055 during the period. Rajasthan reported 373 cases, followed by Odisha (350), Telangana (348) and Madhya Pradesh (297).

Despite these high numbers, several states with hundreds of suspected cases reported no confirmed deaths.

The data shows that Maharashtra and Uttarakhand reported the highest number of confirmed heatstroke deaths, at three each. Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal reported one death each.

The figures highlight the limitations of India’s surveillance system, which experts say captures only a fraction of the actual burden.

The NCDC data is collected under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and relies on hospitals to report cases. This means deaths that occur outside medical facilities or are not correctly diagnosed as heat-related often remain uncounted.

A PTI investigation in June revealed that India’s reporting of heat-related illnesses and deaths is fragmented, with different agencies presenting widely varying figures.

For 2015-2022, the NCDC recorded 3,812 heat-related deaths, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported 8,171, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 3,436.

A senior health ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, had admitted that confirming heatstroke deaths is inherently difficult. “Surveillance systems capture only a fraction of actual cases. We have some numbers, but never the full picture,” the official said.

The official also noted that many hospitals are understaffed, which hampers timely and accurate reporting. “Manual data entry adds to the problem. Even if deaths occur, they may not be properly classified as heat-related,” he said.

Several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala and West Bengal, have in previous years failed to submit complete data to the NCDC. In some instances, authorities have been accused of suppressing death figures to avoid compensation claims.

According to Abhiyant Tiwari, Lead for Climate Resilience and Health at NRDC India, attributing deaths directly to heat is a global challenge.

“Many heat-related deaths are misclassified as heart attacks or other causes. Excess mortality data during heatwaves provides a better picture of the true toll,” he said.

Experts say the absence of a single comprehensive reporting system weakens India’s ability to prepare for and respond to extreme heat events, which are expected to worsen with climate change.

Soumya Swaminathan, Advisor to the Health Ministry, told PTI earlier that strengthening death reporting systems is critical. “Only accurate data can inform better policies,” she said.
