New Delhi, Nov 15: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday expressed grief and concern over the deadly explosion at the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar district, calling the incident a tragic reminder of the risks faced by security personnel engaged in sensitive investigations.

An accidental explosion inside the Nowgam Police Station late Friday night left nine personnel dead and 32 others injured and caused extensive damage to the nearby building.

In a post on X, the Congress leader called the incident “extremely heartbreaking and concerning” and said the loss of lives during an investigation underscores the dangers involved in handling high-risk material linked to ongoing terror probes.

“The explosion at the Naugam police station in Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the death of several security personnel and injuries to many others, is extremely heartbreaking and concerning. Reports indicate that this horrific accident occurred during the investigation of explosives linked to the Red Fort attack. I pay humble tribute to the martyrs and hope for the swift recovery of the injured,” Rahul Gandhi wrote.

The Nowgam blast comes just days after the car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10, which killed 12 people, highlighting the growing threat of terrorism in the country. The explosion occurred while officers were examining explosives suspected to be connected to the November 10 Red Fort attack case, which killed twelve people and injured several others.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC) president, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Saturday strongly condemned the blast at a police station in Nowgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed nine lives and injured 24 people.

In a post on X, Kharge expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and called for immediate medical care for the injured. He also urged that adequate compensation be provided to the victims and their families.

“It is extremely disconcerting and sad to know that nine precious lives have been lost and 24 people have been injured in a blast at a police station in Nowgam, Jammu & Kashmir. My deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. The injured must be treated with prompt medical supervision and adequate compensation must be provided to the victims.”

Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also offered heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones in the ghastly Nowgam Police Station blast.

The Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP), Nalin Prabhat, stressed on Saturday that any speculation about the incident was unnecessary, as preliminary findings pointed to an inadvertent blast during a mandated forensic procedure.

Hours after a massive late-night explosion reduced Srinagar’s Nowgam Police Station to rubble, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday termed the tragedy an “unfortunate accidental incident.”

In an official statement, Prashant Lokhande, Joint Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Division (MHA), stated that the blast occurred at 11:20 pm on November 14 inside the police station.

Jammu, Nov 15: A house and five commercial properties belonging to a detained narcotics smuggler were demolished in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, a police spokesperson said.

He said the demolition drive was carried out by police in coordination with the district administration at Narsoo village in Chenani along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The accused was identified as Makhan Din.

The spokesperson termed the step a “decisive action” against narco-criminals.

A habitual offender, Din was involved in a case registered at Rehambal police station last year, he said.

“Due to his persistent involvement in drug trafficking, he was also detained under the PIT NDPS and is currently lodged in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, Jammu,” he said.

According to the spokesperson, police investigation revealed that Din encroached on state land and constructed five commercial properties and a house worth crores of rupees.

“The illegal property, raised through proceeds of narco trade, was demolished as part of the ongoing crackdown to dismantle the financial infrastructure of drug peddlers,” he said.

In a separate action, the spokesperson said, a team from Majalta police station in Udhampur attached the property of alleged drug peddler Vikramjeet Kumar, a resident of Inderpuri in Punjab’s Amritsar.

During the course of investigation in a case registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Majalta police station, it was revealed that Kumar owns a duplex house, which he acquired through the proceeds of crime generated through narco trade, he said.

The property worth over Rs 1 crore has been attached under the NDPS Act for further legal action.

Police in Udhampur have attached property worth Rs 11.62 crore in NDPS Act-related cases so far this year as part of efforts to make the district drugs-free, the spokesperson said.

Ruhullah, Imran Ansari facilitated PDP’s win in Budgam: Ab Rahim Rather

Srinagar, Nov 15: Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker and National Confernce Senior leader, Abdul Rahim Rather on Saturday said that the National Conference’s defeat in the Budgam by-election must be viewed in a wider political context, adding that the votes secured by the winning PDP candidate were not solely his own.

“This is not a PDP vote. This is Ruhullah’s vote, Maulvi Ansari’s vote and the candidate’s own family vote,” Rather said, adding that the combined support of these leaders increased the PDP tally by nearly 3,500 votes compared to previous elections.

