India supplies 1 in 3 smartphones to US as Apple shifts from China

Srinagar, July 26: India has emerged as a major player in the global smartphone supply chain, now accounting for nearly one-third of all smartphones imported into the US, largely fueled by Apple’s expanding iPhone production in the country.

As per reports despite concerns over a potential 25% tariff on Indian-made iPhones proposed by former US President Donald Trump, India’s share of US smartphone imports surged from 11% in 2024 to 36% by May 2025.

According to an Indian express report US smartphone imports from India jumped by over three times year-on-year to 21.3 million units between January and May this year, according to data from the US International Trade Commis-sion (USITC). In value terms (CIF), imports of Indian-made smartphones increased 182 per cent y-o-y to $9.35 billion, already higher than around $7 billion in the whole of 2024.

Apple’s Big Bet on India
Apple’s deepening investment in Indian manufacturing is transforming trade flows. Its major supplier Foxconn announced a $1.49 billion expansion in Tamil Nadu, while India now produces about 20% of the world’s iPhones.
In May, Apple CEO Tim Cook had said the company expects most iPhones sold in the US in the April-June quarter to have India as their country of origin.
Meanwhile, according to reports China exported 29.4 million smartphones to the US between January and May — a 27 per cent y-o-y drop — valued at around $10 billion. China (49 per cent) and India (36 per cent) were followed by Vietnam with 8.3 million units exported, accounting for a share of 14 per cent.

A Changing Smartphone Supply Chain
China, once the dominant player, has seen its share of US smartphone imports drop from 82% in 2024 to under 50%. Vietnam now holds around 14%, but India’s rapid rise highlights a strategic diversification in the global tech manufacturing landscape.
The shift underscores how geopolitical shifts, tariffs, and corporate strategy are reshaping where the world’s smartphones are made—and how they reach American consumers.

India’s growing share — now 1 in 3, driven largely by Apple iPhones — comes amid ongoing trade talks with the US. While smartphones are India’s top export to the US by value, President Donald Trump has threatened a 25 per cent tariff on Indian-made iPhones.

Govt directs doctors, paramedics to wear aprons, nameplates during duty hours

Srinagar, July 26: The Jammu and Kashmir government has directed all doctors and paramedical staff in government healthcare institutions to strictly adhere to the norms regarding the wearing of white aprons and nameplates during duty hours.

The directive comes after it was observed that a significant number of medical professionals—including those engaged under the National Health Mission (NHM) and Ayush—do not wear aprons or display their identity properly, leading to confusion among patients and attendants.

“It has been observed that doctors and paramedical staff in various government healthcare institutions are not strictly adhering to the prescribed norms regarding the wearing of aprons and displaying of nameplates during duty hours. Such non-compliance is causing inconvenience to patients in identifying healthcare personnel,” reads the circular.

It reads that all doctors, including those engaged under NHM and Ayush, as well as all paramedical staff working in government healthcare institutions across the Union Territory are hereby directed to wear proper white aprons during their working hours and wear legible name plates displaying their full name and designation at all times while on duty.

All heads of institutions, medical superintendents, and chief medical officers have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the instructions in their respective institution,” it reads. (KNO)

US to buy combat drones from Ukraine in 30-billion-dollar deal: Zelensky

"Want to end war but not sure if Russia is ready": Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

Kyiv, July 26: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday announced that the United States has agreed to purchase combat drones from Ukraine, in a deal potentially worth up to $30 billion, RT reported.

Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky said he had reached an understanding with US President Donald Trump regarding the sale. “With Trump, we agreed that the US will buy drones from us,” he told reporters, adding that a contract worth “$10-30 billion is now being drafted,” according to RT.

Earlier this month, Zelensky had revealed ongoing talks with Trump over a “mega deal” on drone procurement.

As per RT citing the New York Post, American defense officials have warned that US drone technology lags behind that of Russia and China, prompting efforts to accelerate purchase and development.

During the conference in Kyiv, Zelensky underlined Ukraine’s urgent financial needs, noting the country requires substantial funding to manage its defense and budgetary requirements.

“Forty billion [is needed] for the deficit, 25 for drones, missiles, electronic warfare. That’s already 65 billion,” he said. RT reported that Zelensky has made multiple requests for these funds from European leaders and international institutions.

The Ukrainian president also stressed that Western countries should help cover the salaries of Ukrainian servicemen. “So far, they don’t pay for the salaries. They pay for the weapons. And we say – salaries too, because [our troops] are weapons,” he argued, as quoted by RT.

The announcement comes as the US scales back direct financial aid to Ukraine. Trump has emphasized that future support to Ukraine “will be a business for us,” pointing out that the US will no longer cover the cost of Patriot air defense systems, which will instead be paid for by the European Union and NATO members, RT reported.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to criticize the West’s financial and military backing of Kyiv. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has stated that funding Ukraine’s weaponry is equivalent to financing the “death” of the country.

Karra seeks special session of J&K Assembly to devise strategy for statehood

Jammu, Jul 25: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra Friday demanded a special session of J&K Assembly to discuss the issue of delay in granting statehood and devise a common strategy to fight for its restoration at the earliest.

This was stated by him while talking to reporters at the Railway Station Jammu here late Friday evening after his arrival from New Delhi by Vande Bharat train.

In reply to questions regarding the statement of some top NC leaders over the issue of statehood, Karra said, “Congress is in alliance with NC although not part of government but it was an invitation to all including those who are not our allies to join the movement.” “NC is running the government and adopting its own modes to seek statehood. The appropriate forum for discussing such sensitive issues is the coordination committee, for which we have been waiting for nine months,” he quipped.

Karra said, “We have been on the streets for over six months carrying the demand for restoration of statehood to every nook and corner of Jammu and Kashmir. We’ve slowly intensified it. We gave the call for Srinagar Chalo, then Jammu Chalo and then Delhi Chalo, continuously notifying it through media briefings appealing to all political, social, trade and other organizations to support the struggle.”

He stated that the first phase of struggle reached Delhi and the entire campaign was very impressive and successful especially the Delhi Chalo call where the party held an impressive protest demonstration and marched towards Parliament however stopped.

“But it was joined by our senior national leadership on the directions of LOP Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, attracting the attention of the entire nation regarding the denial of our legitimate demand by the BJP government, despite repeated promises,” Karra said.

He thanked the party leaders and workers for their wholehearted participation in the first phase of struggle. “The movement has just started and the further course of action will be announced shortly after consultations with senior party colleagues,” he said.

Meanwhile, JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, through a post on ‘X’, also described the killing of a youth allegedly in Police firing as shocking and unfortunate and demanded an impartial probe into the incident.

“The incident of killing of a tribal youth in Phalain Mandal Satwari in alleged Police firing is very shocking and unfortunate. The government must hold a fair and impartial enquiry and the law must take its course. Our deep sympathies with the family,” Sharma posted.