He said that in the 2024 Assembly polls, the PDP had secured around 17,000 votes in the constituency, and this time the total had risen to over 21,000 only because “both Ruhullah and Ansari brought their respective support bases together.”

Commenting on the NC’s first-ever loss in Budgam, the Speaker said that democratic results must be respected. “In elections, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. There is no problem in accepting the people’s decision,” he said, as per KNS.

He also said that, as Speaker, he does not participate in active politics but can comment on the election trend from a “financial and numerical perspective.”

Speaking about the Nowgam Police Station blast, which killed nine people and injured 32, Rather described the incident as tragic and said it must be investigated thoroughly.

“It is a matter of great misfortune. It should be investigated, and we must reach the bottom of it. Those responsible should be prosecuted according to law,” he added.

He urged people not to speculate about the cause of the blast and emphasized the need to uphold law and order.

“My only appeal is that nobody should be punished without reason, and nobody should be harmed unjustly,” he said.

When asked whether the government would be able to meet people’s expectations, Rather said the administration is making sincere efforts. “We are trying,” he responded briefly.

Srinagar, Nov 15: State Investigation Agency Inspector Israr Ahmad Shah was among the nine people who were killed in the massive explosion at the Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir.

Shah, who joined the police force in 2011, is survived by a wife, two young children, and elderly parents.

Hailing from the Drugmulla area of Kupwara district, Shah was known as a soft-spoken person who focused mainly on his work, according to his neighbour Ghulam Mohammad.

The police officer also had a reputation of being helpful, which was evident from the rush of neighbours at his residence as soon as the news of his death reached the village.

Among the deceased were Selection Grade Constables Javaid Mansoor Rather and Arshid Ahmad Shah (both Crime Branch photographers), Selection Grade Constable Aijaz Afzal Mir and Constables Mohammad Amin Mir and Showkat Ahmad Bhat (all three working with the Forensic Science Laboratory).

Naib Tehsildar Muzaffar Ahmed Khan, chowkidar of the area Suhail Ahmad Rather, and Mohammad Shafi Parray, a tailor, were the other persons killed in the accidental blast.

Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said the blast took place when a team of officials was collecting samples of the explosives seized during the investigation into the ‘white collar terror module’ case.

“As part of the prescribed procedure, the samples of the recovery had to be forwarded for further forensic and chemical examination. On account of the voluminous nature of the recovery, this process was going on for the past two days by the Forensic Science Laboratory team,” Prabhat said.

“Unfortunately, during this course, on Friday night, around 11.20 pm, an accidental explosion took place. Any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary,” he added.

The top cop said nine people lost their lives in the explosion and 32 others were injured.

He said 27 police personnel, two revenue officials, and three civilians from the adjacent area sustained injuries in the incident.

Explosives transported to Kashmir from Faridabad in pickup truck

New Delhi, Nov 15: The huge cache of explosives which exploded at Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir was brought from Haryana’s Faridabad in a Tata 407 pickup truck in small bags and was being examined by experts when the “accident” took place.

A top official said investigators were still trying to find out the possible targets of the terror module which was collecting a huge amount of explosives, some of which exploded near the Red Fort here and killed 13 people on November 10.

Nine people were killed and 32 injured in the accidental explosion at the Nowgam police station in Srinagar on Friday night.

The blast occurred when a specialised team was extracting samples from the large and “unstable” cache of explosives, according to Jammu and Kashmir Police.

The explosives were confiscated from Faridabad during raids on November 9-10 and later transported to Kashmir in a Tata 407 vehicle in small bags following full protocol, the top official said.

On the reason behind transporting the explosives to Nowgam, the official said the original case was registered at the Nowgam police station and the explosives were the case property of that police station. Hence, there was a need to transport the explosives so far.

Asked about the possible targets of the ‘white-collar’ terror module which collected the explosives, the official said the investigators were still grappling for clues.

“All the information about the possible targets was… purely speculative,” the official said.
